on the board of education I'm now going to present each of them with their oneyear service pin please a round of applause no thank you for your service and dedication to the board we really appreciate it uh next up is another one of those favorite things it's our student advisory Council please step forward guys we got a full team and apparently they got some some great stuff to share with us have a seat grab a mic thank you and Enlighten us thank you guys for coming okay hi everyone so we still have the same amount of members the same leadership team okay so let me pass it off to Andre all righty so we've been researching the cell phone and electronic devices policy jcj so this policy is um essentially to manage cell phone and electronic device usage in all uh schools in 27j um I'll rate a few quotes from it students may use their cell phones before and after school during passing periods and during lunch breaks as long as they do not create a distraction or disruption or cause the student to be tarded for the next period School administrator Administration has the discretion to restrict phone usage in these areas during class periods cell phones will not will be secured in lockers backpacks or vehicles and will remain secured not seen or heard possession of any and all electronic devices by a student is a privilege which may be forfeited by any student not abiding by the terms of this policy I'll pass it back to Marley okay so we had a meeting with Jamie White and we kind of discussed why it was implemented and um some of the things that we took away from it was that it dis it decreased distractions in the educational environment it improved social skills in students it decreased and prevented conflicts it improved participation in class it increased emergency preparedness management and it limited like the negative effects that social media and cell phone usage can have on our students mental health so many of you have apple watches and if your phone was right there in your backpack you could get text messages and the like is that restricted or is there any sort of guidance or discretion on that um we've it's kind of I'm G to pass this off to Rachel to answer this so this is kind of getting into like the next part about why we chose to talk about this policy specifically for like our first I guess trial run of actually being a specific Advisory board but um one of the biggest things is the inconsistency from school to school and so like at um Brighton High School they're very strict on Apple watches and everything like if they see you looking at it often they'll um they like make a big deal about it but but I'm not entirely certain if that's the same at other schools and I by Marley's response I'd assume that it's not so strict at Eagle Ridge or at um District policy jcj uh prohibits any device that has two-way communication system so that could include Apple watches so for at prayview our phone policy is very like fluid and just like kind of it was there at the beginning and then it slowly gets like dwindling down so we don't really see like a lot of like cracking down on Apple watches specifically so for why we chose this policy it was because of the inconsistency and also like it wasn't staying consistent at every school for like oh we have the phone policy and then it was getting like dwindling and getting worse and just like it wasn't there anymore a lot of students don't care so um we also decided that it would be good to enforce it better or like come up with a new approach and that's why we chose to talk about it and it was more controversial to a lot of students and especially a lot of teachers and a lot of the main points were just like it was very inconsistent in many aspects does the Online Academy have any recommendations on phone so we do follow the policy to the best of our ability so in doing so we have Proctor viewing and they will like during testing we go in person so we can't have our phones but their product review if you do not like if you are not in your different screens or you're not working and they can see that they will remove you from the meet or they will call you several times and then if you don't respond they'll call your parents and Mark you absent which then gets them in trouble so yeah we have a phone policy in our own way because they figure if you're not doing your work you're either watching Netflix or you're on your phone [Music] all right so this is just um cumulative data that I've gotten as a representative from Prairie viiew um we kind of at our last meeting displayed this slide that I made for the data that was collected at Prairie View and a lot of people on the board also were like oh this was this sounds like my school or oh this is similar to my school so I spent time from August to November counseling friends um teachers other students and asking them their opinion on the phone policy doing voice recordings and these are kind of the big ones that um kind of stuck out to me so on the first one there they said the phone policy is not a priority to me especially because it makes a huge distraction when teachers make a big deal over it and this is more pertaining to some teachers like to St send students to down to the security hub and then they have to go through that process fill out a form and um they have to just and it becomes a big deal cuz if some students aren't compliant um the teacher is basically just bantering with the student all class period which is kind of seen ineffective and that's how when student feels um some students feel like a lot of teachers don't care so they don't see the big deal over it um some are concerned when it comes to safety with lockdowns like if they needed their phone um how could they contact their parents that a big deal that I've heard especially from mainly underclassman so our freshman and sophomores um and then I interviewed a couple of my own teachers and they said it's very disrespectful when students are using their phone during instructional time especially because they feel like they have worked hard on a plan and just a lesson in general and it feels disrespectful when a student is not being engaged and one student and one teacher even went as far to say that students are aren't on their phone as much anyway so they don't see the big deal of phones are removed and the last kind of two are it's more of it's my own property or it's my own prerogative if I want to be on my phone these two students made it clear that if they're passing the class or if they're not that's their own business and it doesn't have anything to do with the teacher so this is kind of just an overview of um the overall cumulative data I've gotten from students at Prairie viiew and that's just kind of what um I've been seeing over the past couple months you're first okay um so our advice for the board is that we take more of a disciplinary action with um the phone policy um we thought that in the classrooms um there should be more responsibility that students have and teachers have towards the pH policy and how it's to be dealt with um we had two systems that we looked at for disciplinary um one was the point system which we recommend more and one was the strike system um the point system um is a policy that would take points off of students grades when they were on their phone during instructional time um if a teacher deems that it is all they're allowed to use their phones they don't have to use this policy it is only for when students are getting distracted in class and misbehaving with electronics another reason why the point system is more highly recommended is it's less disruptive because instead of nagging your student to put your phone away put your phone away you're just taking points off of them specifically and not interrupting the lesson itself we also looked at the strike system policy and there's various different ones throughout the schools but the system would basically be you get told hey put your phone away then your phone might get taken or your parents might get called it that varies but with what Jasmine said kids don't really like their phones being taken because it's like oh that's my property you can't really take it so that's why that one is less recommended would students be aware there being docked points uh I think we would make that known or teachers would make that known like hey this is something I do if I see you on your phone during this time then I will be removing points because if you're not listening to the lesson then why are you even here if you don't want to help yourself yes um we think that students should know the difference between work time and instructional time and being that um instructional time is just as important as work time we believe that um seeing it as a grade and getting points for if you're paying attention in class is important so knowing the difference between instructional time and work time should be something that teachers will have to know how to do then they would be able to use it during work time uh no um it depends on the teacher um if they say there's no phones allowed during work time then the policy will will still remain but if a teacher says that um as long as it's not being destructive we believe that um the phone policy they shouldn't have to have their grade being effective if it's not affecting their work during work time if a student got so many demerits that they were going to flunk the class anyways what would happen then because then there would be no real incentive to stop using your phone well then that's kind of their own problem and they can be a super senior if they really want to be so basically some of the questions you're asking actually covers um our second approach to how we deal with this problem and it deals a lot with like more accountability and I'm going to let Rachel and Draven explain that so um because the questions you were asking those were questions asked at our meeting too and so there was kind kind of a clear divide between how people thought the issue should be handled so kind of the um thing that I campaign the most for was that um at the end of the day it really does come down to student accountability and so the original issue with the policy itself it wasn't like the wording of the policy we all agreed that that was beneficial to student learning it was that it felt like a lot of emphasis was being put on the policy itself instead of how different that could look from classroom to class room or what that actually looks like um when students are affected and so we kind of suggested that maybe redefining the language of policy the language of the policy or the language um when communication is being sent out about the policy to make it seem less like you have to do this right now like this is a huge deal because um that was coming out at the same time as Communications um with the weapons detection system and it felt um odd that those two things were being put on the same pedestal especially when the phone policy comes um at the end of the day comes down to student responsibility when the weapons detection system was a very different thing happening in our schools um and so we kind of suggested that um there's less emphasis on taking phones of nagging specific disciplinary action taken um against like the phones themselves it's treating more like talking in class which would promote more student responsibility um like Zoe was kind of hinting too where you know when you're supposed to be on your phone you know when you're not supposed to be on your phone but it's the same with talking in class something um lenan brought up where uh it's you know when you're um if you're talking in class you shouldn't be talking in class if you're on your phone you shouldn't be on your phone in class but having like a strike system or a point system it seems counterintuitive to um like the discipline around that and um there's the mutual respect of teachers uh and students in their classroom and so that respect is um kind of assumed and so we see phones is more of a symptom of the problem than the actual problem themselves and it feels like being so um hard on phones is kind of treating a symptom instead of going to the root cause which is that um a lot of students especially after covid just don't respect their teachers but it also feels like teachers are kind of fed up with it all and so it seems like a lot of the blame is just being placed on phones when it could be other things um and then if like a student doesn't already care about their education punishment them for their phone use isn't really going to change that and so if you try and build up that responsibility or that accountability already you could see um greater benefits and then um like you mentioned there were some issues that we saw with the point system especially with it affecting already good students um that are just making a small mistake or um students that don't care anyway aren't going to care if their grade is being docked more than Adar would have if they're not paying attention in class [Music] did you just yeah sorry first time sorry um yeah um along with those there yeah again it does seem redundant to have extra disciplinary action um against phones when there's already a natural consequence to using your phones phone in class students that do that already are not paying attention as much which means they don't get as much work done their grade is going to go down either way and so again it just brings the bad students I guess lower and it hurts the good students for not really a substantial reason and again you said maybe if this student doesn't already care yeah maybe they'll fail that class they'll have to De Credit Recovery do makeup work take another year and that's going to happen you know whether or not they're being docked points off their phone um again this also when this consequence isn't being enacted by teachers and it feels more by the students you know if it's less of the teacher being like hey I'm the reason why you are doing worse and it's because of your phone if instead the student is knows I'm doing worse in this class and it's probably because I'm on my phone it'll drive them to have that own internal responsibility and accountability and that is much more reflective of the rest of your life the rest of your life whether you're at a job your phone doesn't get taken away from you you know and points don't get docked you lose your job or other you know consequences that aren't enacted by your employ employ you know there are just natural consequences and so again when students apply this to their own learning and their life it better reflects just the values going to go school in general to repair us for life and of course there are some drawback drawbacks to this approach uh because there of course will be students that um will simply take this as oh yeah I get to use my phone more often and again there will be consequences um but that fact that students cannot be forced to do well in class applies whether or not there's disciplinary action taking against phones or talking or any other thing either way students must make that choice for themselves themselves and this student accountability approach better reflects that in general yeah but we uh did want to bring up both because um obviously both approaches have some major drawbacks and so um kind of a combination of um both we thought was important can I ask oh I have a question it's good timing um my question was just are you looking at this primarily for high school level because you feel like at that point like it's your job to take accountability and that's what it looks like and then have you looked at the middle school policy and would you feel different about how that looks have you obviously you're not in those schools to gra that same data but what does that look like for you guys yeah um I definitely think that we probably should take a look into the middle school policy just to make sure that we're getting an accurate representation of um every single group that has been involved and then what was your first question sorry oh it was it was just regarding Middle School yeah um yeah so we've only been looking at the high school so far but I definitely think it would be a good approach to um take into consideration what's going on in the middle schools because I know like in certain middle schools they're a lot more strict about phone policies and even like at least at where I was in Middle School um we had like a home room and that's where we set our phones at the beginning of the day and we couldn't get them back till the end of the day but I know that a lot of times people are switching classrooms and there are emergencies that um I'm sure it's more likely for other schools to be um still able to be equipped with their phones did this data that you guys collected and all of the work that you did together were you kind of unanimous on coming up with this plan that like it needed to be or was that a hard thing for you guys since this is your first time tackling policy so I would say no I would say a very um for certain no because we had a very long discussion and I feel like our group was very split on opinions when it came to discipline and accountability and that's why we had to make two slides that's fair I'm really excited that you guys are doing the work and looking at this because um we know that you're like you have the scope that we don't have as board members and so I'm I'm really excited that you're bringing this work to us yeah also bouncing off of that there was a little bit of a banter of going between and hearing different ideas but I also think it was very beneficial to us as leaders and to build and expand on growth solely because we got to see a diverse range of different opinions in the room and it kind of gave us an example of advising and how not everyone's going to agree unanimously so it kind of showed new light because before we were just doing calendar updates but now we are able to dive deep into policies and connect more with our schools and to kind of hear each other differently because when we're only giving calendar updates we don't know each other's opinions on like phone policy safety um teacher student engagement so this kind of does open doors and New Horizons for us to be able to debate and to be able to come to a common ground that us as an advisory Council can advise and kind of speak for all students across 27j I was just going to say um this was very well done and very well thought out and I'm really impressed that you guys collectively did this some good life skills here cuz as an adult you'll find that you don't always agree and you have to collaborate even when you maybe don't agree or don't like each other or whatever and I just think it was really impressive what you guys did so Kudos good job um I think you'll find it interesting that this cell phone problem it's I don't think it's restricted just to high school students I mean I look down the board we all have our phones sitting right here like I think as adults we struggle with this too I mean I catch myself so many times a day just looking at my phone to did I miss anything and and I have to be it's it's making me aware of I should just put my phone away I don't know why I have it sitting up here like I don't need it during this meeting so um so I appreciate the work that you guys did taking that on yeah and it is you know there's definitely no right answer to this question at all and so again these like these two approaches either way um however anybody takes it like it will be better than this very you know inconsistent like just interpretation of the rules that we've had thus far and so yeah I'm personally I'm proud that we have been able to set on this compromise I wasn't expecting you guys to come down on the side of discipline I really wasn't I was really amazed about that um and director Thomas is right th this goes into my workplace too we we have a new policy where you can't even touch your phone when you're driving uh even at a stop sign or at a stoplight or whatever and when I'm driving around the and I hear that ping I'm just like oh what you know and that's where I I know the temptation of well it's on my watch I can I look at that but that is touching your electronic device and so ours is you can't touch an electronic device when you're driving down the car and so it's again it's keeping up with the electon on there too because again there this is a form of communication right here you know I I can get a lot of it just from this right here and so I think there is some inconsistency in there but I I really appreciate you guys delving into this issue and again agreeing to disagree on some issues too because that's that's the real world right there you don't always have this perfect consensus thank you oh you did you without anything else like if it's consistency a thing he's leading yeah from place to place like is that consistency in general would be some I think the hardest thing was just the policy in general students and teachers disagreed over how to interpret it and so then there essentially was no rule you know rules were different different between classes teachers schools all of it was completely different and while you know of course there will be some amount of inconsistency between classrooms and you know a policy has to um like abide for that but um either way having of taking some kind of approach that is more agreeable that makes more sense um to either side will just make it more make it easier in classes in general yeah and obviously when any good policy is implemented there's always going to be some drawbacks and errors but I think that the more that people get used to it and not even allow space for inconsistency like just make sure every teachers abiding by it from start to finish no like any um sorry there's like no amounts of like oh yeah you can answer that text now from like your boyfriend or something I don't think like if people want to be on their phones they should step outside if they have something urgent to attend to but at the end of the day we really want to promote people's attention people's willingness to learn in school which is why it's there um we don't want to waste any anyone's time and energy of our teachers who are working hard to um try to help us learn and the only way to do this is to make sure that there's no chance for um any rules to start to slip and people start to feel like they can get away with more things on their phone so um going on to the topic of consistency I feel like that's why both approaches could work because accountability takes into the fact that teachers are hands off and students are more Hands-On and they're prepared for like the real world and then the discipline approach is very specific and it should be the same all across the board so so so I have two final thoughts is that um okay so I know the the conversation around like it's that students fault so if they choose to be on their phone they're the ones that's distracting from their own learning they're going to hurt themselves when they don't pass this class and have to take credit recovery but do you find it disruptive if you're in class and then you see your neighbor like with their phone out like that causes distraction in your learning right and disruption in your learning just seeing your phone get your friend get their phone out that's true but it's also still on the topic of accountability of like if your friend has your phone out and you want to focus on your own learning you should be able to make that decision and like to totally focus in or you could move somewhere else move to another seat find like somebody else to work with there's always like the student accountability the student choice to do good in their class and then my last comment was just around like what is is there a next step in this process like we don't make policies on school or on phones in schools um like do you want are you preparing a report to give to your leadership Tyler's nodding his head like what's the next step of your of your work and and the thing I would just say is like watching these kids step into this this challenge you've got you've got the most accomplished kids in our school district right here I mean just incredible kids and and to be in a room where they had spirited debate but but always respectful always kind always thoughtful of like even impacts on teachers and their agency in their room and rules I mean they they were thinking levels deep that I mean we can't even do like it was just impressive what an incredible group of young people that that really started to step into being advisers to the board so I just think it's a lot to celebrate with these young men and women in this room here and I know you're at the back and I think that's a great as as the leader of that group and the and the chairman of that group he he chose to let everybody else participate which I I'll celebrate that for Tyler as well that was awesome you guys could you guys could present this to your student body like in a in a large assembly or something they wouldn't care no but but my question you guys also have like direct access to like the superintendent and the policies of the school district right so like if you want it to be consistent from school to school your own leadership isn't where you're at but like you're lucky cuz you have that guy so even though it's not our policy like you get Jamie White at those meetings and you get this guy at those meetings and those guys make that happen for you because they care about your voice so I'm impressed I don't think the students would care unless they made it into the actual policy I also want to jump off of that as someone who is unfortunately trying so hard in student council for student engagement um our assembly sometimes people don't even want to like stand up so like they'll just stare at you and you'll be like all right everybody let's stand up and do our chant they'll just sit there and look at you and it's like most of the school too but we're working on student morale over here so got to think on the brighter side of things hopefully if we get to the right people people will care and again we appreciate the work that you've done and hope you continue to do on more sub subjects this was a great first step what else you want to tackle I guess one other thing I would point out and there's a little bit of an inconsistency amongst you guys because you all said that you want that phone for an emergency how do you define an emergency do you really think that if you're in lockdown you need to text your mom oh my mom me well and again that's one of the frustrations that the district has is because a lot of times these students get out ahead can hold back a lot of these students get ahead of what's actually happening and they don't have a chance to notified and suddenly it's all over Facebook and social media and everything else and we've got 50 parents coming to the school because their child texted them so I I I know you guys said well we might needed an emergency there's a gray area there what do you define as you needed to text somebody about this that maybe the school didn't think that that was something or maybe we still hadn't figured out what was going on yet and suddenly you've alerted the public the media everybody that something could be happening are we have the system to tell parents things are going on you guys be jumping ahead of that I feel like this accounts for some students but not all students cuz some students just tell their mom hey we're in a lockdown don't be like freaking out we're okay we're safe I feel like that's the main text you send to your parents I'm saying that that that's a fine line and and that that can be that can be just as uh stressful for the school district and everything else when I have a hundred students all sending in a message that something's going on in the school and the Rumor M my KCK I think somebody got had a knife I think somebody had a gun you know and so suddenly on next door oh there's a gun at the school somebody shooting you know those things travel so much faster then then really even the district can get ahead of that and and so you guys are all saying we're fine with this policy unless it's an emergency I think interesting though like the same is true with us in our cell phones because like as adults we haven't been taught necessarily to like fine comb things and not share things and do those things so um I sit with you guys when I hear you say like hey as kids we're going to have to do this next year we're going to go into the world and we're going to be 18 and like yeah you'll be in this and so like I respect the idea that you guys should have that power and we should all be learning together how to utilize it properly so um yeah you're adults in my world so everything that you're saying makes sense and we use our cell phones terribly as adults too okay if I may for just a minute to your point of like in the essence of an emergency like what defines an emergency I think it's more of like a sense of security for us like as students like it's it's we have access to a lot of the media you social media as you guys do and it's just it's kind of scary especially like as an 18-year-old who's about to go off to college like I will be in Grand Junction um and I want to be able to text my mom she's not going to drive up there in four hours but it's just the fact that I can be like Mom there's something going on at the school I don't know what it is but like Tada um I'm saying I would do that I think for a lot of these students though it's it really is just that like sense of security that like if it comes down to it heartbreakingly they could send their parent appealing to the parent and all of you like they could send their parent a last video like like if that's what it comes down to and I think it's I know I know it's it's super hard um I know and it's it's these are the kinds of things that we have to think about and that's why we're trying to propose it I know yeah and also oh sorry go on so also what I was thinking about it's also a part of that consistency thing if a um student stent receives like a test a text message and they can see like it's from their parents or something they can always step out of the classroom and attend to that in A Private Matter without um disrupting the whole class and or disrupting their learning they can just go out in the hallway and take care of it and they come back in when they're ready yeah um I agree and also I mean here's a little bit of a a soft story I guess uh but my friend was in class and it was seventh period and his mom texted him during class and told him that his cat was about to die and and I don't know maybe you want some of you don't consider that an emergency but my friend really loves his cat and so that was really important for him to know and at that exact time and of course if your phone is confiscated you might not be able to get that sort of information and I understand because rumors do spread I mean absolutely insanly like wildfire but the question I I ask is you know will that change depending on what policy you have there's still passing periods and lunches and rumors spread either way um so I feel like either way it just comes on to the student and yeah if I said it was a text from my mom can I just walk out of the room and say this is a really important text for my mom I gotta go that is you could do that and you'd be missing class time you'd be missing instructional time and that's on you it'll be your loss when you miss out I mean I think as parents we have to have the responsibility don't text your kid unless it's an emergency right like as parents I think we have to have that responsibility but I get what you're saying I I I think it's a trust thing like we need to trust you to we need to teach you and trust trust you to use your phones responsibly just as adults have to um so I I agree with not Banning phones not confiscating them but I like I like your thoughts of having some some consequences if you're using it irresponsibly I mean as you can see across the board we have like we have very split opinions but I feel like we all agree on some stance I guess yeah in honor thank you guys time we're going to take a step back and go but you've given us a lot of ideas for our next few months but thank you so much for your time we're excited for the next report thank you very much okay next up is our superintendent report superintendent will pierce will report on activities throughout the district go ahead take it over sir well thank you all very much uh I I jump right into a groundbreaking um I know there were a few of us there um um to to celebrate the groundbreaking and that was a a Monumental day a couple weeks ago couple of announcements that that stemmed from that is that that we do believe now is the the construction time to build this school um any delay of that construction program would would could hinder future commitments from from our 2021 Bond program uh we did advertise and talk about a potential delay in the opening um we seem to have beat um the the neighborhood enrollment out to that area and our Middle School programming and we had a history of building neighborhood schools where come on in the neighbors weren't weren't yet into that neighborhood at now and we we don't in any of our forecasting thanks to the fpac group have kind of said that there's not a there's not a boundary we could cut that would fill that seat easily now we think this is an incredible opportunity um for us to engage the community because there there are still options about how we could open that school um those are things that we just probably would like to do with our community and not not to our community um things uh magnet schools those those could be options what we want to do with k8s grade configurations those things could all facilitate it opening earlier but again without engaging our community and trying to figure out what what do we want to what this school to be and and then considering the impacts across the school district as as we think about what what that does is dominoes fall like our whole school system is kind of an ecosystem on those things so was was an incredible groundbreaking so much fun to do um that construction jhl and that construction team is going to take off our department we we are so proud of them and their planning and making sure that we're ready to go in that and and build the way but we're still we're still doing some work and that work's coming this is kind of an update because it's been a while since we've received one um from from our attorneys um in the do versus Philip wiser Suz Susanna Cordova and School District 27j um that first bullet there um uh Wednesday October 23rd plan has filed uh an amendment verified complaint and and basically they meaning instead of responding to our motion dismissed we I gave you that update a while ago we we filed the motion to dismiss they could edit and amend their original PL plff and then resubmit it and and that was it's it's it's completely allowable under the law uh then again on November 5th we again filed another motion to dismiss and we have not yet heard back so just that's kind of been out in The Ether and where' that go oh what happened with that I just thought that was important that that you and the community know that we're still in the middle of filing and dismissing and see where that goes uh really cool story here um if you don't know uh biddy and Bose's coffee shop um it's it's a a uh people with disabilities adult people with disabilities run that store and our TLC kids who are are are students with disabilities that are also thriving and having jobs when to go visit and and they came home like I I'm going to work as a barista there I'm going to do this stuff and it's just fun to be for those kids to feel that this is a place for me and a cool place for us so I just that that that bidy and Bose is a is a coffee shop Boulder we would encourage anybody to go there it's a cool thing but just a really cool experience for our transitional learning center kids and our transitional learning center is the kids from 18 to 21 that have got done with their high school but we're giving them a transitional plan getting them work into the work force and so they have a really cool story and um just we never get updates about that and I thought you should know they got some cool stuff some people don't know we've been doing lots of safety talks U one of the things we have not talked a ton about is just the the efforts that we put into our district Emergency Response Team so we call it a dirt um um that is the dirt group or not all of them but you can see some familiar faces in there about how our district might uh November 4th we did a district exercise and it's always a wicked wicked problem that involves everybody collaborating in this scenario changes uh local police department was there helping us run that drill Rachel you know Rachel and Sam they were exemplary in helping us have a functional exercise and functional exercise if you don't know we we actually practice as it if it was live we we only talked on the radios Terry's sitting like two feet from me and I'm not supposed to talk to him because we're in different rooms but of course we're cheating um Brett was down the hall but everybody was in different places and we needed budget we needed lunch and we need buses running and like it was it was a good coordination exercise of how we might respond in a functional exercise and Michael did a good job as our Incident Commander that day and tried to Wrangle a really complex problem together so that's fun uh I got a chance to go I saw Stars One of stars kids at this um Tim M this is just these little things that I don't think all of us you you as board members can't possibly imagine the amount of Awesomeness that happens in our school district on a day you hear of big sporting events and you hear of cool major cool things uh our our prayview High School uh Nicole Dolan the te child development class teacher they have all of those kids all those kids standing on the outside of that gym are Prairie View High School kids involved in the Child Development CT Career Technical education pathway they go and Mentor fifth graders right and and and those fifth graders they have signs like this is their first introduction so they have signs like here I am I'm Bob Smith come find me and the kids the fifth graders Cindy Ritter that she's the one Speaking there the principal there at Tim they they go and find those kids and if you could have seen those fifth graders how excited they were to meet these high school kids and then these high school kids get a try on like do I really want to talk and help Mentor kids or this job's not for me right so it's kind of a fun thing but great energy in that that room I thought that was cool uh another another thing that was cool this last week on uh on the 11th just on Monday we had a district wide collaboration day and a districtwide collaboration day all of the the secondary Science High School science teachers this is their room this is high school science they were all meeting across the district Prairie View Riverdale Innovations and options all talking about how we can better our efforts and improve science and then there's a math room and there's an elementary PE room and an elementary music and art and teachers from across the district in a collaboration I just think it's really cool when you've got to see all of our teachers and very different differing rooms at Riverdale Ridge talking about how they can grow as as Pros together it's just a really cool thing and sometimes people wonder what are we doing on Mondays well this is something that we did on Mondays and really proud of that group and all of our teachers for just engaging wed to be better for kids it's pretty cool stuff uh on Monday as well and I didn't make this event but Jamie Bell was up there uh we had about 65 students from Riverdale Ridge and Brighton High School competing at Deca districts which is cool uh we did safety checks take two uh we've had two different practices I updated you last time about that was take take one and we were not very successful but we promise continual Improvement uh Riverdale High School yesterday got all of their kids in 1500 kids in by 8:26 and school starts at 8:20 so we're just a little bit late at at Riverdale rids but that's a much better Improvement than last time with only 4% of our student flag and Brighton High School had much greater success than they did step one but we're we're not quite getting all kids we're about 231 kids short of getting all of our students in by 826 this morning when we called that one prayview has prayview and Innovation options both have their their practice runs tomorrow and so continuous Improvement every time we learn I know Melinda was there at Brighton High School today every time we learn we get a little better and we we keep we keep growing and getting better I think we'll be ready for second semester for sure for that so that's cool and then we also you know that we engaged in safety nights uh I think our last calculation Janelle we live streamed those and we had over what was it 6,000 6,000 views of our safety nights um which is kind of a new way of community we we were trying to figure out when you meet in person um who shows up in person but many people watch that video or Jamie White's mom watched her proud daughter six and all of her relatives 6,000 times but but but just just the views we're we're we give us a new idea of how we might collaborate with our community and it might not all be come to the town hall like it used to but you can watch you can live stream you can still engage from the comfort of your home and I thought that was good data our schools are all doing a jumping off thing and having a much more interaction tabletop sit down with your principal and talk about safety sit down with your APS talk about safety those are all at 6 o00 and that's the schedule if anybody viewing online would like to watch um prayer VI High School uh Brighton um Riverdale they're all going to further engage because parents might have specific questions about safety or their safety checks or what's going on so that that that's exciting stuff uh I wanted to update this group on District calendar um we we have we're close to finalizing a school calendar there's a couple hiccups in it um uh we we've never really taken a a a different approach to our 4-day calendar to to address some of the pain points that we've experienced as a community and as a school district so one of the biggest problems is the the flexibility when you start in August and have to be done by Memorial Day and I have 150 days in there with Christmas break and holiday breaks and spring break there's just not flexibility so you you remember days where um this year we started school on a Friday and parents were like why would you start on a Friday this is so inconvenient and I'm sorry Rachel think that happened well the answer is Kathy and I know CU we've been the calendar committee that's when 150 days starts and there is no flexibility some parents remember getting feedback on December 23rd we have school who made this schedule said my mom until I told her it was me um there's just not flexibility so the only way we could do that is to try to find some flexibility with that um the the start the the start date that continues to move forward further into August we've had feedback about why are we starting in August 5th August 6th August this year next year would be August 5th and August is been a very hot month challenging you hear every year that we're challenging our our cooling efforts uh so we've been playing with our system and our our our Educators across our district trying to figure out how we could solve some of these operational challenges and and we think we're close to releasing a calendar so wanted to give you an update on that we're not quite at the finish line yet we still have some more work I'm looking at Kathy of course she's involved so and then there is an interest in both of our high school since our pristine calendar that there's no end of there's no assessment days um for elementary or middle or high schools on finals like the last day of finals they teachers still work a full day kids still go a full day that closing out of semester has been really hard with 4 days so we're trying to see if we can come up with some options to make that that go I just wanted you guys to be aware because hopefully we can get through this collaboration and we'll have have a media release of that here soon November 18th ESC is closed again um we will still be fully operational just remotely so people that reaching out to to the ESC want to get a hold of any of our departments will still be able to do so but um that construction around our building loss of Wi-Fi and most importantly phones so it's hard for us to have a work space when you really can't do work there um Janine and uh and Jamie Boda both spoke a public comment they if you remember they spoke about dyslexia last time and I know that it's important for the board for we we don't follow up at the moment but that we took those comments serious and and just for our board to know um we have set sent teams of people um to take dyslexia to go to CDs dyslexia training reviewing the handbooks um we we've we've we've have a number of thing efforts and I can't I won't read them all but um we we are creating our own 27 J dyslexia handbook we've got work in Pro progress we've got School coaches that are working and we we are equally working on dyslexia as as as as a school system as well just like our our parents I think and and Jamie were urging us to make sure that we're doing that um we are in the middle of that work and um very excited uh for the people uh in the back who don't know um or are two friends in the audience or or or people watching um very excited to spend December 5th through the 7th uh with our with our with our board um that's an investment of time away from your families you guys do a lot of that stuff and really grateful that you would show up take time go to car springs engage in casb uh to be a better school board and and to learn about what best boards around the metro area are doing so that that's that's really cool exciting and if you were really wanted um to be part of this this school board we are still accepting applications for director district 6 so I'll add that and that will conclude my report you know uh one of the things that really surprised me when I came to Colorado was the full week off at Thanksgiving uh that that was something that we didn't had ever experienced before and the other districts where we went to that that entire week was off of Thanksgiving and we thought that was really strange we would go to school the Wednesday and then you got off Thanksgiving um and I I understand your struggles uh and I wonder if if we we maybe can't look at a special Monday that that would have classes to help build it in there where maybe you know not necessarily maybe one a month or one a quarter or whatever so that because you know again when you run add into snow days and everything else that's when you start running into that time where we just can't call it snow day anymore because we don't have any despair or anything else but but I know that and we've talked about this that we doubt we could ever take away for this four day school week again uh because our parents are so used to it are accustomed to it but maybe if it was scheduled in advance or something that maybe we could look at a day where we could build in a Monday uh so to give us some flexibility in that so just I'm just spitballing here yeah well I think that's with this group did we we we engaged in a process called rapid prototyping so we we made a prototype processed it through our our our our school communities to see would people work would that work we learned really quickly that a lot of things that we wanted to chase aren't interesting not interested don't want to do those things we created another prototype try and we and we've been kind of engaging in this prototyping trying to figure out what could be the path to create some flexibility because that that hard start at the beginning of the year impairs our ability to start sometimes like you know this this next year calendar if we weren't to do we'd have we'd have like two professional development days before we'd have kids that's really onboarding fast um so th those things without building in some flexibility that that that's just the interest that we would have so yeah we're working on it and so I just wanted you guys to know it's an operational thing but clearly you guys should be in the know of that stuff I have just two questions have has collaboration Day always been a thing or is that something new that you brought e and I have one more question from your presentation um in the slide where you said like we're we broke ground on the Middle School we're all excited about it and then we don't know have the numbers to get that that 50% for opening and like are we concerned now with looking at Trends around the state you know Denver just released that they're going to shut down a bunch of public schools Douglas County did pter Valley is are we getting to a place where that might be a thing and now we're going to build these two new schools and then have space that we no longer needed that we used Tax funding for well if you were to go out where where out out west and those who went to the groundbreaking you could stand there at the groundbreaking and from my view you could literally see the growth coming it just didn't hit us at the same timeline we thought it would right so they're now developing there's Road scrapers there roads infrastructures going in pipe you you can see that growth is coming our enrollment still says that that are we're growing we we're we're not declining enrollment we are still growing and this year I don't know the final numbers from Jeremy so I don't want to commit to them because that's important that we're accurate with those final numbers but but we were growing almost 800 kids this year right so we're we're still in the growing phase of 27j our neighborhoods are still developing Terry and carry do have done a great job planning and making sure that we stay up on those projections and those numbers um but didn't didn't the growth didn't hasn't hit a chem to us yet so this will be the said it's either a problem right or it's an opportunity and so so within this opportunity if we're going to work on what are we going to do at middle schools out in Talon Ridge we we could think about what we do at all of our middle schools to make these viable options for our families and kids and make them have confidence in sending their kids to middle school we we need to review and reanalyze what we we've got K8 is that something people are really committed to we want k8s is Middle School what we want like we we we have not pulled our communities on the educational planning of school district in a long time and so I think these are this opportunity to to lean in and collaborate and it's part of one of the things i' I'd love to have a study session about this whole topic with you to get you up on just some of those developments other questions this is be spilling pain wow next up is our matters of public comment the board will now hear public comment on the following topics that have been indicated on the signup sheet just one uh a reminder that this board meeting is a business meeting held in public not a public meeting the board hears public comment to learn about the preferences and concern of our communities therefore tonight we will listen we are prohibited by state law to take any action on items because Law requires formal public notice prior to any action on an agenda item during our next meeting if appropriate such as tonight we will consider your comments our discussions we will ask that the superintendent attempt to find an answer for any of your questions by that time the board welcomes the comments of our community members but to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to participate we have a few ground rules that you will follow I Will Follow by this the signin sheet and speakers comments are limited to three minutes uh and we ask you to refrain from making comments or negative com comments against uh individual students or District employees however we cannot prevent you from doing so such complaints and comments should be addressed first at the classroom or School level and then still unreel unresolved to the superintendent so uh we hope you won't disturb our good order with inappropriate language or gestures and that would be grounds for removal but we thank you for your participation tonight and I have one Janine please come forward Janine Runa and she would like to talk about the re act please give us your uh whether you're in District or out of District in your name and proceed thank you for coming out tonight kids um Janine rilla I'm in District and I'm going to talk about the react um today I've really struggled on what I wanted to talk to you guys about I know I've shared a lot of data with you guys I have some more data to share with you but I think it's more important to kind of share what happened this morning this morning there was a group of um Advocates students parents that went to the CDE um Board of Education meeting couple things that we all had in common as parents our kids are struggling if they have dyslexia or they might have dyslexia and don't know it um the struggle to read and not be at grade level with your peers is causing lots of um health issues me mentally with depression anxiety one of the moms even lost her daughter in high school to suicide because of it so I know it's recorded I know I seem like a broken record but it really impacts our students and our kids a lot and I know you guys are working on things but for me it can't come fast enough um so I really hope that you guys take the time to listen to that meeting this this morning um a couple other things that I wanted to mention is um while the middle schools are starting to do the read plan I don't think they're quite doing it the way the ACT intended most of the read act minutes that that they're having to do is at home with a computer program not in class with a trained teacher during school hours they're having to do it at home on a computer program the progress monitoring that they're doing for it is through the program I've received my daughter's report it doesn't tell me squat it might mean something to the par to the teachers because it's red yellow or green depending on if they needed extra help with this section but it doesn't tell me is my is my daughter progressing the way she needs to to show that this program is what she needs so now I'm left waiting until December when they take fast Bridge again to see is she still where she needs to be is she below is she making progress is it enough progress that she'll ever catch up to grade level and that's frustrating as a parent the redact wants progress reporting every two to four weeks they might say that they're doing that with Lexia it doesn't show us anything to know if they're making progress and if they're not making progress does the district even have another thought or idea or delivery method to get these kids where they need to be I don't know it doesn't seem like it from my perspective because there's so much hope banked on Lexia that I don't think anybody can see outside of it and that's really frustrating as a parent the other part that's frustrating is I know earlier in the school year I talked about communication with parents I'm still having to request fast bridge data from my school for my kid I'm still having to request the district assessments for my student those are still not being given out to parents those are huge helpfulness to know if our kids are getting what they need they're good delivery talks for teachers to talk to parents but if someone doesn't know to ask for it they don't I don't know why you guys are not giving it to them when there are parent reports for both of those it's like you guys are trying to hide the lack of progress from students from parents I mean I don't know what else to make from it thank you again we appreciate you coming out and I look forward to the summary that will come to us at our next board meeting about this read act information you presented I'll s you know we appreciate your concern and participation Janine we really do thank you uh next up is item nine a consent agenda all matters listed under the consent agenda are operational matters about which the board has governing policies implementation of which is designated to the superintendent they will be enacted in one motion by category in the order listed below there will be no discussion of these items prior to the time the board of directors vote on the motion uh uh any member of the public who wishes to discuss the consent to Jen item should notify the president of the board at the time requested and be recognized by invitation of the president to address to the board and there was none uh the items in consent agenda this week this month are a approval of the Board of Education minutes stated October 23rd 2024 study session and regular meeting and B approval of personnel items uh dated November 7th uh 2024 which was the confidential in enclosure do I have a motion I move to approve the consent agenda as presented second second I have a motion from director wilh home and a second from director KH can you give me a roll call vote director carbajal I director Khan I director green of course director Thomas I director tro I director wilham I motion carries thank you thank you next up is our governance process that supports our Global goals here's we'll have reports from various directors first up ownership linkage director cabal and director Khan uh we have not M next up the capital facility fee Foundation and we have not met um we met last Thursday and we approved the previous minutes we discussed the attorney that was um retiring and were updated on the new possible attorneys um Carrie is leaving yes and I can't remember anything else that's what I got and the capital facility fees continues to uh have a healthy balance and it will be available for uh uh withdrawals for upcoming schools that we are currently underway with so up next is our Rocka Mountain risk director C we have meeting coming up on Monday 27j Believers we have nothing to report but we'll do another round of Awards in the spring Commerce City and School District 27 day use tax committee which we also have not met uh 2015 2021 Bond oversight committee we have not met 2022 M Levy override oversight committee uh we don't have a meeting this month we have one next I look forward to hearing that the bright youth commission director Trill tell us about it um my first meeting got cancelled so I'm looking forward to the next one not I I just looked if you just want to amend um the bond oversight we meet next Thursday the 21st I didn't have that date in front of me uh next up would be other matters of information for the board the board is going to consider revising policy 2D which board officers and meeting conduct to include requiring at a minimum retaining recordings of board meetings made pursuant to Colorado uh statues 22- 32-18 5 C uh would you like to have some discussion on that or you want to just go ahead you had some enclosures that get that summarized what what was going on there lenan did you want to make any comments on this I sure can and I can ask question or answer questions whatever um basically we never provided a live stream prior to covid and then with that covid um and all of the meetings going virtual we offered the live stream option which came with a recording option and then once the meetings came back into inperson meetings we continued that live stream just for the convenience of our community to watch those as we'll said tonight either live or at a later time and the board had never really adopted a policy about recordings we had always followed the statute I delete them after 90 days the audio that I have going right now plus the audios that you do in executive session when that is allowed by law and so I had been thinking about this those those live streams are out there on the YouTube channel and I spoke with Melissa Barber and said what would you recommend deleting them like we do the audio recordings and her recommendation is to follow the statute get rid of those audio recordings as well as those YouTube recording ings and just be consistent on both of those recordings of the meeting so and she recommended that the board adopt a policy that we had not done before yeah when I went to that um casby fall meeting one of the sessions we had was an attorney and they spoke to us about um he was like 90 days he like whatever you have delete it on day 91 so that was their recommendation also and I admit there are inconsistencies I think 20 um Adams 12 will do a year I think DPS because our server has room for anything and it's held on the YouTube server that we can hold them as long as possible but once you have a policy it's deleted after 90 days and that is the recommendation of our attorney as well I think for that same reason and I think some of the discussions that we've had about this is that um providing we meet the state statutes there wasn't much of a reason to keep it beyond the 90 days and actually could be a negative effect that they might be used against us uh later on when you know opinions might have changed or we might have said something off the cuff where it suddenly could become a big deal so I I think that's kind of why uh we are uh more amable to following the state statutes and and not leaving them out there just to come back to haunt us at some other time or just uh being out there without any cont text uh which is also what some of the if it's just there on YouTube they could take Snippets they could take portions of it and just say this is what they said when that may not be in the full context of really what was said do I have a motion might I have to get back to my other job thank you we appreciate that thank you both everybody I mov to approve the revisions to board policy 2D board officers and meeting conduct as presented oh gosh I have a motion from director Thomas and a second from director caral can I have a roll call vote director carbahal yes director Khan I director green you beta director Thomas I director tro I director Wilhelm I thank you very much motion carries thank you get to deleting we did we ski board education I mean I don't have anything to report other than we have a meeting now scheduled on 21st let's have some discussion uh on ownership linkage director car Hall director Khan do you have any updates on over ownership linkage no we talked about that one okay how about on board education um we just missed this one in the in the list I don't have anything new to report I know we've talked about some board education topics I love your idea of talking having a education session around growth in our district um we have a we have a great opportunity with our meeting and December to to have some good board education so that would be my report very good next up item 11 uh I've been promised uh the board asked to accept or reject the following report submitted since last meeting there was none at this time and B uh superintendent will pierce will present the expectations of the board report through 3H emergency executive succession as conveying reasonable interpretation of his executive limitations and it's supposed to be the shortest report of the year I will I will live up to the hype this is your 3H uh uh board policy um this is the the writing I've told you this is your policy it your policy basically ask that we have somebody that carry out the duties of the superintendent should they be out of state out of country out of pocket unavailable right and so um with today's technology we don't always need that but there are occasions where you would um there are two members that ask for two members at least two members of of of to be named for executive succession um the two people are the most senior leaders on our staff of of all the executive group of you've heard my thoughts of how incredible they all are um Terry Lucero and uh Michael CLA will serve as those executive succession people in my absence of course they will be supported by the entire team um this is also the time of the report where I tell you how many times I've done executive secession which is zero and that I do plan on communicating with you when I am absent and naming an executive successor which will happen tonight as my wife and I are going to go for her birthday uh for a long weekend in Las Vegas so I will be sending you that report later but uh all all is up and I report compliance and you can see there's a paragraph Tom that's it's all fits into that one little spot there and it's beautiful thank you do I have a motion I moved to accept the expectations of the board report through 3H executive succession as conveying reasonable interpretation of the executive limitations I'll second that I love watching the light battles go on here um uh so I have a motion from director carbahal in a second from director will home and uh a recommendation that you place a bet on our behalf uh could you please take a real call V director carbal I director Khan I director green yes director Thomas I I director tro I director Wilhelm I motion carries thank you very much last time a friend of mine went to Las Vegas I got a keychain you I was really kind of let down um you're the white elephant well exactly let me know before we go we're going to do that uh our policy review schedules is as follows on December 11th we'll take up board awareness and support and the external Financial conditions and activities and then soon enough we'll be into 2025 where we'll talk about the treatment of Faculty staff and volunteers and internal Financial conditions and activities next up we got a proclamation recognizing November 18th through the 22nd as American Education week the board will now consider approving Proclamation number 2 2024 to 2025 recognizing that week as American Education week and at this time director Jil will read that Proclamation Proclamation number 2 2024 2025 American educ week whereas public schools are the backbone of our democracy providing young people with the tools they'll need to maintain our nation's precious values of Freedom Civility and equality and whereas by equipping Young Americans with both practical skills and broader intellectual abilities schools give them hope for and access to a productive future and whereas education employees be they teachers substitute teachers par professionals and Department staff that work work in transportation nutrition services custodial office technology Communications Finance Safety and Security student achievement intervention services Human Resources construction planning and operations work tirelessly to serve our children and communities with care and professionalism and whereas schools are Community Lynch pins bringing together adults and children Educators and volunteers Business Leaders and elected officials in a common Enterprise now therefore the Board of Education of 27j schools does hereby proclaim the week of November 18th through the 22nd 2024 is the annual observance of American Education week you've heard the Proclamation do I have a motion move to approve the proclamation number 2 224-225 as presented I second it so close I have a motion from director home and second from director Thomas roll call vote director carbahal yes director KH I director green yep director Thomas I director tro I director wilham I motion carries thank you thank you very much this next item is the uh director district 6 vacancy uh we had kind of left this thing open-ended in case we had an application but as this point we have not had any applications from anyone in the director 6 uh area the district six vacancy area uh the timeline is as follows did you want to go over that uh lenan so once we declared the vacancy December 8th is the 60th day for the Board of Education to um appoint and we can take applications at that point in time we would if we got one next week we could possibly look at it review it um call a special meeting interview soin whatever the the board wishes to do um we have until January 7th which is the 90th day for the board president to basically appoint meaning if there is somebody out there that is interested could still do the interview process and that type of thing run it by you guys but board president could appoint as well so they extend that a little bit um I reached out to our attorney and said you know what if we don't get anyone and we can continue to leave it open and I would kind of check timeline and I think what we would do is we would update it every month in a board meeting and the notes would reflect still out there still looking that type of thing um so that's kind of where it's at I know I have heard in at my conferences there are some smaller districts that sometimes just run with a vacancy I hope we don't because we are a large vac we are a large District but there are some that that run that if they've pilfered all of their people in a very small um community that they've just kind of gone to that way well so that's kind of what that timeline is um we can accept applications once one comes in it's on the website that we would just have it active I had put on there a deadline of Monday at noon for something to review be reviewed at this meeting so that you could possibly have reviewed it and we could possibly have interviewed or sworn in or whatever um that would give us time but now it's just going to be open and if something comes in then we would deal with it at a December meeting or at a special meeting if for some reason something comes in fairly soon can I I just bring up something that's sort of related but not exactly that I have been working on or thinking about and working with like the um other board members at my Rocky Mountain wring something we've talked about um and some research that went through that so A few years ago they passed so you could pay School Board of Education members and a lot of our districts across the state have went ahead and went to the model where they get paid and some of the data for that is it like we couldn't Sor I don't my things on we couldn't get paid because we're currently serving or sitting but in the future we could pay board members and some of the data that comes with that is that um we'd get a diverse group of people who set up here because typically what we get are people who can afford to come and do this because their other work supports that and when you start to give a a stipend you get more interest and potentially a diverse group of people that are sitting at the board um so I don't know if we would like to discuss what that looks like as a board of education again it doesn't impact us as board members um but we could think about the the future of our district and having some Buy in from people so we don't sit with vacant seats I think that's the point of not being paid though is so we have people who really want to be here and want to do this work right I mean health insurance would be nice but still like I mean well that can be that can be a form of of STI of um pay if you look across um all of public officials in the state of Colorado school boards were the last ones to take any sort of stien so any City councils are paid um anybody serving in house is paid anybody serving in Adams County um as Commissioners is paid we're the only ones but we're making education Choices for Children and so how do we diversify boards there's just a lot of research that goes into it and I'm not saying I have the answers it just might be something that we want to discuss and opening the doors because a lot of other districts have moved to that model and it can be through Insurance maybe asy that might be part of it right like somebody could say hey I could but we could provide insurance for a board member it can look different yeah and and you're correct that if we made this decision none of us could be a could benefit from it it would only be the future ones and it may even be future elected ones too I don't think we could even have it apply to an appointed one if I'm if I'm not mistaken but I'd have to look at that uh I guess the other argument is is that we'd be taking money away from the kids uh you a stiping is not cheap you know even if it's per meeting or whatever and I think before we have that discussion we may want to come up with what that would actually cost and again the impact would it would take away from it it you know it may be what what it cost uh a 100 kids to have meals yeah you know like I said that that's one of the discussions is is that if your heart is really into it uh it's hard to say uh we should be we should look at that because of what we would be taking away yeah and I don't think that I have the answer I was just bringing it up because there's a lot of research that's being done around that and the diversity of a board also has impact on kids that are looking at board members sitting up here and we've talked about that in the past you know so it's just what are the implications and what are the benefits I don't know but I have the answers I just think it's something we could look at when we have vacant seats because what happens when next year nobody runs for this because politics are what they are and then we have four vacant seats and we're not able to move forward and provide good quality leadership for the kids in our community they deserve that and you're right wanting to be here is part of it but like not everyone has that commodity and I would be happy to look at that statute off of the top of my head I think it's like $150 per meeting I'm not sure if we could compensate with um health insurance or not if that's more whatever I'd be happy to look at the statute run it by Melissa Barber and I could also um do a survey with my kosa group and see how many districts around the area actually have really put put that out there and how many have gotten candidates or board members with it or or not I'd be happy to do that research that would be easy yeah I think that's a good place to start next study session let's let's let's look at some numbers yeah um but as we currently are uh if if an application came today again it doesn't preclude us from having a vote on it I know that the option is there for the board president to appoint after December 8 but uh even in in my discussions I I would not want this to be a dictatorship I would want you guys to have buy it and vote on it too so you know I'm not I'm not saying that we're GNA I'm going to draw the line and I'm going to appoint somebody and I'm we don't we're not at that point yet uh but we could always at any future board meeting have an interview with someone or or two people depending on how many we get and then take a vote on it at the same time we didn't necessarily have to I I know previously we had a night scheduled for interviews nothing came of all but we could always make that part of the board meeting uh so that we didn't have to add another meeting into the into it because you know somebody's getting all of us together can be difficult uh the other thing to consider is that uh after our discussions tonight our uh District Six boundaries will change uh at the next board meeting and so we we may want to see what that what what opportunities that might might present uh for someone in the future there too so but I I would encourage you guys to keep asking around I I had asked and they ran outad of the same thing they said not if it wasn't paid and I kind of felt a little bit insulted because we're doing it and we we're willing to do Point not everyone can and not everyone can but this was a person that probably could have but they they just still wanted to get paid they were retired uh but they still wanted money so again you're right it it may but we P food and and desserts wait and it's not about us so that's the next piece like I want to say like I'm not saying that I need this type and I recognize that doesn't change me but it's changing the future of boards like in data right now so looking at this stuff and having lenan do their research like just opens doors for us to understand the like why that's a thing like we know all of our city council gets all of those things some of them would not run and you know why a lot of politicians stay in house until they're 90 because that's what they get from that work so like there has to be some benefit even to great service and again like I said but it would never ever affect any of us even if we voted on it and we got elected on the next time we would it would not be able to uh uh affect us if I'm if I think that's the way the statute is written um lenette you gave a January date January 8th 9th something like that um so uh December 8th is the end of the 60th day for the board to appoint and then Jan January 7th is the end of the 90th day that the board president would appoint but so then after that like is does it just stay open forever if if Tom could not or if there is not someone who comes forward that would be willing to be appointed then we would just continue it to be open and do do what we need to do we can't force anybody he can't go into a house and pull somebody out and go here like the next election right yeah yeah so it's like it would just stay open anyone could apply at any time until the next election which would be in November or you know that's the next year November 2025 MH yep and that's also one of the struggles is that even if they got appointed they'd have to run right again the next year if they wanted to stay so you would get either appointed caretaker or somebody that would basically be in creating an incumbent so all right that's that's that's our options we're still looking uh and uh if if anybody out there watching would be interested please uh the information is on the website submit an application uh if you pass the background check and uh y we will we'll interview you and we'll talk about it all right and per our attorney I'm going to make notes in the minutes that you talked about it that we have not had any applications and as of now he she said just to keep updating that in the board minutes that you guys are discussing and that you're just tracking that timeline and then I'll put also that we're going to research the the statute of paid board members and it was also mention report too good job thank you uh next up is our schedule of meetings uh December 5th through the 8th the majority of us here are going to be uh learning more about being on a school board at our Colorado Association of school boards conference an annual conference down there in Colorado Springs uh we look forward to that and also our youth group will also be down there and so that's a really nice thing we we love to see uh the impression that it l lends on them that that's that's really kind of a a fun thing our next uh on our final meeting of the year will be December 11th uh that's a study session in a regular meeting oh no it is not going to be our final meeting of the year because we have added something to our schedule uh December 21st we are going to have a study session uh a downloading session about our casby conference and just a what did you call it I didn't call it anything you called it something it was like a retreat or something like that yeah it was was a retreat so December 21st uh and it'll be public notice from 9:00 am. until noon uh we are going to have our end of the year meeting and Retreat and white elephant gift exchange it's going to be just fun all the way around so further details will follow if you find a top to be awes it's going to be so much fun uh the next quarterly immed evaluation will be occurring at the December 11 2024 meeting when director Thomas will present that evaluation and this will bring our evaluation scheduled to the regular December March June and September schedule's closing so that'll be the last one of the year uh are there any closing comments for this evening uh just wanted to make it aware December 11th for that meeting my son Caleb has another band concert so I will be late but I will be here between 6: 45 and 7 I'm surprised we don't invite Caleb's band to play for us we used to always have entertainment what's up with that we need some more entertainment in this is there any other discussion items yeah maybe some Christmas carols or something let's let's let's let's get going here I would love to see it at this point our agenda is exhausted and there's nothing else to talk about I declare this meeting adjourned at 8 uh 37 for
