okay we will move on to item number eight discussion items all right good evening chair and Commissioners happy New Year happy New Year welcome to 2025 I hope you all had a good uh good holiday season and um are excited for another another year of fun in Parks and Recreation so um so with that the first item I have is just some updates on Park projects um would like to acknowledge that earlier tonight we did have a work session um we were able to hear from um our part Public Works director Brian Jung um who shared with um the park and wreck commission an update regarding the camp program um which is the the funding um through um city property taxes that goes towards Capital Asset Management program and um we heard from him kind of more related to parks and wreck projects that um for 2025 Hickory Park will be slated for sort of a redo um so we'll be you know providing updates you know throughout future months as that um Park re redo um comes into more fruition so and then also we heard from uh our city planner Ashley colie uh with an update regarding Meadow Park which is the park um we've been talking about the last couple of months um that's adjacent to the public safety campus um site and so just kind of to recap that um you know we're underway with that planning process we've had a couple of steering committee meetings with the um city project team team a few of the residents that have expressed interest in participating in the planning process along with our consultant um H KGI and uh sort of our next step that we're working on is developing um an online survey that will um be targeted to go out to um the residents in that area in which that Park will serve and the intent of that survey is to get a you know a sense of What the residents are looking for and then we'll use that information to start to inform um some Concepts and then we bring that forward again and get some feedback narrow it down to a you know a preferred plan at that point we'd bring that back to the park and wck commission um to get your recommendation um the city council for approval so that plan's coming along um with still the goal of of um building that um Park sometime yet this fall and that's obviously weather permitting um but that's that's the goal right now um Marshall with Meadow Park will will the just thought now will that name roll through or will there be a name change associated with the new park and the project um as of today we'll we'll continue with that name yep yep um we do have a a Parks naming policy you know so if a resident wanted to you know submit a request to change the name of it you know we would have to you know look at that and then go through a process and determine whether or not we we would do that okay is that a lengthy is that a lengthy process time consuming costly um just like shoot an email yeah I mean the process to like submit it isn't isn't all that much but I think from there we would have to have a discussion on does it warrant um a need to change it you know and if that's the direction we're going to go then I think it's making it more of a community process sure um so to allow everybody to participate versus just a single person bringing forward their their their idea you know and then yeah betting that so in other words I just shouldn't have brought it up yeah I'm glad you brought it up because I think it's a great idea I was just curious with the new building and the new you know what I mean I have like 12 ideas right now and I think it'd be a lot of fun read the policy because I think we have a lot of stipulations on what it can't be named my rule out your 12 ideas it's first time like a true vi just say first time I've been sassed by the Vice chair in 2025 thank you Vice chair all right and um so then moving on the next um Park update would be the future Southwest CH or yeah chasa Community Park master plan um so that we've had a recent um kickoff meeting kind of our official kickoff meeting um with our project um Team within the city um which um that consists of Ashley colie our city planner Aon link our Recreation program manager Nate cabitt our community development director Matt Clark our our city engineer um myself I covered everybody so that's the team kind of on the city Side um and then on that meeting was our consultant from Confluence Brad Aldrich who was going to be the Project Lead um and then we also had repres the representatives from stantech um that are going to be providing the engineering support uh throughout this this planning process so we had a really good kickoff meeting um it was a wayed to sort of establish um you know the general direction of the plan um the project timeline and then some of the things we're doing currently to establish what I would say is context um for the site and the process um so a lot of work is going in currently with um some of the previous engineering um evaluation and and work on that site to bring Confluence up to speed um so a lot of this data dumping there and um surveys and things like that which is allowing um Confluence to start to develop their base map and whatnot that we're going to be working from um so getting that engineering context established um we're also working with Pros Consulting um that's going to be doing a market analysis for us to help um generate some context um as we go out and do more Community engagement and so the the the thought there is to evaluate our existing Park system here in chasa and understand the various amenities throughout that system and um you know quantities and quality and in in addition to that start to understand um what are the parks and amenities with our neighboring communities knowing that that is still generally within the service area and then picking out a couple of maybe other similar sized um communities throughout the Metro is just another comparable um and matching that with national trends data as it relates to you know what we're seeing with various Sports Programming and other types of amenities that are you know what I would say is maybe being incorporated into Community siiz parks and seeing some success so that's going to give us a little bit of context um for us to respond to and account for as we go into the community engagement process um the other thing we're working on would be Confluence is starting to build out the project website um and they're going to be utilizing a platform called social pinpoint um for that project website which is going to allow us to have a lot of the content as we go out through the planning process for the residents to to see and access and then it's got a lot of um engagement tools within it as well so there'll be ability to put um the park map up there and people will be able to you know it's why they call it social pinpoint they'll be able to put pin pin drops on locations and add comments and ideas and things like that so um that'll be exciting um so that's kind of what's going on there and then you know I think there's going to be a lot of good context established um so that um next month what I'm planning for with um our meeting is a park and wck commission is for our meeting next month in February to be a work session um I think we're going to go ahead and just cancel the regular meeting so that we can take as much time as needed to meet with the consultant um and they can share with you um some of this context we're starting to establish and then get your thoughts on sort of the the plan that we're going to utilize for Community engagement so it's always it's just kind of the the organization and the buildup you know but um we've kind of had our kickoff meeting but then in February will really be your all's kickoff meeting um but you know getting some work done to bring some information to you to respond to and provide feedback um um and then we can kind of launch from there very cool any questions on on that so far maybe I am not remembering but have we nominated people from our commission to a task force for that yet where the task the task all of us okay so you're yeah so we're going to essentially utilize the entire park and wreck commission as the task force yeah yep something here and that's what I'm missing thank you a little different from how we approached the community center y yep got it oh the other thing I forgot to mention part of you know some of the things we're starting to work towards is Define who the focus groups are going to be in the community we'll sit down and have presentations with you know and and starting to get those scheduled out um those those can take a little bit of time to get the the right people at the table in the meeting um for those various focus group discussions but what was the I think we talked about this before but what was the primary reason for wanting to not replicate the same thing from the community center task force know I think the more I thought about it um I think we had great representation on the the community center task force to begin with but over time I think there was some Fallout um and it it you know all the voices weren't there and it's difficult to and as I was starting to think about who all might we want to have on that it was starting to get to be a rather large group of people and to find a day and time that works for that many people is just hard and so I really value you know your all's representation as not only as a park and recommission but as residents of the community and I think just building it into um you know the flow of the park and wreck commission meetings it makes sense um just from an efficiency standpoint and then really we can rely on you as um kind of the community Representatives but then also advocating for the community feedback you know and then helping to flesh out the information we get through that feedback to to understand what it's saying and how does that inform the design and then in the end ultimately we'll rely on you to provide the the final recommendation um to city council and it seems like there was a really great like deliberate process for the community center task force and a lot of excitement out of the gate people wanted to be involved and then it just seemed like even after a couple meetings there was a pretty noticeable drop off yeah yep and I think it was just yeah no matter what night we picked it just wasn't going to work for everybody tough but yeah kind of keep keep learning as we go through these we're a ways off um determining which focus groups to include but even two years ago residents that are across the road from the Future Park um had concerns but where is there going to be lighting and obviously we'll talk to those groups but I just want to throw that out here even this early that that I was getting questions about well where specifically is lighting going I'm like there will be a process and so that's a group on the fields on the fields the lighting sorry in the parking lot yeah well not the yes for the field thank you you can see inside my brain or exactly what I was talking about yeah so yeah I think part of that too will just you know not only the focus group discussions but I think you know I think that'll be a very engaged section of the community you know for them to know where that project website is and they can sort of keep up um with what the plans are along the way so yeah good you had all the signs up over there so yeah yeah yeah see a lot of fighting from all the local sports associations as well which will be interesting the Right Mix you will not be biased right no need more soccer fi second I heard we need more lacrosse Fields just kidding I don't know need a yeah Clover rge really nice soccer field but plan on it last year because it was too extra parking in a shuttle to get to the community center from what I've heard and a packo ball court to plan while you're waiting uh I'm excited has there been any new information from the school district or still crickets nope so that'll be that's going to be one of our first focus group discussions we're going to want to have right out the gate so want to sit down with them and yeah understand what their future plans are for that elementary site the next few months they're going to pretty much map out their financial plan for the next several years here so that'll probably inform whatever that is then too yeah yeah so yeah it'll be an exciting project you know I think it's a unique site um it's got some cool grade to work with you know there going be some storm water element to it that'll be you know fun to incorporate you know as an amenity obviously the the Big Woods to the South you know that um we continue to preserve and um work with the developer on that um the future Elementary School is part of it so it'll be fun that's one of those really cool projects that are going on you know that you know Community Center master plan that just big like Legacy projects for the community fun stuff and for us we better not mess it up yeah no pressure chair Vice chair co-chair yeah is that it for Park updates Marshall yep okay um then moves on to 8B Department happenings yeah so um some highlights um within the department last weekend was uh a pretty pretty hopping weekend for us we held our health and wellness Expo on Saturday at the community center and that was in partnership with um the Southwest Chamber of Commerce um um so it turned out to be a really great event um they their role in that um event was ultimately working with our local business community and inviting them in to be vendors and so they were set up in our upper gym they had about 36 um vendors in the upper gym and then um we as a park and wreck department had tables set up in our Atrium to really showcase all the different things available um in Parks and Recreation and there to answer questions um and then we treated it as like an open house event So within it the public was able to come in and use a facility for free and try it out um and we had um group fitness demonstrations occurring within the studios we had pickle ball um going on in the lower gym for people to try uh we had bounce house for kids to uh to play in and then we also created sort of a a scavenger hunt throughout the building which you know got people to walk through the building and see other components of it um namely the the lodge on the far end of the building along with getting people down to see the tracks and Trails um preschool areas on the lower level and um we had a lot of great participation and I would say um exposed people to new areas of the building they didn't know existed so it was a in my mind a very successful event um I had the opportunity to spend a good amount of time in the lodge and interet people as they coming down and they had never even been in the space before lived in the community for 10 years and so they uh it's fun to sort of see that their wheels spinning and how you know they could potentially um consider it as a rental space in the evenings or weekends or hey I'm going to tell my my older mom about this to come in and check out the programming uh that occurs during the week so so it's fun um really good program um and then right off the heels of that was the JV and varsity hockey chasa Chanhassen um so you can imagine the parking lot was was quite uh taxed at the community center on Saturday but that's good to see and then down at the curling and Event Center was the big Spiel um that actually kicked off Thursday night and went through the weekend um and that's a really unique um Bond Spiel uh there was uh 96 teams that participated and the way that works is it's in conjunction with um Four Seasons Curling Club up in BL Lane um Frogtown Curling Club and then St Paul Curling Club along with us and so the teams that register they're guaranteed to play a game at each of those facilities so they get to kind of experience them all which is kind of which is was really unique and um Chas is a really good host site for the one the teams for their game um and the winning team was from St Paul pardon my takeout 2.0 team name so are you provided any feedback from like the organization in general as far as you know the facility and things like that from the people who have who attended yeah so like that actual Bond Spiel um is organized through Twin Cities curling Association and I think they put out a survey after the fact to yeah get some input good yep yep um and then while while all that curling action was going on we had representation from chasa out in Colorado participating in the USA curling u8 national championships and uh super excited to share with you that team gensel um won the championship um so three of the um participants on that club chasa based um including one of them our city administrator Matt poosi his son bill is on that team um so it's really cool to see because um it took a while from when the facility opened to when we created like a junior um Curling Club you know it's only been really in existence I think for about the last five years and so will would have started you know back then and to see the the evolution of those kids now competing at a national level and winning is pretty awesome and um in addition to that team Johnson also for the girls won the National Championship u8 um they're a Minnesota based team out of Blaine um so Minnesota came through really well on the u8 and then team gensel also um competes for they're currently competing and buying for a spot on the u21 um National Championship so they've been participating in a variety of qualifying events they haven't quite won those to earn a spot but they're accumulating points throughout the series of those and then um I think what is next there's one more qualifying event coming up in early March I believe in Blaine so they have an opportunity if they win that to get in or get through with the points and then um that u21 National Championship is going to be held in Bowling Green um Ohio in April so we'll continue to root them on but you know super cool to see um our local kids you know competing and winning at that high of a level um coming up on Monday May 20th we got the Martin Luther King um celebration day and that we always have a program at the Event Center so check that out um there's a breakfast and then they bring in a guest speaker um that day um it's free and available for anybody to attend and that'll be 7:30 to 9:30 in the morning um with the colder ice our outdoor ice rinks are now open another thing that our Public public Crews uh put a lot of time and effort into um so Lions Park and Community Park outdoor rinks are open and then um firemen's um Park two the pond is Now Now open and available to skate on um they've been working on flooding that and making it nice and smooth cool it's on the trail um so so it's looking like the um traditional um chasa firefighters fishing contest might actually be a goal this year um so that's good to see let's see a couple more things we've got the uh new Junior pickle ball class up and running um we got 12 kids enrolled in that um which is great to see that's up from two um kids enrolled from when we pre previously offered it and then in general I would to say a lot of our winter programming is you know up and running so Community Center and curling and Event Center during the winter months are really their their Prime months where we're seeing a lot of activity and that's it okay other business 9A all right and that brings us to the round [Music] table kin you to start on your own this time uh I don't really have anything this month um yeah so I had a meeting last week um with Mary and Aron um for the Nick Mason scholarship fun uh so it's great to kind of have the year wrapup of the impacts and you know how that scholarship fund has given opportunities for people to you know use get memberships to our community center or do events um May maybe we can suggest to either get a copy of the deck or have Aaron come and do a quick overview of that because I think it would be great for this group to kind of hear some of those I didn't I didn't jop down any of those numbers and bring them with me tonight but um really good impact to the community um so great to be part of that um as a committee we're going to be looking for ways to increase funds in there so when we try and get some of those ideas I think bring them back to the group here as well but um yeah kind of kind of cool to be a part of that and see how it's make an impact to you know people in our community so it's awesome um I'm excited about the ice ranks being operational now Chas I know the last couple years they've struggled having ice just due to the warmer Winters one thing I'm not aware of are you able to rent ice skates at those like firemen that larger outdoor ones or is it just bring your own equipment it's all bring your own yep we have lights in any of them yes it was just under the lights at um Clover Ridge or community park last weekend yeah 8:00 do they all close down at 8 you know yeah The Rinks all eight okay there there's lights at lions lions as well Li ring yep right there lights well I suppose that's fairly well lit with the bridge but not like normal like yeah hockey you kind of get that ambient light off of the stage and the bridge but depending on the cloudiness do those guys come in like at 4 in the morning to flood the Rings yeah seriously you guys know they're coming in really early to do that super early that's awesome I was uh I I don't I don't think uh it' come as a shock to anybody would a huge fan of the community center I am but I didn't spend a lot of time with the community center last year just because of my girls are getting older and activities schedules and whatnot and been going there quite a bit now in the last few weeks and it literally it had been months since I'd been there just going to come out and say it but uh I noticed some really positive changes around there like the signage yeah that's a really nice touch and some of the pictures on the walls like I think one of the pictures was from Fire and Ice from one of the bands playing this last summer yeah you know just little little touches like that was really great to see um staff just I don't know what it is there's like an air of professionalism about the staff now not that the staff wasn't professional before but there's something about it like you know the the level of professionalism by the staff like just the way that they dress we in lanyards things like that it just feels like a little bit more like we've raised the level of what's going on at the community center and yeah it just all it took was not going there for a few months and I was like oh nice yeah yeah and I would attribute that to Jill Johnson our new community center manager she's come in and really made some yeah great imp and changes that you know it's great to see that they're getting noticed so yeah and I nice to see his staff there that I am familiar with the new staff as well and I there somebody I saw there today and I'm like she looks really familiar to me and I waved at her I'm like hey you know if F realized when I left where I recognize her from she she either still does or used to work at the Target here in Chas and I'd see her at Target all the time but now she works at the frontes at the community center so recruiting well so um just a i was there on Saturday I saw you guys out there man the place was just jamming holy cow I pulled up and I'm like man I parked across the street at the middle school at Middle School East man what's going on hockey and I I come in and here's Marshall and everybody and you know putting on a good show so that was really great to see um I love that have batting cages available at the community center um love it if we could make it a little bit more uh well two things about the batting cage is just some feedback I don't know who to share that with but I think there are Maybe some uh the electrical on the uh actual you know the the pitching machine probably needs to be fixed I don't know who to address that to so um maybe I can talk with you about that afterwards but yeah I love that we have it available but um it's you know it's just it's a a process of you have to go online and make a reservation and then I have to like call I'm like you know I not sure I actually have this reserved and then the stuff online didn't match what they had at at the front desk and that was just a process but I think it'd be great if we could get that maybe a little bit easier to do yeah and I don't know if you guys have been booking the batting cages quite a bit I mean the they're open there it seems like there's maybe two or three time time slots just over the weekend I think Wednesday night that's kind of one of those amenities we just we kind of wonder about yeah whether or not it's worth investing more into or not so yeah I don't know how much it gets used I I love our gym usage you know when you bring them down and so that's why we got to really come up with specific times and reserve it and and things of that nature but there there's signage around the community center saying hey batting cage is now open you know so it feels like and I know the hours are different this year than they were last year because they didn't used to do Wednesdays last year you think it just used to be Saturdays and Sundays last year but um yeah I did open skate again with my one of my daughters the weekend before last it was great it's fun seeing a lot of people come out for that and really cool but yeah awesome good stuff I was also going to give the community center activity some love like skating and um swimming but you know that kind of covered it all grateful that it's open in the winter instead I will talk about our um trail system again we are just so so lucky that um trucks came through and plowed a lot of the major um I guess arteries if you will not even ones that go to Parks like the Ravine Trail and such was was um clean to run and walk on and I mean I saw a Fisher get a uh rabbit I Saw an Eagle saw um the Beaver Dam I mean it's just the amount of Nature and and that we have out here is awesome and those trails that they are somewhat accessible and I know that's not true for everybody in our city but they are still largely um accessible to many residents and that's just fabulous that's all I have I don't have anything yeah I don't have anything either for me at all this week either um anybody else anything pop up as conversation has had no okay then that brings us to Mary do you have anything okay all right yes and that brings us to item 10 to adjourn do I have a motion to adjourn I'll motion to sirc second second weinan all in favor say I I opposed we are jerk
