##VIDEO ID:ObayYU6mPb4## e all right I will call this meeting of the environmental Commission of Cranberry Township to order and we begin with the pledge allegiance I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible liberty and justice for all right and I will read the statement of adequate notice pursuant to the open public meetings act notice of this meeting was sent to the cranber press the Trenton Times and home new News Tribune on January 5th 2024 posted on the bulletin board posted on the Township's website and sent to those who requested a copy of this notice all right we will do the roll call and remember you have to turn your mic on or you won't be recorded for posterity John reinfelder here Josh cohut here Gabe Letterman here Becky Mathers is not here Jason is excused Teresa Dela George here Stephen hellsten here all right and barbaret Rogers is here all right acent there okay very good so we need to review the minutes and having reviewed the minutes we take a minute or two let me know if you have any suggested changes otherwise I would entertain a motion after that review to accept the minutes I'll make that motion have a motion do we have a second I will second that all righty all those in favor of approving the minutes say I I anybody opposed any exstension seeing none okay so that moving us right along so we'll begin with reports so unfortunately uh Jason had a uh an unexpected event that he couldn't be here tonight so we'll have to hear from the planning board if there were issues uh next time there W there was a development Review Committee that I could not attend but at that meeting I could see that there were no real issues of concern to the environmental commission so I think we're okay there but we get a second chance because those things usually move to the uh planning board so if there's something Jason will bring it back to us all right uh we don't have the Parks and Recreation liaison so that brings us to the township committee do you want to go now or later or small thing and don't forget to hi yeah I don't really have uh much to report for the EC but um I do um I just uh I am the leant to Shay Tre and they are um moving forward in a lot of different areas in particular they're going to be working um with the school on um you know there's the climate um climate education piece to the school and um they're going to go and help and speak about trees and benefits of trees Etc and they also have um have been updating their no uh no plant uh list and the suggestions of trees to plant and um they're getting a they have money in their budget for a tree um my gosh the word is escaping me a tree person a tree expert um to help out with a thank you a tree arborous I'm very tired um um a tree arborous to help with u you know um looking at the trees around town and how best to help manage them and which ones to help take down and suggest um you know Etc so um they're really um very active and doing a lot of great work so I just wanted to share that with you since environmental commission shade Tre kind of all we all work together um and um I'm going to the municipal League conference tomorrow um which is in Atlantic City and are you going to be there at your table um and no um and uh going to sustainable Jersey lunch in and we get to meet a lot of uh great people and see what they're up to lately and um um I think um oh there was one thing sustainable Jersey that I think that it would be really great for us to it has to do with climate resiliency and I think in the next master plan which is down the line we are going to have have to have a section within the master plan about our resiliency uh climate resiliency and there is a technical assistance through sustainable Jersey that we could apply for um which would be really great to get ahead of some well are we ahead of it I don't know but anyway get ahead of how we would like to plan for our Township to be more resistant with climate change so I'll I'll forward that action item to you guys to see whether that's something the EC might be able to yeah I mean obviously I'll work with you guys absolutely yeah send that to us yeah because I find that the technical assistance things are really great um because they provide a nice plan on on ways to pick off small lwh hanging things that we can do um and then the bigger projects are the things that we get hung up with like uh you know I had I did a municipal energy audit um you know I did bike technical assistance and you know it really helps over years of ways forward for the township so I'll forward that to you and that that's a state document right or where is that from uh put that out I haven't read through the whole thing but it's usually through yeah something facilitate okay yeah send send that info send that info where I will send that info yeah like the the bike network was through the northern Jersey Transportation which is federal but then the county weighs in and does a lot buch of stuff so it's all together does that have to do with the community rating system is that what you're talking about yeah not for the for FEMA and the national flood insurance no okay yeah but that probably all of that stuff all that information would probably go into right you know last month I was at the New Jersey flood plane conference and there was a presentation about the community rating system about building resiliency um throughout the community and where communities can get certain points that they can accumulate so that residents can get discounts on their flug Insurance oh very cool yeah is that an action item you know is that through sustainable Jersey or that through something completely different uh we can talk about it later I I I'm not 100% certain but we can talk about it yeah yeah I mean this is obviously areas that we I think the EC could take a good lead off and and move this forward so great okay thank you just a real quick note I was at a sustainability Summit for high school students on campus two weeks ago and sustainable Jersey was there and was trying to get the students there to be motivated to do a project for it wasn't just sustainability it was another term I can't remember they had this National comp or Statewide competition and they highlighted Princeton High School so I thought that was pretty cool the one example they gave was Princeton High School's food waste project oh at the school so I thought that was pretty neat that's great yeah yeah I recognize some faces so oh um and on a side note this is something different that's really great I wonder if any cranberry kids are involved but it was school wi so I'm sure there are yeah yes my daughter's doing that in her environmental science class sophomore yes there you go wow that would be great to bring to the lower school somehow we've been thinking about that for a while um you know I think uh I don't know if you were the EC at the time but um our uh environmental resource inventory may be coming up that's a yeah a beast I think that's been 10 almost 10 years yeah we did an inventory when I was on I I mean those um who did it my God he retired yeah the former group yeah um but you know those are things that we usually we bring in a consultant that's what we did no well the next time round we actually had someone do it Johnson what's it oh Glenn no Glenn oh not Glenn um oh my gosh um anyway but last time but he's a professional that that was a professional yeah but you know what we did was we got a grant and someone from ruers he was really great helped redo it and put it online so I don't know if we have a lot to really update but um it's something that is going to have to be looked at because it's almost 10 years since it was done so um I just want to put that on a maybe to-do list yeah um so yeah thank you that's it alrighty all right looking at Old business is there any update on the catch basent adop the catch Bas initiative no as I mentioned last month there are some other programs that are out there so I'm still Gathering some information to come back to present to you guys so that we don't have to drag it out for as long as yeah I don't want to just fill up time so when I have something actually of makes sense substance to bring to the group then that's what I will do but all right um hopefully next month I should have something sounds good you know it there isn't there is a line in the budget that could be used for this that's all you know right so we can shift it around if there's something the other the other thing that I do want to add is I did talked to some people about getting corporate sponsorship for it and I didn't get any push back so there might be the opportunity to get it funded externally by corporate sponsors great that would be good uh all right any updates on the uh Community wildlife habitat uh nothing substantial I posted information on leave the leaves on our web page on Facebook and in certain Community forums and actually saw a slight uptick in people following the page and giving a little thumbs up um so yeah really a small little bump right I think it's on people's radar but um nothing super substantial kind of moving us forward um and then I would say for the Outdoor Classroom I'm currently in like Grant hunting mode um there are a few that are sort of coming online for applications like between now and like February that I'll be applying for um yeah and just is still kind of like knocking on people's doors for money for that so we'll see how it goes all right best of luck and keep us posted all right uh you covered three in one that was great boom boom boom so preserve management and Trail maintenance uh I will say that there were two activities one of them Del and I led a group of Scouts from from the I want to get this right it's the Plainsboro cranberry scouting group I I'm not sure how they officially call themselves tro troop 2024 that's all I know tro 2024 I don't know what the name is scouting America maybe but there were about seven kids roughly and so that was good so we took them to the cranber Brook Trail the eagle Trail along the water mainly and somebody had gone through so it wasn't that bad actually but um they all had Clippers and gloves and I had extra Clippers and gloves and a saw and there was one place where we did have to saw a small downed tree so that was good they got there scouting you know got hot and sweaty and stuff so that was that was fun uh and then we just circled around and the rest of the trail look looks fine uh on a second note I went to the the unami woods and I think it was yesterday yeah I think it was oh my god um so much happens on Monday you just forget but I went on I went yesterday and um just to walk it because I had heard that there you know had been overgrown a little bit but it didn't really look too bad but that is a place especially closest to Cranberry Brook you know it's kind of a loop that trail is a loop uh it could use a little bit of cutting back for the winter so that when the spring comes it won't just instantly close in so if the scouts are available I might reach out to them for a second go round in the unami woods but otherwise unami looked good except that the leaves have fallen and so the the trails are all covered with leaves but it looks it looks pretty nice um like there was one other thing with are there any updates on Pin Oak Trail because that's the one that had the most trees right so I did see that there were trees had been cut on in unami and so I haven't gotten to the place where the trees were supposed to be cut in pin OES but has anyone been there so that's my next that's next on my list I'm kind of going around I live across the street from it so I always walk my dog there and she has fun jumping over the oh still not but they're all still there okay so that one has to be reminded and in like the wooded part um so we always start kind of like what I call the orchard but it's not an orchard it's just where like the pin oaks are planted and then we kind of go down then to like the Shaded tree part through the back and then come out the official entrance um and it's that part that had like a series of like three that had fallen AC right across the path they mowed it recently yeah yeah yeah but not the the big trees in the back all right so I'll go to that I did get to the Reinhardt property because I wanted to get back to that place in the beginning if you remember it was it was essentially you know a Thicket of jungle you couldn't walk through and so I did spend some time getting that part back it's mostly the road es and the the Winterberry and the things like the thorny stuff um and I did get that pushed back in that green BR in that first area of the yellow Trail as you go to the left um the rest of it as as I recall wasn't so bad so that was really that first part it's the wet part and it's the just because and the poison ivy and the poison ivy now someone had take removed the poison ivy from there was poison ivy right at the entrance growing up the tree and somebody took it away I don't know who did that so that was nice I didn't have to deal with that I was prepared to face the ivy um but I'm glad I didn't have to so okay so I will at at un at um at Reinhardt the sign looked okay to me the big sign big wooden sign it fell down I thought the sign was there but then you know you go to someplace and you don't notice it cuz I saw the bike rack yeah all right the sign was where the bike rack um speaking of signage um do I have to like take a picture and like present like where we plan to screw in the certification of those preserves or can I just kind of willy-nilly just like put it wherever Common Sense deems best hopefully not willy-nilly no I think you can use your good judgment okay if you want to Bounce It Off somebody oh yeah just deliver it to them and have them put it up well but these are not you're talking about the ones you screw onto to something right yeah yeah yeah so I like I don't have like you don't have to put a post in I don't know it's just I just have like the metal PL no Fasteners oh if you want help with that either myself or DPW can Fasteners as similar to that it's going to say the nwf community habitat like this is a preserved space so yeah I mean we could let me know how you want to go I mean I think the one at cranberry Brook preserve could be is very straightforward put it right on the existing post um the others that have big signs unami Woods has another big post you you just need Fasteners yeah now Reinhardt allegedly had a big sign too I I'm shocked if it's gone but yeah and then for a cranberry Brook preserve would it be okay to put it near the new outdoor kiosk that's on Main Street yeah I would just put it on one of the verticals okay so WR on one of the things yeah but you real I mean take a look at that it's going to be like here's the the picture frame and then be just below okay so from like the there's two holes in the top so kind just like along the bottom like horizontally yeah because the glass needs to be to be able to open so as long as the glass can still open so you can switch the things that are in it I don't think it'll be a problem okay yeah I would I wouldn't put it on the frame I would put it on the the ver the posts that are holding if I remember correctly there's two yes yes so you'd put it on the out to not along the bottom well I would pick left or right and put it below the frame Bel that's my recommendation okay but if you want we can take a look at it you know okay all right thank you you're welcome all right so I will yeah I'll take a look at Pin Oaks and trees and uh that was all the old business that we had uh could remember but I think that covers most of our items so we will move on to new business which is the monarch station and so I invite Kelly and Jane up you can you can sit right here at this table and I have your do you want me to show the slides because I have the slides okay so that's and and so you when you sit here you have to press a button so that you can be heard there you go and recorded oh it didn't stick okay yeah there you go all right so the floor is yours so that up there is a picture of the layout but we also have it here so I'm just GNA put it in front this is like yeah you can set it right in front of the table okay the draft okay oh that's good yeah oh you can see okay thank you yeah so each of the slides is basically um one sheet of paper and we're on that and we're g to go over like you know what's on yeah what's on all right yeah you want me to go forward so at the top we don't have it printed out but that is going to be like the title yeah so on the second piece of paper it's going to display why our project is important and would you like me to read it or are you okay with reading it from up there I think okay yeah um so butterflies are in danger due to loss of habitat butterflies lay their eggs on milkweed during migration unfortunately milk gets killed due to herbicides this this Monarch Way Station gives the monarchs and other butterflies a place to reproduce and rest on their migration Journey throughout the year using native nectar plants and milk weeds so that's just going over like you know a rough chap of like why we there is a garden there um and what it is and what we have planted there so yeah should I go forward yeah so these are some of the plants you can find they're all um Native or um you know milk weeds so those ones are all nectar plants and on the next slide I believe we have the milk weeds yeah um okay and then we have like a little paragraph about like why it's important to have native plants so these plants are all native to New Jersey which is beneficial uh because they are used to wait yeah because they are used to the environment and can survive without harming other organisms they also protect the soil from erosion and provide a home for native animals all right I have a question is that the obedient plant I wonder why I got that name any ideas not really H well behaved plant I don't know I think so yeah we when we got the plant from Ruckers we had asked for only natives and that was one of the ones they had sent us so I would hope it was a [Music] native East Coast there oh maybe that plant was [Music] there some of these some of these we got donated and then like I think there's like that one that came from it was already there that makes more sense yeah but it's still growing so yeah it's fine and then okay swamp milk weed okay great so yeah on the next slide we have acknowledgements so people that helped us or the prior cranberry Scouts that had originally set this up we also have solar landscaping they donated a lot of the funds for this um the cranber environmental commission so thank you guys cranbery Town Council and the Ruckers Cooperative Extension of middlex County for donating the plants right so uh this is just like how you can help so it goes over like over the paragraph you can help the monarchs by planting nectar plants oh I think we meant to say native plant whoops wait oh yeah native plants or milked in your own backyard you can also spread awareness by educating your community about this issue and then we uh put that for them to like type into their phone and I did notice and I see that here you have a QR code which is a good idea for this one right we had actually we had tried that originally and then oh we fig oh we did figure it out sorry we did figure it out okay yeah yeah it's to that just to that website yeah it's just night CU people are so used to like nowadays all right and then this is sort of little yeah there like the point out where these are up on the slide it looks kind of weirdly set up but that's just so that we can cut them without cutting into each other so these are the the statement like right in the middle below the below the picture of the butterfly right oh it's all okay yeah oh okay I see so these are fun facts yeah these are just kind of fun facts about I think specifically monar yeah so during migration mons travel up to 2,800 miles so it's not really like to do with like the way station but it's just like about monarchs and like their migration and stuff I did notice this one is really interesting yeah helps them find the Monarch now and then the the cardiac glycosides wow yeah don't eat monarchs wasn't planning on it but thank you watch it be careful all right so those are more information and then artwork so this is actually a painting or what is this it's a marker drawing though it's a marker drawing it's amazing thank you wow so that will also be that'll be like in the middle in the middle yeah drawing everybody in because they see that beautiful we're gonna like take it off there put you use the actual original yeah yeah good idea fantastic and I think that's all S I think that's it all right yeah so I know you've been talking about this earlier but do you have any recommendations of where we should put this oh we also have certificate oh wow so where did you get that the website awesome small for oh for a small Fe I uh that's wonderful so now I want to ask and I should have paid more attention when we were out there what kind of condition is that kiosk in it's in pretty good shape oh we like we took that scary we took down like I'm the like old like plastic and there was a plastic covering that kind of yeah there was see a bunch of ants on it and um two mice two mice there were two mice in there two mice in there living yeah yeah they ran off um and so we like it's a habitat yeah we like left and the Ants were exposed so they like went away ants go yeah and then we like scraped off their like we scraped off their um tunnels yeah yeah they they make all kinds of we painted like over it with special type thing it was like outdoor yeah to there was like it kind of smelled so we sealed in like the smell and then we had like we have the new like we put in the new display case yeah display case okay display wonderful it looks better but it's just it doesn't have any information in it doesn't it's empty right now and so but the post seemed good asking dad so yeah soos by my son e Scout terrific and the roof was just redone by my and um they put in this beautiful new display case awesome and um I do have a question once they're done okay okay but that's Theos so in terms of the sign I don't I mean again this is my recommendation I think it would work for this kind of a sign below your display case what is this made of is this metal yeah it's metal okay so again we just need and just has two Fasteners on top oh four oh two in the top two in the bottom okay I got it yeah exactly right there exactly one of the posts so you're just going to need wood screws of some kind thumbs up from Dad all right and we can accommodate that I don't know if this is B but it says it's Monarch station number 49433 so now that's be okay so we got that you know with the plaque oh yeah and then I think we have one more question there's like two keys with it and so like when we're done like putting information in it do we give the keys to you and the town Tech we give them to the township they'll be kept in the main office they don't trust me with the keys it's a good thing but um yes we can get them whenever we need them you know if we have to like replace something it's the same with the the other kiosk on Main Street but yeah once you're once you're done you know making all of your displays then let somebody know here in the in the office you could probably just walk in you know after school or something and say I have the keys for the key because they have a a special um it's actually a box I believe they keep all those special keys in okay because I have to like sign it out I have the key you know it's very formal but once you're done once you're done keep them for now um great I can't wait to see it so what's the timeline put stuff up we should be done pretty soon yeah we're just gonna yes and I had a comment on one just one part of the text so far I don't know if that if you're still tweaking the the wording it all seems very good there was the one thing about the native here um so I just was thinking maybe we could think of a way to say um which is beneficial because rather than they're used to the environment we could say they're adapted to the environment something like that a little bit more biological used to is a little um what's the word I'm looking for it's a little non-descriptive it's it's not specific I mean it's kind of a general thing that we would say kind of casually it's a little casual that's what we would say um so maybe think about that one just think about that one something like adapted I don't know any other ideas on that but that was the one thing that just otherwise I did read through this before and seeing it now it seems okay um evolve to thrive in the environment something like that just to kind of hint like you're saying at how they've like developed over time to be like their best self in this space yeah they're resilient yeah that's a good word well but resilient could be in the face of you know the invasives are also resilient it's really we're we're we're trying how do we distinguish native from non-native native We Believe were here you know for a very very very long time now we have invasive plants that have been here for 200 years but that's not what we're we're talking about these are we believe these are truly native plants I think the distinction is that the the the plants and the animals like evolved together right so that connection of that the plant and the Monarch like but it's not only that because it's the soil microbes yeah it's the soil itself so it's it's quite complicated um I don't want to have it give a dissertation here I don't you know you have small space but think about something there maybe maybe adapted yeah or um a long history but you know I don't want to get too wordy on it I like it being compact I think what you did here is is good in that it's pretty compact so maybe just insert one word or two there if you can yeah that's my only suggestion thank you thank you anybody else I have one quick idea and maybe there's not enough space for it but were you mentioned the 2800 miles some people don't know what that is like how far that actually is so could you say like during migration monx travel from here to here mexic even if it's right yeah you could say even that like Mexico to Canada and then in parentheses put 2,800 miles okay just so people can kind of because people might be more familiar with Mexico to Canada than 2800 miles yeah because it's pretty awesome how far they travel and that'll be like whoa I didn't know that and putting that something more familiar might help yeah and it's not too many more words it's awesome that you don't have a lot of words I spend a lifetime with my students getting them to use less words yeah really no it does make that's a great thought thank you for mentioning that um yeah so people can visualize that because I know I have this thing on on my kitchen wall that shows the migration and it's it's like it's like three stages and it's complicated some go to California yeah and they may mix in Mexico but it's not clear it's very complicated but it's a long distance and to give people a frame of reference is a good idea yeah we we're try we were going to include something like about how the generation that like goes up or like part of the way up is not like it's like a few Generations apart from the one that comes down but it just got a bit too complicated yeah that that for further reading um yeah girls one more one more thought um and this is just maybe to add one more QR code or maybe another link um to make this kiosk like living and so that it's like something that people can continue to interact with um I have some links for you uh for like monarch lesson plans or like worksheets that if someone let's say with a group of younger girl scouts or a summer R camp like goes on a walk by this kiosk if they were to go to that link they would have um like additional resources to like engage with the space um and it can be like a continual kind of like teaching tool and of more like just like the static symbol so that's just one more if we can squeeze one more little cube in there we could actually add in a few more activities yeah okay cool thank you it looks good and I is this a one of the larv in this photo on the lower left what is that photo that's c yeah [Music] oh okay have you guys seen the Monarch lari the the uh they're they're they're the incredible black and yellow big caterpillars they're caterpillars might I don't know if you have room they're incredible to see I mean uh I had a few a couple years ago in my backyard I haven't seen them recently but they're really inedible yeah maybe if you if you had a picked a place but I leave it to you to decide but that's that's a great note to kind of see the different life stages the life those are the ones they so striking they're so striking and they have to survive on that milked plant they're the ones who eat the leaves of the milked maybe over there yeah this here's a here's a caterpillar living on a milked okay perfect sorry Everyone's an editor right well that's the thing that's the thing now Barbara had something yeah you guys this is really great I love all the information I was part of the beginning of this and this kind of seems to morph to just become a monarch Way Station prior to us talking um it was going to be included because that kiosk kind of told about a lot of different habits T like especially the grasslands that's just to the left of it and I hate to see any information on the grasslands be lost so I'm wondering if we could have like a little I I don't know if it's going to get too Mucky muck but I really think that that's really important that there's grasslands there's the Monarch Way Station and then there's also this little solitary be thing there too so I don't know what you're going to do with that because now we have solitary B home there um so that's what the intention was and and now it's become this and I don't you know maybe we could still have that grassland information somehow in there um because I you'd hate to lose that because it's right there in your face so yeah and and those two things you mentioned were the prior Scouts their projects right yeah we definitely wouldn't want to erase that Sil award information too got it yeah um and so the bee habitat the solitary bees yeah uh well this little home yeah it's a little home I mean what that was put up a couple years ago I don't know about four five years ago no no no more seven years ago oh she's now in college so okay so the question is yeah do you guys have the content or was it was was it legible I think we could work together like probably some of that yeah I mean a note about the grasslands I mean there is still a sign from the USDA Soil Conservation yeah uh separately they have a separate sign but um maybe a small blurb on that but because the blurb is really small like it's like yeah what did it say it's in there a grassland there could also be the magic of the QR codes right to so many people interact in that way to have a site set up with that content with just a little bit of information on the kiosk and then a QR code where people could look at it on their phone right because that information has already been approved so it's not like you have to come back and say Hey you know it's just how do you organize it on the kiosk would be more important than anything and I think they could do a good job with that without coming back okay and there B there was B I think there was a little information about solitary okay I think that's still is it still there no inform I don't know that there was a sign about the information but I know the thing itself is still there yeah like I thought I think it's in there if not I can get the information yeah I mean I would just say you know within the narrative I mean you have this Narrative of for the monarchs and we don't want to disturb that but if you could make something short and Punchy and maybe with a a locator to a website that might be the way to go learn more here grasslands to the left be habitat above more information and and the QR code can just be something as simple as like a one-page PDF with just just information and and real simple you don't lose the information that's there you have a little blurb QR code goes to a full page with all the information you want yeah I mean and I and the information has already been approved it's already been in the kiosk all you need to do is just find a way to just organize learn more about the grasslands to your left there Q code there you go right that then goes to that content yeah and learn more about this solitary B thing yeah you can make it short right you can just say learn more about the grass lands because remember that that are to the is this is this is this the approximate space you have this yeah basically I don't I don't have a photograph of the old material the problem was when we took it off I'm aware someone thought it was aand start that um yeah that came in from the DC when we took it off out um the backer board and everything just got disintegrated with yeah unbelievable far as size and scale goes I only have a reference to my dog from about here to here it's about that tall and about probably that it's pretty size size plenty there's plenty of room yeah I think there's room because this these the native plants you're going to lose some white space on the native plants six Kelly are you Kelly okay point6 Kelly's high [Laughter] and we had in MIT we had the Smoot Smoot was I remember the Smoot was like 5 foot4 or something remember this smoth they measured the bridge they measured the bridge Cambridge and how many smoo yeah maybe on the bottom because you're going to lose the white space there references to the other thing the key is finding you know the content and like you said I think yeah and like you said just make it a PDF that's posted on the on the EC website or the township website and just have a QR code that links to okay content doesn't have to be in the kios so you can have the space for your display but have a spot for people to learn for the pointer we need a pointer yeah like right at the bottom like grasslands this way beehive this way QR code QR code done yeah it'll actually probably get more clicks because you don't have more information on there people are going to be like QR code let me check this out right very good thank you so much and what's the a timeline for you guys did I ask you that
