October 28th 2024 regular meeting agenda as presented second moveed by trusty lions seconded by trustee Ferris Highland all in favor please say I I any opposition motion carries unanimously let's move on to the next item approval of minutes move the Board of Education approve the following minutes as presented 1 September 23rd 2024 regular meeting 2 September 24th 2024 special meeting 3 September 24th 2024 close session and for October 18th 2024 special meeting meeting second moved by trusty lion seconded by trusty Chambers all in favor of the motion as presented please say I I I any opposition motion carries unanimously uh the next item on our agenda is recognition so miss Ferris highum yeah I have a couple um recognizing two of our amazing teachers Michaela Norman a teacher at Donley was nominated for the Excellence and education through Michigan Lottery and she was chosen as a weekly winner and also congrats to Patty sanua of the high school who won a one class at a time a award from guau or Orthodontics awesome and that's yeah very cool uh do any other board members wish to offer recognition all right so move on to miss alfredson hi uh hello Holland and I were both gone last week so we had powder or two weeks ago CU we had Powderpuff but we're back or I'm back um tomorrow volleyball has our senior night which is exciting last home game and then we go straight into districts next week which we're supposed to win first round so hopefully we keep moving on Long season so we're almost done um football also starts districts on Friday so I think they play Milford uh our girl swim went seven and0 this season so we're um like conference Champs which is super cool so congrats to Holland and all of them uh our boys tennis team got third at our regionals and uh they play got 10 points at states which is pretty pretty good um East Lancing Marching Band plays at Ford Field this weekend which is super cool so bright and early I think they have to get here at 4 a.m. so that's I yeah I feel bad for my sister and uh model un had their first conference this past weekend that was hosted here so that's exciting new faces got to join so super fun and yeah that's it great thank you all right thank you Miss alfredson the next item on the agenda is the superintendent's report so I'll turn it over to superintendent Leo thanks we are uh we're doing quite well this year and not overlapping our uh reports okay so I'm going to start with no school for students this Friday November 1st due to staff professional learning um this will be the second of our five professional learning Fridays for elps staff uh students do not have classes on these days and then I've listed the other three days the next one is not until February um and these notes again will be easted to families tomorrow so they'll have a reminder again um October is National principal month so please join me in recognizing and celebrating our outstanding School leaders for the last few days of the month um also really good news our school health clinic is back on uh while the partnership with inam County Health Department to open a school-based health clinic did not come to fruition we are fortunate to have U ofm Sparrow step up to be our new partners in this endeavor we are in initial stages of planning and are very tentatively planning to be open in Late July of 2025 Eaton Risa the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and U ofm Sparrow have all partnered with us to ensure that this clinic will be available for our students and for community members ages 5 through 21 and the health clinic advisory committee um that's been established gosh for probably the last 16 to 18 months um under um a facilitator hired by the health department who is of course no longer with us because they're not our partners in this anymore uh she was uh done with her contract at the end of September so for right now I'm going to facilitate um and work with this committee until we get the rest of our partners kind of on board and a plan moving forward then we'll partner with a few of our other folks to do that um but we are going to meet uh Wednesday November 20th at 6m in the elhs hub if you enter through door one while there's been a pretty uh consistent group of folks coming to that advisory committee meeting it's open to all and we'll take new members so um again this will go out so all of our families will know and we'll get it on our um social media as well so just starting to plan um that space again it'll look a little different than the Health Department's model but still it'll actually look very similar to the model they're utilizing in Grand Ledge and I had a chance to go out and visit that one and talk to their superintendent their pa and some folks so um really excited to also um open and hopefully Late July when a lot of our students need fall physicals so that's really the Target that we're aiming for because I know Grand Ledge experienced a influx in um folks utilizing the um clinic in Late July to get ready for fall Athletics so we want to open at that point in time so um more more coming up but we I just emailed the members of that advisory committee to notify them of this meeting just today um I want to talk a little bit about our professional learning days just to keep folks in the loop about what these Fridays entail when their students are off the format of these days is a conference style morning where all District staff select a session of their choice some get their second or third choices um to attend with a built-in Wellness break on occasion specific groups may be assigned to a session but we do our best to limit those required sessions to one to two out of the five of them uh on October 11th we offered 19 different sessions that align with our mission statement and goal buckets of work so under our nurturing each child the student staff mental health and wellness social emotional learning just a sampling of the sessions we offered were mental health process and connection with Community Resources beyond the username social media and youth mental health secondary traumatic stress vicarious trauma and burnout and AED CPR training um under our educating all students teaching and learning bucket uh sessions incl included canva for educators there are uh multiple math sessions one for math essential practices and one for targeted math instruction with small groups and another one on mastering mipsy which is our newish a year ago special education platform and some of the sessions under our building World citizens our diversity Equity inclusion social justice and belonging um category some of the sessions were restorative mindset Beyond anti-bullying cultivating compassionate class class rooms we held a student L session calling out microaggressions calling in community uh a session called empowering students behavior support and Independence strategies for par Educators and our director director of equity and social justice is going to be rotating with each of the um levels for a morning session on getting to know the E the tool we utilize to both assess and give direction and strategies for um creating Equitable outcomes in multiple different areas and opportunities for our kids so the first round the high school instructional staff attended this next one the middle school will and then the three in February March and April two of our elementary buildings will attend that for each of those days and this Friday we have 20 more great sessions coming up so super excited about that in the afternoon they go back to their buildings and participate in self- selected work groups so they're kind of all doing school Improvement um PBIS um School climate and culture um family community engagement type groups um that have been identified at building levels and are uh different at different levels and self- selected by the teams little construction update we've been meeting uh close to weekly to begin planning for our new Central administration building and the addition of a secure entrance a front-facing Administration space and new cafeteria space here at the high school and I will provide a full will provide full presentation and share renderings at the November 11th meeting which is our next meeting here at 7 p.m. um in this space two weeks from tonight so thank you well that's very exciting lots of good stuff going on yeah very excited are there any questions or comments for our superintendent no question but uh so excited that the clinic is g to continue on and we have that partnership yeah it's um we have another meeting coming up but uh yeah uh juam Sparrow has done this kind of outside of the area so they have experience with it um and came forward wanted to step in didn't want to see this um fail or fall apart and I will also um acknowledge the in County Health Department while they had to bail um I did um meet at at their request Dr shinka Who Um uh replaced Linda veale as their um uh medical officer there she reached out and met met with me last week just to ensure that there was a smooth handoff and that it was going to happen and you know wanted to make sure yeah that uh it was still going to move forward and that uh anything they could do to kind of help that transition um she expressed their willingness to still do that and be part of it um until we kind of get our footings uh for it so I'm thankful that they um were still really interested in making it happen because they see the need in our community yeah it was a really tough situation I know it wasn't anything that anybody wanted to have happen so it seems like a really great outcome given the circumstances so I'm really happy I'm especially pleased too for the um all the time and effort and input that the community advisory committee members put in for those you know nearly a year and a half so to be able to bring them back together and see their um work and their input payoff too will be really exciting yay the partner at BR they're not a partner I mean you mean they do their independently you mentioned no they did it with u ofm Sparrow okay that's how yeah so we're kind of modeling they're modeling it after theirs yes same um same whole group DHHS is kind of they um monitor the grant the grant funds for it so the uh their construction funds for the project and then U ofm Sparrow will do the Staffing and then eat and Resa is also they've helped with project management there and we help with ours as well and the fiduciary for the grant and then they've also they did some partnering with the MSU K12 Outreach for some project management support too thank you you're welcome one thing that I'll I'll say which um didn't even occur to me when uh when we adjusted the schedule earlier this year is that I've gotten so much positive feedback on um moving the professional development day to Friday November 1st the day after Halloween both from teachers and from parents that are like grateful that we move that and um students some and then some anticipatory uh the same with the February 14th day so that you know those dates just the way they align this year really helped us out was nicely fell on Fridays yeah yes yes all right anything else all right well we can move on um the next item on the agenda is public comment and before we begin I'll read the statement that we customarily read at the beginning of public comment it says this is the opportunity to address the board uh speakers are to confine their remarks uh their remarks to five minutes if a speaker requires more than five minutes after all the persons who have requested to speak during this part of the meeting of spoken that speaker will be allowed additional time the superintendent or other District staff may comment to clear up or avoid significant misunderstandings and I have a blue sheet if you'd like to make comment just uh you can grab one of these blue sheets and fill it out um Mr Gorman's here on behalf of ela so hello everybody hello superintendent Leo Board of Education East laning family uh thank you all for your time if you don't know me I Ross Gorman I'm speaking to you today as the president of the ELA just to share some thoughts from our membership on events within the district I've been encouraged by a few board members to just do this from time to time and give a glimpse of what's occurring in the schools and I'll continue to deliver these remarks so that everybody's kind of informed um and this school year continues to be a breath of fresh air for a lot of teachers who've expressed to me that this is the first year in quite a few years that feels normal like whatever that might mean uh normal might not seem like a standing ovation but uh East Lancing teachers and staff are exceptional so I think that normal is a pretty good place if you're hearing it from one of our teachers right uh especially given you know stress and attrition that occurred during Co so uh one of the big chief contributors to feeling that normaly in the building or normality I suppose uh at least at the high school where I teach is the school safety teams that we've hired in the last year so I want to take just a second to speak uh about those individuals because they've already made positive relationship ship with the staff and the students in the building uh they greet me coming in every day they greet students and I think that's happening more than the kids greet me so like I'm happy to have that in the morning um during class time the Halls are empty and the students are in class which is good uh and I've not had a single student this year tell me that they feel unsafe using the bathroom these are all things that you know I've kind of kept mental tabs on and I'm very happy to hear uh most importantly I have only seen these new staff members our students with kindness and respect even while delivering discipline and administering that so to me that is incredibly important that the people doing that job also are people that you can approach uh this combined with support from our Dena students policies like cell phone banss numerous other initiatives that were talked about in this room in years past um I think that students again have the option to learn in class normally right and I think that's something that we should all be happy about uh I would be remiss if I did not speak about all of the hard work being done across the district to implement uh uniform tracking policies this year for all student accommodations to make sure that they are met uh this is a large undertaking with staff across all departments and all buildings contributing and while our teachers and counselors are nervous and apprehensive about the quantity of work that this will take I'm happy to report that they're doing great things uh through this process if you're not familiar we need to update all of our 504s and reevaluate those this entails meetings with students teachers parents by the counselors to ensure that accommodations are needed and helpful our new special ed director is personally overseeing these meetings and I've been present for some of them uh and I'm impressed by her thorough and methodical nature the counseling team and Dr Armstrong are crossing their tees and dotting their eyes in this process and making sure that it's done well uh teachers here at the high school have also stepped up to create digital tracking tools to log accommodations such that the bir on classroom instruction can be mitigated while ensuring all students are serving uh all of this is a heavy lift occurring at East Lancing but it's also happening across the state and in other districts um and it impacts students teachers parents administrators and we're really looking forward to getting the work done and ensuring that it's finished well uh all that said in the first few months of school we've had some fantastic professional development the superintendent Leo was just talking about I get to sit through some more of that on Friday and legitimately the feedback has been good uh these last two years especially that teachers have enjoyed it uh we've got great students we have amazing new facilities to work in uh and then the high school is getting its turn on that so that's good fun um and I think that we have the best teachers all right here in East Lancing and I think that that is normal for our district so thank you thank you Mr Gorman and it's so nice to hear the good things happening in our buildings especially coming from you but also please continue to reach out if there's things we can do to support you because that's uh that's why we're here so um is there any other public comment tonight I don't have any more forms all right so I think that we'll close the public comment portion of the meeting the next item on our agenda is board discussion is there anything that board members would like to uh discuss while we're together here all right well I think I'll take that as a sign that we should move on to the next item on the agenda uh the next time on the agenda is a motion to move into Clos session so can I get a motion I move the Board of Education meet in closed session pursuant to section 8h of the Michigan opens meeting act for discussion pertaining to the emergency operation plans second it's moved by trustee Ferris Highland seconded by trustee Holbrook a motion for close section should be a roll call vote so U Miss H will cre a roll call vote Mr Martin yes Dr Lions yes Dr edel yes Miss FIS Highland yes Dr Chambers yes Mr Holbrook yes all right so we will go into close session for a few minutes here um and we'll let everyone know when we're ready to to bring to bring you back in [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] he [Music] [Music] [Music] that will be coming soon sometime in November thank you trusty Lions facilities committee trusty affiris Highland we met September 27th and got updates on the tennis shed being up now which is awesome um there was a locker switch up at McDonald that's made a huge difference in the flow of kids going through the hallways um I've heard several people just say what a difference it's made and giving Billy and his team so much credit because he's made it happen um they put a lot of new infrastructure in at computer labs at McDonald as well um and all this maintenance has been completed um and then up on Tuesday oh and so obviously I think that the people in this room are pretty engaged but uh everything we can do to get people out to vote and to make their voice heard I think it's important I one thing that um that I didn't mention earlier but I think is worth a read is that our very own uh Mr ponton wrote a great piece for East Lancing info about efforts to register students specifically here at East Lansing High School to vote in selection because a lot of our students are eligible to vote and so if you haven't read that I would commend you to do that and if you know somebody who's 18 or will turn 18 before Tuesday let's get them registered here here are there any other announcements all right we're adjourned at 8:14 p.m. thank you all for being here thank you for
