trusty Ferris Island nothing submitted but I trust hen will have some good stuff so I bet she will I bet she will yes so let's bring her up Miss Walsh hello everyone so most fall Sports have ended but two teams are really going strong one of those being the football team which won their Regional final game against Dexter super exciting game the final score was 50 to 49 and they're going to play Sagen all Heritage at home this Friday um the girl swim team had their conference final this weekend that's why my voice sounds so horse I was I was screaming um they came in second making them conference Co Champions with okus this is the first time the team has ever been Conference champions in about 30 years so it's us congrats two divers qualified for regionals which will take place on Thursday and hockey season has kicked off so the East Side stars are going to play Chelsea at home on Wednesday the opening night of the play Peter and the SC star catcher is Thursday at 7 so there'll be shows all weekend after that and portrait released a new issue last week on Friday featuring topics such as athlete of the month and student perspectives on politics in the recent election that's all I have thank you guys so much great thank you there a lot all right the next item on the agenda is the superintendent report thank you um I want to start by we have a lot going on around the district this week um one of the big events we've been planning for for months maybe a little over a year um is the national Multicultural student achievement Network msand student conference this week that we are hosting here in East laning and we are excited to welcome over 200 of our msan students and chaperons to East Lancing this week the annual msan student conference will be held at the Kellogg Center and we'll kick off with a dinner and keynote from Little Miss Flint Mari copy a youth activist from Flint who is best known for raising awareness about the Flint Water Crisis the theme of this year's conference is leaving your legacy so our speakers and panelists align with this theme Friday's keynote since I typed this has changed so Friday's Keno is Miles Johnson who um Miss Burton just called me when I was running home and back and I believe he is a county commissioner um sounds right to me um um Senator Anthony had to cancel last minute Friday but we're hoping to have her she may she's working to see if she can be here for a part of Wednesday night's um opening so we hope so um our students will also have an opportunity to hear from a panel of local entrepreneurs as part of their MSU campus tour Thursday and all of these individuals will be coming in Wednesday and departing Saturday so that will be um a lot of busyness for us Wednesday through Saturday um kind of back and forth between here and Kellogg Center we also have our own chaperon and student group attending as well I want to share a little bit about our last professional learning session from November 1st our second of five professional learning Fridays was held November 1st we offered 20 sessions in addition to the multiple collaboration meetings that were held and just kind of a a sampling of some of our session titles under nurturing each child we had sessions that included the social discipline window understanding minority stress and mental health behavior Basics prevention before intervention and ending the silence for school staff with the National Alliance on Mental Health or mental illness um under our educating all student students bucket of teaching and learning some of our sessions included digital best practice for staff increasing student engagement Through Math Games two different book study groups one um on Dr goalie Muhammad's cultivating genius and one on Dr Julia B Lindsay's reading Above The Fray and another session called transition IEP is what you must know and under building World citizens some of our sessions included uh getting to know the ejat and this was with all Middle School instructional staff this round um in our October PD High School staff had it and then in the other three February March April we'll have two elementaries have it each of those times um understanding the identities and experiences of lgbtq plus students in Michigan building inclusive teacher websites and responding to push back with the Justice leaders collaborative and our next Friday PD day is February 14th 2025 uh just a reminder that our school-based health clinic Community advisory committee meeting will be next Wednesday November 20th from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the East Lancing High School Hub um anyone who's been part of it or would like to be part of it is welcome and just enter through door one and our next board meeting is Monday November 25th at 7 pm right here thank you any questions for the superintendent well it's very exciting to have the folks from inand here this week I know that you've done a lot of work on that Miss Burton has done way more I just want to give her credit I'll take a little bit of it but she's really done the Li and share along with some folks like trusty Chambers from MSU and some of her colleagues um it's taken a lot of folks to organize this but uh Miss Burton definitely has been the lead for us on it 100% mhm how many students do we have participating do you know um 10 land you know oh [Music] yeah9 yeah to 10 yeah yeah and they've been really involved in the planning of it as well um these students who are coming or are attending this year all got to go last year so they're rurys so they have the wisdom of you know what they experienced and like didn't like wanted to suggest changing you know from last year's conference so they've been really instrumental along with um Miss Sanchez and Mr Neil here at the high school their advisers who will also be there with them well thank you that's going to be very exciting and I can't wait to hear about how things go all right uh the next item on the agenda is public comment I know that we do have um at least one blue sheet I will read the statement before we begin um says this is the opportunity to address the board speakers are to confine their remarks to five minutes if a speaker requires more than five minutes after all other person after all persons who have requested to speak during this part of the meeting have spoken that speaker will be allowed additional time the Super intendent or staff make comment to clear up or avoid significant misunderstandings and with that we have Amy hook some hook uh come on up hi I'm Amy Holbrook a fourth grade teacher at White Hills Elementary and I'm also the co- Elementary vice president for the ELA um I'm coming representing the ELA today and uh we just wanted to bring forth three things to you um one is that um social emotional learning is happening at the um at the different levels um at the high school level the trail conversation about implementation is happening for trails and the um team is supportive of social emotional learning at the elementary level Second Step has been happening and we are um in the area of teaching the anti-bullying lessons um those are in progress at the middle school um some of our Middle scho School staff wanted to report that they um with the collaboration of the staff presence in the hallways and um in conjunction with the new sixth grade schedule that is happening to kind of separate some of the busyness in the Halls they've noticed that it has had a calming effect on the building and that it's made for smoother transition times and so we want wanted to share that out and that's really all that I have for today thank you thank you Miss H Brook do you have questions or concerns that I need to um if there are questions I I we can certainly ask but typically during public comment we just let let you comment and then we know thank you that's better for me well and um and as I always like to say it means so much that we have our partners at the ELA come to these meetings tell us what's going on because we're not there every day and you are and so thank you for being here um it is educational for us and um it reminds us of the important work that you're doing every day for the people who are counting on you the children thank you all right with that uh is there any other public comment okay I'll close out the public comment section of the meeting and we can move on to our next agenda item which is a presentation so superintendent Leo and Mr Mitchum going to be up for I'm start it so we wanted to give a brief update on the construction progress where we are with um the bond projects from the community's support to approve the 2024 safety security and accessibility Bond project so um we kind of this is kind of goes along two paths we have a new Standalone administration building that we're designing and planning for at the same time we are planning for the high school edition as well so those two things are part of kind of phase one of this we have some more work to come back and do at the middle school as well um and you'll see we're further along with the administration building we are in um design development where right now for the uh high school edition we are still in schematic design um mode so I'll start off with um some rather boring photos and renderings and then Glenn's going to come on with some really cool ones okay so um we've been planning weekly um our team has been meeting weekly with um our Architects and our construction manager along with other stakeholders we've brought in at different meetings to give input on different parts of the project so what you're looking at now again these are renderings but they are um based on input and um uh our actual building and what the spaces will look like so this would be the new high school um front entrance so it's very it'll be very visible it doesn't like have you know signage and stuff up on it yet but again these are still early uh designs and renderings so you can see to the right those triple doors on the tap photo um that is our new will be a new secure entrance and vestibule um that will also have dedicated space for front door either monitor or at least monitoring um so there will be dedicated space for that as well with a secure vestibule and this new addition also remember takes our uh administrative team and moves them to the front of the building so that families and individuals who need to get to them aren going through the hallways first to get to them so this also includes the new office space for the administration um this middle picture is a view from the East so it's kind of looking um from the East back at the side and then you can see the bottom picture is kind of the angle of both of those um a few photos a few renderings we have for this are on different slides so you can go to the whichever one comes next Kelly can talk about any of them this one this one I really should have shown first because it's really the most boring um plain is yes I should have shown this first then the next one looks really good um so this again is just an angled view of the front entrance of the building that's all there to say about that one so let's go to the next one yes okay this one's a little more uh little has a few more details in it and you can see I mean this is the new and existing um part am I actually going to go to the screen for a minute van existing existing existing new okay so we're talking about actually even new right here is the new edition so we'll zoom in on this in the next slide so you'll be able to see the actual Parts with in there but this includes the new main office area um additional cafeteria seating and then it also includes um two interior ramps that we're missing here in the building along with some stairs because you know we have kind of those uh funky levels as you come in um how you come in so you'll still it will still connect to our current front door here at like level really like two of three um and but it provides access uh to go up or down both in two places so they could actually um students who want to use this ramp can also get to the cafeteria this way or to the um next floor over here or down over here so we'll zoom into that and the components a little okay so current entrance thank you is still over here okay so this is if you imagine the front door right now so this is all the addition here um so the new entrance will be out further it'll be very um identifiable so folks know where to come to when they get to our school we'll have to do some a little bit of site work outside to you know redo the sidewalk and the entrance up to it um to work with our new entrance it'll also contain um offices for our principal uh both of our associate principals and our office support staff in this area while maintaining um our folks in student services will remain where they are and then we'll still have the current office space to use for offices such as the dean of students and others um that maybe are uh working out of spaces that are less desirable than an office in these areas um it's got um all gender bathrooms here as well it's got a smaller workspace we're going to maintain the current workspace for the teachers and staff and where the mailboxes are that will all be maintained but there will also be some work space here for the individuals utilizing this area so this ramp will go down to the new cafeteria space this ramp would go up to the second or the really kind of like second floor if you count the middle one one and a half um this ramp would go up here there are stairs here and then one of the other kind of unique features this is um once we get more further into the Design This is called a learning stair where there's opportunity for Gathering to um opportunity um for students to uh classes even to congregate there utilize the stairs but also showcase some of what students are doing and working on too so it's also um it's a learning stare that's something a little new that we are still designing um we also have a space like I said for uh door monitoring so whether it is a security person or whether we ever move Beyond a person into any other monitoring system there's a dedicated space for that right when someone comes in in the best ofal it'll operate much like our elementaries do where you can walk into the building but before any further um you wouldn't be able to get through those doors those would be locked you could come into the office and folks then um would find out what you needed and either um actually someone right here also May um and then these doors that access the hallways and stuff people need to be buzzed out of just like our elementary were so there's layers and then uh they can also because these have key card readers it's flexible if we ever make any changes into locking down um any of the other doors and there's also I should add there are also lock down buttons um we're looking at probably three of them in this area so it's not just up front but if we need one probably two of them these are um for these are a couple administrative assistant and an additional one station so workstations for administrative assistant so there' of course be a lock down button in that area but we also want to put one further back in case it need to lock down and isn't up there doesn't have to go up there to do that um and that again would work for the whole school of the lock down that's about as far as we are with the high school design right now um I'm happy to answer questions that I have answers to right now um or find out answers for you if you have questions specific to this Edition I think I just have some clarifying questions so this space is on the like one and a half level like this office space entr the entrance is like where everything that were that you walked us through like the office where this the administrative support is that's at the one and a half or what okay so the ramp going down takes you down to the first level which is where the cafeteria yes I should point that out that big open space right there kind of the left open that's the cafeteria space down on floor one correct you said that I did some clarifying yes and then the other learning stairs take you up to the second level right and then they ramp would okay you said that I'm just trying to visualize all of it I know cracking what you said okay at least I believe what I said so far okay that's the best that I know of and then the exist my other question I think I'm done for now so the existing door I didn't track that we were going to keep our existing entrance so the um elevator that we have now will continue to be the elevator that people will use if we need to have elevator access those existing what are now exterior doors will be then interior doors MH okay so they would still have I mean they'd probably be on hold opens most of the time cuz one student one students are pass the vule but they would still have the capacity to close and lock if we hit a lock down yes okay I'm trying to understand maybe where and like this is beyond what we're talking about now but how the learning stairs operate with where are existing stairs in that space But that's I don't that's all new okay so the stairs that exist beyond the there yeah they're still here they're still right here the learning stairs are where Dory would take her dogs to go to the bathroom out that door right here go not mine there got it yes but the existing stairwell is still there got pulling that out and uh it just uh adds a whole new that was very helpful layer of messiness yeah okay is any money in the budget going to any upgrades on the elevator or we just going to keep working with what we got uh right right now we're just still working with what we have yeah now um we're still a little early here to know if we're going to be you know uh where we are budget wise still a little early with the high school but if there's um remaining funds that's something we could put it toward is there an expectation that we will uh reconfigure any of the existing spaces in the buildings or will they largely stay as they are now they will I mean they may get new furniture but in terms of wholesale like any wall demo or movement like that we don't have the funds in the bond for that so but they may need to be repurposed with you know furniture or um because this will all get new furniture so what's you know in those spaces you know can be utilized you know this room will become available even too you know it's not part of the addition but this space will become available and we will probably take this p out um so it's a little more um there's opportunity to do a more flexible um seating and Arrangements in here so again that would um we'll see what we have left at the end if we can um and have a need to purchase more once we get down the development of that a little bit more but all of these nonfunctional Outlets are so fun you can probably buy a section of it from the school district maybe yeah it could be a fundraiser make tens of dollars tens yeah um okay this is a question for later and I think I I'm answering it myself but I do have a question about emergency egress like all of those doors at the top that are now exterior doors that will become interior doors um all like that's all I understanding is now this is wall Windows Windows Windows Windows these are the only doors now are here here for for that area yes um but there's still some exiting the current cafeteria that you can't see if that little curve kept going there's the doors oh for sure we actually had another door in there and then they did all the calculations they had to do and removed it because we didn't need it based on square footage okay yeah well that maybe not a question for later very cool all right we'll move on to the admin building and Mr Mitchum stairs are so cool I'm we've seen some images of them but not in person yet I love them as an instructive like they're so cool oh good I don't want to ask questions about the learning STS I know I can and I thought also Kath your question about the elevators it might be that we don't need them as much as we do now because because of the ramps ramp they'll be in there yeah that's nice so cool so good evening everybody I'm Glenn Mitchum I'm the deputy superintendent so glad to be here and I'm um Miss Leo and true servant leadership gave me the easy part of the presentation um so we are are excited to um soon be building a new Central administration building the idea of this building is to build a simple efficient practical building that houses all of our central office staff and um this is all going to happen in a current uh space that we own on Tower Avenue so if you went out burum and uh you can leave it there I'll tell you um you were ready though that if you went out to buram and turned right on to Abbot and then took Abbot all the way down to Lake Lancing and took another right and uh right when Lake Lancing starts curving hard to the right to head to White Hills if you turn left that's Tower a and there's an old plight sort of building it's it's barely standing it's uh it's in disrepair and full of U I don't know okay so why would you go all the way down a all the way over you could there's a lot of ways to go I know there I'm just trying to keep out hagor right L lot of I'm just talking about from here but that's where we're going to uh build this building uh we're excited about it we're excited to be a part of the Tower Community um we spent time over there uh in three different Community meetings meeting with Tower residents uh I spent time knocking on a few doors residents around there and talk to a few people there and you know I think it's going to be a an awesome spot for our Administration folks to to be a part of that Community um and uh so we're looking forward to that um so in 2012 uh my understanding there will be some here that can check me on this but in 2012 uh is when the central Administration uh staff moved from their spot down the road on Burcham to this uh spot where we're in now the idea at the time was it it was going to be temporary and that maybe eventually we would go to Red Cedar maybe is one idea red cedar was closed and then after that it uh the board decided to reopen red seeders no we won't go into that that's for sure but uh but and so what my point is that what was meant to be just a temporary thing has turned in now to multi- years of us being here and we've really have just taken uh space from the high school so part of this idea is one to give space back to the high school for them to use it and also uh there's some wisdom uh for the central administrators to not be in the same spot as the high school God forbid the high school goes into a serious lockdown of any kind uh we would be here locked down with them and unable to assist in the way that we would want to uh with our administrators so I think there's some safety wisdom uh moving moving to there we don't have a name for the building yet so you know like cat that so administration building or something you know could consider that put put you in for the run you better go with Marcus Ed Park administration building all right that's good so it was 2014 2014 okay thank you that's going to be fun to fact check rich on that because I asked him this morning it's G to be fun I appreciate that yeah um but dory's right we're in the D and D so when you when you work on this with folks like king Scott who are Architects you learned terms like d DD we're at DD right now and design and development so because of that we do have prettier pictures you can go to that next one that first picture is uh R rendering of what the admin ation building will likely look somewhat like this that's the front entrance of it um if you were standing on Tower and looking at the building that's the that's the direction you're facing there that would be East and there's maybe that's Dory out there with one of her new puppies I don't know could be that person one Never Say Never uh so that's the exterior and then the next slide um this is the I'm going to do like Dory this is the picture we just saw from the exterior was from this side so this is the entrance there's a reception area there uh with some bathrooms um well no actually bathrooms are over here this Corridor this is a kind of a wellness area for mothers that would need to use that for nursing or other functions this Corridor here leads past a comer room and then into we're most excited about will be the boardroom as well as um a community or a training room and see some of the pictures of kind Vision about that place we can do a needed Place we've not had F uh that we can do good professional development with our staff uh if you go this way this takes you into the main office hallway these are where the central offices will be there's a kind of an open concept here for administrative assistance working in there um there is a break cre there a courtyard that we can might be able to do some cool things with posting folks and and there's a couple other um Flex rooms here and here um so you know we feel like it's simple efficient practical not overdone um but meets the needs of what we're so some other just quick pictures I'll show you Kelly you can hit that next side that's a rendering of the front uh reception area as folks would enter the building that's what they would see there there's a couple more pictures of the same area it's another angle there and then that shows kind of the seating area that would be in the re setion area these next few pictures are pictures of the boardrooms so you can see it's a real flexible space uh one of the rooms that I didn't point out on the on the map there uh has a Furniture storage room so we anticipate being able having very U mobile Furniture in there that we can wheel in and out depending on the purpose of the meeting uh there's monitors behind uh the board table there and then if you keep clicking you can see that if board members are sitting there uh instead of straining their neck and trying to look at the screen like you're doing right now they look so happy I know they are happy there are monitor straight across for them to use uh lots of exterior light which would be a new thing for our board um and then that's another angle of it that last picture right there is the hallway no yeah you can go to there yeah shows a work room on the left and then that's that hallway have offices um with that open concept of uh Administrative Assistant working along their um outside those offices there's some flexible space there too uh for conferencing and meeting and and things like that so that is basically what the central admin offices our ideas are our Concepts we're DD is a late phase we we had to get going on this quickly so we're hoping to demo the current building that's on Tower right now uh probably um early spring which is February yep yep and then uh break ground on this building uh after that so we have to give the muskrats and turtles and rats that are in that building right now a little forewarning that they bu their their premises is going to get uh demolished so those out yeah so questions yeah um so I have a couple is this also a secure entrance to this building it is a secure entrance yep do we have a way to uh from that front entrance that I showed you or Reception Area back to those offices or boardroom that we have uh secured doors um to kind of quadrate that off and this gray area in the middle that the basketball court that is a I think if I'm looking at that right that's actually just a a room for all of our technology it's archives storage oh no say oh yeah there's archives room yeah that's signicant space for that yeah I can't see that but yeah um and the last question is um is is there a lot of asbest abatement that needs to be done to the old building before it comes down I don't remember if and done okay yeah that's not been a big issue so February they can just F those building okay excellent yeah thank you anticipated date for completion would be like next October November which again we're not on a timeline to move over you know that's the nice thing it's not like our elementary schools where kids are coming got done you know we can move anytime so it could be within a year yes that's a wild that's the Hope yeah great another interesting piece is the the first um sketches designs we got for this building were twostory and we came back and said man we really want to get it to one story in the neighborhood so that we're not you know because they're are homes on both sides you know so um I think Scott was able to redesign it and get it on our property even with the needs and getting off out of two stories just made for better more accessibility yeah kind of fits the neighborhood better yeah yeah and just like when we have anticipate larger board meetings now we can move to the high school y we'll have more capacity in that space than we do in this space yeah but if we if something big was going on um we absolutely still have our auditoriums available awesome all right thanks you guys thank you thanks for all the work you guys oh my oh my the place is falling apart [Laughter] already thank you the next item on the agenda is board discussion does anybody wish to discuss anything tonight all right let's move on to our action items uh first action item is tuition rates can I get a motion I move the Board of Education approve the 2024 25 tuition rates as presented second moved by trusty Ferris Highland seconded by trusty Chambers uh do we need any discussion on this motion do we have anybody paying tuition right now no say in my years in this role we've not accepted a tuition student okay but as I recall this is just something that state law requires us to set the board has to approve it yes okay so um with that all in favor of the motion as presented please say I any opposition the the motion carries unanimously and that will conclude our action items the next thing is committee reports so I guess we'll begin with Academia and Technology trusty Lions yep um we have not met since our last meeting and our next meeting is this Wednesday at 1 pm in this room thank you facilities committee trusty feris highler we have not met but should probably schedule something so I'll reach out sounds good finance committee trusty atel uh our meeting was cancelled due to lack of items so we meet again December 2nd at 1 pm in this room thank you intergovermental relations trusty Tes nothing at this time but also we should probably get something scheduled soon the Personnel committee that's my committee we have not met policy committee trustee Chambers we were scheduled to meet last Monday and I made the decision to cancel that meeting we still have some outstanding um policy um updates from June to go through but since that hit right after that professional learning all day um session with staff and the outstanding items um for that committee relate to items that are waiting for um staff review it didn't feel like a good use of Staff time to ask them to right after that to send you know to it didn't seem like a good use of Staff time so we canceled that meeting those items are not pressing and our next meeting is December 2nd at 10:30 in this room so you guys are stacking them still like that hopefully all right um are there any announcements I don't have announcement I just have one other question um back to the bond that came up uh when will we be provided the dollars to bid you know the bids will when will the bids be coming in that we'll approve um for either project the first project the admin building will be coming first and I think I think we're going out to bid in late January maybe February but let me double check and confirm that okay and then um the the bids Ando groundbreaking projected dates for the high school project I don't know yet I'll have to check and find out for you yeah that's fine thank you yeah for you'll be out there with your hats on again yeah and our shovels the break your hard hats shovels vest ready to go I even though I moved I still have it I'm ready I wear it every year for Halloween it's a good ready it's a costume what do you mean costume I wear it to Myer useful you you guys get to keep yours I never got to keep mine oops they like ran off okay I did get my hat back it's in her purse why is your purse like this big book bag so uh the next regularly scheduled meeting of the board of education is uh November 25th so just a couple weeks from today Thanksgiving week uh if there's no other announcements we will adjourn at 7:43 thank you all for being here thank you [Applause] [Music]
