address individuals by name please state your name before beginning to speak the presiding office of the board should have the right to limit the number of person who may address the board on the same subject is there anyone would like to speak please state your name and kind of speak clearly into your mic Nick kuster resident 428 kpo Street uh and good evening board I'm here to address agenda item 21.8 uh as a resident and a third generation resident of the neighborhood I have seen the best of our schools in the 90s when they were bustling there on crepo and I have seen the worst when they were hastily left abandoned unsecured and essentially left to be scrapped in over the past decade and a half I feel there are many different opinions as to how we should move forward in this community to give our kids the best future and I think that often the decision makers are not people affected by the decisions that they make and so I'd like to provide some perspective from someone who does experien these schools 247 um I think it's really really important to say that I tentatively would like to support this I tentatively would like to support it because I have seen designs over the past 15 years two to three different designs that were dropped on the community that were not what the community needed that often that iterations of this board iterations of our funders have seen the value of the cultural center but have not looked across the street at the value of the pre-existing neighborhood many of which those houses were built before that school was placed there and so I would like to just ask that this board take very seriously this once in a-lifetime opportunity and take the time to consider the people that are spending their whole lives in that neighborhood that are affected day in and day out a few instances that you may or may not known had you gone to Central worked at Central or hung out in the area in the 90s if there was no logistic ability when there were four schools to have that school served every single day twice a day there were cars blocking every residential on one side and there were buses blocking all the spaces on the rest this is when we had four Community Schools I can't imagine it'll be much better when we have one um I would also like to just have you consider that the footprint of the building because those houses are pre-existing may be an important thing to keep to preserve as much of the structure and its footprint a five-story building that close to the road can also cause issues for those homes shade block sunlight cause other issues that we may not have thought about including noise and pollution uh a few other things that you may not have considered that the residents every single day that use these Community facilities that live across for them do consider we have watched for arson for the past 15 years in that unsecured building I think many of us love the look The feel the classicism that Central and Whittier have given us the sense of pride in our community I'm also extremely worried that we'll be dropped on something that's more equivalent to a cartoonish th Carmen answorth design something that will have no historicity something that will not put pride in our students and be purely a coste effective solution I ask that the community in specific residents that live on crepo second Avon and the adjoining areas that will be affected by the traffic pushed to the school from all the expressways uh Robert as well as Court are included in an advisory committee and are allowed to have a real opinion and a real say in how this develop moves forward so for the next 100 years we can avoid these kinds of problems and we can continue a dialogue as good neighbors instead of agitated neighbors thank you so much for your time thank you very much Madam chair what was his name MC good evening my name is Sarah shitler I am also a resident of crpo Street in the Central Park neighborhood um I support the approval of the agenda item I think it's 21.9 I'm not sure if I'm wrong um but the the uh contract to start the process for a new high school um in general I think that the use of available funds to build a state-of-the-art educational facility for the Flint students um is of utmost importance um I want Flint Community Schools to succeed because a strong Flint doesn't exist without a strong public school system so thank you for that that said I have deep ambivalence over the choice to locate the facility at the Central and Whittier campus um first I also fear a loss of the beautiful historic structures that have such cultural significance with our residents not in our neighborhood but Citywide even region wide um to that end I ask that you try to preserve as much of the facades as possible to maintain that um that feel and that uh history second any development on the site is going to inherently change the character and functioning of our neighborhood this is literally my front yard um and the demolition reconstruction and normal operations of a new school will impact me 247 um in my time here since 2016 Flint Community Schools has not always been the best neighbor um resulting in the significant uh uh sorry degradation of the buildings um and continued safety issues for the neighborhood including like Nick mentioned the arson um shootings and blight um I don't feel like a trusting relationship has yet been built between the school system and the neighbors given the immense impact this will have on a residents I the least I can ask is that you respect your neighbors and allow us meaningful input on the design of the property in the campus um and I'm confident that when we work together we can have a stronger result that supports everything the Flint kids need for their education while also increasing the quality of life for the residents thank you thank you next good evening every clearly your name yes my name is Ryan boine um I'm a resident of M Park I've been there 13 years uh former public school teacher also and I came tonight to support uh similar the proposal to pursue conversations about Ren renovating Central um having been here 13 years my wife is from the area too been involved in a lot of different forms of Education uh I feel like the best way to put it would be that offense is your best defense and I've seen Flint trying to play defense a lot trying to make sure stuff doesn't get sucked away and pulled away way but what I see here is is the conversation starting to turn towards offense how can we create something that will draw in will create you know um an enticing pull towards the school system and so I wanted to come and just support it simply uh I think there probably been a lot of good points made um and I want to agree with those and just uh say as a parent of three I've got three kids um we've we've been in the the city for a while and tried to figure out what you know how how Education Works when you're trying to raise a family in the city we're committed we're supportive of it and we would could see a lot of benefits coming from this so I just wanted to say thank you for bringing it up and I support it and uh hope you have a great evening thank you thank you next good evening School Board uh my name is Joel Arnold I'm a was a former resident of kpo Street for three years um now live just about a half a mile away um and similar to the comments we've heard earlier I'm here just to speak in support a resolution 21.8 and I kind of want to speak on it just for two real reasons one this really is I think in many ways the ideal location for a public high school so so many of the Suburban districts we compete with their high schools are you know on a campus off a road somewhere that nobody can walk to that's in a corn field and we have an ability as a district and as a city to have a high school that's next door to a community college next door to the largest Cultural Center in our state next door to amenities that kids in Birmingham and Royal Oak would kill to have near their their high school and yet we can we can provide the resources that much better resource districts do not have and that's an amazing Advantage as we live in a world uh whether we like it or not of school choice and competition um Additionally you know this site has been noted for you know probably since Central close but at least since 2013 in City Planning documents and in other documents as an ideal site for a central public high school so this is a conversation this community's been having for more than a decade and writing down in plans for more than a decade uh and so I think it's so exciting to see this and I think the comments that um residents of current residents of Central Park raise issues around traffic issues around congestion these are good these are the problems of growth right these are problems that we as a city have not uh been I guess fortunate enough to deal with in a long time and so what a blessing to us if we can get in a position where we're dealing with problems of growth not problems of decline so the second thing I want to speak to and I know as mentioned earlier as well is the importance in doing this to try and preserve this gorgeous historic beautiful Landmark that our city has um you know over the years a a lot of these we've seen a lot of historic structures that g derel for a long time whether it was the Durant or the Capitol Theater or Atwood restored but I think the message that this building can send is this is a building that will still be owned by the people right and governed by an elected School Board that's chosen by the people and that's something in our city that really apart from our Public Library we lack uh as a publicly owned building and so I think when we talk about this space you know uh often times we've seen in other communities and oftentimes in our own Community this desire to just knock everything down start fresh you know Wipe Out the past but I think whether it's recent Restorations we've seen in our own City like the Durant like the capital other cities like Michigan Central Station right facilities that were vacant and derel far longer than Flint Central has been vacant and derel for be reused for modern purposes I ask that we reject this sort of choice that uh well the only way to move forward is to throw away our history and throw away this structure the message that would send I really encourage this board and the Architects working on this project and the team to Val Val this structure to Value this history and the message that that can send to people in our community that we can provide worldclass topnotch best educational facilities in our County and region while at the same time preserving a structure that I'll tell you as someone who works in real estate development you could never build that again it would be cost prohibitive so once it's gone it's really gone forever so I really appreciate this board for acting as a model of collaboration I appreciate this agenda item and you guys working towards this uh and I hope you consider my comments thank you thank you very much next good evening my name is Andrew watchorn I live at 918 name East kley sorry I didn't get your name my name is Andrew watchorn I live at 918 East kley uh which many of you may know is at the intersection of where the school district and the college Cultural Center meet um I would like to State one thing which I know the board may be aware of some members that uh at administration building both of your light posts have fallen down and are now pointed in my living room window so that might be something to consider but I also uh uh am here to tell you that I support uh the proposal to repurpose uh Central with money that comes as an additional benefit for you all to make a change that takes a building that has been an asset I will say that I would was a uh a student teacher at Flint Central in the year 2000 I had a tremendous experience there uh now at that time Central was absolutely an asset and I know people on this board have said this is an asset we must be very careful with but as I walk by that building now on my daily walks this is also a liability uh I can imagine someone getting in into that building and burning it down and spreading some of the chemicals that we now see from fires raging in La onto our neighborhoods so this is a liability for the school district and it's something that can be and needs to be taken care of the design is is up to you all but I would also uh uh Echo some of my street mates my neighbors concerns about including the neighborhood association in design planning and also uh considering that there are very very uh well understood ways to preserve aspects of a building that we all may see as uh an asset to the community and something that that people are attached to I uh went to University of Michigan an arbor and their Old North High School I forget what it's actually called it was the freeze building when I was there but it was a high school building that the university repurposed into a dorm but they kept the facade so there are very clever ways to keep some of our history while also improving the building and one last point I also did observation during my my uh time at University learning to be a teacher at ctec so I spent many days going into the old ctec building which is a beautiful 1920s building they removed that building which I think is unfortunate but they did take the opportunity to replace it with a world world class building and I have taught Robotics and supported robotics against at the uh uh events at the new cast tech building and it is drawing students to that uh that District so please take this opportunity to look carefully at what this money can do to turn what may be a liability now into an asset for our community thank you thank you very much next good evening everyone ashney a NE like ashy Dunning formerly young um and I came here today to first of all just thank you all for your service it's not easy to sit where you're sitting and take all of these opinions and I came to speak in support of the renovation of central I am not a resident across the street though my mother did attend Central at some point um so I appreciated all of those perspectives and for me as the executive director of the Flint Freedom schools collaborative you all got an email from me a few hours ago um our interest is to be in alignment with the school district um and we're really hopeful that through this process you'll be very intentional about figuring out what the people are interested in and implementing some type of solution that will be Equitable um and inclusive in the process so I really just came to just affirm you all in the work that you're doing I wanted you to see my face to say that we at the Flint Freedom schools collaborative we have wonderful culture so we are in alignment from my board my board knows that we are here to support you and in alignment with Flint Community School District all the way to our team members and that's what I have to say I look forward to seeing what you all come up with for this process but I trust each of you to do so good night good night thank you next uh good evening Flint Board of Education my name is Derek Dorman and I'm a flint resident I'm here today to speak to my full support for agendum item uh 21.8 I think that a long-term plan to redevelop the Flint Central and Whittier campus into the city's Main High School Middle School campus is so critical to our future um it's right next door to one of the best collection of cultural institutions in the nation and our community college meaning that the opportunities for a great education are really Limitless um however as a flint resident I am also asking that any work to redevelop this campus also center around historic preservation of the building as we've seen in our own City whether it's the Durant the Capital Theater the restoration of other schools like coolage or Oak Street we can provide top-notch modern facilities without erasing our City's history the recent Redevelopment of Michigan Central Station in Detroit which sat empty for nearly 40 years is an example of how preserving our history for future use can bring a community together and serve such a deeper purpose than other uh than another generic new building can I firmly believe that Flint kids deserve the best and we have a chance here to provide them that in a way that preserves our history and brings arguably Flint's greatest Landmark back to shine for our entire city once again thank you thank you next good evening Flint Board of Education I'm Chad sler here I'm a parent of three students at DTM and also o um want to lend my support in favor of this uh agreement with plant Moran to start the process of Designing and imagining a new high school for the city of Flint um I think that uh I will be brief because I think you guys are working together and in agreement and want to see this happen and I want to see this happen too I think Flint Community Schools has been making some statements these last uh couple years um with the work that's happened at Potter and brown at Holmes and Doyle Ryder and more to come and I think this is the next step the next statement that we need to tell the world truly that Flint Community Schools is here to stay that there's a future that we're not just going to be absorbed into a larger entity we're not just going to tell our kids to go find some other school or find some uh suburban school or a charter school um those places can turn our kids away if uh they don't have the right record or they don't have space for them or whatever but Flint Community Schools cannot turn um kids from Flint away they have to to welcome the children of our city into our schools and so we need a statement like this we need a high school a lot of people have told me that the the the elementary schools in FCS are good send your kids there and when they get to middle school then get out of there and I don't want to do that our kids are still in elementary school but High School is not that far away I don't want to do that I want to be a part of FCS uh until you know through my kids graduation and Beyond and I would love to see um this project take place I think more than a statement to to outside entities I think it's a statement to our own youth to our own kids that they matter that they have a place where they can belong where they can be curious where they can imagine a future for themselves and their community and and letting them know we want you right here in the middle of our city not on the outskirts not in a corner where nobody can see you we want you right here as part of our community you are important um is critical but I also want to just say that uh I'm not just here to try to tell you what to do I also am here to offer my help if I can serve on a committee or offer any feedback on the design plans or interface with uh various uh stakeholders or organized parents or even if you just need someone to pick up trash on the the property um most of yall have my number you just let me know I I'm happy to partner with you guys to see this happen so thanks for your work thanks for serving um the the the children of of our city and thanks for um considering this tonight thanks J next hi everyone uh my name is Samantha Farah I live at 224 East Court Street Flint Michigan and I am a proud graduate of the Flint Community Schools not just any school but I think you can guess where this is going Flint Central High School and not just me was I I was not the only one in my family to graduate from Flint Central my father who's here with me was also a graduate of Flint Central High School in 1981 and my grandmother was also a graduate of Flint Central High School in 1948 and my family helped to build alongside other immigrants the oldest Assyrian Church in the nation which is still standing over a hundred years later on the on Flint's east side and my grandmother was one of the first women in our family to graduate college Flint Junior College which y'all might know or remember um and a proud graduate of the University of Anne Arbor and she came back to be a teacher in Flint and I say this all to talk about Legacy to talk about my not just my family's Legacy but to talk about our community's legacy and our City's Legacy and Flint Central is is key to that and um and and very much where a lot of my my own legacy began and so I was one of this I was the second to the last graduate of Flint Central High School and in my freshman year I was proud to walk through the halls of that school I felt the history not of just my city but of my family surrounding me and I knew I wasn't there to only receive an education but that I was part of some so a tradition that was much greater than me um and unfortunately that was a privilege that I held but that one that my brother you my younger brother just two years younger than me um wasn't able to have because of the at that time the board's decision to to close the school but I I have hope I have hope in all of you and I have hope in our city that future Generations will be able to have that same experience of legacy and I'm so excited about the direction and then about the opportunity that you all have to um to do do a couple things that kind of come once in a generation I think to not just protect the and ensure the the future of our Scholars by investing in them in a new high school but specifically investing in a cultural institution that has set um vacant and dormant for far too long and so I just wanted to come and express my my gratitude truly as a citizen as a committed citizen to this community um to the direction that this board is heading and to really um show my support to to um not just the rebuilding not just the building of a high school right but the specifically the choice to invest in Flint Central High School something that's centrally located it's the cultural heartbeat of of our city in many many ways and I it I it's walkable sorry I'm rambling now because I see the T the time going but um it's walkable I used to walk to high school so it's not just about the location it's about the cultural heritage and it's about investing in our kids future and so thank you for for considering this proposal and and I hope that youall support it thank you very much much at this time I would like to invite CL construction to join us for the renovation update good evening thank you boor thank you uh super tenant Jones for the opportunity to come and and just show where we're at right now with the with the new uh Cube project at uh the Brunell Holmes campus along with an update on uh where we stand right now with the eser projects so to get started um this this was a photo taken back in um Mid late October so this is just the the the track the new track and football field soccer along with the the um where the basketball courts are pickle ball courts so right now nothing has changed on that uh the work that's remaining to be done and'll be completed in the spring of 25 is the surface material that we will be put on the track uh the football soccer field will be seating that and getting grass established and then there's some miscellaneous Landscaping that needs to be done between some areas around that area and then as well as around the two new playgrounds which are next up on the presentation um so the picture on the left was taking uh so that's the K5 playground uh that was taken in October uh the picture on the right is right after we got the surfacing in so that would have been uh the first part of November um at this point everything is done it has been certified it's turned over for use um the next photo is so this is the prek the the ecdd playground uh this was once again taken in October and um the next one this one was taken in um November as well right after the surface was wrapped up so there's finishing up some some miscellaneous things uh the there is a few punch list items that are remaining to be done which will be completed in the spring of 25 uh which is some seating around the perimeter of that along with some Landscaping on both this playground and the other one and then there are there is a a piece of damaged equipment that is not a safety issue and they decided that we'll leave it until the spring to take it and replace that piece of equipment that's that's damaged um so that those things uh we're tracking right now and that'll be done in the spring uh and we'll do that so that the kids are still able to use that playground however um um when we do that it'll just be off hours so that it doesn't impact the use of that space uh the next piece so this I added this is basically the floor plan so the gray area that's brell and then the the white area that is the new connector and the cube and why I put that in here just so we can talk about I wish I brought a pointer but I don't have one um what you're about to see on the next few uh slides which are some pictures of the construction so um this is the picture on the left or on the right excuse me is the connector so that is looking towards homes standing at brunell's entrance looking towards homes uh you can see the trenches that is the footings that were that have been put in um the photo on the left is just a little it's further down on the roof of brell so you can just see what's going on so you'll see in the one little photo there's a there's some guys kind of in a hole that's where the Elevator Shaft is so this next photo which was taken uh Monday uh you'll see uh what you see here is the photo on the left is actually the connector and um the the tened area that is where the gross motor room is so that's an enclosure so we can build the masonary walls and then there's a if you look at that photo you can see kind of this wall protruding up above that um that containment area that's the Elevator Shaft and then so the next photo on the right is just another photo of the connector so you can see the windows as it's as it's um uh going towards the cube the next photo is so this is just once again the area the photo on the left is the containment area for um so we can heat it and and build the gross motor room walls and the next two photos are just inside that area so you can see that was all taken Monday currently uh well they they didn't work mon or Tuesday and Wednesday because of the cold but we did were able to get two walls almost up to height um so we're on track right now um is schedule update we're on track to have the single story masonary so that would be the connector and the gross motor room to be wrapped up on 125 weather dependent uh the steel erection so that will be putting the putting all the steel together and starting that process will begin on 127 with the uh low roof area of what we've the Mason area we've got in steel will be completed uh the end of the first week in March which at that point we will begin roughing in for Electrical Plumbing our heating and cooling systems will begin um rough end of that work uh the second week in March also uh glazing so I want to go back to the very first photo so when I talk glazing I'm talking the glass so what I'm talking about is if you look at that photo of the cube that glass is what we'll start putting in in April so you'll see that going in and around the building so um that is where the where we are schedule-wise currently within the next two months uh next month I'll have more photos and more updates but currently we're on track and we're schedule or we're on schedule to be completed uh September 5th of 20125 so is there any questions regarding the cube project right now yeah uh thanks Dan for the presentation uh just one question and one kind of tongue and cheek comment how many square feet is a cube again it is 5,000 per floor so it's a total of roughly 10,000 some square feet okay and just I think he said this a while back but a lot of this work is done by like union skill trade labor yes correct okay now again this next comment is a kind of a tug and- cheek comment but like I'm just thinking this school Potter door Rider Etc we've been you know given them a lot of like contracts to do some good work right and then we have a lot of these vacant properties so specifically um we had tour down in Washington two years ago two wish years ago it'd be nice if maybe sometime in the future to give back to us for you know working with them in conjunction if they could do like a playground or track on some of these fields with their you know with their support but but just wanted to put that out there thank you though appreciate it trusty Perkins I was uh wondering about the the glass in the cube yes is that that plexiglass or are you concerned about vandalism on that before you finish sorry sorry to interrupt you um no that glass it's it's a store it's what we call a a curtain wall so that's that's it is a structural glass so it's not easily vandalized it's not like um someone could shoot a BB gun into it and and and crack the crack the glass it's not like that so this is more of a of a structural glass I mean it could be vandalized with with paint and stuff but it it takes a little more to vandalize the glass now I mean a a a a bullet would do some would cause some cracking but not a BB gun or just throwing stones at it isn't going to necessarily crack the glass okay superintendent Jones uh yes thanks Mr mner for your presentation um to add to this presentation I would like to just um remind the board the work that you've done with allowing the committee to work with brell Holmes and um the neighborhood group being a part of that uh they were a part of that process from um the schematic design of that and they're still going to be a part of that work until we have completed uh the cube in which they will have a room in that space um which uh we've talked about that being the future making sure that we're connecting with with our Flint neighborhood associations um this board and the superintendent has been to the Flint Public Library several times has done presentations to that area to ensure that they are in the know of what Fint Community Schools is doing and so our next meeting with the brell homes uh neighborhood association will be February 7th with our partners with the Committees so that we're talking about the cube and we're moving the constru ction timeline along with the programming timeline uh so I just wanted to make sure that the board was aware of that and we will give you uh that timeline once we get with the group and create uh the programming timeline with our neighborhood association thank you thank you so I just want to give it just wh sorry go ahead I just wanted to touch base just a little bit on the Esser projects and where we are with that and as we're wrapping that up um so bid pack six which was roof Replacements so Potter homes DTM are complete uh and I've submitted to the state for uh certificates of completion for that Brunell is we'll wrap up that roof once we do the roof for the cube and tie all that stuff together uh the equipment pre- purchase is completed uh Potter renovation since completed I actually got the letter back from the state today uh home stem will be be completed in the spring uh Brunell stem is is complete I'm just waiting on one um one piece of of a report so we can submit it to the state and we'll be done there uh the three gyms Potter homes and branell are complete and are turned over for use at the school uh as of December the end of December the PA systems at Freeman DTM Eisenhower and Southwest were completed uh and we had inspections the end of last week and they all passed so we're working on that so right now um all the Esser work is scheduled to be completed by the summer of 25 which is well ahead of the extension that was filed for um for the Esser Grant so uh just an update it's great news that we just have a few little things that we need to wrap up and um we'll be done with that so is there any questions related to that work how you doing good good job um it's just a soft person in me it's cold outside um with you all working on the cube do you have days where you if it's too cold you guys will not work or you guys are tough and it doesn't matter I'm gonna well I'm not tough but but no I will say that for the most part um like the last two days the only work we have going on right now is masonary work the last two days because it's been so cold even though we have winter conditions set up and we're heating that we can't keep because it's not insulated the heat just goes through so the last two days because of the sub uh zero temperatures we have not worked because what happens with masonary is you go to you go as as it's curing and it and it and it cools down way too fast it'll it'll start cracking so you'll see cracks in the walls if we grow I don't want to get too deep into it but you answer my question because I was supp to say the curing is can't take place I know a little bit about that but that big glass is there any way could be shatterproof I know that may be a little bit more costly but I think it's worth it let me um look into that okay and get a little more detail on what what that what that glass looks like what what would that look like if it was shatterproof because of the significant amount of glass that's there and um I think quality is just good when it comes to Renovations and shiny buildings um I think everything looked great I haven't seen it I wanted everything to be complete and now that I see the word complete I would definitely um make my way and clap for you all looks like you done a lot of great work and I just appreciate the um consistency of the quality in you answering all questions so I appreciate that thank you thank you are there any more questions truste I mean vice president McIntyre yes thank you for another wonderful update I really appreciate you coming before for us I know it's not always the most pleasant experience um with the just back a little bit to the cube um schedule um it says the masonry is targeted to be up updated to be complete this Saturday is that for real yes okay so by this Saturday it's that's going to be done the lower level so that we can start the structural steel so it's bearing walls on the lower so that would be the connector piece and the um I'll go back to that slide it'll be the connector oops too far right I I I know what it is and the gross motor but I just it just seemed it's in a couple days so um just you know and it's on a Saturday so I just wanted to know if you know there's any possibility that that's going to be delayed at all or no they actually will work Sunday too we've already had conversation about that because they need to be done because steel has to start on 127 steel will start on 127 as per schedule they are well aware of it they know the process they need to have their bearing walls so the walls that are supporting those steel columns or steel beams need to be installed that's what they're working on right now that's what that's what the commitment is okay so yes it's all weekend but because we they need to be okay all right I I appreciate that it just it always makes me nervous to see something presented that is you know scheduled to be completed in a couple of days and you know have the pictures uh well you're in charge you're in charge of that I you're you're the expert I am not and so just just checking in with that yep that's all yeah so thank you um with the S projects was there any project part of the project or any of the construction that you're aware of that we weren't allowed to have reimbursed by user funds because we preemptively closed structures or buildings do you know was there anything that had to be given back from the eser money yes I can't answer that specifically I can say that would be the cfo's answer we we we ran what we did for construction we spent the dollars all the dollars that that were there plus for construction okay all right but you know what I'm asking right the was there any construction that was done that ended up being wasteful because we preemptively Clos buildings so you're saying to ask the CFO about that I I I guess let me let me ask you this question question you're you're you're asking if there was some work that we done that couldn't get reimbursed by essers because we were closing yeah is that what you're asking yeah so we had a we had a plan we had the the Esser schedule and the idea was that any money that of for buildings that were going to not have students in them okay thank you no no so all the money we spent was on the buildings that will have students in them right that will have students but but was anything shifted so that you did work you did construction work and now all of a sudden it's like well it was a it was a waste there there was there was all the buildings that we did work on those are the buildings that this that Flint schools is still maintaining it's not something that's going to be closed or or thought to be closed okay so we did not have to give back eser funds that you're aware of as it relates to Construction no okay are there any more questions see thank you Mr clar thank you thank you very much great job thank you all thank you very much I now call upon superintendent Jones to present an action item 21.8 to the board thank you Dr Joyce I seek a motion and a second from the board to approve action item 21.8 a proposal for schematic design oversight for Flint Community Schools district new Middle High School campus and coming here on the stage is Miss Nicole blocker many of you remember her uh not only from the board retreat uh but also the planning of consolidation we did uh just a couple years ago uh so thank you for being here uh and driving over all of that weather uh Nicole and I'll turn it over to the board president Madam chair yes I make a motion the board approves uh action item 2 21.8 support it has been properly move and supported is there any discussion from board yes yeah who truste Lona yeah so first off I want to thank um all the residents who came those who spoken didn't speak uh to our meeting tonight to voice their opinion about the campus in subzero weather think the last I saw was like one degree outside um so thank you um number two you know I just want to reiterate some of the points that were made uh number one you know this is a one location that's in the Central Area no point intended in the city whether you're from the north west south or east side where you can access by a highway so to me it's about equity and access um equally as important you know it's by my college when it's warm out it's by even Flint you can walk there it's right across from a library I went there today bought a book by Jimmy because got a book by Jimmy Carter and I bought rented a book by Jimmy Carter because I wanted some you know inspiration during these times it's by all the different institutions so that enriches their academic experience at no cost to them and a bit deeper into that being by a world-class Cultural Center I live two blocks from the vacant blighted school myself and this is not really knock on anybody but if you go there right now a lot of folks who go to the waiting for a Broadway show or they go to you know FIA for a party or an event a lot of them don't look like me um both adults and children and that's okay because you know that's not our governance us putting a high school middle school there in my eyes democratizes that campus to say hey you know what if you're from the north side of Flint the West Side Southside the color of your skin how you look how much money you make you're part of this worldclass Cultural Center campus now at no cost to you or your family and you can use all these institutions because they're yours to use so I want to emphasize that when it comes to access um being accessible and being Equitable um on the piece that we heard about the architectural piece um they don't build buildings like this anymore I don't want to knock any buildings that the schools have been built in our area but a lot of these newer Schools they're going to be not the best shape in 2030 years because they were built cheaply with cheap materials the cool thing about Central is number one even though it's been through some rough times it looks really nice um if it was given the proper TLC um if you go to the uh Grand Central Station in Detroit uh Ford has about 2,000 employees there there's about another thousand who are like startups that building's been abandoned caught on fire had about a dozen trees on its roof growing for about 40 50 years if you go buy it now it's like night and day it's beautiful and by the way the Wi-Fi works inside you have folks from across the country and world who go there for business and to view it and really it's a monument to the city's comeback and I think that the Flint central campus could be our model um as a comeback City and again like the speaker said this is the one property in that area that is governed by an elected board that the people chose not a friend who was appointed to a board for a nonprofit like you elected us and we had the choice to both rebuild it and make it a center of of revitalization or we can build something entirely new and that really recognize our Legacy and bring that into the future so that's a lot a lot to say I'll support it um as the superintendent said I want to reiterate uh we worked really really closely with the brown nail homes uh neighborhood association to design uh the BR Holmes campus I mean I wasn't in those meetings but I'm sure they would on you about everything to the tea giving them space in the cube uh the traffic access I just say this it's 2025 I live two blocks from the school it's there was there was a school there for 80 years I think we can proactively address the traffic issue while taking the input of our neighbors who live near the school so to me that's not a Mountain that's a hill to climb and I think we can do it in a proactive Equitable way and those are my comments thank you are there any more question pertaining to the content of this proposal Madam chair uh trustee re I'm sorry Hi how are you Happy New Year um I my one of my main con questions for it is I talked to some of the residents over the years um I'm a product of Flint schools I remember when Central was open I recall a lot of streets were closed off once Central closed and it's not I don't think it's a lot of straight through traffic except I think maybe courton kley over in that area um will will that definitely has to be addressed because of everything that's there now in that area you probably looking at maybe three streets and my question is how with the influx of a high school and a middle school first of all let me make this clear I'm in I 100% support this you all but I'm always one I want to do it right the first time I believe the residents that came here I appreciate them coming because they live there but however where it's located the city is interested in that not just the neighborhood but the entire city because of what sits there I believe every one in the city of Flint goes in that area you know if it's just for FIA or the Whiting or FCC or just going to M if you will so it's important to me for the traffic to be to be conducive and that the residents I don't I I hope they don't well living by a school you'll have a lot of traffic but I just my go my hope is that we'll be able to minimize as much inconvenience for that neighborhood thank you truste king oh one more thing because of Central and the material I definitely want to make sure a lot of that material that Central is built that it be able to be reused because a lot of that stuff in that building is priceless and I think it would be our the advantage of the district to maintain as much as we possibly can I just want to publicly speak that thank you trusty King yes I I would like to say um thank you to all the residents that came out and um spoke about 21.8 um I think about uh Sam Cook it's been a long time coming A change is g to come that's what I think about when I when I see this come up uh to uh for approval because as we know um our community has been promised a high school years um schematic designs has been designed right now our Board of educ is moving in the right direction we submitted our 12d application we we rolling um and you know Sam I mean you know I like old school music so that's Sam Cook is the first person that come to mind but um as it pertains to the residents um you know I've I've attended Central Park neighborhood me Association meetings along with uh trusty Luna hearing the feedback um that's one of the things we talked about at the board table um but I know all of my colleagues just want to listen to The Community First about hey what you would like to see as we model that with Brandon Holmes and um I'm excited to support this resolution and get it done thank you um board members M uh superintendent Jones uh for the public for the record Could you um update us on how we got here the money involved in it uh what is expected for the district and how did we arrive here and I think that would help uh the public understand a whole lot of thing and how did we get to here sure and then if there's any more question they can ask you sure I'll I'll try to be as brief as possible um we the Board of Education and the Administration has been working uh to consolidate our district uh we have just above 2700 scholars in our district and we want to make sure that in our consolidation we're looking at our footprint uh it doesn't necessarily mean that you're closing it means that we're repurposing Ing and making sure that our Scholars that we serve and those Scholars that we do not serve have somewhere to come with good programming as well as modern and updated facilities and so this is a part of the consolidation uh there is a consolidation infrastructure fund uh that was approved in the education fund this year that Flint Community Schools on on last Thursday um Wednesday or Thursday Wednesday y Wednesday I was up to what we were up to like 1 1:00 a.m. working on this document to make sure our information was correct and uh we turned in our 12d application in order for us to receive uh funding uh from the state uh to be a a possible match uh From the Mob foundation so that we can build our uh facility and so we're here uh because you want to have a program or project manager on board to facilitate uh construction management to facilitate schematic design and to also facilitate our archist our our architect uh work that's going on and so plant Moran has been a good support for us over the last two years and we want to make sure we're moving forward with this and in doing so board tonight uh we start the process of involving our community neighborhood grou groups and also our committee uh youve already approved us to move forward with our our for committee which we will be adding someone from the neighborhood association uh to that group as well uh but we want to make sure that we have uh someone at the helm to support that as we're managing the the district as a whole doing academics and the regular normal work of everyday uh the everyday everyday District so plant Moran is here to support that work and to make sure those that come on to do Service uh schematic design it's moving in the proper direction Madam excuse me Madam chair discuss yes sorry go ahead you want to discuss that go ahead truste King yeah um okay um I would also add that um I think it would be beneficial if we look into you know once the we get the approval from 12 and uh we look at trying to secure the property so and you know trying to think about someone you know we approved this today you know where the time we live in in the community that we live in and somebody go try to destroy the building the lighted on fire I think it's important um if we do some kind of fencing or securing that building um when we uh approve this and especially in 12d get approved thanks any more comments from the board see no more I want to say something go ahead so thank you very much uh for coming before the board again um I wanted to say outright that I'm I'm very enthusiastic about this this project and it's something that I've been uh behind since its Inception as it's developed into this iteration um I know that that it has been a contentious site within our city and um most of us or a lot of us are aware of the history that's gotten to this point and I am very excited and enthusiastic to see us trying to rectify some of the wrongs of the past moving forward in a very positive expansive beautiful way for this um for this property for the Flint schools for public schools and for the the cultural center um I've always loved the cultural center even as a little kid um it's it's something that sets Flynn apart um from all other cities and the rest of the the country I mean we are really special having the assets that that we we do and we've worked really hard as a community to create generational wealth for our Community with these things that have been afforded to us because of the hard work of workers uh especially GM workers um and Central was designated as the location for the Central High School right we we have a lot of design and a lot of planning that's gone and a lot of thought that's gone into where our schools should be where our neighborhood schools should be um and even though our population is decreased and our enrollment has decreased we're still hopeful that that's going to be um that we're going to turn that around somewhat um the rest of the country has demographic challenges we all face those but we also have um a lot of opportunity because of some of the things that have progressed and developed um within our community and with our with our Partnerships um I I want to thank um everyone who came forward and spoke tonight it's really encouraging to see people um contribute to these meetings in a in a positive way um it's what we've been asking for what we've really desperately needed um and you know I'm I'm um uh very glad to see some some familiar faces um I know you've been up here before and and know that you are being heard you are being listened to um and all the things that have been mentioned are being taken into consideration and um we do want Community input moving forward absolutely and we're we're working as hard as we can to to make that better and better it's a work in progress um we want the best of the newest types of of shiny buildings but we also want to maintain and preserve our legacy and our culture these these facades these buildings um are beautiful um they're incredible so we want to keep as much of that look much of the material as possible at the same time providing all the best we can for our scholars in in our community we want the Best of Both Worlds um and we've been working really hard to try to leverage dollars from Grants from federal sources from State sources from Community partner sources and we've come so far it's it's really exciting to see how far we've come and so I I just want to congratulate you uh the the team um that being said uh I have a couple of points to to just make sure that we're we're good on um because this is this is the spec specific draft that I have right here is I've only been able to see it for a couple of days and so some of the language in there I just want to make sure that we're all on the same page um the PMR fee of $120,000 um is that standard um yes it's $155,000 per month for our fee and that is is um standard for consolidation strategic planning facility Master planning Services um it is a monthly fee so if we're done sooner than the eight months that we're anticipating then you would not pay you will only pay for the time that we worked okay yeah and um part of it is going to be paid from the flank Community Schools do you know does is that coming from our general fund or can you speak to that uh it it would come from our uh general fund and you know we have a fund balance uh it will come from that upfront okay I'll speak that much to it it'll come from that upfront and there is there a reason why it's it's the amount that it is and I guess my question is why is it uh uh 50,000 from a foundation and 70,000 from our general fund well we just wanted to in in our in my conversation with the team we wanted to show that Fint Community Schools will own some of this UPF front um and we did not want the foundation to uh take the brunt of the front work we wanted to show that we are going to invest in this ourselves and do some investment UPF front so remember remember though that the monies we are using all goes into or coming out of the monies we're going to receive for the overall project of the high school so the investment to say we're going to do this upfront was just a good faith effort in US putting our foot forward instead of completely relying on someone else to do the work for us I just I just wanted to ask these questions publicly um because I know that when I first looked at the document they they were questions that I had and I want to just have it all out there um if the M Foundation is paying for a significant portion for 50,000 of this what are the strings attached to that we we don't have any strings I we we don't have any strings no one is asking for buildings no one is asking for Flint to do anything uh I know the wanted it just to be stated because I'm you know I hear things you know out in the public in communities about like why this sudden turn of events what has happened what's been promised what's been happening behind closed doors you know you went to a a retreat and you know it we want to make sure that it's transparent and it's open and it's above board and I want to give an explanation as to why I am now in enthusiastically looking to the m Foundation to partner with us when I've been such a a a large critic in the past so I just wanted to to have that out there um we are still looking for Partnerships um that are partners and I just wanted to say that this I feel is truly a partnership um obviously we have to you know maintain do the work and do our due diligence but I want the the public and the community to be reassured that this is Flint schools and this is this is our project it is Community Driven and Community Based so sorry to be to really pedantic about that but I just wanted it to be to be stated um that the only other thing I have is what does the single point of contact with Flint Community Schools what does that look like that that looks like it depends on uh what it is it might be well I'm the single point of contact let me just say it like that I'm the single point of contact uh working on behalf of what the board has put out as as Vision uh to ensure that the work that's being done by plant Moran gets done properly and it is streamlined instead of working with um eight or nine people they're they're going to be be working through the superintendent okay and and it just is it says you're going to be provide the necessary approvals and facilitate communication but this is still very much board driven and a board decision okay um and then plant morand is going to do one board presentation okay yeah during the schematic design phase but um I do want to iterate um we are part of the committee that will be meeting with the community and listening to the community doing surveys so that we understand the community needs their input so as we develop the design that is being considered as a part of the the future um Middle High School campus okay and then the last thing I had was the escalation PA path do we have a boilerplate agreement for it says we will agree on a suitable excal uh escalation path and resolution is that something that we have that's standard in the contract or yes yes that is standard in the contract that is correct okay yep all right that's thank you very much well we appreciate your questions thank you thank you saying that there's no any more question I do want to make a statement um to The Graduate of the the last one before Central uh got torn down I think it was 2000 I mean Clos I got calls from a couple of a few 12th graders that graduated one was my daughter a few of them was her friends and they're saying the same uh sentiment that the people came in and spoke they love Central and they want to keep that part of it they also said they want us to go in there and look and you know maybe create a wall a hall because they saw somebody went in took pictures and they down in Atlanta and different places um so I think we're on the right track uh and it's good to hear that our young people even though they might be out of town they still concerned about their high school and so I am agreement um with this proposal I have no objection if seeing if there is any more uh disc discussion we should be wrapping this up and getting ready for a roll call vote we all agree send no further discussion the motion to approve action item 21.8 proposal for schismatic design oversight for Flint Community School District new middle middle high school campus board members I call your name please say yes or no secretary Perkins yes trustee boot yes vice president McIntyre yes trustee reliford yes trustee King yes treaser Looney yes myself Mike Neil 7 yes Zer no thank you very much thank [Applause] you board members at this time I would like to invite MSG consultant to join us for the government relation update which one it shouldn't be that long they just update oh we got TR wait a minute oh I didn't know you had him on this he's not on here about we could have I didn't see jci did I skip something I turn [Music] it okay he making good Monday [Music] [Laughter] today proceed good afternoon pce hello thank you board members superintendent uh just wanted to give you an update uh we came on board at uh the end of last year and to say it was like getting shut out of a canyon with lame duck session was uh understatement U but just want to give you an update of of what kind of transpired in lame duck where we got to on behalf of the school which is very impressive actually um and where things are going as far as information yep just for the record could you introduce yourself say who you are and what yes I think that would be sorry jeremi Jeremiah mov with MGS Consultants Omar Sims with MGS consultant and a flint graduate so what do you do for the Flint Board of Education uh we represent the board uh in Lancing uh on behalf of um government uh Affairs we do uh track legislation we go after grants we um fight for Flint and make sure that the money comes back to the city and the schools um and we uh are going to Give It All We Have and we actually uh like I said made a lot of good progress uh in the last month and a half okay thank you proceed good okay um so with that when the last conversation so we started we were going after an Appropriations um and it was a a very tumultuous uh lame duck session that had a lot of ups and downs and ended up with them doing nothing which was quite fr frustrating I think for all all parties uh for sure um but that being said so we originally as we said we're going after an Appropriations for the schools for some of the demolition of some of the the buildings what transpired was is that actually with some of that school consolidation uh Grant we actually got Buy in from the House and Senate leadership and the governor's office to actually um specifically put uh some of those Grant funds to go directly to uh Flint meaning it was going to be named in there right because they're not named we were going to actually it censor it's called boilerplate so it was going to actually go it's going to say Flint Community Schools this consolidation funds will go there um and we actually had it in the budget was ready to go um we had uh at the time it was Senator rivet who's congresswoman rivet now but we had the House and Senate uh both chairs leadership was all bought in on it and uh we worked until after midnight uh at least three of the nights uh doing that and at the end of the day the uh house just couldn't get uh all people there to vote and they left and uh so uh that's what transparent but I wanted to give you an update on that because uh if they would have actually passed uh the bills um we would have had a great success so why to give you an update on that because it was a lot of fast and furious with that now looking forward to this year couple things um one we do now have a uh the house representative flipped it's now Republican uh majority um that being said a couple dates to keep in mind there's the governor's State of the State which is going to be February 26th um session started about a week and a half two weeks ago nothing really has transpired people started producing bills um we talked about uh one of one of the important roles is not only action items and deliverables for the board for the and for the school district but two to keep you apprised of what's transpiring in Lancing that you know about what's going on as far as k through2 um and and among other things that that you know what they're looking to propose for legislation so that you can weigh in on that while they're in the process of creating it as opposed to after they've decided what they want to do um so with that um they're going to be um they're going to be introducing uh bills in the next few weeks they'll start trickling in what what we'll do is we'll comprise a uh categories of different bills we'll summarize all of them we will send them out and then based on your feedback what we want some more information here we like some of the you know we will we will tailor that to what we need to get involved with legislatively right that's going to be transparent exping um the second part of that is is they're going to be selecting committee members so in Lancing right now they're just gearing up like at a snail's pace right now so everything really will kick off after the Governor State of the State which is on the 26th and then we'll probably be be having a um Lancing day for some of the board members superintended to come to Lancing introduce yourself a lot of new members to meet um the best way to be success uccessful is to build a relationship um with some of the the key individuals there so um looking forward to working with the board um in the superintendent to identify what are some um Appropriations that we can go after this year um I said before so the the Appropriations process is something that uh starts to get moving in April and it usually concludes in June um so we have a we have a a little bit of Runway there as far as to figure out what are what what the needs are and what we' like to go after in that regard so um again today was to be brief but to give you an update of the the absolute chaos that transpired in the session uh at the end of the year and um to know that uh we worked Omar and I worked very hard but we were we were very pleasant surprised that you had a lot of allies in Lancing believe it or not that were actually very positive very supportive and wanted to help um so I'll pause for questions I any question boy chair proceed yeah uh thanks for your work in lanon uh I think in the circle of control we couldn't stop the house from imploding no yeah so thank you for that again um there's no secret that there's about a billion dollars of surplus in the state budget and probably every interest group bar be lobbyists and their clients are asking for a cut of that pie they will be yes yeah so I would just say continue to advocate for us um because I mean the proofs in the pudding right we're repurposing schools reducing our overhead we're looking at additional revenues when it comes to enrollment possibly shared services Etc you know we're leveraging their money with other money sources to make our own Capital Improvements so we're not asking the state to cover it all you just saw that we put skin the game for hiring plant morand so we're not just spending the money that we get from the federal government from the state from philanthropy we're investing it for the next 20 30 40 years and if they need to come see brown h Homes if they need to come see the vacant lot retor Washington down with money that should have been spent on children or if they want to come see mckenley Northern literally see through Stewart or Bryant on Pearson Road then they're more than welcome to and there those Republicans Democrats and folks who work for governor Whitmer so we're open to partnership like my colleague trusty McIntyre said but I mean our numbers our phones go off daily emails go off daily and they should be about educating children or hey we want to improve this tutoring services for me at least you know nine out of 10 times it's about an abandoned building by their home sure or someone doing some kind of activity where that should be their vacant lot or part of that Community that's beneficial so again just keep that in mind and thank you so much for your work yeah and thank you for and actually to to add more on to that so we actually brought some members of the legislature down uh in December right and and and thank you for superintendent for the board for actually moving very quickly because it was a very fast-paced and to your point you just made when they when they came when the when uh Senator came down and a couple others came down and they saw what the board is doing and they saw that what the money that you were asking for for the repurposing what they're doing they were and when they came back to Lancy and explained that to their other members they were they were pleasantly surprised and they were um very happy to see that like they were like Republicans and the Democrats both were they're like well there's well this is this fantastic so this is something we can get behind so to your point when that was actually um for the lame session we actually had Republicans and Democrats support of that so that tells you that you're doing a phenomenal job truly um because uh to get uh that that big group of of Republicans and Democrats bipartisan supporting the efforts of the Flint schools is fantastic it really isation trust McIntyre yeah so I just wanted to to say thank you um I'm you know to use that word relieved to put ourselves in your very competent capable hands and your knowledge and expertise is just I I'm just like I'm overwhelmed with the relief because we need somebody in our corner to be fighting with us this is you know something that is um in my opinion is a necessary evil you probably love this kind of work but I can't stand it and I it it makes me very angry so I'm glad to hand it over um you know and I'm encouraged by the the forward momentum that we've that we've made um and I think you your track record speaks for itself and um yeah I'm just very very grateful I still haven't recovered from the adopt an amend nonsense in 2016 so my hats off to you um for dealing with legislature especially in the lame duck session like I said I it makes me very angry and I'm glad to have experts who are helping us uh navigate our way through this so again anything that we can do as a board um this is a in my mind a no-brainer partnership and let's just keep moving forward and and no uh the I know what you guys I mean I don't know the details of what you guys have been going through um during lame duck but but you really don't have to you know provide an explanation for why things didn't work or why they did I get it yeah I get it and it's it's like I said thank God you guys are dealing with it and not me because I would be you know but I really appreciate the work that you're doing keep just doing what you do and and we'll keep our fingers crossed thank you we got we got our gloves laced up for you I guess I have the final remarks I want to thank you um for bringing the different delegates and the Senators she had just won the election uh we had just brought you guys on board and you made it happen uh it was the last minute but they came to the administration building and uh gave us ideas and stuff and and what we was asking for I think we also going to in they probably going to include that in the Boiling Pot but um I appreciate you opening that door because I don't think we could have gotten them at the table very seldom you can get senators and Congress right after the election hard to come and say Hey I want to walk mckenley I want to go see but the weather was bad and uh but they was willing because she was excited when uh we made that called and said this is what I need to do I need these four buildings torn down and they came here immediately because that's what we ask you to do so keep up the good work hope to see you in DC um you have any more thing you want to say Mr Omar you've been kind of quiet so and once you speak we we have an attorney that's on the clock and he's doing very well right about now so uh go ahead and speak I just say want to say thank you for giving us this opportunity and I do look forward to we do look forward to representing you and in DC we expect to meet with some of our legislators in DC to talk about work of flint and the word in L this is a new Flint team you know when I when I jness County delegation of Democrats and Republicans and Jeremiah already said that's Madam chair yes I makeal to approve 21.9 support who supported it has been promply moving properly moved in second is there any discussion Madam chair yes um I got to say real quickly there's trustees in this board new and more veteran and some who have since transition from the board and they've been talking about this for years I didn't know about it until I really read through the legal documents and heard the the commentary I'm just glad we're putting this be past us I wish it was a bit better for us but you know I think it's a good direction and we just got to close that door and keep it closed for a while so thank you any more discussion um by me being a new board member uh mcy had her hand in you thank you okay um thank you for your due diligence and all the work and and and the work of explaining this very complicated situation um I share trusty Luna's dismay at what's transpired and um it's just an unfortunate situation that we inherited and um but I I want to just State publicly that I am so disappointed and disgusted with Johnson Controls and I will be glad if we never have to see them ever ever again and shame on them for um their participation with with a school district and the way that they they handled their business it while it may have been legal it was not ethical or moral and information remember we have a confidential and non dispar agreement here that was in closed door and I think okay well then I I apologize and yeah I'm going to have to backtrack some of that I am yeah all right trusty thank you for that boo thank you okay I remember that name uh back back in 2022 so I probably need to restrain from saying asking any questions but I just needed to okay yeah go ahead Mr if I can just so so our city uh gave us bonds and uh to do some HVAC work uh jci was brought on to do that work we had some complications in between and now we're at the place with that money this is not monies that is going to be utilized for anything except for finishing out that work okay and it is under what we have left uh to pay so this is uh the best way to move that forward to end that work uh from the bond that uh the community uh has given us the opportunity to to utilize funds for so they got obligated to complete the work or they do have to complet everything's uh yep all the work is completed okay uh we're just completing our portion of the payment to them okay gotcha yes yeah if I could just add it's a long time coming and uh it's nice to close this chapter um yes it you know it's a compromise um but but it provides the district some years that um our academic team and our teachers have the opportunity to have a calendar this early to start planning for the school year so hats off to you board for approving this and getting this done so thank you very much welcome board member in your package is information thank you very much sorry is information regarding retirement and resignation do any board member have any questions send on question board member and your pack is a vartech monthly update for December do any board member have any questions see any no questions or comment do any board member have any comments or remarks before we are joined Madam chair yes yeah I have a couple comments um first off I want to give a shout out to my old high school principal uh Mr art winoff in the back for those of you who don't know Mr winoff he has a deep history uh with Flint Community Schools he used to be a Community School director uh did a lot of work with Atwood Stadium Flint Sports and I've known him for at least 20 years um this guy really does a lot for the community he literally feeds people keeps folks warm I'm not I don't want to give out his business too much but he literally has giv people transportation and more ways in one to get to where they need to be at and at a young man at 50 years old I think that's a lot and I know during these cold times he's doing some good work too keeping people you know alive and feeling good about themselves so thank you Mr wisloff um second I just want to reiterate to my colleagues and to the community that there's a reason um why this board including superintendent Jones and his team and the union leadership have been able to do some of these things uh over the last year or so right um some of it hasn't been easy in particular repurposing schools uh the backpack issue if you look across the country states and districts are looking at the cell phone being you know taking out the Clash room I think for tonight's purposes uh we're talking about redeveloping a high school that's been shuted for over 10 years if not 15 years that doesn't happen in a vacuum for us to do that we have to have a cohesive team that's focused on governance and kids if you're focused on personalities fighting past fights ETC number one no one's going to give us a damn dime but more importantly no one's going to trust us to really deliver on that same note let me be clear we have a lot of challenges that we have to face when it comes to our structural deficit effectively repurposing schools working with our unions to make sure that they feel that they're in a right place I mean I can go on for a long time about all the serious challenges that we have to address as a board we know that it's been decades in the making but again you know we're rolling up our sleeve we're showing that we can do this and everyone on this board has given you know valuable feedback um and I will say one last thing I was serious about working with the skill trade specifically the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers they're a great Union they've done some great works at our schools and I would love to partner with them as a district on looking at some of these vacant Lots I know my colleague trust rord mentioned put some playgrounds down at some of these vacant lots that we've torn down schools you to sit at I think that would be a good show of partnership to work on that so that the people who live around those vacant Lots specifically I'm thinking of Washington you know it's a it's a green field right now but that could quickly become a place where folks begin to dump stuff at if there's like a playground there or like a walking Track Circle I think that would improve the quality of life of students and families in those kinds of areas and those are my comments thank you have a good night you any more comments from the board the board of education will hold his next meeting on Wednesday February 12th at 6:30 p.m. here at ala seeing no further vision of the board I declare the regular board meeting are joined at 8:09
