stand and join us for the pledge of allegiance to our flag pledge Ali to the flag of the United States of America to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible jice Miss lemon will you call the rooll for us please director aari pres director Bentley pres director Campos spitzy presid director Mash Pres director Matthews present director Norwood present director Sullivan all board members present thank you Miss lemon well again Welcome to our meeting tonight um first off I want to extend our apologies for starting this meeting uh so late we uh we know that some of you have been waiting on us to to get going and uh we just it was something that could not be helped we had business we had to finish and could not finish that business by 6:00 so my apologies uh for that but we'll keep our introductory three remarks um very brief I do want to let you know that in our work session tonight that we were audited we are audited every year uh we um and every year we receive a clean audit an unmodified opinion and that is what we received again this year and so we want to say again as we do always uh extend our congrat congratulations to our finance team uh to Miss Megan sponsler and to Mandy hiok uh who who lead those those efforts and uh we have a tremendous Finance team they they're we have a lot of superstars in this District but they're some of our our greatest stars and they keep uh keep us running um the way we should be running and and that's a great that's a great comfort as a board member it should be a great comfort uh for our community to know that our finance team uh does what they do so so well and so congratulations uh to them we also get to congratulate uh again our our superintendent tonight Dr dearra pilch and she's going to be receiving uh an award tonight and so we're glad that you were here with us to to view that and to watch that and uh also though we we have a lot of people I think she wants to recognize I saw I saw a lot of our students out in the in the hall so we want to get moving on that and I won't I won't say anything more but Dr pilow will turn it turn it over to you for your superintendent's honor rooll did we approve the agenda oh oh I get to do SUB on Roll first okay I'm out of syn sorry guys um yes let's um we we do want to recognize our fall athletes um for their their exemplary performance this fall from each of our three high schools and so um Mr osus this is superintendent the secondary will come up and we'll introduce each of the athletic uh director at each high school and then they will they will honor their athletes and I'm I'm so grateful to have so many parents and family members here with us tonight as we get to recognize these fine young people of the board of Dr pilt shabby Anthony osus assistant superintendent of secretary and k8s I also have the privilege of supporting Athletics um we know research says that if students are involved in something at school they just do better and so we um we know that sometimes when you get the right team you could do great things such as go to state um and participate with your team or even win state so tonight we're going to recognize uh members of different teams from different schools that um that had the honor to go to State and even now a state champion and so at first I'd like to introduce as I'd like to first thank as he comes in Chris kleene who is my District athletic director and so without Chris Klein a lot of this doesn't happen so Chris thank you for all your work and as and as we roll in central I'd like to introduce to you Mr Sean scribit who is the athletic director at Central High School uh president of Matthew's Board of Education Dr PCH thank you for giving us a moment to celebrate uh what's greatest about gy Central and that's our students and so uh some pretty awesome accomplishments for gy Central this fall um unfortunately our boys soccer team wasn't able to make it tonight but they made it to our second round of the chassa playoffs uh played in a blizzard down in Eric Academy and lost uh but tremendous success for our program uh hopefully we'll celebrate them in the spring um but I'd like to bring up first um Barb Johnson and our cross country team Barb would like to speak a little bit about uh Nico Sanchez and Danny good evening thank you so much for having us um this is such the kids really do appreciate this and I know it's something that you've just started here the last year or so and so please continue to do it because it it really does mean a lot to them I'd like to start out by thanking um Sean scribbick he's a tremendous athletic director uh great administrator in our building and we couldn't do what we do without his support and I have two very fabulous assistant coaches Kirk Johnson who's here with me this evening and then Cody spe who was unable to make it and those guys are pretty spectacular well but as well but we are here to honor Nico Sanchez and Danny Rodriguez Amora is this when you want them to stand in the middle yeah so just to tell you a little bit about these young men they're both seniors at gy Central High School and um I will tell you that I've coached a lot of different sports and cross country is really in it is the hardest sport because what we do for fun is what people in other sports do for punishment and that is run and it's you know we run we throw up we hurt and then we turn around and we run again and I you know and they've got coaches going but you need to run faster and um so what these two gentlemen represent is just a tremendous amount of heart we have a motto at gy Central Pride class and dignity they also embody every part of those three words every time we're out representing gy Central representing school district 6 these these two gentlemen are class acts um I get feedback from other coaches constantly about how uh polite and respectful our our kids are uh right after these two qualified for the state meet we stopped by Wendy's there had been a bunch of stuff spilled on the floor and without hesitation with their Metals around their neck they the two of them without me asking we're on the floor cleaning it up um and and they just do that that's just who they are so not only are they tremendous athletes but they are pretty fabulous human beings as well and so they both ran lights out uh Nico qualified last year and he actually placed higher better this year and ran faster this year and Danny when we were at regionals we were like dude you got to get 15th and uh we were like don't let anybody pass you and he's like he was just running his little heart out um to be able to qualify and then he turned around and had a fabulous meet down there in collar Springs as well so thank you for having us still there there we're going to put all of C out here and then we'll get and our final program we'd like to celebrate tonight um special shout out to Kent Henson uh formerly the cats didn't have a home for our softball team uh and through the work of Kent Henson we were able to get a softball field at toon which is awesome we have our home we get to utilize that every day and so thank you Kent Henson for doing that for our program um this year uh she's not new to Central Alisa Davis took over the program she' formerly been an assistant coach uh for the girl soccer program um and she's also taking on our finance secretary position this year and has done a tremendous job uh took seven seven or eight freshmen uh on her roster this year and qualified for the postseason so I'll let her kind of give you a synopsis of of her season and I'm Alisa Davis and I coach for gly central for softball and for soccer um and also Sean is absolutely amazing he has helped us out so much with different obstacles throughout the year and for the season and um and um but yes so we had seven freshmen this year and all different types of levels we had girls that have played Club ball for a long time and we had ones that barely touched the ball in June so we um started off slow obviously in the in the summertime but when we all got together a lot of my upper classman stepped up and really showed them what um how to really pull through and be leaders when it comes to kiddos that have never touched a ball before so I was really extremely proud of them um I do have some representatives of my team were here um love these girls they are accountable they held study sessions to make sure everyone was eligible they were on um anyone that was new that didn't know what the expectations were and we had some pretty tough expectations um I do I do have a background in softball both in high school and for college as well so teaching them the Love of the Game and teaching them that accountability Factor was huge um especially with our girls that want to move on to different levels and what they're going to run into expectation wise because the point of them moving on is for them to succeed and not back slide back down um and when they're out of you know out of my care as far as coaching wise keeping those same expectations for themselves and holding their their team accountable because it is a family and when they get into college that's a year- round family so that's it's not just a season based thing um but I have to say the funniest thing and the most nerve-wracking part of this was when we were waiting to be placed in playoffs and it was it was hilarious because we had um a certain number of teams will go and we were actually at the at we were actually close to the very end of that and every time we would change in status I would get about 15 texts saying that our status changed and where we're at and so they were so excited to be um put into playoffs and as soon as that happened we had an emergency study H to make sure everyone was eligible so and you know and they would even do it on a weekend because we all had to get everything in so um very very proud of these girls they uh you know dealt with me the entire time I had two amazing coaches uh coach Chuck loose over here and Eden Hartman and they kept me mentally together a lot of those times when it came to who we're playing against what we're doing get getting the correct stats in um an amazing manager over here Hunter Johnson and um they are very very proud to be here and I'm very very proud of our girls thank you already good job cats congratulations good job good job thank you good job good job good job guys good job run run good job and I have uh athletic director JJ baren here to talk about the Su successes from gly West hello and uh thank you again for giving us this opportunity to showcase our activities and sports um here at gy West um so we're going to start off with our state qualifying softball team um I think they went 20 and seven on the season and I was going to let Coach Rivera kind of go into a little more detail of of how they did I'm actually going to hand the mic off to Nick I'm just kidding um hi I'm H Rivera I'm the head topball coach at gy West High School and we had an incredible season this year like JJ said we did go I'm 20 and seven and we qualified for the 5A state tournament so that was a huge accomplishment um in League um we played in a pretty competitive league um and we were able to have three First Team all conference with Elise hok Ayanna Martinez um and Madison dult um and then Elise hiok rounded out that um all league on nominations with a pitcher of the year so that was pretty huge um and and then we got two second team nominations um with Hayden Ashley and who am I missing Josie no Lucy Sten Roy and then we got three honorable honorable mentions with Josie Gibson Brena Sandoval and Arena Hulan so we are very well represented in our league um and so we hit above 300 as a team had about 38 home runs um and just had a really great competitive season this year um so yeah all right um I've got one more group uh to talk about and that's our choir and our Orchestra um so we've got our qualifiers for choir um and unfortunately Miss Conor wasn't able to make tonight but uh we've got Sarah um arcott Fatima alone Harrison Barnett and Kennedy Adler and then we just found out infor he wasn't able to make it but we found out today that Calvin Long also qualified for All State Orchestra so congratulations [Applause] good job yeah front or back youth pick how are you guys thank you guys thank you thank you good job congratulations who had the longest home good job congratulations and to share successes from Northridge this year we have Jeff Collins the ad at Northridge hi good evening thanks for having us again um want to go over a few things I'm sorry we don't have all of our kids here tonight they're busy and doing other things but uh wanted to start with our softball team first they made it to the final 16 this year first time they've made it that far since 2008 we had two kids all state honorable mention Bo tles and Bailey McGee Bo's a sophomore Bailey's a senior so congratul ations to girl softball another first in ha while Liam brat qualified for the state cross country meet uh Liam's an exceptional leader and a very very hard worker so congratulations to Liam we had two boys golfers qualify for state and Grand Junction uh Tony gindo didn't Place uh qualified for the first time Everett Lewis is new to us this year finished 13th so he is technically second Team all state is a golfer so sorry they couldn't make it both are out of state um boys soccer qualified for the postseason again I think we're on a streak a few years now aren't we yes yeah um couldn't get through the first round unfortunately but still a really really good year it's always good when we get those guys in the post season so good job boys soccer and then our unified bowling team last month or so has been pretty cool uh we won the league event and then they won regionals and then right before thanks giving they won uh the state tournament so congratulations sorry bab go ahead um it it just means a lot to be able to bring a State title back home to Northridge and it means even more to be able to do it with all these [Applause] guys I had to apologize to the Amy I left the uh the trophy at school I'm sorry good job guys I take it that's all of our students uh that are being honor honored tonight and so uh congratulations to all of them uh for their hard work this this semester that's that's quite a number of students and quite a lot of accomplishments that we just got to see and so um congrats to them all and and best wishes as they as they take exams uh starting this week so uh next on our agenda is the approval of the agenda so we'll need an act this is an action item and we'll need a motion I'm move that the Board of Education of gy Evan school district 6 approves the agenda as presented second you both any discussion on the agenda I don't see any so miss lemon will you give us a vote director Zari I director Bentley hi director Campos spitzy hi director Mash hi director Matthews hi director Norwood hi director Sullivan hi motion carries 7-0 thank you Miss lemon next on our agenda is our Council of student Representatives report but we have uh let our Council of student Representatives go study for their exams so we decided uh as we were running late it was not not in their best interest to be with us but to be at their homes and uh doing what they need to do and so we're going to we're going to skip our Council of student Representatives report and move right on to our case superintendent of the Year recognition so I want to invite uh our case executive Mr Brett miles uh to come and make this presentation to us and you can make this presentation and then our imagine our board members might have something to say about this as well thank you for making time for us tonight my name is Brett miles and I'm the executive director of the Colorado Association of School Executives so that is the um Statewide advocacy and membership organization of superintendant CFOs HR directors Tech directors your your administrative team throughout your District um every year we have the great Fortune to recognize Excellence across our state um with many different Awards and always um very special on this list is where we get a chance to recognize our superintendent of the Year award these Awards come in many different ways and um as in this case most often um come with staff and and board coming together and rallying around a nomination then each of the applicants if they choose to pursue um have a whole bunch of homework to do and a bunch of data to submit um examples um portfolios of work and then we get to an extensive interview process This was um in my 5 years of being here at case this is was our most competitive by far we um vastly exceeded the most applications that we'd ever had and we went through this um process as we went through um and which is no big surprise to anyone here but one thing that's really you know special about this as you hear these stories um the superintendent is the superintendent of the students you know obviously and and obviously of of the staff and then we hear stories uh you're the superintendent of a community and of a business sector and another thing that's very um valued um through case as we do this process um a leader among peers and Dr pilch is recognized across the state um as a leader among her PE peers and uh as she noticed and the board noticed probably this week um during the their convention at the Schoolboard convention um and outpouring I saw her stopped numerous times from people all across the state um to give a hug because her reputation proceeds and the work that has been accomplished here in gy under her leadership um is an example set across the state people look to you um and to look to this work here um is how things are supposed to get accomplished so at this point Dr pilch gets to represent us and we get to submit her name for the national superintendent of the year every state um gets to submit one name and that will be decided in March and so um we feel like we have a wonderful representative for the state of Colorado and um we are here to say congratulations and thank you for everything that you do congratulations and we know this is a a team sport um this is something that every superintendent recognizes the support that they get from their board um as well and so while someday uh down the road Dr pilch may take her recognition with her um on behalf of case we would like to leave you a permanent recognition for this room um so years to come um everyone knows of of the great work that you have done Dr pilch and that you guys have accomplished together so um Bo president Matthews we'd like to offer this to you Dr pilch I'm not going to let you off that easily uh I seem to remember I got an award recently and you invited me to go to the podium to to say some words of of acknowledgement um and I would invite you to do the same Podium I had to go to the podium go to the podium it's why the podium goes up and down um I I did not prepare something to say tonight um I I it's an honor to hear the things you said Brett um it truly is an honor and it's an honor uh when your peers recognize the work that you've done um and I I feel honored that my peers here in Colorado former superintendent of the years and another superintendent of the state um select me to represent Colorado um but what I feel most honored about is that I get to do this for the gy Evans school district 6 Community uh we have worked so hard all of us our communities worked really hard you as a board have worked so tremendously hard and and the boards before you um have been dedicated and and caring and thoughtful board members um just as you all are in the work that you do leading the district and the staff is truly remarkable no one gets a recognition like this uh without the kind of staff that we have here in district 6 and the and the hard work of our families and our students and the commitment of the community and the community leaders um that's what has allowed us to pass sponds to Mill Levy overrides and has allowed us to build a strategic plan that we can all get behind and really know that we're making a difference in the lives of students here in our community and and that's what it's all about at the end of the day is making this the best place we can for the children who we serve every single day and um I love to do what I get to do I'm I'm honored to get to do it and to serve this community and to serve our staff and our families and our remarkable students some of whom you got to see tonight so thank you thank you for the honor thank you for the recognition we are going to do a celebration here in the district on January 14th that will be open to the public I guess is what we're saying um but we will do a celebration here um at zo's on January 14th and um have some opportunity to come together and celebrate together um thank you again and thank you to my staff who every single one of my cabinet members helped on this application uh it it was over 70 pages when we were done and it it required a lot of proof reading a lot of a lot of getting it exactly right and telling our story exactly like it is and um Teresa and the rest of the comms team uh did a beautiful video for me and then other you know we submitted other videos that we've used for other things in the past and so I think that's a lot of my packet looking um favorable as it did Mr miles that I had a great team working with me and I'll just tell you one more thing I was nominated once before um in 2017 I think or 18 and I didn't get it and this time around I'm working and working and working and my husband says to me gosh JRA you didn't work near this hard last time on the application I said I know and I didn't win either so um so anyway it is a it was a lift and it it was every bit worth it because I got to reminisce on all the amazing work that we've gotten to do over nearly a decade here in district 6 and um that was very rewarding for me to actually see what we've done and to get to talk about it so thank you to all of you I appreciate your support and I appreciate all you do for the students here in district 6 [Applause] before we move on are there any comments from board members and I see Dr ke spitsy has some so first I was going to say that none of us can take credit for finding you and bringing you to gy Evans because it happened nine years ago which predates all of our um uh tenure on the board so the the board who selected you nine years ago kudos to them too for bringing you to us um we are so so so fortunate we know that we are so so so fortunate um that you're here and that you're committing more years to to us and to the district um I uh have the distinct pleasure of getting to know Dr pilch on a more personal level um being on her board and I I've known you for two years and just um surprised and impressed with you more and more every time we meet really um little details about about Dr pill's life that stand out to me um one is that she was raised in a trailer park and um she really understands the lives um has shared lived experiences with so many of our kids um she shared with us pretty recently that she helped pay through college by being a flagger which that's like a new a new gem for me just imagining Dr pilch um on the highway for hours um practicing her lines to keep herself entertained um she often talks to our leadership and tells them that we are educating our children out of poverty um a line that uh just has has stuck with me and um she's she's a listener she she leads through relationships um and she really she she's the type of leader that you can trust that so many people can trust she she brings you know she makes that political divide that exists in our community so much smaller um because she helps our community focus on what is best for our children um and so I just want to congratulate you I think not one of us here was surprised that you got that award but we did get to brag about you a lot this last week and um I'm just excited to see what more is to come thank you Dr Kus spitsy next Mr Bentley yeah one of the things that stood out this this week is we got to spend some time in casby and it's one of the things that I've kind of realized as my as I served these three years on the board is I came in kind of not happy with common core math as as a lot of people are and kind of hesitant with Co and everything going on but when I got into the buildings and got to know the teachers and the administration the principles have commented on how how much the kids look up to those people and how much those people obviously and undeniably just love the kids and then did you like to hear your stories this year at dinner um and and you basically giving us your highlight reel of of your you know your favorite moments as a as a in the education system and and they were all centered on a special kid and and it just made me realize that through your leadership and your love of children it's spilling over and you're leading from you know in a trickle down fashion of of love and I think that's what you know I know that's a big part of your guys' success outside of your undeniably great leadership it's it's the love that you guys have for children and I and I don't think that that is a a tangible thing that you can hire in somebody and and I don't know if we got lucky to get that in you or if those other uh board members seen that but I'm sure glad that they they took that chance on you and brought you in cuz it's it is wonderful to watch thank you Mr Bentley Mr oari I've known Dr pilch for a number of years and uh not just as a school board member but as a staff member in the schools and I I often tell people when they ask me so what is it about Dr pilch uh that you find so outstanding and it really just boils down to a very simple statement for years and years in school district 6 we had a philosophy of no we can't do this or we can't do that and she has come in from square one I remember her talking to the Grey Central parents almost immediately after she had been hired and she turned that no we can't into the yes we can statement and that is stuck with the district and obviously we've had a lot of positive initiatives because of it so thank you again Dr BS for everything you've done vice president MH I Echo everything that's been said like wow you are really articulate folks here that can say beautiful things about you um I think just what I was thinking is um there's not a lot of leaders who are really good at getting things done and the administrative side and also very empathetic and and personable um one of the keynote speakers at casby was talking about carrying leadership and I feel like that is one of your strengths um it seems that you always listen well try to understand where the person is coming from and I think that's what um makes it so that you can build such a great team and have um so much success so I uh Michael always said that he saw the leadership that you have and he wanted to get you know as near to that as he could and and I'm so glad that I got to get to do that as well Mr no first of all congratulations Dr pilch having worked under previous administrations in the district and then working under you as a teacher and now getting the opportunity to work with you um I've seen a big difference in attitude in the district so I think a lot of that is attributed to you and I do want to say I was actually at State Deca the night that you got hired was it February and I got a text and I got a whole bunch of text saying that you were hired and I think that was a great step for the district and I do want to say too that um you're very visible in the community you represent this District not only in our community but throughout the state so this honor is well deserved and I've said it before you're like the Energizer Bunny you just keep going and going and going and you're involved in everything and I think that's a very big tribute to you I don't know really if I can say anything that hasn't already been said um certainly this is this is welld deserved and and even overdue and um so proud for you and proud of you that Dr bch that you received this honor and it it certainly has been one of the uh one of the great educational opportunities of my life to get to work so closely with you um but our students come first we always say that and we mean that and I think the greatest thing I can say is that our students are better served because you were here our students have more opportunities because you were here and our students have a brighter future because you're our super so we're we're very happy for you and and Overjoyed that you were receiving this on because it is well deserved you can certainly say something else uh thank you to all of you for your comments um I I want you to know that I I am where I am because of amazing mentors and leaders who I've looked up to many of whom are you all and the former board members the board members who hired me and coached me into this job I'm so grateful to them and hope we get to celebrate with them on the 14th and and I want to say thank you again to to Brett miles and Arlene for driving up tonight and being here and for all the kind words you said Brett about me uh you've been a longtime friend and colleague and mentor to me and I I thank you for that thank you thank you and with that piece of business concluded I'm I'm going to turn it back over to you Dr pilch for the super the superintendence report well did you know I just got recognized as the 2025 superintendent of the year um so exciting thank you um I do I again thank you for the recognition uh thank you for the appreciation and thank you to to my cabinet team especially and our district leadership team who who work with our cabinet get so many amazing things done here in district 6 so we're getting ready to go into winter break here in just a little over a week and a half two weeks uh we'll go into our winter break and I just want to remind family and staff as you go into the winter break and especially uh those of you who who have children and grandchildren and nieces and nephews you'll be spending time with that it's really a a time to to to remind our children how much we we love them and care about them and we support them and and that we are here for them I think holidays can be really hard for a lot of families I know uh growing up a lot of times the holidays were hard for my family and I might be anxious about going on winter break um and when I'd come back I might have been a bit honorer than I was before I left and so I think we have students like that as well and so love them up uh read books together love them up play outside a little bit and we'll see you back in January and then I'd also like to ask our families if if people are watching or listening or if uh we can get it in the our little news bite we'd like to ask our families to take some time over um the next couple weeks and make sure that we have accurate information in Infinite Campus we're finding that we don't have um we may not have an emergency contract for all of our children or we may not have current cell phone numbers um and address information so please take some time make sure that we have correct information in Infinite Campus should we need to get a hold of you moms and dads and grandmas and grandpas and guardians of our children and um so that we know the best way to reach you and and and who else might be able to come um and take your children from school or not so thank you for that and um have a great holiday season and we'll see you after the new year thank you Dr PCH next on our agenda is our public participation as a board we welcome the comments of community members oh oh we don't have our we don't have our one speaker well no I I won't read all that then uh uh I did not realize that that our speaker had left so it does not appear that there are any speakers who have signed up for public participation but we're always glad to have you speak if you would like to speak to our board you can sign up in advance you just need to sign up by 12:00 on uh on the Monday of the board meeting so um we'll move right along to our consent agenda and this is an action item that needs a motion I move that the Board of Education of gev and school district 6 approves items as presented on the consent agenda and authorizes the officers to sign any and all contracts second thank you both any discussion on the consent agenda I don't see any so miss lemon will you give us a vote please director aari I director Bentley I director Campos spitzy I director Mash I director Matthews I director Norwood I director Sullivan hi motion carry 70 thank you Miss lemon next on our agenda is review and takes action on superintendent's denial of enrollment of students a through F I move to affirm the superintendent's November 26 2024 decision that students AF be denied enrollment in Weld County School District number six but modify the decision to take effect on May 23rd 2025 the board secretary is directed to serve the determination on Appeal on the students parents via hand delivery or certified mail return receipt requested second thank you both we'll open this up for discussion is there any question uh on this I want to remind our board members though while we can discuss this uh we do not need to when we talk about students we don't need to refer to a family or to students by name they are students a through F and I would encourage us not even to to mention a school by name uh but simply um State what you what you believe without uh making any any comments toward um toward the family or to the particulars in this this matter Mr Bentley yeah um it's kind of an unfortunate series of events where I just felt that due to some dishonesty via the parents that some kids were put in in an awkward situation and we just felt strongly that this was the right decision going forward and and we we do uphold the superintendent's decision um we want to I I want to reiterate that we we definitely agree with her it just it was really hard to to see it put kids in a in a position that might be you know not the the best case you know as Michael said earlier we we serve the kids and and so we we really had that in our Forefront of our minds and and and it was nothing more than trying to do what was best for the kids so disappointed for sure in the in in the events that transpired but happy that we could kind of find a happy medium and and and a path forward any other comments questions from board members I'll just uh I will say uh I it's not often that I I vote against a motion often because I as the president I get to to uh direct which actions are coming before before the board and so um but I I will be voting against this one and I I certainly understand the compassion of my fellow board members and and the desire to to serve students and um but but I do believe that we're entrusted by this community to serve a particular 23,000 or just under that students and it's uh that's what we've been entrusted to do as a as a school district that's where where our focus is those are our kids those 23,000 and it became very clear year uh and what we what we saw that these students uh a through f are are not part of that 23,000 students that do not live in the school district and because their parents um acted in the way they did um opportunities were taken opportunities to have their first choice of school were taken away from from some of our students and so while I while I appreciate the compassion of my fellow board members um I I question the wisdom of allowing um allowing people to uh to go around our policies and state law and uh and simply uh not hold them responsible uh as soon as we can um which I believe should be um the original recommendation to us on on January 1st and so uh so I'll be voting against this Miss Mash um I think just a few questions came up when we weren't able to ask them so um and and maybe you sort of answered it I wondered if um if anyone could answer just why the January first date was chosen as opposed to finishing out the school year and well uh I well I I supported that recommendation of the hearing officer and I supported it because um really as a district we've been investigating this and come back with this family multiple times um making them aware that we were aware they were not living in the district and that their children needed to be served in their home district and it really has just taken this long to do that and I don't think I mean it is a natural break at semester now is a natural time for the school change I do not think that leaving at the end of the year will be easier for the children than it is now I I think you very well may be facing the very same decision in six months that you're facing right now um quite frankly um because I don't I don't think the decision gets easier in a few months I think it gets harder and more relationships are made in that amount of time um I do think it's unfortunate it's unfortunate that uh the family had um experiences in their former District that caused them to not want to return to that District but that is their homeschool of attendance and and um I too looked for a way to try to make an exception um I did I'm looking to my team because I I I went through several iterations of how could I make an exception here because I I do believe we probably are better prepared to meet the needs of of these children um children with some you know with some significant needs I believe we probably are better at that than many of our neighboring districts um and and our schools are overc capacity and and this school in particular is significantly over capacity and so for five seats to be taken um unfairly I I I just couldn't find a way around it and I started when I started first learning about this in in late fall I start I tried to find a way to to make it work for the family to be able to stay and to uphold policy and to not have um other families who we have said no to or we've had a hearing for and had leave um wonder why I made an exception for this family but not for them and so I I couldn't I couldn't find a compromise um and I I I respect you all um it was appealed to you all to consider and um your decision will stand well I I was kind of on the fence I you know it is really hard when you have sometimes it's hard to make an objective decision sometimes when there's you know emotions from from the folks involved um but I do trust the process and it makes a lot of sense that we need to hold it up in a just manner um because potentially we could have what about this case or that case or um you know and yes it's absolutely unfortun that the kids are kind of caught in the in the middle in the situation but um I think I will be also voting no on this motion Mr aori I've spent my entire career in education with the statement kids come first and adults in kids' lives make decisions that negatively impact kids' lives and if I'm put in a situation where I can remedy that on behalf of the kids so their lives move forward with no interruptions at least for a short period of time uh then I would do so that's why I will be voting yes on the motion Dr Campos spit um similarly I I understand that um that rules were broken policy was broken and um that is why we are affirming the superintendent's decision that these students be denied enrollment um but I do think that while winter break is a natural break it's only a few weeks as opposed to three months in the summer to allow this family to regroup and uh um and there there's other details where you know the parents are not going through the easiest of times right now I'm hopeful that in in May June um the family situation will will be more stable and that transition will be easier for the kids any other questions or comments from board members I'm not seeing any Sor Miss lemon will you give us a vote please director isari I director Bentley hi director Campos spitzy hi director mesh no director Matthews no director Norwood I director Sullivan I motion carries 52 thank you Miss lemon next on our agenda is our first read of policy exhibit bc- board protocols and because this is a first read this is not an action item there's nothing that that we need to do uh but I will simply uh say that this is uh these board protocols or board protocols we have been following for for um I don't even know how long perhaps as long as I've been on on the board but we've never actually put them into board policy as an exhibit and so um Mr Brett miles that that every everyone just got to meet was a facilitator for our board at at our casby convention and so we we talked about these and um suggested to him could we put these as an exhibit so that uh so that these are in our board policy and he said that sounds like a good idea we talked about that some more and so we are now uh bringing that to um to be in our our board our board protocols to actually be in our policies and so uh that's what that is that's all that that is we uh will vote on that then the next board meeting it's the second read any other questions comments from board members on this one I don't see any well that is the last piece of business that we have tonight um we want to wish uh our especially our high school students all those students that you guys got to see tonight uh they're all going to take exam so best wishes to them as as they take exams best wishes to uh to all of those students who are performing this week and then best wishes to our teachers especially our elementary teachers that have to get kids all the way to Christmas break so uh best wishes and happy holidays to everyone this meeting is a jerk [Music] [Music] n [Music] [Music] la
