and about our school district are the number of choices uh that you have there are any number of schools that that you can open en roll to uh each each of our high schools does something just a little bit different so you might want to open and roll to gy West and take advantage of the IB program or to gy Central and take advantage of the arts program or to uh Northridge and take advantage of their stem program or to uh ECA and uh that is all open enrollment and ECA uh does early college and you graduate typically with about 50 college hours and so those are just the high schools uh that you can open and roll to uh there are plenty of charter schools there're in throughout our district uh places you can open and roll so check out what what's available in district 6 and where you might want to serve congratulations [Applause] I want to thank everybody for this award but it's it's something that I enjoy I've always loved working with our students who that we don't say they have a disability they we say they have special abilities and they're very capable of doing anything that we can do and just to give them opportunities and break down the barriers is what we're about and to see them gainfully employed is just kind of warms Hearts so thank you for the support of the board members Dr pilch Tom Kate thank you everyone for your support and helping make this program so successful and my pleasure to introduce to you Natalie Calderon thank you dear the members of the Board of Education I hope this message finds you well my name is Natalie and called The Ron and I am a student at district 6 Online Academy I'm visiting you today to share some of the great things happening at our district 6 Online Academy I believe all students should have the opportunity to know that we have amazing amazing digital courses and online live talk classes at district 6 Online Academy we also have a strong Foundation of teachers who are supportive and believe in each one of their students I've been working with my principal Mr Gonzalez and assistant principle Mrs Gonzalez to try and have our student council go out to District middle schools and tell them all the exciting things we offer our students that district 6 Online Academy can provide to improve live talk classes and elective classes district 6 Online Academy had our first event of the Year Treat Street and we had an amazing turnout student council and St staff were excited about the participation and the joyful environment created in the building our next event for K through 8 will be winter wonderland and it's right around the corner December 6th from 2: to 4:00 p.m. we hope to make this event special for everyone who comes to celebrate I'm happy to inform you that our elementary students have enjoyed their monthly inperson time collaborating and learning with their peers and teachers at our building they even get to enjoy pizza for lunch thank you nutritional service department for providing the pizza for our younger students our students have been working hard across all grade levels using different technology tools to demonstrate their digital literacy skills one example is the fourth grad who virtually adopted a calf and watch it grow as they learn about the dairy farm in high school we have students in an elective class to improve and rebuild the foundation of basic English skills our middle and high school students also have the opportunity for extra help with in-person learning and tutoring for those who need it or are mandated to attend in addition high school students have been taking advantage of concurrent enrollment increasing our numbers this year to the highest since opening a separate goal is to develop a Dean's List recognizing students with two or more A's these students have a strong academic Pursuit and we want to honor that furthermore I have been informed that we have two teachers in current Act of bringing electives to our high school consisting of media Mrs Bailey W is proposing the music in modern media elective which is focusing on movies TVs and video games to learn about the music while addressing academic standards being an online school we only get limited opportunities to engage with music as inperson students do with electives such as band Orchestra and choir by creating a fun and exciting music class for high schoolers we hope we all allow students to engage creatively and develop an appreciation for music that fits our school digital media has officially been brought to our Online Academy and we will be live taught there by Miss Jill Pucket to provide more elective choices one way our school could grow is by bringing in students and adding more teachers to our online program this past summer our district helped us fund a social media campaign to get the word out about our online school in district 6 I'd like to thank the board for supporting us and building a team of teachers who believe in us and are passionate about ensuring online students get the same opportunity as every student in the district we plan to attend attend community events and host in-person Gatherings to connect with potential students this will help our school keep growing and thriving in the future thank you for listening to me share how we can grow and expand our community which was created to accommodate all students education and provide outstanding Educators who encourage students support to our best daily as Community leaders and directors we would greatly appreciate it if you could continue to inform our community that we have our own own online school in district 6 thank you for your [Applause] time well thank you both we may have a few questions for you if you don't mind um Dr Campos spitzy um so just wanted to congratulate the Gonzalez Dream Team on what you've done with District district 6 Online Academy um it has not gone unnoticed I love the idea of the Deans List to award academic success um for students who who've U gotten at least two ways um and then the community you guys are building with the the events the winter wonderland that's coming up and um what a great way to to be online but still uh get to interact um as humans and then the imperson tutoring I think um super key to to have kids have success if they're struggling um and on a personal note uh I work a lot in prenatal care at my clinic um take care of a lot of um teenagers who who have unplanned pregnancies um and one of the first questions I ask them is what's your plan to finish high school and so many times I do hear district 6 Online Academy um so thank you for for that for allowing our our moms to complete their education we got to visit the Online Academy wouldn't I think that was back in the spring but it really really impressive uh to see what you what you guys do and again the way that you're able to bring students who are scattered across the district and sometimes outside of our of our district uh pretty far away but to bring them together and to make help them to become a community get we very impressed with the job that you're doing and again thank you for being here tonight thank you next on our agenda is our update from our student health advisor Council so I'd like to invite our student health advisory Council to come forward good evening members of the board and Dr pilch uh my name is Danielle Bach I am your director of nutrition services and I am simply here tonight to introduce um Rachel herschman our Wellness coordinator and Johanna Bishop our nutrition education specialist uh they are instrumental and key in hosting our Shack and I'd like to invite Johanna up to introduce our sha students thank you good evening president Matthews board of directors Dr pilch and our Council of student Representatives thanks for inviting Shaq back to the board meeting we were here just about a year ago and uh we are excited to share what we've been doing Rachel hman DJ belter our Wellness specialist and Jessie kiano our lead social worker and I have the honor of serving as adult facilitators for sha Shaq uh or student health advisory Council began in 2018 and continues to grow with our students we currently have 22 students in sha from gy Central Brey West Northridge ECA and Charter Schools Frontier and University we welcome D6 Online Academy students to apply for our next year uh just as a reminder our mission statement is and it was written by students is that through activities resources and media that reach a diverse audience sha will create a culture which empowers students and the community to develop healthy physical social and mental habits making a difference in their present and future lives tonight two of our students will be giving an update on the work we have been doing Levi Aldridge from ECA will go first followed by kayy Bumgarner from student or from Frontier AC Academy good evening good evening Board of Education president Matthews Dr djo and members of the Council of student Representatives my name is Levi Aldridge and I a sophomore at Early College Academy I'd like to speak to you tonight not only from my voice but from that of Shaq the student health advisory Council serving gy Evans school district 6 Shaq is a uniquely diverse Coalition of students the members of Shaq are students from around the district and as such bring ideas experiences and voices from around the district being a uniquely diverse team enables us to serve in uniquely vast and Powerful ways over the last year sha has operated numerous successful smoothie bike campaigns has contributed to the expansion of School menus by voicing opinions to the menu planning team we have worked to promote sources of strength within the community and we have advocated for District Six students by sharing their opinions regarding the cell phone policy most importantly Shaq has never ceased to cultivate an environment that inspires responsibility ownership and the desire to lead within student Representatives being grounded on a sources of strength model Sha encouraged encourages students to exercise gratitude and to celebrate what brings Joy the primarily student-led Dynamic of sha constantly vitalizes the leadership and accountability within student Representatives as active as sh as Shaq has been over the over the course of the past year the achievement of district 6 is attributed to much more in fact healthy School meals for all has played a major role in such achievement just as a tree cannot just as a tree cannot grow without ample nutrients our reservoirs of understanding knowledge and character cannot grow without ample sustenance healthy School meals for all has provided that key to success every single day to thousands of students in addition to providing this key to success healthy School meals for all sets a very powerful example this has been made especially clear to me thanks to celiac disease and my need for accommodated meals twice a day I am blessed not only with accessible food to fuel me throughout the day I'm also blessed with a clear example of what it means to encourage success in the lives of others it means to serve and to give every day selflessly it means to empower others to succeed and it means to put the all in healthy School meals for all these are of the many Splendid experiences given to myself and my fellow district 6 students every day thanks to healthy School meals for all for which I am very grateful thank you so very much for giving me the honor and opportunity to stand before you today I want to give a special thank you to director aari for joining Shaq at the summer intensive and for receiving the letter about the cell phone policy and for being such a role model to Shaq Representatives May the reservoirs of District 6's understanding knowledge and character forever grow thank you good evening members of the board president Matthews Dr pilch and members of the Council of student Representatives my name is Kaye Bumgarner and I'm a senior at Frontier Academy I've been a member of the student health advisory Council or sha for almost two years through my time on the council I've gotten to be a part of many events and campaigns put on by Shaq one campaign that you may have heard of is the Smoothie bite campaign to promote student mental and physical health we bring the Smoothie bike to each School represented by a member of sha and allow students to Pedal the bike like and enjoy a delicious smoothie by paying with a kind note to a teacher or an encouraging message to another student this campaign has been a huge success over the years and we've received lots of positive feedback from not only the students but also the teachers and administration at each school as we eagerly await for our spring smoothie bike we kept ourselves busy with our fall campaigns for this fall we've decided on two campaigns mental health displays and nutrition education displays we broke up into groups of our schools and worked together to create each display for the mental health this play our goal was to help students feel more comfortable and connected with their counselors so if there's something they'll need they'll feel comfortable asking we worked together to create emails to the counselors asking a few basic questions like what's your favorite food and what do you like to do as well as questions about what the best way to reach them and arrange a meeting is we took their answer and added them into a fun slideshow we then got our principal's approval on the slideshow and we were able to have our slides added to the TV presentations in the hallways for the nutrition education displays a mixed group of Representatives on the council have been working with a team of dietitians in the nutrition services department to create slides with nutrition facts about our school lunches so students can be better educated on the nutritional value of School meals once the slideshow is completed the slides will be displayed on the TVs in our school as well the fall campaigns are a great example of the involvement and consideration each project and activity in sha takes and how rewarding it is to see your ideas come to fruition even though our campaigns are an important part of sha another great indicator of the work that sha is doing in our district is our shakmat meetings shakmat stands for the student health advisory Council menu advisory team in shakmat a small group of students go to the service center downtown and Sample School lunch menu items these menu items have included lasagna bacon quesadillas and even Sushi another feature of shakmat I that I love getting to see is the effects of your work since I joined Shack and became a part of shakmat I've noticed a considerable shift in the attitude towards school lunches however school lunches aren't the only meal that have been impacted by shakmat until the end of last school year Frontier didn't serve breakfast in the mornings I brought this up at one of the shakmat meetings and not even a month later we had breakfast at school this has been really great and I love being able to grab a healthy delicious breakfast before my classes not only have I found a deep appreciation for cinnamon bagels and cream cheese but I've also noticed each morning lots of people enjoying their breakfast throughout the hallway Shaq has had a genuine and noticeable impact at Frontier Academy in district 6 I'm grateful for the work that Shaq has done in my school and the opportunities it's presented to me over the duration of my membership and I look forward to continuing to be a part of this amazing group for the rest of my senior year we may have a few questions for you guys so uh Dr Campos spitzy so I think you might have touched on it already with the displays um but from your perspective the two of you I know you don't represent all of Shaq but what would you say are let's say the top three Health needs that District Six students have right now that's a big one I think one of them for sure is understanding the consequences of certain behaviors uh and certain even dietary choices that was one of the main focuses of the nutrition slideshow display as mentioned by Kaylee do you have any ideas um for me I think one of the biggest things that I noticed especially at Frontier is the amount of uh stress and pressure that students put on themselves um at Frontier there's it's a small building so there's a limited number of classes and classrooms available to be taught but there is a uh definite Rift in the level of classes so I can either take environmental science and get an eza or I can like take a on a huge challenge in AP Chemistry and I had a really hard time with that last year so I think that that's something that's definitely been impacting my school and I've seen it in a lot of my friends as well definitely agree with the stress factor and hand inand with that goes the seemingly fear of uh approaching school counselors and the like which was another goal of the mental health portion of the display and I think that is also a major challenge faced by District Six students especially high school students Mr sori well since my name was brought up I might as well weigh in here and just uh is not a question it's just a statement that I did appreciate my time uh visiting with the SHA uh folks and I'm also very impressed by the student wellness policy committee that we have here in the school district and their professionalism and efforts on behalf of all of our students as you can tell by these two um exceptional students in front of us uh a lot of great discussions are taking place well thought out and I really do appreciate their input and a guidance as we continue to try to make this school district better for all of our students and staff so thank you thank you thank you Miss Mes I just wanted to ask a couple of questions about um the application process and I guess are there term limits do you serve for one term your entire High School career how does that work um so the application process is pretty simple um I heard about it through a friend so she sent me the Google form link to sign up um and then there's no term limits so once you're on the um Council you're there for the rest of high school if you want to be um it's yeah there's a there's an interview after you fill out the form um if you're selected to be a group of the students that get interviewed you'll go to um your interview and then after that you'll hear back whether you're on or not you remember when applications open applications open in Jan December not January close I just remember that detail well thank you guys I don't know that there are any more questions for you uh I will just say publicly uh thank you for for dinner tonight it was it was fantastic and so we we greatly appreciate it um and thank you for being here tonight thank you thank you [Applause] next on our agenda is a proclamation for Education support Professionals Day and so this one's an action item I'm going to make it up a little bit um I move that the Board of Education of gy Evans school district 6 approves the proclamation declaring education support Professionals Day as November 20th 2024 second thank you both before we go any further Mr aari would you be so kind as to read the proclamation for us I'd be happy to you president Matthews honorary proclamation of the Board of Education of w County School District 6 education support Professionals Day November 20th 2024 whereas public schools are the backbone of our democracy providing young people with the tools they need to maintain our nation's precious values of Freedom Civility and equality and whereas education support professionals are an integral part of the educational process and whereas education support professionals provide a safe and healthy learning environment for students and whereas education support professionals work tirelessly to serve our children and communities with care and professionalism now therefore I Michael Matthews serving as president of the gy Evan school district 6 Board of Education to hereby Proclaim Wednesday November 20th 2024 as education support Professionals Day in district 6 and I urge that we observe this day by taking time to recognize and acknowledge the importance of Education support Professionals in our Public Schools given under my hand and the executive seal of the W County School District 6 this 11th day of November 2024 Michael Matthew's president thank you Mr aari before we open this up for board member comments Dr pilch is there anything you would like to say about this Proclamation I will just say thank you uh to Mr aari for reading the proclamation for us I'd like to uh invite vice president Rose DS to come up to the podium she will accept this Proclamation presuming our Board of Education approves it um you know we we are a large operation with just over 3,000 employees in our district and we could not do what we do for the children every single day without the work and dedication of our support professionals uh we know teachers are the boots on the ground they're the person that um that the students are assigned to right each each and every day and yet our teachers are able to do what they do because of the many people around them who support them and assist them and take care of the children that the teachers serve and so it's really an honor to recognize our support professionals and and have a proclamation to to say your work matters and you matter to district 6 and we thank you for being a part of of district 6 you could work lots of places and not just school districts lots of employment uh opportunities for for you and your colleagues Rose and you choose district 6 thank you well thank you very much it's an honor to be here and thank you for recognizing all the support groups in district 6 um they're a large vital part of District 6 in the education of our students um we want them to feel comfortable we want to help them with resources help support them help grow and help classified Council be big and be the new Fab taste for district 6 we would like to support them and let them know that their voices are being heard and we will support them in any ways we can and it's an honor to make sure that we recognize them like Health Services Health clerks that are there every day to make sure our students students are healthy and they stay in school our bus drivers that get our students safely to school and home and also driving around um for Special Events sports events and make sure our students are there safely our you nutrition workers every day they make sure our students have a healthy safe breakfast healthy snacks and healthy lunch to make sure that all the kids are being nutrition to help with their brains to help them Focus and help them get the education they need our maintenance workers in custodial staff for them to make sure our schools are working and operable make them attractive and help with all the little things behind the scenes that not very well have the time to fix bathrooms or fix things indoors but to keep it safe and clean for our staff and students and also with our special education department there's so many people under that category that we want to make sure that they are recognized for the special treatments they help with our students that help them with they're learning they reading their writing in our dhh department that we have at Central and chapelo our secretaries and office managers to help keep the flow running with our parents assigning a man in the students make sure their attendance are accurate and safe our tech support our it and our librarians to make sure they have books available it Department to make sure our computers and our boards are running so our students can have access to the education that they need and all of these groups that I mentioned are all part a big part of the D6 and a vital part of our children's education and we tend to keep moving and keep adding members to the classified Council thank you okay thank you Rose and we greatly appreciate um uh all of all of the people who support our our teachers and our students I think probably all of us remember uh our bus drivers and we remember that that special uh person in the in the lunchroom that U maybe didn't make us eat everything that we were supposed to eat or that took care of us in in different ways and and so I I know for my kids I know probably for those of us sitting here that um that you guys are a critical part M of kids education and so uh thank you and I don't know if there any more comments from board members Dr campus spitzy well I was just going to say that it you know we all know it takes a village to take care of our kids when we drop them off at 7:30 and don't pick them up again till 3:00 um and you just named the whole village it's like just you going through that list of yes the maintenance workers are are front desk staff um our special ed people and just it's so many people right um that the wouldn't teachers wouldn't be able to do the job that they do without all that other support in place so just thank you so much well we're one big family and we all need to support each other and um help each other move forward for our our children any other comments all right Miss lemon will you give us a vote please director oari hi director Bentley hi director Campo spitzy hi director Mash hi director Matthews hi director Norwood hi director Sullivan hi motion carries 70 sorry sorry thank you yeah thank you so much for thank you so much I appreciate it thank you thank you [Applause] next on our agenda is our superintendent's report so Dr pilch I will give it to you thank you president Matthews um I too want to give a shout out to all of our veterans in our community and in our school district we're so proud of the folks who've chosen to serve and have um made made our country a safer place um I just have one thing I want to talk talk about and that is that November is family and school partnership in Education Month in Colorado and since 2012 Colorado has had a designated month celebrating the importance of family school and Community Partnerships Research indicates that family school and Community Partnerships lead to improved student attendance higher graduation rates and a deeper sense of belonging um students success here in district 6 and throughout the country is directly related uh to parent engagement in schools uh not only does parent engagement impact grades and graduation rates but it also helps students to feel supported and and more connected and motivated in the school setting and we continue to look at ways to improve our Partnerships with families in the community and our parent and family Le Liaisons have conducted voice visits with families they they've started this a couple years ago um and these are conducted throughout the year their their voice visits are an in-person visit that can occur in the home it can occur in a a public place it can occur at a a family event it can occur in an office at a doctor's appointment uh wherever the the parent feels most comfortable having that conversation and uh we have teachers administrators social workers uh counselors and our parent Advocates involved in the voice visits last year we conducted 572 voice visits with families already this year we've conducted 90 um so lots more to come um this has been an important part of really understanding what parents hopes are and what parents needs are and and really solving immediate problems um that might be occurring for their child in the school we held a listening session um for parents at from our Title One schools last month um at that lising session we we heard parents hopes and their needs for their children uh we pulled some themes away from that listening session we plan to bring those same parents together again next semester we ask them to bring another uh family with them to that meeting and then next week we have a a public parent meeting that we will be hosting um next week where where already over 50 parents have RSVP to be in attendance where uh we will again hear from parents on what their hopes are for their children and what their needs are for their children in their schools so that that we can continue to work to meet the needs of our families here in district 6 um we know that students from back backgrounds tend to perform better academically when their parents and families Bridge together with the professionals that are serving the children and so we're working hard to do that we know we know we don't have it perfect yet uh we're glad that November is a month to remind us of how important this work is and for us to continue this work to increase academic achievement for students at all levels thank you thank you Dr Pils next on our agenda is public participation as a board we welcome welcome the comments of community members and we dedicate a portion of each business meeting to provide an opportunity for the community to present brief comments All speakers are limited to two minutes for comments our board members typically will not respond but we may ask District staff to do so all written testimony or handouts must be submitted to the board secretary Miss Amy lemon we ask all speakers and those in attendance to conduct themselves in a dignified and non-disruptive manner cheering snapping clapping and other distractions are not permitted anyone who disturbs order may be required to sit down or to leave the boardroom speakers are responsible for their own speech and should refrain from profane and obscene remarks all remarks must be suitable for an audience that includes kindergarten through 12th grade students this board is committed to providing a safe environment where all members of the school Community are treated with dignity and respect and we expect all speakers to exercise their speech rights responsibly with that read our first speaker and I think our only speaker tonight is Mr Brian Sullivan welcome Mr Sullivan you have two minutes all right uh first I'd uh like to hope you all have enjoyed the elections last Tuesday and would like to acknowledge the veterans and sacrific uh gave all their gave their lives to defend the rights of all Americans I would also like to congratulate Ryan Gonzalez who is a North Ridge graduate and also a veteran and also Yasmin Navaro for uh winning their respective races I don't think anybody has acknowledged that at all um on October 17th my wife and I Taylor had uh had a meeting with Mr Matthews and Mrs Pils discussing my speech at the previous board meeting and the absolute ignorance and disdain for the public to exercise the rights in a public form is astounding to me uh my first amendment does not stop because there is a minor in the room or online or because there is a boardroom full of tyrants bullies and fascists who want to silence their opposition from speaking uh whether or not you agree with my speech is not up to the board uh it's not up to the board to regulate my speech unless it's obviously referring to being physically threatened which I wasn't uh remember acceptable speech doesn't need to be protected but controversial speech does need to be respected okay that's all I got thank you Mr Sol next T night is our consent agenda this is an action item I move that the Board of Education AG greedy Evan school district 6 proves the items as presented on the consent agenda and authorizes the officers to sign any and all contracts second thank you both any discussion on the consent agenda seeing none Miss lemon will you give us a vote please director Zari hi director Bentley hi director Campos Fitzy hi director Mash hi director Matthews hi director Norwood hi director Sullivan hi motion carry 70 thank you Miss lemon next tonight are our revisions to policy ikf R2 graduation requirements uh demonstration of Readiness and this is an item I move that the Board of Education of wel County School District 6 approve the revisions to policy ikf R2 graduation requirements demonstration of Readiness as presented second thank you both any discussion on these revisions not saying any it's very small revision so miss lemon will you give us a vote please director Zari hi director Bentley hi director Campos spitzy hi director mesh hi director Matthews hi director Norwood hi director Sullivan hi motion carries 70 and finally tonight our district valuation Council membership recommendation this two is an action item I move that the Board of Education of G Evans school district 6 approves the membership of the district evaluation Council as
