##VIDEO ID:R4v6gKMUFMs## e e e e e e e e e e e all right good evening everyone it is 602 on Thursday November 21st and I would like to call this regular meeting of the Board of Education to order and ask that everyone please rise for the Pledge of Allegiance I un States ofice thank you will the clerk please call the role present Mr cre present Mr Lopez Mrs Moore present Dr Nar Martinez present Mr noviski present Dr Rodriguez pres Miss Williams present Mrs Willies present for Miss present thank you Mr crem can I ask you to please read the district's mission statement of course our mission statement to provide a high quality education and a culturally safe and nurturing environment that supports all students to live purposeful and fulfilling lives thank you before I ask if there's any any additions to the agenda I need everyone to pull out their agendas because we're about to play a little bit of of roulette okay we're going to move some things around the first thing I need to note is that if you look on our second page of our agenda that close session item we are going to move that to be a recommended motion to go right above Item B under action items I am also going to move item e is now going to be our second item on the agenda item D I'm sorry item f is going to be the third item so item e is now going to become B item f is going to become C item C I'm sorry Item B is now C and then you're going to push everything down after that except you're not going to push everything down after that sorry so item a is going to stay where it is item e is now Item B item f is now item C I'm going to add a new item D we are going to have an addition to the agenda to Sure Thing Mr Dr Rodriguez sure we are going to add an item four a report from Lancing promise under routine matters thank you just a second not to confuse everyone okay okay just to start over item a stays where it is item item e is now Item B item f is now item C we are going to add a new item D which is a closed session that will read the following the Board of Education recess into close session for the purpose of reviewing job applications when candidates request confidentiality as permitted in the open meeting acts SE section 8f so a close session for for Section 8 F of the open meetings act exception is what is going to be item D what was previously Item B is now item a c d e and now you can push everything down after that c d e f does that make sense that was that was just complicated enough right don't worry I'll keep track of where we're do all right thank you so much are there any other additions to the agenda wonderful all right next we have um public comment on agenda items seeing none that moves us on to our presentation first one we have our national Native American heritance much Roundup um with Mr Sergio kek good evening uh November is National Native American heritage month as I mentioned last week in my presentation the lon school district has 368 students identifi as Native Americans from at least 13 different tribes we have a wonderful Native American coordinator her name is Ramona Henry and the program hosts things such as back to school events um distribute supplies Halloween events the ghost supper and um some of the programming includes a summer camp for our kids and we also have Native American clubs at Eastern and Everett and we offer culture classes for schools Upon Our request our wonderful Department from Communications has made a video that we would love to show to you thank you November is Native American heritage month and what that means is it's a time for us to honor and celebrate our cultures we just share all of our teachings and skills and learn new crafts um it's just a time for coming together it's about sharing and promoting culture to non-natives but also for our own people we're um giving them a space to share and feel comfortable and honoring that culture in my family personally um we focus on exemplifying gratitude in all aspects of our life so we spend a lot of time in prayer uh we fast uh we remember those who came before us as a native person we learn things at home that are passed down from Generations that aren't in textbooks or we're not learning in the school system so part of the work that we do that was the whole reason why Native American programs were established to support the native students support the culture sharing that and teaching it back to our people I just had a student ask um after I did the whole you know Native American who we are they raised raed their hand and they said well what happened to them where are they and I said well there's 392 right here in the school district November really has become a month of healing not only for the indigenous Community but our our entire Society speak the truth when you learn something about our culture feel you know free feel free to share that because not everything is accurate and that's part of the work that we're doing is you know making sure that what we're teaching the kids is uh cultur really appropriate and um up to date and accurate together we are able to overcome Prejudice we may not even know we hold which is the main reason that I like to volunteer with the Lancing school district and get back to the students um that knowledge that was given to me that's my favorite part is you know acknowledging that we all have different tribes we're not all the same we have similar things we believe in but languages are different Traditions are different it's a beautiful culture [Applause] thank you I really appreciate us uh highlighting celebrating that additional diversity within the district any questions from board members Dr Rodriguez thank you um is this your film available for teachers in the classroom that they can show to the students and in the district for the parents I mean it's a great great honor to have something like that in the Lun in school district I love that idea and I will make sure that Ryan puts it not only online but we can send it around to all of our staff thank you for suggesting that thank you any additional questions this evening all right seeing none let's move on to our next item which is our Junior board report I do see Miss Christensen and team I believe you guys are our Junior board officers yeah all right if you wouldn't mind introducing yourselves and telling us what you want to present to this evening good evening everybody good evening everybody just press the button oh I see thank you very much good evening everybody uh my name is Jesus Gonzalez Torres I'm a senior at ever high school and I am the President of the junior Board of Education I'm Julia Davis um I go to ever high school um I'm a ninth grader and I am the treasurer for the junior board good evening my name is Washington Sao I'm 11th grader at Eastern High School and I'm the vice president of the junior board um so the good news for Wexford is the Imp implementation of leaders of the pack incense incentive system recognizing students and attendance citizenship and grades the areas um to improve on is quality of school lunches um the theme activities is team sports opportunities for students to engage and build camaraderie for post o the good good news is school week of coinciding with the upcoming Thanksgiving fundraiser um bringing the community together the areas to improve on um they need strengthening relationships among students and faculty and activities um that are uh happening right now or fall sports events a school store and particip participation in MSU concessions to raise school spirit and funds at Gardener they've been having a lot of fun events including dances and assemblies contributing to the um to student engagement um some areas to improve in Gardener or sorry some areas to improve in Gardener um more Library related events for academic enrichment and some activities that's been uh some activities that have been held in Gardener have been door decorating to encourage creativity among students at pattingill the good news is they've been selling um Candy at basketball games to um help fund school events some areas to improve are they want to have a snowball fight to encourage social interaction um at the white rich and some good news is they've completed the mural that has been painted by a community artist and it was a uh there was a PO which is a parent teacher Association funded dance for K through3 fostering Community Spirit some areas to improve is lunch they really need some new lunch food they would like more variety and more nutritious food for students thank you all right so starting off with Eastern's good news um theyve had a lot of active student engagement in winter sports and providing competitive opportunities uh as for their areas to improve they would like enhanced support for students facing personal challenges for their theme activities uh they held a charity volleyball tournament in food drive organized by the student council and uh the National Honor Society to support Community needs um as for seon their good news includes increased engagement in College field trips and enriching students's opportunities as for their areas to improve uh greater awareness of foam policy and fostering school spirit among students uh and forever our good news is that uh students have visited the warden Center for of an equal Place Isotopes in motion including uh many of the other elementary schools um we've had lots of college visits and celebrating teacher appreciation week uh and our basketball both men's and girls is uh starting very soon this for our areas to improve uh just behavioral issues with students uh interacting within between each other and with staff uh for theme activities our student council has been hard at work uh working on dances and activities held on uh Saturdays we're working closely with our principal to get those fleshed out and uh so something that I've noticed there's a lot of interconnectivity between the grade levels all four grade levels interact just fine with each other uh especially in extracurricular activities like sports and clubs so as for things regarding specifically here with the junior board and fitting along with our Better Together theme uh We've continued our uh efforts for our mental health Mondays um uh We've uh decided on upon this logo uh and uh our our parents in this Lancing school district have been getting alerts on parents Square every Friday um additionally I wanted to mention something uh I really want to get Junior board out there this is something incredible that lets all these students uh connect with each other and following fitting along with our theme of wearing green um my idea is that we could have all uh schools and students participate in wearing green and to take a picture and submit it uh so it could kind of get put like on a collage um maybe every month or so or to to appear on the Facebook page of the Lancing School District uh I feel like that would get get us a lot of recognition for for the work that we're trying very hard to accomplish I I'll pass it off to Washington next thank you and building on about um what Jes was talking about uh taking a picture with your whole community supports a theme that we have for this year which is better together and I was thinking about it at home and I was like what that um like how like do different schools like Express themselves and I was thinking that we could have this project where at each school they have a like sticker designing contest and from the three high schools we choose one winner from each school and they come together and collaborate on one sticker idea to distribute to the entire School District I was like this represents our culture from all three schools our differences are similarities and always like it like allows us to work together as a full community to bring our ideas together and see like something physical but also has meaning like behind it thank you um um so I'm going to be talking about Pathway to the holidays um it's this Thursday and Junior board will be helping out with it um it's at the Hill Center Hill Center the Hill Center and um it's going to be till about 8 to noon and yeah that's it are there any questions from us from anybody thank you very much for being here with us what I like about your presentation is the total vision of the laning school district even you represent two different schools what you present to us as culture for the whole district and I hope that we can follow son of your as but um I really see the future and what you presented to us today in some aspect congratulations congratulations to all the people that work with you and I see hope and I hope that we can celebrate together thank you siry yes thank you for the updates and the areas uh to improve you noted that school lunch has came up a couple places I'm just curious if you've had an opportunity Unity to meet with staff to talk about that and share some ideas yeah so very frequently um Miss jod from sedexo is present at our meetings and we've had the opportunity to be able to talk to her and express uh how students feel not only in the high schools but also elementary schools um I will note uh as of from personal experience that um The Experience between lunches in middle and elementary school in comparison to high school has defin itely uh increased um currently at Everett I think the lunches are are good they they've been good and uh it's a change that I really enjoyed seeing uh I can't speak for personal experience at uh the elementary and middle schools anymore but um I mean if they're anything like everetts I I think that they're in a pretty good spot but I like I said there could be some difference um between high school and middle and elementary school lunches yeah I second that at Eastern we haven't really seen any like big problems with our lunches they've been pretty consistent edible like consistently we thank you Dr nvar Martinez yeah so you noted that um at Eastern one of the areas to improve is enhanced support for students facing personal challenges um could you speak a little bit more on that do you know what kind of things uh yeah so as a student at Eastern I School I talk to my peers a lot from like all levels and like all like classes and like a common thing I see is like very like stressed especially like with full DP like a bunch of my peers are talking about oh my God we have a test tomorrow how am I going to do this how am I going to do that so I feel like we have tutting and all this stuff but like like the Saturday enrichment and stuff I feel like it would be nice to have it more frequently to like relieve that kind of stress and maybe some like like a little more focused on Mental Health like advertising more cuz I know we have it like at the clinic and stuff and we offer like free like Mental Health Resources but I feel like advertising it more to people who are like unaware of that would be very helpful to a lot of students just very quickly I'd like to expand on that as well um Washington is completely right um these students are working hard in the full DP program uh I'm at ever but I have a lot of friends at Eastern who are in the program and they tell me that it is difficult but at the same time there's a big payoff um it is important though that the students are getting absolutely all of the um help that they can get with such a hard task um we don't have DP or IB at ever but we do have our AP classes uh I have been in several and I have several classmates who have been in a lot of them too and um those supports are especially useful to these students who are trying to to get to that uh level Beyond right um they're they're hard courses but uh extra extra help after school um has been really really help F and if we could get uh more of that that would be incredibly beneficial to the high school level yeah I agree cuz learning is not just an action it's a mindset Miss Mo I just want to say how proud I am of you all um thank you so much for taking time out to serve your school and to serve the um laning School District Community you all are amazing continue to do the good work and I'm I can't wait to come to your next meeting I'll just say that thank you m Mr Lopez thank you Madame President just a couple of things that I think Administration needs to um you know live from this paper uh would have the issues with cell phone policy um a better communication between students and staff and some of the schools um especially the elementary postto you mentioned that what do you mean by that actually do you mean specifically for post o yeah okay so what we've heard from post o um relationships amongst the students and faculty I mean especially in the elementary schools I remember a time where I felt a little bit disconnected from my elementary school teachers um it's just kind of hard as an elementary school student to get like used to the the school environment at now that I have had more experience in school and everything like that I see I see relationships between my teachers right but from me to them I feel connected to them and I I feel like I can trust in them to help me out but I feel like before that bond is built it's kind of hard to um face teachers as friends kind of right because of course they're Educators but you have to have a certain level of comfort with them to be able to to learn and feel excited about going to school um that that's just at a first glance but I could definitely get more information from post o um as a u former post oian as we like to call him um when I went to post dooke it was much more it was before Co so it was much more connected and there wasn't as much I feel like so soci like not social media but like like technology involved and how we like interacted with each other like I went back to posto sophomore year and freshman year and it was and you could see like some like major changes like people were like little like third graders were running around with like their like big phones and like I feel like as a result of that they've like adopted that like Behavior into their day-to-day life so they started like treating people differently and having like different attitudes about like learning in school you know so I feel like that might have a part to play in it thank you just just one other thought um as far as Sports and the opportunities I think we need to continue working on that um and making it more so that more students can get in sports and also other extracurricular activities music art and those kinds of things yeah I totally agree cuz if we can build them up from u a young age we can have that strong foundation so when we get to high school we can have some great like opport like not great Tunes but like people that excel in their talents you know thank you m president absolutely thank you any other comments from board members well we really appreciate having you all here this after evening we definitely going to keep this a regular thing one board president to another board president that's an Ever Alum you keep it up so proud of you proud of you too Washington it's okay so we appreciate of your contribution and and what you do for the junior board appreciate it thank you oh sure thing but ising a look at the charter oh and they're going to come up with some recommendations from the perspective of students and see how that I mean there's a lot of work to do still but they're in that in that uh trajectory to learn more about the city Charter and then to give their their ideas as to what what they think the city should look like thank you thank you appreciate it take care guys all right our next presentation this evening is going to include our partners from Dean to talk about here comes the bus I'd like to invite Christine Christina slate and Marissa Ras up please good evening thank you for having us um I'm mostly going to turn this over to um my colleagues here to my left but um we've been talking about here comes the bus it's a new app for parents to be able to track where their students bus is um last night at our superintendent parent Round Table we actually got a huge round of applause and a few people that even stood up and were so excited um that we've implemented this app so I want to turn it over to Marissa rias uh she works in our operations Department as an operation office manager um she oversees all of our transportation aspects and then of course over to Chris Dean um who has helped us implement this so I will let them take it away nope you're gonna use that one good evening thank you so much for the opportunity to take a few minutes of your time this evening we've prepared a few slides to cover uh the new app called here comes the bus hopefully it'll uh provide you a basic Foundation of what it is how it works and how folks sign up and where they can go for help so uh you should have a copy of that and it's displayed on the screen here if we could go to the next slide that that'd be wonderful right here perfect thank you um so we've been pleased we uh in partnership with the district obviously and the great leadership of Marissa um and Christina we were able to deploy this live on November 5th um certainly there was a lot of work that went on behind the scenes for many weeks prior to that um but we're pleased to date as of this meeting we already have just about 330 accounts signed up which is awesome I'm working with the communications team and the district information's been communicated out via parent view it's on the website um I'm certain it's been in the newsletter and there'll be additional opportunities in the future so we're really really excited about it uh the number one thing we all can continue to do is to promote it and allow folks to sign up so really at a high level what is here comes the bus uh it's an easy easy to ous app and website that allows a parent to the location of their child's School Bus during its assigned run they can confirm that the home stop has been completed as well as the school stop and they can also choose to receive a push notification uh or an email message when there's a bus substitution or other important information for us to communicate from the Transportation Department one important thing uh right now it is available in English uh French and Spanish we're absolutely working with the app provider to request additional languages knowing how many different languages are spoken in the district so how does it work I don't mean to drag anybody too far down into the weeds but just to let you kind of get a feel for um so each day we're taking in information from the student information system we're combining that with our routing and then we're integrating a whole bunch of stuff on the vehicle side so we know obviously where the vehicles are when they're opening doors things like that for the stops to be completed so all that comes together and the end result is the parent can watch on their phone where that vehicle is uh and what it's doing for their specific student only so how would someone sign up all this information is posted online there's a school district specific code uh that exists and a parent would need the student ID and a last name very uh simple and straightforward signup again all these instructions are are posted and at the end of the presentation I'll share with you the resources we have if anybody needs help um we have a team of folks who are specially trained to answer questions help anybody get up or or just answer General concerns so an example here uh sometimes it's a little tricky to show video on a PowerPoint so I I went with the tried and true poach these are some screenshots so if you just look from left to right um very quickly I'll explain on the furest left screenshot you can see in the middle of the phone there there's a yellow uh dot essentially that is uh the location of the bus and then you have your home stop and your school stop which are both displayed red around the home stop you see see a little uh Circle it's called the geofence that's a radius that the parent can control and they can choose to receive a notice when the bus goes through that zone so they can move that wherever they wish by default it's around their home stop so when our bus pulls up um they get a notice on their phone hey the bus is going to be here um please be ready with your student or please be ready to accept them so as you go from left to right uh the second screenshot the bus has completed the school stop the school has now turned green signifying that stops complete and then the third one um this signifies the bus going into the Zone a notice coming up in this case on the screen that says the bus number entered the students radius uh please be prepared and then finally in the fourth screenshot the fth this one on the right both the home stop and the school stop are complete I think one thing to note this is specific to a student so when their transportation is complete uh the functionality of the app will stop so a parent cannot track a bus Whenever Wherever when their students transportation is over uh the bus falls off the map and the next morning it will pick up again so something that I think is very unique to us and we've worked very hard with the district on is we've learned that uh it's very important to provide an an Avenue for parents and any anyone else that needs support to get support in an efficient way uh we have established a transport transportation technology support team uh that is is staffed with individuals specially trained in this app and other Technologies we use access 411 as well so if a parent has a question a concern or anything of that nature really the best thing for them to do is to call our office directly um and they can follow the prompts for here comes the bus support that connects them specifically with uh two folks right now Dan Cliff uh and I I'm involved in all those uh conversations as well that way we can answer any specific things uh that are related to the app but also to their exact transportation we can get the help of the operations team technology so it's it's a onstop shop for parents to get their their questions answered in certain instances if a parent has a concern about the whatever type of phone they have and version 19,000 and you know it gets so far into the weeds we we invoke the help of the app provider but 99% of the time we hope that parents uh contact us first and absolutely we will respond with an answer um and if we can answer it right away we'll acknowledge the question make them make them aware we're working on it and get back to them as soon as we can so we're really excited about this effort a lot of work I'm here representing a lot of folks on our team behind the scenes with involvement uh to make this happen and certainly uh with the leadership uh here we're very pleased that it's it's deployed and live and ready for everybody to sign up so tell all your friends please and we'll be happy when everybody adopts it so thank you very much pleased to answer any questions you have thank you and not because I was ever multitasking and not paying attention during that presentation but during that presentation I signed up so it was that easy it pushed a notification through my email to be FR my student I can't see anything because it's it's after hours but it worked so thank you it helped because you displayed the school code so I have to keep looking for it so hurried up and uh did it really quick so any other uh comments or questions from board members sure thank Dr kavanov so you mentioned that parents can adjust the radius that they're looking for um so I just want to clarify for folks listening and to make sure I understand correctly so for example if I am at work and my work is 30 minutes from home um I could set my radius so that I get an alert that tells me with enough time that I know I have the time to leave work to make sure that I'm there is that correct that's correct you'd have a little bit of work to do on your end to figure out exactly what that looks like and where depending on where where the bus goes but you can move that radius Wherever You Wish when our bus goes through it you'll get a notice U by default if someone signs up it's going to work automatically around the H stop which is um a typical use case but others I've seen have done what you're describing and you can move it wherever you wish on the map to get a notification whenever you'd like great thank you mhm um I assume this is just for routed students going to and from school right now is it available for like a field trip or something like that in a one time or is that a lot more difficult to load in students that's a an awesome question it's not available today this is just for H to school transportation however we have inquired about what they call an activity module that would allow for anything really Sports trips field trips things of that nature so absolutely that's on the road map but in today's implementation not not exactly right now thank you any additional questions Mr schoner absolutely uh well first of all I just want to say thank you um but I will relay a comment that was made by some parents at our parent Round Table uh I think you all know the weather was a little bit yucky uh the last couple of days and a parent said it was awesome I didn't have to stand in the rain with my child I waited for the bus to Ping we then got out we were only outside in 3 minutes the bus picked us up and it was great so I think you know you know typically they say out of the mouth of babes but really more importantly out of the mouths of parents we hear how this works and uh it was really uh well accepted by the parents that have used it and certainly from a superintendent's perspective any family listening to this uh please if you use the dean Transportation sign up for it uh it's totally free it's part of what we do here uh and we think this is just yet another way that we're becoming more uh you know kind of Forward Thinking to support our parents and our kids thank you superintendent I'll share your comments with our team too that work so hard to get it going thank you thank you all right awesome thanks next on the agenda we have our report from superintendent Mr Scher fantastic well good evening everyone um I have some remarks but since there's so many great people in the audience I just want to say uh thank you thank you to the students uh you know I've been able to spend some time with the uh with the junior board they're really awesome students and we look forward to uh you not only doing well in the Lancing School District but you know in years to come and all I would say is please don't forget us uh we want you to come back and and work with us uh you've been so great um you know not only uh do we have uh you know Chris uh but uh but Kelly thank you so much for always being here uh thank you for all the things you've done for this District uh we really appreciate the collaboration between uh Dean and um and the school district um there's been so many things that we've gone through uh it's just great to see you and and your entire family really taking the charge with us um so thank you for being here uh I see our president vice president of of Lassa is wonderful to see our Union representation uh here to support uh their members but also the district and then of course we have some uh wonderful members of Lea who might or might not something might be happening today that we are very very happy to talk about so it's just great um when our community can come together to these uh to these meetings couple of things I do want to mention this week has been a big focus on our green initiatives uh I know that uh trusty nitzky has often times at this uh horseshoe talked about how uh districts really across the country need to be more green more um supportive of the environment but also to be thoughtful about moving forward and today and this week I think have been a great example uh yesterday we had an announcement about uh us putting our first solar panels on the roofs of our schools so we actually have solar panels up at North and we are putting them up at pattingill as we speak although it's dark hopefully they're not on the roof right now but they uh they are doing it and it's just the beginning of a long-term project of bringing solar to our district uh with three really important pieces one is of course it's going to save money because if you're making your own energy and you're using it uh you certainly don't have to pay uh as much at the electric bill uh but please nobody worry we are wonderful partners with bwl they are thrilled we are doing this it's helping their grid um the second of course is that it reduces pollution uh things you know the fossil fuels burning and things like that uh to be able to create kind of clean energy has been great but one of the things that working with the school district has allowed us to do is that a lot of the work that we're doing with the green initiatives also includes job Readiness programs programs with our students especially at um Lancing Tech and so as we become more of a leader in green energy we're going to be more of a leader to helping our kids get jobs in this incredibly burgeoning field and that was yesterday and today we hosted actually a national uh kind of conversation about EV buses the dean family was well represented which was great to see you guys there as well as the federal government the state government and of course our incredible uh facilities team and what we talked about today was how Lancing is becoming a leader in uh electric vehicles really across the country we're uh bringing in EV we're going to bring in charging stations we're going to be able to create our own energy through our solar um and you know one of the things that's really important about school buses of course is that if you're driving an EV bus you're not idling with the the fumes it's not burning the diesel it's not doing all those things uh that we know are not great we have certainly High asthma rates in this uh Community uh we have pollution rates and so the idea that we can be at the Forefront of this has been great and along with the grants that we've won for Ev comes the education uh partner as well and so I think it's just really great that this week has been about this now the irony of course is that the sun hasn't been out all week and it's been miserable out um but that's why you can't be only solar uh but you can certainly uh be able to produce your own energy that's going to be great so you know anybody listening uh you know please look forward to the next couple of years as we bring in more electric vehicles we bring in more solar we do some really really Innovative work and I've been I've been thrilled with that and all of our partners from you know Green link to bwl to to to Dean to um so many of our folks um it's been it's been terrific um but as I always do and I will do this in front of the dean family as well uh until we have solved our bus problem uh I will give you the numbers uh the gas cards are at 2590 requests with 20 uh 2255 assigned uh we know that the gas cards have been coming uh we've been hearing that the the movement is pretty good but please if you are waiting on a gas card please make sure to contact us we do not want you to be without with Kata we have 583 routed uh uh requests with 530 assigned again we know that uh some folks are actually wanting the bus now they're able to use all of the rides and now with the with after school programming or even jobs things like that so we got you and the good news in terms of the dean stuff we have um 3,721 assigned with 3,470 um that are uh uh put on the bus so that is still a differential of of over 200 we are working very closely with Dean to try to get everybody routed uh but please know that we are continuing to work on that we do hope uh that we're going to be able to get every child uh the the direction and the transportation they need but we are really appreciative that all three the gas cards the catac cards and the Deans are able to get our kids to school uh which has led to increased attendance rates and things like that so uh that is my report I know we have a lot to get through today so I try to not be as long-winded as I I sometimes am uh but really this week has been a terrific um example of how Lancing is not just doing well but really becoming a national leader in some very important things like um uh green initiatives so with that I want to turn it back over to our president uh and look forward to the rest of the meeting thank you that's perfect thank you any questions for the superintendent seeing none we're going to move right on to our routine matters our first routine matter this evening is our finance committee report Dr cabau hi everybody the finance committee met this Monday which was the 19th 18th whatever day Monday was um as a reminder we meet on the uh third Monday of every month news donations received during the month of October 2024 totaled $4,149 we want to thank our October donors especially cica Bank Edward Jones blackbow and their various Partners we also received donations through my school box um through ever at high school as well as from various donors through sexon Athletics so thank you very much finally I want to shout out the finance team who has had um a really awesome streak of getting grants uh which is amazing I feel like every other day I open my email and see a new Grant announcement from them so that's great um particularly in this past month um three grants were received one being the re EI D Grant um which I've heard they call the eio grant um which is for guy Park solar rooftop um so in line with the superintendence report another Grant is the Mi healthy schools Grant um which is designed to improve indoor air quality and make other energy related enhancements and then the third is the youth climate action Grant um through which youth in grades three through six will get a lesson on pollinators and plant growth and then have the chance to plant seeds and watch them grow for some learning in action um and so I also want to highlight that all three of those grants are um related to um a clean energy future which I think is great news um so shout out to the fin Finance team for um all the grants that they receive um and we are grateful for their work Mrs president that includes the 2024 treasurers report for October thank you so very much are there any questions from board members this evening keeping in mind that on the consent agenda this evening we do have the approval of the November October Treasures report and expenditures as presented okay that moves us on to our second Committee of one for the week our facilities committee Dr kavanau it's me again so on that very same day this past Monday the facilities committee met um and Mr Lopez was not able to make the meeting so I am giving the report in his place um we got some great updates on all of our buildings under construction um specifically sorry I've got to my notes Here on my phone instead um specifically in Mount Hope um windows and doors are going in painting is starting um everything is on target for an ontime finish for Mount Hope which is very exciting um for Willow the small pods are up and the big pods are going up next um the parking lot's Being Framed so um the they're doing as much site work as possible now while the weather um remains um such that they are able to do that um at gluten the new layout the new design is final and so we'll go out to bid um in seon there is flooring painting new doors pipes Etc General Improvement um Atwood very similar some flooring going in soon um so that's great at pattingill the sixth through eighth graders um will get to move into their new pods their new um their new area that we got to tour um and that will be happening soon and and in Kavanaugh air condition will be added this summer as well as other improvements such as uh solar parking um changing the Bus Loop so that that whole situation works better Etc um so we are grateful for those construction updates um you'll see later on the agenda we have some things to approve uh regarding um the facilities committee and their work so I am happy to discuss those when we reach them on the agenda um and otherwise that concludes the facilities report thank you are there any questions for Dr cabanon this evening okay see none we're going to move on to our next um committee report that next committee report is an update and discussion around the board Equity advisory committee so you do have a copy of what I'm about to pass out in your board book electronic copies but just to make sure everyone has a copy I'm just going to pass these around we were um last presented with the equity committee update let's see when was that in May of this year and so we have not um given clear next steps are guidance on what exactly it is that we want to do as a board based on the equity advisory committee's recommendations and so what I've created for you here is a document that summarizes each of the the actual recommendations that were made by the um Equity advisory committee and the advisory committee overall recommendations were one to continue to convene the Equity advisory committee at least quarterly to monitor the progress of implementation develop a structure that engages families and students of color and elicits their inputs for decision-making processes in the school district and hold staff accountable for manifestations of bias stereotyping Prejudice including various forms of microaggressions so those were the the summary overall investigations but if you recall as they did the presentation there was like a restorative justice recommendation recommendation on information related on what we should have amended in the report cards family engagement um things of that nature and so um figuring out an anonymous bias reporting system so I wanted to create this document one to have some generative discussion with my colleagues this evening to see if there was anything in particular that was of priority and to uh confirm that there was a cons consensus to continue to convene the advisory committee so it's an right now this is advisory committee of the board that we you know it exists for a purpose as long as we want it to exist I think that we have not yet fully fulfilled the goals we set aside when we first launched it and so I would recommend that it continue however I have been the board uh liaison and person leading this from the board perspective along with the support of Dr Sarah O'Neal and Mer many others and I have three meetings left on this board so we need to as a board come up with a consensus and a plan to carry this work forward Miss Moore how did you know I was going to come you could feel it um Madam president I think that it's extremely important that we continue the work we're going to miss you but we have to continue the work um and as far as things to focus on I did go to a conference and I went to a session on restorative justice and so I think that we should continue I I feel that that should be a focus of the board um if other board members are in agreement but that's something that I think is important for the work to continue and we continue to um focus on restorative justice as one of the pieces thank you DRZ thank you very much we had that we includ that in the or some way we can put that in action I think maybe we need dialogue the administra how to proceive here and see present today I a good conversation and dialog create for the is is is other comments from board members so one of the things that we need to do is I would like to identify who I am passing this torch off to um before the end of this calendar year so that we can have a transition planning meeting for whoever is going to be the board leaz onto our advisory committee so we don't have to decide that tonight I want it to get on the agenda as a committee report so that we can have continued conversations and then plan to revisit it again in December does that sound good yes by consensus great all right yes I mean you cannot say how can we say all right next on the agenda is our cons oh absolutely Mr Lopez um I'd like to for us to put together all the other committee report that de and some somewhere else to support so that we can of put them all together that they that they work hand in hand and not have uh competing documents in a way I'm not saying I'm saying in a positive way is that that we all understand who we're at so that when staff is dealing with whatever is that we have a a compact of of our um you know uh different uh I'll say Dei um uh work together so and I know that we have several documents that speak to that to civil rights you know differential treatment and so on and so forth but I just want I want us to make sure that we have them all together and that they you know that they uh are congru with each other yeah that's a that's a really good point Mr Lopez so the board has passed a resolution to uh direct the superintendent to develop a multicultural group specifically to focus on multiple Multicultural curriculum development right and so I would I would illustrate that as like a subtext curriculum is one of the things that needs to be handled under Multicultural lens right so we have the the Multicultural curriculum work that just got up and running and I know we're going to get a report about it very soon the great news is there's some overlap between the participants in the Multicultural committee which is the districts and then we have the board Equity committee which we commission as a board there's overlap of that membership which is really helpful because that also allows for a lot of the um continuity and the although we are in in a transition process with Dr Sarah O'Neal Miss Benitas is running the the um the Multicultural task force and then our staff liaison that is supporting us under the equity advisory committee reports to Jessica as Spas so that's one way that we can have that continuity that's how it's functioning but to your point we want to make sure that the way it rolls up to us as a board that it presents to us that it's there's some continuity there we're doing that sometimes we lost and then terminology so I just I just want us to make sure that we're all talking the same language completely agree that's why I just need somebody to do it when I'm not here so I just want to just want to make sure that that's that's still not a priority that's lost by the board so thank you thank you question all right that brings us on to our consent agenda our consent agenda this evening includes the approval of the November 7th regular meeting minutes the approval of the November 14th information oh you guys just let me keep right on moving we are not onto the Cent agenda we are on committee report number four which is the Lancing promise report for Dr arriz thank you thank you mad president thank you I know that we have so many she already had a meeting with the student from ever more than 2,000 I mean 2,000 we love to more than 219 were present and she has um what she did with them and maybe one of these day can present to us that you had over there in number six what her program is all about but I hope that one day we had her here because she one of our students and you will see and she's the one of the receive 50,000 for magic then is creating the her own company is doing all things then um thanks to magic thank to thank to the graduation and the teachers from NE high school and the administration for creating this kind of citizens in the luning area um finally we we also uh going to be working in a a strategic plan a new strategic plan for um promise on and the foundation uh is going to be uh I think the future of what they want to do and um Magi promis $5 million we already or they already received 1 million then we are moving we are doing that for the student I think that maybe Justin has to come in front of us again to tell us all the good things that they planning to do with us um more than happy to answer any questions I know the answer president oh I just like to go back a little bit uh when the promise was put together the the promise zones um who knew what it was going to happen right so the board appointed uh the initial board which again included the three individuals that were mentioned um Tim Damon uh Dr Linda Lee Tarver and of course Kelly Dean so Kelly's been a pleasure working with you and I know you're not going anywhere so you're going to still be around so I'd like to offer a quick hand of Applause for Kelly Dean for all his [Applause] work he's not going anyway he he has as president like take awesome thank you so much any additional questions all right thank you now we are on to the consent agenda the consent agenda this evening includes the approval of the November 7th regular meeting minutes the approval of the November 14th information study session well as uh two bid recommendations one for the repair of the baseball Dugout at Eastern High School and one for the repair of the baseball Dugout at seon may I have a motion Madame President Dr naris Martinez I move that the Board of Education approve the consent agenda as presented second so been move by Dr naris Martinez supported by Dr Kavanaugh all those in favor signify by saying I I oppose same sign motion passes 80 now we are on to our new reconfigured agenda which means our next item is the action item for us to consider the Le approval of the Lea contract may I have a motion Madam president oh sorry Mr nowinsky I move that the Board of Education approved the negotiated contract with Lea as present it's been moved by Mr D winsky I'm going to give it to Miss Moore because I saw her finger moving a little bit faster there I know we have our president here in the um audience and I'm certainly grateful for all of the collaboration and work that went into securing this agreement um that has been signed and I'm presuming ratified by its members um are there any additional questions or comments all right seeing none may I have a roll call Vote Yes Mr creem Mr Lopez yes Mrs Moore yes Dr Nar Martinez yes Mr noski yes Dr Rodriguez yes Miss Williams Mrs Willis yes great motion passes 80 and this seems like very anti-climatic but this is great that we have this side so thank [Applause] you I would like to see if the superintendent has would like to make any remarks go ahead I would well first of all thank you board for acknowledging the incredible hard work of our uh Lea members the school district is only as strong as everybody that works for our children and nobody works closer with our children than our assistant the fact that they have come time and time again to support our children to support our teachers and support our community really means the world to me as a superintendent to I know this board and certainly everybody in the district uh I'm honored that you're here uh and just to remind everybody that the last time there was a contract it was imposed upon this Union um I want to very clearly State how wonderful it was to negotiate with them how thought ful they were about putting their children first and of course their members and I think that what this represents this new contract represents is an honorable contract to showing uh that our folks really deserve uh the salaries I mean of course everybody deserves more don't get me don't don't get me wrong but we're finally bringing the salaries up to uh really being the setting the standard for this community uh you know we are thankful that the starting salary of teacher is the highest in the area we're thankful that um you know we have our lasa members that are uh paid well but our Lea members it's the last contract it's the contract we haven't signed yet in the years I've been the superintendent and today I think is a momentous occasion uh because this board passed unanimously a true belief in the hard work that you've done so I want to thank you all for doing that it's been a pleasure bargaining with you and negotiating and we actually have cake and we want to take pictures so if the board doesn't mind we can break for a second take some pictures support Le and thank them for their hard work thank you thank you I'm actually going to ask uh that we recess for 10 minutes and so the board is going to go and recess well for for 12 minutes we're going to recess until 7:20 that does not mean close session so everybody can stay this is recess e cake e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e we're going to rec reconvene the meeting thanks so much everyone if I could just get my colleagues back to the tables horseshoes horseshoe table the theas there we go we really appreciate that we had the opportunity to take some time to celebrate with our Lea friends um and to have this contract ready to go thank you next on the agenda we have our new Item B which is to discuss the dean contract proposal so we do have a recommended motion may I have one made please Madam president go ahead Dr Kavanaugh um I recommend that the Board of Education approve the dean contract Amendment as presented second thank you it's been V uh moved by Dr kavanau supported by Miss Williams now that we have a motion on the floor are there any comments or questions this evening I believe just as a summary um this is the finalized um contract Amendment as was previously discussed during our closed session with this board um and is now just coming back to us for approval any comments questions that's easy all right seeing none all those in favor please signify nope we're going to do a roll call will the clerk police call the rooll Cabana yes Mr cre Mr Lopez yes Mrs Moore yes Dr nebar Martinez yes Mr noveski yes Dr Rodriguez yes Miss Williams Mrs Willies yes all right thank you so that motion passes 80 appreciate it we're going to continue in our contract with Dean Transportation next on the agenda this item are new item C which is our Playmakers Fitness Foundation approval um may I have a motion Madam president Dr Kavanaugh I recommend that the Board of Education approve The Playmakers Fitness Foundation CSA as presented second it's been moved by Dr kavanau supported by by Miss Moore are there any additional questions or comments I can certainly um would appreciate a summary from agree pun to Mr Scher well so first of all thank you so much uh we're really proud of this CSA uh being presented we've been creating a very strong relationship with Playmakers they've been a a Youth Athletic Organization for many years in this district and have really been supportive of our new revitalized uh Athletics program especially amongst our younger students so I know that uh Deputy superintendent benovitz would like to speak on behalf of this as well and certainly both of us are able to answer questions uh Jess all you all right thank you um we're really excited about this uh proposal so what The Playmakers Fitness Foundation CSA is all about is they would provide us with Personnel that would run an after school uh club or experience I guess I would say for our third through fifth grade students across uh 20 of our schools across the district uh it would last for five weeks and then we also would have a five week Saturday program as well in addition to that the purpose of the CSA is to provide Fitness uh opportunities for our third through fifth graders after school and then really on The Saturdays it is to introduce them to track and field experiences prior to them getting into our Middle School sports one thing I just want to add is I think all of us know that sadly years ago um when finances were difficult the district really kind of disengaged in some of the Youth Sports programs and you know if you're really part of a strong Athletics program you really have to start young and so we've seen the kind of issues with not having a strong youth program and so we're really excited to present this this to the board because we think this kind of recognizes one of the first steps we need to do which is to get students young to not only learn great technique but to also have fun and be out there and this grant would allow us or this um CSA would allow us to offer a lot of uh participation across our many schools and so uh we're thankful to have a partnership with Playmakers and certainly uh either Jess or I can answer questions about uh this program questions from board members this evening I have just a couple so this is five week it's a five-week program and it says that we should be enrolling at least 10 students per program and if we don't there's information here about how it's per rated so it sounds like 10 is the minimum is there a maximum 20 they 20 got it thank you yeah for a total for the District of 350 students I'm seeing is that correct okay and we're paying for the total cost of this is $40,800 for the five-week program can we talk a little bit about how this incorporates into our program that sue Wheeler runs and I just my brain just completely student development program thank you sure so this is a little bit different because this is really under the athletics department which is under Steven Draper and the um kind of enrichment program program because one of the things that he's been tasked with is to truly build this kind of pipeline so starting young you getting kids engag getting kids active now of course these kids can always go to the student Development Center and work with Sue and John and the whole thing but um think of this as a District's trying to really invest in its high school sports and then it's Junior High School sports well you need to have third fourth fifth you need to have younger kids have access the district isn't really built for that um in a lot of communities that's usually run by parks and wreck and things like that and so what we're trying to do is actually bring it to our schools bring it to our kids and be able to uh to fund it because one of the issues with parks and wreck really around the country is that families have to pay and we don't we we want to be able to support our kids to do this um so this is kind of the the beginning the youth the early stages of then getting them active and then getting them into running Etc so it's tied deeply in with our enrichment Department uh with Stephen and the athletics department Madam president I do have a couple of questions oh so when is the actual starting dat is the first question um because it is after school and on weekends have we looked at providing meals snacks or something as we do with the student development so that or maybe even incorporating a nutrition aspect to this as well so that the kids are well balanced because they is after school I would have to check specifically with Steven Draper but I do know that we do provide snacks at almost all of our after school programs so I would be very surprised if that was not the case for this the issue with the weekend programs might just be access to kitchens and things like that but it's definitely something that we'd look into uh in terms of the start date it really depends on when and if this is approved and then we're going to be able to set it but our hope is you know if it's it's a five-week program with with weekends is certainly we don't necessarily want them running through the snow so the idea is that we would start in the spring the start date would be conention on approval as well as uh facilities uh availability so we say I'm five five weeks Monday through Saturday or Monday through Friday then after that then Saturdays for five weeks no I don't believe it runs I think it's Tuesday and on Saturdays in that five we window Tuesdays through Thursdays and on Saturdays yes Madam president I just want to make sure that I'm clear so two programs Tuesday through Thursday enrollment cap 20 students per school I'm just curious is it first come first or bases and what happens to those kids that aren't able to um be a part of the program and do we anticipate possibly offering this program in the summer is that possible yeah I mean I think the way to think about it is this is uh we've never done anything like this before uh it's pilot uh I would love to be in the position where we had so many kids that we needed extra uh but we want to be careful because what we really want to make sure of is that enough come to actually fill it out um I will guarantee you that if we have full capacity there's nothing we would like more than to work with Playmakers to increase this and uh have summer have winter you name it um but you know we want to when we start something we want to keep it small make sure that we can do it well and then uh be able to expand and do you know if Playmakers has the capacity if we need to expand yeah I mean so this we've had a lot of conversations about what their capacity is um you know I think that the the capacity is to expand depending on date and time and space and also same thing with us and I will say that I think there is a start date and an end date in the contract it's the middle of April to the middle of May uh that was decided because it's better weather but it's not the end of the school year um but you know that's what we would agree to there would probably be flexibility if we needed but they have to staff up I mean one thing that we were really appreciative of in talking to them is they're going to have so many different sites the fact that they can have that many adults is pretty amazing a school School District it's really hard to do that and so we were pretty happy about it so you know if you look at the second page there is a start date and end date and there's some other things like that so our hope is that this goes well and then we can talk about expansion well it sounds good and it is track season so it's perfect perfect timing thank you I almost want to vote no just because it says that they're going to be have the ability to complete a one or two mile run for fun which I don't run unless Chase so there's that but I guess it's it's good it's good for kids um any additional questions or comments Mr Madam president I just say I'm excited about this I know it's one of our um strategic plan initiatives to increase extracurricular so this certainly Falls in line with that I believe uh Girls on the Run and similar programs in the past were successful um so this is a bonus to even have it administered by a local uh company and um have those connections built I can only see positive things coming from this as it gets implemented thank you Mr noisy any other comments questions see non approval for the contracted service agreement as presented all those in favor signify by sign I I oppose same sign motion passes 80 now we are going to go back to our next item on the agenda so new item D which is the close session to discuss the um recess and to close session for the purpose of considering material exempt from disclosure as permitted under the open meetings act may I have a motion Madame President oh okay just kidding uh let's actually we do need to go in a close session but we need to go in a CL close session for the purpose of of considering the purp this close session would be under Section 8f which is for the purpose of considering an application for employment that um the applicant has requested occur in close session may I have a motion Madam president I recommend that we go in that we recess into close session for the purpose you described second perfect it's been moved by Dr Kavanaugh supported by Miss Moore any additional questions or comments say I oppose same sign okay that motion passed 80 and it is 7:35 and we are in close session e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e camera's up all right can't uh okay it is 8:00 P.M we are back out of our first Clos session so that one went from 7:35 until 8:00 p.m. we do have um we do have another action item actually that I want to do before we go back into our other close session so that the staff that don't have to be part of our last two agenda items are welcome to depart um we do have a recommendation it was previously item H to appr approve the audio enhancement at Atwood as presented could I have a motion for that please Madam president I moved at the Board of Education approve the audio enhancement at Atwood as presented second move by Dr Kavanaugh supported by Mr crem can I just get a brief summary I'm looking at Miss sleep yep absolutely um as the board may recall we um did our first installment of audio enhancement at Lions elementary school so this is a whole school notification um system and it also creates uh there's a learn um excuse me a sound system in each classroom as well so the teachers wear a lanyard around their neck that has a microphone so they can speak at their normal speaking voice and then there are speakers throughout the entire classroom so it makes it easier for students to hear um so this both does both things it's our it's our whole school AV system and then it also does the classroom piece uh so now we are looking to expand this into our first K8 school what this will also allow us to do is have multiple different Bell schedules um to try out in a school so as we know K5 is self-contained and then they have their lunch periods where our sixth through eighth graders move like a high school does through different periods so we'll actually be able to ring the bells in the middle school classroom so they'll know when to move throughout the school but it does not disrupt the K through five self-contained classroom time oh nice so that is the product we're just looking to expand and we're super excited about it yeah and one thing to add we already have this at Lions um it's it's going very well it's really bringing I I don't know when you go into our schools if you ever look at some of the older schools and their Bell systems it looks like a very bad closet of wires um it's always very scary to me um but at Lions they've been able to have all modern equipment they can close uh you know the sound system for different rooms in invent of emergencies if you need to just page one room it's really quite powerful um and in addition uh a lot of studies are being shown that having a microphone around uh the teacher's neck allows the teacher to speak in a kind of normal voice but because we actually have um built-in sound systems at Lions the children are able to hear it uh throughout so um audio enhancement is really Best in Class I think the last time I checked there in almost like a third of all schools in a country at least in all districts in the country um and we've had really nothing but positive at lions and so uh Atwood deserves some love too and uh we think we can bring it here Y and I just wanted to mention that their traditional system is old Antiquated and down and so in order for us to fix it we would have to be very creative in how we would do that because they no longer make the parts uh to support the system that's currently in the school so we wanted to make sure we did this upgraded um system through throughout the entire School great and I just want to note a couple things so it's $172,000 which includes the equipment the system the training and the licensing software we already have this as you mentioned at Lions we're expanding it into Atwood I'm going to try see if I can confirm two assumptions that I have one assumption is that the equipment both the school and the classroom equipment that's a one-time cost but then we're going to have ongoing software cost correct but the software costs are not extensive it would be if we needed to upgrade software um so it's not something that there's like an annual software um fee that's incl so once we pay for this license then it's just maintenance it's not the same perfect and if we like it as I presume we will is there a plan for us to continue to um expand this understanding that we're using sying fund this time absolutely so the next school that's actually on the list after we get atw installed is to explore this at um Lancing Technical High School so where we have Community Partnerships that are using different parts of the building Lancing Tech then we can limit this to the spaces that just Lancing Tech High School is using at the moment and then expand it as needed and I'm thinking about those those classroom spaces aren't as conducive corre without having and they're spread out throughout the school yes that's awesome okay great any additional questions Mr oh sure Mr C are we looking at I guess expanding more than just one time to maybe get a you know a better rate yes we are um so part of it is it was pretty simple to install at an elementary school in a self-contained setting and so really expanding into Atwood to get both that secondary feel um I think once we get that part of it and get that you know nailed down we have a full understanding of how the system works in that dual Duality um between the different grade levels then I think then that's when we're going to start exploring doing multiple at a time what's really great is this company has been really amazing to work with um and I think they'll continue to be like that the more we install I do agree that they'll probably give us a little bit of a discount uh when we come in but I will say that they are already doing so as well um by us starting the pilot program and really bringing this into Michigan more sounds good thank you any additional questions or comments this evening all right we have a motion on the floor all those in favor signif signify by saying I please I oppose same sign motion passes 90 that brings us I'm going to have us do our policy reading we have our second reading of uh policy 2264 non-discrimination on the basis of sex and education programs or activities May I have a motion Madame President I move that the Board of Education received the the policy for second reading and approval and approve it as presented second thank you it's been moved by msky supported by Dr Cavanaugh any questions or comments about adopting POS sure I want I want to thanks to the administration and the board of the board member there in the policy committee for the work that we put in and this policy and others in the last few month few weeks then just to than so of them and and for the board education to read twice the same policy thank you thank you any additional questions I certainly appreciate the work of our policy committee um CNN will the clerk please call the rooll yes Mr Kem yes Mr Lopez yes Mrs Moore yes Dr Nar Martinez yes Mr neski yes Dr Rodriguez yes Miss Williams yes Mrs Willies yes thank you motion passes 90 now we are going to move into our close session will may I have a motion this now go back to your original close session this one's going to be to consider materials exempt from disclosure as permitted under the open meetings act may I have a motion Madam president I move that the board of education recess and close session for the purpose of considering material exempt from disclosure as is permitted in the open meetings act by Dr Cav all supported by Dr naris Martinez any questions or comments Madam president I think there's a request for um public comment before we oh go into Clos sessions um man I took the motion take it so I forgot what to do you got table you gotta tell me what to do move to lay the pending motion on the table second okay now there is a it's been moved by Miss nowinsky supported by Dr Kavanaugh I would like to move that we um play do public comment now second you don't don't do that don't do that we're moving to put the motion on on the on the floor on the table we did that no I got to vote for that first so first we have to vote to table the the motion to go into close session okay it's okay it's been moved by Dr Kavanaugh supported by Mr nowinsky that we table the motion on the floor all those in favor signify by saying I I I oppose same sign that motion passed 90 now there is no motion on the floor now I can use my discretion and pull public comment ahead of the closed session do we have anybody registered for public comment let's do that perfect thank you perfect thank you so much no no no we got this oh David hak day okay all right no that's good we don't want to get you out of here I know all right let's get the mic over to you and we'll give you three minutes when you're ready would stay to theend can you hear me all righty you tell me where the clock is it's over there right all right uh my name is David haked I'm a proud president of the Lancing educational assistant but more than that I'm a proud employee at the Lany School District some of you may know I've been in the district over 30 years I've been through a number of contracts this is only The second contract in over 30 years that we actually had the superintendent come to the table I truly appreciate that my team appreciates it uh as he said earlier uh the previous contract and the one before that was controversial to say the best um it was imposed upon us but we're ready to move on we want to service the kids we want to service the district more importantly want to live in this community and be proud members of this community so I just want to let the board know that my members are ready to serve We Stand ready to serve it's the first time we've actually had the superintendent and a majority of the executive committee at the table it went well we had Rich discussions clearly we didn't get everything we wanted I'm sure you didn't get everything you wanted but that's what negotiations is I've lived it I've had short ones I've had two years as Rachel knows uh but we did have a pleasant discussion and I think we're ready to move forward now it's the implementation fee which you guys know you can say all you want here at the table the next thing is to have the superintendent make sure it's implemented so I plan on doing the same with my members I believe that uh from what was said at the bargaining table that's what's going to happen with staff and I do believe and many of you know that I watch this I guess I don't have a life I watch it when I'm at home um so I text folks and let them know I'm watching if it's a quick meeting if it's a bad meeting whatever the case is but what I did want to say is there's two things that stood out for me one is you're concerned about the turnover in my group I think this contract will assist us with the turnover in my group and I pledge my allegiance to try to make sure that happens working with HR the second part of it is you've also pledged to treat all your employees under the same microscope we didn't have that before that's well known in this District it was always taking care of the teachers and then we go from there I love Chuck you know I love Jerry he was at the G in the table with us and about five other presidents that preceded me so um I appreciate what you've done for them but I more appreciate what you did for us in the community now it's our job to implement it and I'm going to stick around to make sure we implement it and we get it done right so thank all of you for your time uh Mr Nino we tease the angel of change we went through trainings 15 years ago uh garl myself we go way back as well I look forward to working some of the new board members and I look forward to working in the Lany school district for a few years coming forward okay thank you thank you so much Mr hak and it is board it is board policy to not respond to public comment however I would like to just thank you for your continued partnership this is probably going to be the last uh bargained contract to that will get to vote for on my 10 years so it's my privilege and I really appreciate being able to work with you over the past years thank you okay now do I have to take a motion to get the off the table first Madam president Mr nosy I moveed to take from the table the motion to go into close session okay it's been moved by Mr nosy uh supported by Dr Kavanagh that we bring our motion back on the table any questions or comments all those in favor signify by saying I I oppose same sign that that motion passes 90 now I have a motion on the floor to go into Clos session any questions or comments to go poor Alex you're gonna have so much fun writing these minutes I cannot wait we have our previous motion that was originally moved by Dr kavan on and virus Dr navaris Martinez to go into close session to consider materials exempt from disclosure as perm minuted by open meetings act any questions or comments all right see none will the clerk please call the yes Mr cre yes Mr Lopez yes Mrs Moore yes Dr Nar Martinez yes Mr noisy yes Dr Rodriguez yes Miss Williams Miss Willis yes that motion passes 90 and at 8:15 we are in close session e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e it is 900 pm and we are back in it is 900 PM we are back into Open session we do have um one more item on the agenda this evening there was I was not at the last meeting but there was a um oh my gosh we just came out a close session I we do have a recommendation to have a um where's how is it written in here okay a recommended motion that the Board of Education approved the resolution to authorize execution of the superintendent's Employment contract as presented may I have a motion Madame President I move that the Board of Education approve the resolution to authorize execution of superintendent Employment contract as presented it's been moved by Dr caban supported by a second Miss Moore no problem are there any additional questions or comments uh well before we vote I just want to make sure that I I would like to take time to voice my support and gratitude um for the superintendent for his continued um work and service to the board or to the district um I know we have a lot of growth but we we have a lot of growth yet to go but we have made a lot of improvements and I'm I'm certainly satisfied with that I've been on this board uh it'll be 13 years um and and I've really truly had a pleasure working with you Ben thank you um any additional questions or comments will the clerk please call the rooll yes Mr Crim yes Mr Lopez yes Mrs Moore yes Dr Nar Martinez yes Mr noveski yes Dr Rodriguez yes Miss Williams no Mrs Willies yes motion passes 81 that brings us to a motion that was previously on the table during the November 14th meeting there was a recommendation to um approve a resolution naming Jal uh November 14th Joel Ferguson impact day Mr nosk I need to clarify something with you it was moved to be tabled into the next meeting do I need a motion to take it off the table or is it just automatically if someone wants to move it it's good it was moved to postpone which is different than tabling so it is on the agenda now so that it's just good okay okay all right is there um a recommended motion to consider the resolution or are we going to uh keep it postponed well it is on the table so it was postponed to this meeting so consideration re resumes now okay so we had so last week yes we did um decide to table it and I just wanted to I don't have my notes have uh understanding of actually I wanted time to go over the resolution that um trusty Williams have presented to the board um and I I would want to I don't know how I would say this but I would want to postpone adopting this resolution until we have or considering adopting this resolution until we have a policy on um what do I want to say a policy on I guess it would be um naming days naming days yeah for for for individuals if that makes sense cuz we don't have a policy right now so I really don't have anything to go by me personally and I would I think we should um this should go before the policy committee and we look at something like that before we make a decision like this did you Dr Kavanaugh Madam president um I I really appreciate um what you're raising this more um it seems to me that we so we do have a policy about building naming and so when we decide to name a building after somebody that is something we have a policy about and so I agree that it would be nice to see like a parallel policy that gives us guidance around when we're we're choosing to name a day or any other sort of action um because right now the only guidance we have is specific to buildings okay I mean we don't have is the motion technically considered on the floor it's just it's technically considered on the floor so we have a motion on the floor if we want to um what we could do is we could either postpone it or vote it down until another um until a policy is brought forward that gives us better guidance on um better guidance on how to proceed in these type of situations Mr Crim can you postpone it to a I guess an indefinite date on until the policy set to re-review it or do we just shoot it down and then take it to the policy how do how does that work yes there are two subsidiary motions one is to postpone to a certain time which is what we did last week and the board could do that again to another certain time or postpone indefinitely but that essentially means that the board is U not voting on the motion and it it so that if that motion were to pass to postpone indefinitely no direct vote is taken the motion it doesn't automatically come back up later it's been disposed of without a vote on the resolution so at a future date when the board were ready for this it would have to reintroduce the motion that's the distinction between postponing or referring the motion stays alive until it comes back postpone indefinitely the motion is no longer an item of business but there's no direct vote on the resolution got it m president yes Mr LZ you know um Mr Ferguson was was obviously well known in lensing and throughout and by postponing and postponing this uh action um you know we're we're just you know um uh delay in maybe a tribute that that um outlift the community and and uh by not doing it you know it's uh um it's I I believe that it's it's kind of maybe counterproductive to our work we've talked about Dei we talked about all those other things and we have an opportunity to honor this man who um did a lot of good work politicians whatever and um I I personally don't see why we need to postpone it until we have a policy a policy can be drafted later on for any other resolution so that's that's my thought then that's what I believe M president sure thing Miss Mo um I found my notes oh with the policy or or the resolution excuse me I guess I also have some a few questions about about um the impact um that it would have on the district it says now it under um now it be resolved that as an alumnist of the laning school district support of the Lancing promise and a strong believer in education November 14th will now become known as the Joel Ferguson impact day in the laning school district one small change to impact greatness being someone who openly made changes while being humbled and while to help and cult cultivate others I guess that's I don't quite understand it's not specific enough like what impact would we want our district to do because we want it also reads that we want to implement this on a yearly B basis excuse me for the purpose of being helpers one to another that can create change agents who will make an impact in our school and communities I guess I want I it's not clear the the the language so I would the wording isn't clear so I would want to look at I guess how we can be more specific on what the impact is that that we're trying to do I don't quite understand Miss Miss Williams you may want to speak to this because it's your resolution that you put forth before the board the simplest way to do it is we be nice I mean mean every it's just that simple whether it be a kind word whether it pick up something help somebody that's any small deed that's good is an impact on people and I think we're making this more than what it should be and that's as simplified as it can be I mean a simple good morning you never know what that does for a person's day that impacts a person that impacts a change in a person's day or their perception it's the little things and it's creating character it's creating other things that we're not even looking at I I totally understand your your passion around this um I just yeah I I totally hear what you're saying I understand your your passion around um this proposed resolution um but I have nothing else to contribute Dr kav um so my concern about resolutions generally is without kind of a clear policy in place that says how the resolution will be implemented I worry that um it gives the appearance that the district is paying lip service um to what otherwise you know is is could be something impactful and important um which is why um I would support postponing until there's a policy in place again we have a policy in place for um how we go about um honoring somebody through naming a building and I would just like to see something similar so that I can more concretely understand what it means to be a person who's been selected to have a day named after them what it means to implement um having a day named after you I I just feel that having a policy in place is important because there are certainly many deserving um folks in the Lancing area and I would hate for us to just be paying lip service to the contribution that they've made to the community three go for for a policy I will recommend in the next 6 month we present this policy to the board well and I don't think we necessarily have to put a a time limit on it that's something we you know can internally hold our ourselves accountable to as a board um so if we postpone this indefinitely then we don't have to to to take any direct action on the on the motion and then you can bring it up with one is inally another one is if we want to create a policy well and my recommendation my recommendation is that we will postpone indefinitely for the purpose of allowing time to create a policy I I mean we have a motion on the floor so I'm either going to call the question or we need a motion to um table are there any additional questions or comments I would motion to table until such a time as the policy committee is able to create a policy around days of remembrance my second okay it's go ahead do go ahead Mr nosky so to clarify those are different motions to lay on the table is only for an intervening item the motion would either be postponed definitely to a set time or indefinitely mam predent how about I just motioned that we remove the recommendation all together how about about that well we have a motion on the floor so I in order for us to remove it off the floor then I postpone right that's how you remove the motion off the floor a member who makes a motion can request permission to withdraw the motion and the body can approve that request with a majority vote perfect who made the motion on November 14th who supported the motion it just has to be the person who made it not the person who supported it okay now does she need does Miss Williams need support for her recommendation to withdraw we just take a vote okay correct so it's been moved by Miss Williams who was the maker of the motion to adopt the Joel Ferguson impact day resolution to withdraw it from the floor are there any questions or comments about that I just have one question sure Mr can we as a board put it as an agenda item for the policy committee to review and hold them accountable to do it we can still do that we absolutely can still do that can we do that yes we can let's handle this motion and then I will U make that recommendation so the recommendation is to support the recommendation to pull this motion back off the floor all those in favor signify by saying I hi oppose same sign motion passes [Music] 90 Williams okay that brings us to discussion items I don't think we have to make a recommended motion that policy committee come to a pol come back to us with a policy on resolution days I think we can just say it cuz we've typically just done that recommended at the policy committee who is my policy chair Dr Rodriguez got it got it to the list of the policy committee I will call you okay next it's not I think it's a good idea to have policies yeah and we made a lot of mistakes and nominate schools and buildings and in some cases we didn't know the right people and um the pain of the majority in the Bo in the past 54 years then we are wise this is a wise B thinking that we have to do the things proper they we honor the eii and we reflect that in our policies thank you mother president that's a really good point that'll be a good way to as we move towards creating anti-racist and more Equitable policies that's a good place to to start in doing that so I I appreciate you plighting that um next item we would be discussion items we don't have any additional discussion items so Dr Rodriguez you still have the floor because we are on to report from secretary in announcement yes M president I'm so glad to name your name here today you are here with us for a few more times and we had to celebrate for the next three meetings uh November 25th P Day no school professional development Day November 26 to 29 already handled so next will be comments from the board are there any comments from the board this evening and Mr nosky just quickly um there wasn't a parent Community advisory committee meeting so I was able to attend the parent University meeting last night and it was a really great conversation with several other parents uh and the presenter on topics facing parents with real honest struggles um that they're you know concerned about with their students so I would just encourage any parents uh listening to consider coming to a future Workshop that's awesome thank you last was also oh sorry Dr Rodriguez thank you I've seen the last meeting some people were not here but we agreed to donate our typen from one meeting to the coast that they over here in Easter High School what's last GoFundMe setup that is since that last meeting now up to about $14,000 um so if anyone would like to contribute please reach out or we can all contribute as as a board all together um but yeah that's um that's it all right I already talked with the secretary that they come send the money from the group if that is okay thank you much sure we can organize um a group contribution if that's what we would like I certainly can send that communication out sort of thing
