have the opportunity to celebrate All of You Second this move spot to spot excellent all right so every year we have the opportunity and the pleasure and the privilege to recognize some amazing staff members um here in Mountainside and while again all of our staff work so tirelessly on a daily basis I am so excited to be able to recognize six very special individuals tonight so I'm going to begin with Miss Jennifer Smith yay so Jen who is our Peak teacher at Beachwood school was nominated ated by a number of her co-workers and parents as this year's teacher of the year Miss Smith who is in her sixth year at Beachwood school is a dynamic instructor who brings a smile to every student and staff member she works with she truly is the definition of a Hands-On teacher she has always seen fully immersed in activities with her students whether it is digging out pumpkin seeds for a lesson on Counting modeling a skill for her class Story Time on the rug or of our favorites dressing up as a turkey to enhance our Thanksgiving themed lessons Miss Smith is 125% in at all times and not just once but twice every single day and this is no easy feat to have as much energy in the afternoon as you do in the morning with your children she recognizes the importance of early childhood education and make sure that her afternoon students receive that exact same level of enthusiasm as one of her colleagues wrote Jen is amazing and is a pleasure to watch working with her young students who all seem to adore her she consistently comes up with new and creative activities for her preschoolers all of which incorporate all the skills needed to be successful for kindergarten and Beyond she is kind calm and has great control of her classroom and if you're ever in Beachwood and you're having a tough day go visit Peak because you can't leave without a smile so Jen please come on up we have a certificate [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right hey all right next up we have from Deerfield School Christine Delaney Mrs Delaney yay she's being recognized as the Deerfield School teacher of the year yep I thought caught the look she was all nominated by a number of her colleagues and parents Mrs Delaney is in her 19th year as a special education teacher in the Mountainside School District her commitment to student growth is evident in all she does and she has served as a strong partner with different staff members over the years as one of her co-workers wrote Christine is empathetic and able to make strong connections with the students she works with and never hesitates to go above and beyond when it comes to trying different strategies and coming up with creative interventions that make her classroom a positive environment for her children to learn additionally a parent shared she teaches in such a way that helps all students not just special education students and allows them to feel seen and heard without being singled out I attribute much of the progress that my son made in fifth grade both academically and socially to Mrs delany's expertise differentiation comes naturally to her we are so appreciative of everything you do and your dedication thank [Applause] you absolutely so in addition to our teachers of the year we also recognize through the state's program educational support Professionals of the year at Beachwood school I am very pleased to be re recognizing Mrs Amanda Summers gasio [Applause] as a district school psychologist and a dedicated case manager Amanda has been the go-to person for many staff members for support or advice she also played an integral role in helping to create and roll out our brand new successful lld program at Beachwood school which we are so thrilled to have expanded this year to Deerfield a coworker wrote Amanda never hesitates to lend a helping hand or give her honest opinion I can count on her to be objective yet kind in her ideas and responses on top of that she has a great personality that provides a warm and welcoming feeling for anyone who approaches her Amanda has a gift when it comes to communication and I greatly admire her for that we are very thankful for her dedication to the students and families of Mountainside for the past eight years and look forward to her ongoing support congratulations Amanda [Music] [Applause] next as our Deerfield educational support professional of the Year here at De at Deerfield I'd like to celebrate Mrs Christina Boris Mrs Boris has worked in the district for the past five years as a speech therapist f multitasking you know she dedicates herself to helping students with specifically identified needs in a way that helps them grow both academically and emotionally this is seen not only through her direct instruction but also her lunchtime group opportunities that she willingly provides to students we appreciate all of her efforts and dedication and this sentiment was reinforced through a nomination she received in which it stated Christina is engaging and always makes speech therapy fun for her students the children talk all the time about how much fun they have and how much they enjoy their sessions Christina was has a great ability to find projects and games that her students love doing but also teaches them valuable skills that they can use outside of their sessions in real life situations she is always willing to connect with her students in the way that is most effective for them which is challenging since she's really only with us two days a week as a part-time staff member Christina also makes the time to see her students in the classroom so she can help them with the language skills they need to better access the curriculum content and grow academically we truly appreciate all you do because I know that this is not the way that it is done in all other districts so I truly appreciate it thank you and [Applause] congratulations all right next up is a homegrown award that we have done we felt here in Mountainside and this was in place prior to my coming into the district was that we have other staff members we want to celebrate who may not always be a part of these Governor programs and so we have here at Mountainside a Beachwood and Deerfield support staff person of the year this typically applies to our power professionals our secretarial staff our custodial staff those who would not fall into those other categories I'm going to remember this there we go so at Beachwood favorite picture of all time we are so excited that Mr Antonio Negron is deserving of this recognition at Beachwood Mr Tony as the students know him is a very welcome addition to the Beachwood staff Tony came over to Beachwood from Deerfield this year to take over the vacancy that was left by the retirement of Mr mwan so no small task to come over he very quickly made Beachwood his home and demonstrates his pride in calling the building his on a daily basis as one staff member wrote Tony is so helpful he never makes you feel like a bother and is always going above and beyond to keep this building in the best shape you mention a concern and it is looked into and addressed almost immediately another summed it up beautifully by sharing since starting here Mr Tony has gone above and beyond in filling the shoes of his predecessor I don't even know where to begin with how grateful we are as a staff to have him join our Squad he is truly remarkable and we are so appreciative of the work done on a daily basis day in and day out he is constantly working does he rest no one knows sweeping mopping organizing safety building picking up trash off the playground in the rain handyman I thought this was the best Cricket catcher he does it all thank you Mr Tony and thank you from all of us for your [Applause] dedication thank you very truly appreciate it and at Deerfield School we are very excited exed to nominate and recognize with many nominations from her colleagues mandrea [Applause] Bay xandrea is simply amazing oh there we go then you have to are we videoing or pictures you got it absolutely I love it xandrea is simply amazing in addition to always being fully color-coordinated right down to her awesome selection of shoes and bags which by the way was commented on in more than one nomination so I'm not making it up xandre is part of a wonderful team that keeps the Deerfield main office running smoothly you would never know that she is just into her second year in the district as she has quickly made Deerfield and its School community Comm her family she warmly greets parents assists students with many daily aspects including basic technology troubleshooting I think we're going to go to Advanced pretty soon and has made tremendous strides with updating a wide variety of front office processes and procedures as a colleague wrote xandrea is a welcome addition to the main office and has made some wonderful upgrades in her first year at Deerfield she is the face of our school greeting visitors with a smile and a kind word our new families are in excellent hands when entering the district it is clear from conversations that she has taken the time to build relationships with some of the frequent visitors who rely on her for guidance she manages to juggle coverage needs substitutes and plans teacher and student requests ringing phones dinging doors maintenance calls and at times ill students all with a smile and professional attitude xandrea we are very thankful to have you working with us and are proud to recognize you this [Music] [Applause] evening congratulations to all of you we are so appreciative the on behalf of the board of ed for all of your work and all of what you do so I'm going to ask very quickly if we can do just one group pict real quick and then we're going to move on to the rest of our agenda I will turn my head if you all disappear in that first 30 seconds no harm no foul we understand thank you for being here on this cold evening [Music] I I wanted to personally thank each one of you for the dedication you have to all our Mountainside students um the common denominator for all your speeches were kids and that to us means the world so your job does not go unnoticed because we see it all here so thank you very much congratulations and now a group picture right yes we're gonna do a quick picture Jess I saw you had a camera can you take it for me oh you could Dan awesome and we know Andrea's dad well so ofing [Music] [Music] [Music] with e e um first of all as much as we recognize our staff I also want to recognize the Board of Education January is board recognition month and I want to thank all of you for the time that you put in on the board the work that you do the conversations that you have or try not to have on uh ball fields and other places and it's not easy holding this role within a town and I appreciate all that you do all of the support that you have provided and continue to Pro provide to the students and to the staff of Mountainside um at your SE seats tonight under District updates uh a couple of quick things one at your seats you do all have a copy of the five-year strategic plan that was delivered to us by New Jersey school boards it is a summation of all of the information that we've shared all of the topics and the pieces that we will be addressing as a district over the next five years um in order to um to recognize and to kind of have our guideline for us to follow the plan is also updated already on the district website so it is there for the community and there will be ongoing updates as we go um also this past month since our last meeting we've had uh the grades three to five concert was held um and really the students did an excellent job they're beginning band members um they will get so much better in Spring it will be a totally different concert like thewit go on but I mean the turnout was amazing it worked really really well with having them kind of work one after the other um going back to I think Mrs jenss you said it was pre-co was the last time that it was done in a way that really just followed one after the other and I think that it went very well for the evening um kudos to both of our music teachers uh Mr Mula was unable to attend that evening unfortunately like many of our community recently was failed by the lovely flu and other illnesses so Mr Rosen Bloom stepped in but to both of them for getting the children ready for the show um and that concluded quite a long uh concert season between both Beachwood and Deerfield so very happy to see those um upcoming we have the spirit night is coming up at the very beginning of February so that annual event will uh be taking place with lots and lots of people and uh hopefully a great evening for all and a lot of involvement from our eighth grade parents in helping to organize the event um as well as we are in the process of starting our midyear benchmarking so our I ready benchmarking has begun at grades 1 through five and our um linkit is beginning at grades 6 through 8 so really getting our students that midyear data take a look at their progress um both Mrs Burling Mrs jenss Mrs chrisa Foy everybody will be then working um Mrs rolu with the special ed teachers to look at that data drill it down um and I will not forget Mrs goldbeck who is the brains behind half of this and finding all of our data points and really that is the team who looks at it brings it to the staff and really looks at how do we drive instruction for the remainder of the year um especially as we move towards njsla fund testing month of of chaos um so all of those pieces are are ongoing and looking forward to seeing where the students stand at this point we are also having our linkit representative come to our Deerfield faculty meeting next week she will be meeting with the staff on and doing some training on how to use the data to create many checkpoints Within link using the linkit library which has standards based questions built into it so how can they pick a standard that the classes are working on and create a quick exit ticket or a quick quiz how to use the data they've expanded their science we all know as a board that you know across the state standardized test scores in science have uh definitely lagged behind our Ela and math but linkit is expanding that um service it's also expanding down to third grade and fourth grade to help our students kind of have another tool in the toolbox to prepare them for the nextg science standards that they will be tested on so just ways to expand that educational opportunity for our students um while the motion is later in the agenda I do want to mention the 2526 school calendar was sent out the final copy that is on the agenda tonight for approval was discussed with the mea calendar committee it was also discussed with the administrative team and it was discussed with the board curriculum committee so it's really been vetted on three different levels various opportunities and recommendations were made predominantly you're going to see it follows draft a that was originally shared with the board um with a few adjustments just in terms of the uh additional snow days if necessary um there was some adjustment at the recommendation of the board curriculum committee so if there's questions about that we can take it when we're at the motion or we can discuss it at this time Jen I I one this is small but um when I I looked at the board meeting dates that are in here would you characterize those as like placeholders on some of these I I had different dates for a couple and it could have just been me that I put these in way way back but I don't know if any of those changed late or again maybe it's on my end which uh month specifically mostly in the first half of this year there were a couple that like looked like I was like awful week so I don't know if that was just maybe it changed a while back yeah the March I'm going to actually tell you that on this attachment um and this is my error the March 17th one should actually should actually be March 10th it should be okay yes okay yes that one is incorrect on this draft okay so March meeting should be March 10th and April is that accurate in in this we're talking about 2026 right now yeah I was 25 26 oh no I'm sorry I was looking at the 26 dates the 25 and 26 sorry I was I'm sorry the 25 and 26 are you wouldn't be March March would be this is March 25 we changed the March 24 we are in 25 we're in 25 right so ignore the March 26 no no no that March is March 26 so it's next school year right right I got that so it's not impacting this current school year we don't know when we're meeting next year the 25 dates are in here the fall of 25 days are in year so these dates are accurate as my question so the only ones that right the only ones that have already been set by the board would be September October November December okay because you cannot set 26 January through June until your next reorg meeting so I see what Jordan's saying because October 21st in what we approved at the board meeting at the meeting for the Board of Education dates for October as well as December those dates are a week later than what was approved New York so the final if I'm correct in that you're saying what we approved two weeks ago was October 14th yeah no uh or November I think everything was off a week September October November and December if I'm not mistaken okay so I will go back and whatever is on here will be updated to reflect what the board approved okay okay yeah so the final copy will add will reflect what was approved two weeks ago at our reorg meeting got it that's it my apologies we had a number of different drafts going so yeah I'm I'm looking at from last meeting I think everything's a week okay it's off a week right everything is just off by Push by a week so the January 6 meeting yeah got it all right and I think to your point to 26 states are just placeholders until we do the re and things like your budget calendar comes out yeah yeah so you have to adjust that based upon what that budget calendar comes out right um the reorg is accurate at least for now right that January reor yes we're going to go so I will have this calendar that we approve this evening adjusted before it goes public to reflect the board meeting dates that were approved by the board on January 6th all right perfect my apologies for that as you can tell I don't even know what dates I'm just going today I'm here today okay that it um the only other thing I have is a big thank you to everyone for your understanding I know later in the agenda you are approving my letter of retirement um I truly appreciate everything we have quite a bit of work still to do as we go out the remainder of this school year so we will be working a lot together we will be doing so much uh positivity and but I truly appreciate the past six years they have been some of the most rewarding of my career I shared it with the staff this morning um Kelly threatened to read the letter before it made it to you guys I shared it with the school Community as well and truly appreciate the the feedback that I have gotten Mountainside is a very special place to be and I cannot imagine any place else to have finished out 37 years that's a lot of time um of of of education and progress so thank you I know we'll have other conversations as we go but I just appreciate everybody's understanding and support as as we move it forward and we find the next Absolutely Fabulous Fit for this District to bring it even further forward say that's not part of my Pap where I'm supposed to speak so I'm saving comments for like June right I'm not com I have a party to not if we don't approve it yeah2 just let me know I'll show up June not tell we're moving on to our business administrative report okay Berkeley Heights pleas uh sure so uh I now have the joy of doing this um I'll never be as enthusiastic as Jordan oh s come on I'll attempt to be optimistic uh but not this not this one this one was pretty uh so uh we had our reorg meeting uh up at Berkeley height I was able to attend that started off by welcoming the new members so there's three that had recently been elected so we went through the counts and swore them in uh the board attempted to elect a uh a president didn't go so well didn't pass that uh they attempted to elect the vice president same result uh this point we have no president vice president Berkeley Heights so what that means is they are now passing it back to the county superent and uh the we to note that uh County Superintendent where're going to be interviewing anybody who was uh interested and those should be happening I believe this week and we should have an answer Hope by the time we have a next board meeting or else you we'll uh somebody just to administer or run that session now from my understanding um my understanding um the county superintendent threw back the uh vice president has to be chosen by the board um that's my understanding at the moment I guess I'm just gonna hold official comment until we get through who gets pick because potentially I would think through the interviews maybe he sees something a good working relationship so I I'm optimistic um but I I don't know okay right so but yes that was the official language we got was that please I'll take care of the president I hope you guys can take care of the vice president but okay you know what we got things look forward to um we uh we agreed on our meeting calendar that took about a half hour it was a little contentious as well um the one thing I wanted to point out to you guys is that uh not even on the agenda was committees or committee assignments right so I know we've discussed here some Reliance on a committee to work through our Sen relationship um at least on the agendas that are public and I've seen we haven't even started what committees there would be or who would be on those committees they traditionally wait for the president to be elected so we could be a little bit on those in case that impacts any of your committee work right um okay just a couple things about new business uh this part I like um a lot of talk around oper request and the amount of money that that spending on requests specifically around the lawyers that are involved in those and comments were made that sometimes the lawyer has to review the C per requests twice if the same open request comes through and I was amazed to find out that even Board of end members are are submitting open request to get access information so um well I know we talked a lot here about cost and maintaining and figuring out ways to make this more affordable that was music to my ears that they were reviewing lawyer fees associated with Oprah um and then another thing that I thought you guys find interesting this December decided to abolish a policy that two meetings on their bylaws or policies right now what it is are on your first stream um it is going into so it's the policy we have it's 13 ones but they polished that that now it's only one re so see how that goes um future a little bit less structure um to how policies and bylaws would betic attitude it's beneficial and they get things done quicker maybe it's something we think ofet about anything Bo a little bit harder to manage but um he he allowed it from a legal perspective to see that was it thank you Mr thank you um moving on can I please have a motion to approve under administration's items do six removed com question just want to bring up one point real quickly on item five to establish this is not an additional lld program this is just a piece that but for the state to recognize that you have a new classroom space you just have to officially board approve so Mr Bru took care of all of the paperwork that was required by the state it just needs board resolution to support it being submitted yes Mike yes Jordan hman yes Vivian poo yes Candace car I please have a motion to approve on the budget and finance items one through eight move second roll please Dylan yes Mike yes Dan to see theatro yes Jordan Hyman yes a big thanks to Watts as always yes I just do want to real quick move say make a comment because it will happen before our next board meeting the speaker Mrs JS and Mrs Miss Boss set up of Mikey Fallen coming into the district I heard nothing but very very positive uh responses about him in other places I think but anybody that parents come out and this I've multiple times he's um performed presented in um the district I work in multiple times he absolutely amazing with our middle SCH student our high school student um he's really just unel and I parents if you have time make sure you and really great okay no it's yes the 19th it's a Wednesday evening in February and so the Watts Foundation really Grant and we're very excited to bring him in to talk about recognition of differences and seems like something very Dynamic he is he is great excellent thank you hey can I please have a motion to approve under Personnel items 1 through 12 move question now this is when I say part one H Janet we extend our heartfelt gratitude to our superintendent Janet she announces her I was shocked um her dedication to the children of mountain side has been truly inspiring through her leadership we navigated challenge good old coing that our education and support for our students remained un under her guidance our school achieved remarkable Milestones including earning ra prestigious Blen award thank you Mrs walling for your years of service not only to Mountain but education as the whole and commitment to Excellence your impact will be felt for generations to come and we wish you the very best in your retirement on June 30th I must say I know you're not leaving soon however couldn't go without expressing our here so you me I did not mean to do that I apologize I couldn't just let go without saying I appr the staff that I have here in front of me I cannot have done any of this without the support that exists and I am so so truly grateful and blessed to uh have been a part of it and I look forward to the next months and see what we what more fun we have you supported me as a board member and as a parent so I truly appreciate okay did I say roll call please yeah or I just lost any other comments or questions okay roll call please yeah car V okay can IE have a motion to approve under curriculum just item one any comments or question yes pord yes Vivian yeso yes Carmine um can I have a motion to approve under policy it so mov any questions coms Bill Dylan yes Michael Goodman yeso yes Carm ven any old business the only old business I think this is the right time to talk about it is last month we um ended our meeting with a uh Library committee that was on a Rota basis and according to our library director that just so um we're back to square one any suggestions any can I make just one comment which is I mean at least factually it can be because it used to be I mean you can back there was a rotation it was every meeting but I know at least when we came on the board rotation time took a quarter but I know it's not optimal that's how that's how it's not I get that because minutes and all that but it can be they don't want it for I totally get it totally get it I think checking with their like in with things it sta member according to the email yes these are things that I learned I honestly had no idea so I think that's something that I mean in SE work is a staff member in The District Board member that attends the library meetings on a monthly basis and they the STA M brings back a lot of information cretive team that really I think is more effective ucation and the things that are coming so I recommend that we look at maybe can be appointed by the superintendent that maybe hold a discussion to where the u a staff member however wants to peruse that discuss I know kind of discuss the N here but I'm makation that we have staff member um serving I thought I read that they' actually they could that that's at least the underlying there's a little bit more of a school library board member would do it like you said three or four employes and somebody else did unfortunately that's not what they're having served it the last two years they're not looking for that mostly because you V anything happened the meeting before so when you move from mat with a different member Vivan and I split up the last couple months that that's the problem they have with it I'm happy the semester's over and night 8 9:30 on Monday nights so I'm happy to help after my course is over but that's not until until June so this is obviously something that I disc all of you um recation and um I guess hear from Mrs wall so I think that you know I think honestly the ultimate is the is the continu of having you know AO with the library in order to I mean I've been on board it has always been a board member district has always been a board member but I understand and having read their emails where um believe they're always Zoom they hybrid you can go in or I used to before going they always have zoom as an option oh okay it's okay so it's so if the person cannot be there right they might like for somebody to be there live but if necessary it Zoom okay previously for Co I went every month and then after when we shared I did I did a zoom um so what I'm going to do is you know again based upon if the board does not I will take a look at the information that came back in the email I will take a look at um where we stand in how we could eventually make this the most consistent opportunity um and I will be able to report back to the board after taking further at it sounds good I appreciate it y do we have a full list dates calendar okay I can I was say somebody forward me if they need aard I'm happy to be that person um you can't make the meeting I'm saying you need aent go to the meetings I would and you know what if they work with our students I think that's the least that we can do so um I'll take a look at I'd like to bring up something decided to change executive sessions to seven so with the understanding that we would change it to seven because there's a lot of times that we session we don't utilize the full hour um Etc so today we come a second ex session and of the change time whereas if we started atur we would have not need session I am proposing we go back to years I don't think we use our second executive sessions when we need to on certain meeting dates we've got a lot of things going on in the district obviously Janet threw a little to our plans but I think there's a multiple that me to discuss during an executive session I felt like today's was right to try to get through things we still have to meet after this meeting um I think if we started back at we able to accomplish to accomplish so then if we need a second example we'll have one but this I can foresee already is going to be regular occurrence um so all I can say is that for whatever time to address um I don't like to be rushed and I refuse to be rushed so I 6:30 is the time that we need to start we have a year worth of dates on our calendar to be here on time that's the least I get it that we all have emergencies but that's the least that we can do be here in 6:30 so we can start right and just start going so I'm for starting at 630 I you know I don't want to be rush I the full hour together because I do feel a half hour is very Rush by the time we're done here and then we go I just felt like even even if we wanted to say something we didn't have time to not time we couldn't ask any questions it felt the half hour felt and then now we have to remember what we were gonna say to go back into it just wasn't didn't feel but with that said that I'm not one you all know me I'm very patient very understanding but I can be right yeah I I mean my comment is that today respect I don't think we' ever get an hour I just this exact whatever we could have started two hours early just stuff that need to happen and yeah I just I I still think that over the course of 12 or me perhaps this year um especially will requires you know I'd rather be efficient possible so um majority rules my vote is 6 for efficiency S I go with 6:30 with going to Second executive we have to rep it again 6:30 do we need motion yeah I think we do yeah then we'll advertise if what's but here at 6:30 if that's Cas I just we're late at 6:30 so hard to get 6:30 consist basis me if if we do 6:30 okay so can I please have a motion you like sex better honestly I say start at 7 Ando an hour EXA start the meeting at a uniique perspective here start a public meeting after 8 o' I mean do it at you can do it at eight but you could never come out I was saying seven it's when I was start probably last year they maybe came out and said beate but they didn't out now is that something we can do start at 6:30 and if we run Le no no no it starts and if we come out at 745 absolutely me we all know we all know there's months that we have to you know that but we're facc right now and we're fac for a lot of um important topics that big for our community and for our students so with that said um I guess I'll make the motion to go back to starting at 6:30 knowing that we have our dates and trying our best get our meeting as close and as safe as we can can I have a motion can you already made yeah I um any comments questions I'm going by my notes bill um R call please Bill Dylan no M Goodwin yes no yes sh yes okay this time I would oh any new business reports from any committees uh I can say did January 10th um myself Mike with Janet um and D basically shared a series of which we'll in more detail in exec and we've got if we need with meeting okay this is for oury committee not for our B Heights that's correcty Heights we have no committee yet corre no no no we have a committee I'm sorry I'm looking at bill now you I see you and your BH and uh okay just hang out not in the cafeteria that would be in the committtee yeah met but we discussed the calendar you just approved it um we discussed some new um hires that accepted
