mailed to the Nutley Township Clerk sent to tap into Nutley sent to the nut the Nutley sun on January 4th 2024 and posted on the district website would everybody please stand for the flag salute unit States americe for all roll call Mr balamo here Mr vaglia here Mrs danek Martin here Dr deia here Mr fragels Mr kazinski here Mrs Quirk here Mr Scotty here Mr pero here can I get a motion for approval of the minutes make the motion approve minutes all in favor I anyone opposed okay any correspondence none okay tonight we have our presentation um Mr B do you want to present um our guest here tonight uh yes I'd invite the board uh to go sit in the uh in the auditorium for a PowerPoint presentation [Music] okay uh while we're getting set up tech-wise um I would like to welcome Peter and Nicole from smarter cell 360 uh to the district uh last year the district received a three-year Grant uh to Pilot an app based positive mental health support platform uh this year the district will introduce a pilot program to secondary students and staff members mental health and and student staff Wellness is a priority to nle Public Schools this optin support will be available this fall of course with parent permission for students and can provide another layer of support for students and staff uh that choose to enroll so Nicole I'd like to welcome you up Peter I'd like to welcome you up uh we'll have your presentation up thank you for coming to nutly tonight awesome all right good evening everyone it's nice to all see you all here and nice to see a lot of friendly faces I'm Nicole forner I'm the chief strategist at 360 I'm Pete Pasa and I am the founder and chairman awesome so we're gonna I'm going to talk a little bit about what why why we are here today um and we are happy to partner with the nutly school district to offer a few things so this PowerPoint is called empowering student development with AI a couple of the talking points that I'm going to discuss of course is um the problems that a lot of the students are facing the features of this per personal development coach our curriculum that's offered the benefits next steps and conclusions as you know there's a shortage of Behavioral Health clinicians can somebody Advance the slides first please Awesome's jump down page [Music] three that work awesome all right thank you so as you know there's been a shortage of Behavioral Health clinicians um actually a 4.5 million shortage as far as to treat a lot of the ongoing mental health issues that's occurring so at 360 we're offering a alternative Solution that's preventative to teach students about themselves um and we want to bridge the gap to eliminate stigma and also have the capacity to treat and prevent and give opportunities to the kids if you want to go to the next slide please we offer personalized support so every time a student enroll their everyone experience is completely unique and different based on the curriculum that that they choose also how this works is it's a two-way communication um mechanism so how we typically do we'll do a live enrollment with the students um once we get parents permission they'll receive a notification and at that point once they enroll in the program they'll receive daily text messages that's two to three per week when they first start that text message can start off by saying how are you feeling today once the student click on how they're feeling today it can be something like happy stress finals coming up um and typically that prompts the AI That's the AI system that we use to send them either a curriculum or a breathing exercise or a video to deal with one of those things that they're recognizing that's an issue for them even if they click something like I'm feeling happy or they type I'm happy my day is great they'll give something to support and sustain that feeling also when I mentioned and anxiety reducing practices um as Peter often say that breathing exercises especially box breathing has been around since the birth of Christ and that's one of the things that we introduce in this curriculum as far as like breathing exercises if you can go to the next slide should be on number six please thank you thank you awesome so we have a door Focus right we want our students to be better athletes better kids better siblings to their other siblings we want them to be better students to Excel for themselves personally and also academically so that's our Focus so our curriculum includes a few things this is just a few and of course they can adapt based on what the students are clicking on or some of the feedback that we're getting from the district the curriculum includes things such as bullying emotional intelligence grief management social relationships Stress and Anxiety testing anxiety and understanding oneself the so move to seven please or eight there we go don't work there we go awesome thank you so again this is a scalable to be able to address the needs at a preventative measure first that you can literally enroll the entire student body as well as the parents the administration faculty staff guidance counselors whoever so this is already built in and also is a specific so depending on if this is a feature you want to enact um the parents have the ability to mirror and see what their children and students are clicking on as well so that's another benefit um and also all of this is data driven so again if we notice a spike and uptick in a lot of the students clicking on bullying or test anxiety we'll beef up and add more things to kind of deal with that as well all right we we're also able to notify the principles of the school that there's something going on we don't retain any individual information but every time a student clicks on say The Bullying module we expect the the modules to be relatively level but let's say that bullying module is spiking up that would be an indication that there's something going on in the school that the administration and teachers need to be aware of it's a way of taking the temperature of the student body without retaining any information on any individual student awesome and what do that look like for your for your kids and your students so when they again enroll they'll get a dashboard with a a bunch of emojis where they're showcasing how they're feeling for that day right they also will have access to this curriculum that involves a lot of modules such as videos um articles and breathing exercises as well um how do this apply to the parents again you have the capability of seeing what they're using and accessing we also have it built in a es escalation process if something should happen that deserves the school attention or parent attention as well um and again this is all to um make the students better Nicole if I may of course there are Reams and Reams and reams of data to support what we're doing with the students but just anecdotally a business associate of mine told me that his son who's enrolled in a very fancy private school is struggling to get his SAT score up to the level that his son wants it to be because he intends to apply to Cambridge University and he's had tutors he's had this he's had that and the young man's stuck in the the low 1200s they don't have smarter S I suggested that he use one of our breathing exercises not the whole test module to reduce testing anxiety just a simple box breathing exercise so I sent him a link to one of the videos that we use in our anx manager testing anxiety module he got it on an evening let's see that would been last Tuesday uh he took his next practice practice exam Wednesday evening so less than 24 hours of time his score went up to a 1360 about eight and a half perc if my math is right just by getting him to calm down and in this young man's case I know how badly he wants to do well he was putting so much pressure on himself he couldn't perform well these things work and they will help your student be better at whatever they choose to be better at it's why we're here uh we have deployed this before it it's why we were able to get a a grant to to come here to this District we had great success with it we have revised our program dramatically since that initial beta test it has a much more friendly user interface there's much richer and deeper content but where we are today is not where we'll finish with program at the end of the school year uh we will continue based on the clicking activity and what we see and the feedback we get from teachers and administrators to update the program and revise it it's a very difficult time to raise your children we all know it and we're trying to do something positive with it and we are thrilled that Nutley is participating with this we are open to any questions that that you may have but before we take questions just real quick do we have any parent how many pars do we have in the room a handful any questions that you have please um you mentioned that the data is know the data not Also menir let's just say students talk something serious not serious that that is great question uh if a student were to text that to us what they would get back is that there isn't a live person to answer your question however these are the resources that are available here in this district and I believe the resources that we've listed for this District are the New Jersey hope line and the 988 suicide line but when something like that comes up we do notify a principal we have a notification process uh it's a very delicate balance for us to walk the the users the kids will tell us things because there's nobody on the other end and that that truth serum factor is really important for them to get things off their chest however if we breach that trust and say Johnny over here said something and then he had to go to the school psychiatrist Johnny will tell everybody and the program will go down the drain it is a really really difficult balance to walk and I'll be honest with you that we lose sleep over it all the time it's as though there is no good right answer only students mod there are some teacher specific and students uh teacher and uh parent modals but for the most part when you look at the content you're going to see that while the reading levels are geared to the right ages and things like that the modalities but the tools that we use are applicable to any age uh I love the Box breathing example because the Navy Seals have been training with box breathing now for three decades a Navy SEAL that is well practiced in in that particular modality is able under the worst possible conditions a human can imagine in a period of 90 seconds to lower their respiration rate lower their blood pressure clear their mind and make a cogent decision under the highest levels of duress so while we Advocate actually that that parents start teaching box breathing to their children when they're four years old instead of doing a a timeout do do 90 seconds to two minutes of box breathing with your top and start instilling a skill in them that they could use when they're 40 years old and not just four their their skill level continues to advance it's like reading a great novel when you read a great novel you see what was there in your mind when you were 20 you go back and you read it again when you're 50 it's an entirely different book because of what you brought brought to it so the skills are life skills they should stay with an adult or a child for life it's just the level at which it's introduced awesome and to go back to your question too we do have stakeholders built in so do student have the capacity again to pick a guidance counselor or that cool aunt that's only like 10 years younger than their parents that they can once they're clicking on these emojis if they indicate stress it will alert those stakeholders which the kids usually use a term like my rider dies and it can pick four people that's involved in them going through this program is this specifically smartphone related for children that don't have that or related like how does everyone in the district get access because it seems at least that like are not going to get this so if I'm correct it's supposed to BEP and it's not cell phone based only they have the capacity use it on their school issue devices um and if they don't have internet when they get home they can download um a module and review it when they do get home any other questions I have a question so [Music] my my programmers my programmers don't like when I say this there there is no such thing as artificial intelligence because computers have yet to become sentient and they've yet to have an original thought what we have are really really really complicated and cool algorithms that help Drive the responses that we provide and that's the fancy answer the the base answer is if we broke this down and got out a giant sheet of paper there' be a decision tree and it would all break up start that had question thanks any other questions awesome thank you guys for your [Applause] time thank you all very just like thank Peter Nicole this is again 712 optin you're rolling out this fall um paid for through a grant we received from new New Jersey Department of Education so thank you so much for coming Peter Nicole uh thank you we can return parents the Board of Education other key stakeholders uh as we go throughout the year for feedback and changes I would like to draw your attention at uh Finance resolution number 14 a a series of donation and Dean stansky another former teacher is donating um a piano worth $1,800 thank you for all those donations um would also like to highlight the recommendation of Mrs Jackie D'Or to the diverse stakeholders and interviewed candidates with all central office staff participating in the second round Mrs D'Or has been in District for over eight years and her experience in proven the buildings ready for opening day next week uh Mr B provided the committee on an update to Personnel uh and we also spent quite a bit of time talking with Mr Dita uh on what we should expect to cover in our ongoing Finance meetings in the upcoming months uh we have not scheduled a finance committee yet for September 20 uh excuse me for September but we expect to meet again thank you Mr baglia we now come to the portion of our meeting where we allow members of the public to address the board in this section we allow comments on reports resolutions and all School related matters our board regulations number 0167 allow 20 minutes for these communications each person shall be limited to three minutes and we ask that you try to stay within this requirement speakers may speak more than once only after all others wishing to speak on a topic have been heard all statements will be directed to me as a chairperson and no one May address board members individually please be reminded that if your statement is too lengthy abusive obscene irrelevant or redundant your participation may be terminated comments concerning District employees and or students will not be responded to please remember to state your name and address each and every time you address the board for questions where the board may not have immediate answers the board will take information and respond to you at an appropriate time does anyone have any comments no we reviewing that list I did see some of the staff members that were received reduction Force notifications were ahead for this current year would you be able to share the exact number of tenure staff who were able to go ahead and return I I don't have that number with me but we were able to return staff as positions became available as we discussed okay great thank you an additional just follow-up question to that is um the presentation tonight was great from and I see how it's gonna be applicable to students and hopefully it to staff as well would availed himself to that but obviously this past year has been a difficult difficult for parents teachers staff students in the district is there anything special planned for staff as far as professional development or additional resources they might need as there's been a lot of movement throughout this District that they might as we've seen a lot of resignations of key staff members that uh anything we do to try to prevent this moving forward sure we're always conscious of our uh mental health and wellness of our staff for this year uh we're looking to uh continue on with some of the goals we set last year uh introduce um similar uh type strategy IES as well as when we plan PD be mindful of how many people have moved back and forth so I think to answer your question directly um we will try to meet staff where they're at with their anxiety about too many things and try to scale that down to what we can accomplish with the resources we have this year great thank you and then um additional question at a previous meeting I asked you about the gifted and talented program and I know it was was going to be reworked um school starting next week do we have an update on that current currently our gift and talented program will look different than did last last year with our staff member returning to the classroom based on our available resources we are hopeful to give gift and talented a two to threee look uh to rebuild it into something much more sustainable and much will much more have an impact I believe the gift and talented program comes with a restructuring um of several areas of our district uh to make it a worthwhile Adventure but I do think gift and town will be present this year but it will look different um based on um some classroom things when do we expect to know what it's going to look like for this year uh we hope to roll this out with the beginning of the school year in our curriculum sessions okay great and then uh just an additional question and the business administrator's report I'm sorry I may talked about the review of the RFP for the Healthcare broker I know that the contract for iMac was renewed through September 30th what is our current status of that RFP process if you're able to share that Mike's transitioning and I've been kind of going through that RFB process so if you don't mind I can answer that question yeah we're we're still in discussions with the board regarding all of our rfps at at this time but it's gone out for bid do we have anything else besides iMac that we're aware of or that you can share I I am just not I don't have an attorney here I'm not sure what I can share publicly what I can't so I'm going to defer on that question right now all right and then just lastly I know my time is up I just want to say thank you to the board for um as a Lincoln School parent to see those pictures of the auditorium that work I was definitely had my doubts I was going to be done this summer so I know we're getting the chair so it's going to look different for a while to the chairs are in but as I thank you for the board for their hard work and the District of hard work to go ahead and get that started because that was a big loss for the school this past year and as well as a thank you to the board as well for swiftly hiring uh Mrs D'Or as the principal of Lincoln School we look forward to welcome her to Lincoln School and working with her as it's a be ensuring a smooth transition to start of the year so I appreciate that thank you thank you anyone else have any comments uh hi Kim van W 34 IV pleas um just have a couple questions um things that unfortunately you know parents here through the grap Vine of different things um and unfortunately uh being our my son was part of the even though there's many grades that were affected by covid we were like the kindergarten class that started it all with computers um so just a couple different areas one being that have heard that fourth grade is no longer getting one one toone computers Chromebooks are not being given to them they're going to have what they've kind of done in the other grades which is when the computers are available not one to one um and that curriculum for fourth grade has been Chromebook necessity for so many years how and what are they going to be ready for since they're not getting that in fourth grade when it seems like every year they've lost something of not being in school to half being in school too I know at Radcliffe we lost out on many things due to some Personnel things that happened um activities that they didn't get projects that weren't done due staff not being there and now fourth grade we're not going to have computers so how is that going to be addressed and how are they going to keep not falling behind which every year they've done socially academically and emotionally yeah I I can comment on the first part I know that when we entered um you know talking about a lot of the resources we have to keeping things in place um Chromebooks will not be one to one for fourth grade you're you're correct that will be communicated by the district um although we have thought to keep that in place as we went to the summer we realized that was not a realistic opportunity based on the resources we have um I will say that uh our principles are strategizing um to have technology in school uh for those students and how that will affect the curriculum we're still working through as to what we can do on schoy what we can't do right now so I think um while we are um faced with the reality that you know we will not have one1 Chromebooks in fourth grade we are strategizing ways to keep very similar processes going and if need be um have classroom sets of Chromebooks and different things especially for testing okay and that so along with that going into like obviously the budget for the prev like for oning ongoing years are they going to be the guinea pigs like in fifth grade they might not get Chromebooks either no there's a way to know that but that's a possibility it's it's very difficult I think you know um with a new business administrator State monitor coming in we're looking at everything a little closer now we will continue to for the next two to three months um while we do not anticipate certain things certain things will become a reality as we look at the resources we have so I cannot answer that question What will what will the future hold our goal is to um provide every opportunity we have for our students that includes Chromebooks but uh we must look at what's sustainable in our district right now one other big area that affects um there's I believe our guidance counselors being um doing two different schools at this point along with uh not having a behaviorist anymore along with not having a director special services uh how for for a parent who has a child with an IEP along with those type of Social emotionals and had Chromebook worked into his IEP for him and others what what like we were told it wasn't I knew there was going to be Cuts things of that nature but it does seem like a lot of heavy-hitting processes with these children who need these resources how a principal can't do it all one person at least in the elementary schools so what is being yeah how is it going to be help for these children to have those opportunities that are being taken away from them yeah I would say um just answer them in the sequence you talked about the counselor first you know at one point prior probably did two to three years ago we did share counselors through Elementary I don't think it rless school what school yeah um so it was more between Lincoln and Spring Garden school and when we assessed where the sharing should take place it it looked more reasonable between springarden and rackliff school for this Cy so one counselor for about 700 children seems reasonable it doesn't seem reasonable the resource we had we had to unfortunately look at the Staffing we we brought on over the past couple years and see that it was unsustainable at that point so we had to kind of go in in Reverse to be honest and and go through that um your second question I think was about Chromebooks for an IP student all IEPs will be followed through with through all this process and if there's something on an IEP the district will follow through I think you went next into the structure of special services special services will have leadership uh we are reorganizing some things in central office um that will go on for the next uh month or so with the board we'll talk through with them um but students will have support through special services everything um will be arranged so leadership is present in that department okay and if I may ask one more question in regards to the uh um Food Services uh with it being the same company understandable we can't control who puts bids in and of those nature did they provide any guarantee that with how hard the lunches were especially at the elementary school level being cold and a lot of the time so have they given you any sort of assurances of what they're changing on their end to make sure that our children are getting hot lunches versus many times which I know was has been talked about with this specific company since we've had them sure I can tell you that uh they've been in District three or four times meeting with myself Miss MERS Mr Dita uh we have talked about um some equipment that may help our our situation maybe some operational shifts in um we also talked about the expectation to improve the food services and here's what we're hearing we also invited them to come speak at board meetings and with our parent groups so they could hear firsthand and and we reminded them that this is a one-year contract and uh the board will go out for RFP if needed next year wonderful thank you very much thank you anyone else wishing to come up for a [Music] comment Mark Jacobson 115 Margaret Avenue um just that was my first time hearing about the Chromebook um so I have a stu I have a daughter who's going to fourth grade at Lincoln School was looking forward to the gifted talented program kept on talking about all summer about getting her a Chromebook so obviously I'm going to have to break some difficult news to my daughter as well I mean I'm a parent that's part of a job of being a parent um you mentioned not going to be one to one do we have any idea right now we talking about one to two we're talking about five Chromebooks for a classroom do we have any ideas of what we're looking for yeah I I think um we're looking at a classroom of Chromebooks for fourth grade we're looking at the possibility to share them between classes and certain times we're looking at additional resources in school base to support students while they're in school and then just one additional question you probably don't know the answer to this but at any given time how many extra Chromebooks does the district have because like I know for example last year when Lincoln School had a go remote for a few days due to the fire Chromebooks were made available to any any student who needed within district and I think 181 or something like that was given out so surely there seems to be Chromebooks within the district that could go ahead and be used for fourth grade students already yeah I I can't speak to exactly where those Chromebooks came for or how many extra we have in District but uh in my understanding uh we have devices in our district that are building based and if needed those those building based devices can be loaned out in an emergency such as Lincoln School fire okay thank you thank you anyone else wishing to come up make a comment okay seeing none can I get a motion to close the public comment p motion uh Miss Stan Martin would you take academic resolutions yes Mr President I'd like to move academic resolutions one through five is written
