there somebody to go next that's it that's all right thank [Applause] you thank you president okay uh it's getting real expensive to be giving out student of the month Awards we see uh everybody's going to be trying to one up each other here real soon uh I can already I can already I can already see it is uh uh 6:36 we'll give uh a quick uh we'll take a quick break for four minutes allow those who want to leave to leave of course you are all welcome to stay uh as we go through the rest of the business of the school board so feel free to stay if you like but we'll give everybody about four minutes to go uh and I've just used up one of them so three minutes to go uh e e e ipation we come to the part of the meeting where the public has the opportunity to um address the board if it so desires public participation is one-way Communication in which uh members of the public are asked to address the full board with the understanding that board members will not be able to individually rece respond trusty Smith would you like to read the public comment guidelines yes because the Oort Board of Education values public meetings not just meetings in public we welcome public comments on school issues speakers are asked to express themselves in a civil manner with due process for the dignity and privacy of others who may be affected by public comments the public comment portion of the meeting cannot be used to make personal attacks against a school board member or a school district employee that disrupts the order of the meeting and is totally unrelated to the manner in which the member or employee performs his or her duties speakers should be aware that if statements violate the rights of others under the law of defamation or invasion of privacy such comments may be result in legal liability most comments can be concisely stated in three minutes and the board respectfully ask that comments be remain focused on the topic or issue at hand and not be directed as specific Personnel or board members okay are there any members of the public who wish to address the board yes we have Cheryl web Williams um that was the student of the month is that the one that that was my card they were here for student of the month they didn't know they had to okay are there any is there anyone who wishes to address the board go what going twice okay gone we will go to item number seven information item 7 a we have Baker Tilly Municipal advisers Mr Nelson uh relative to the authorizing the issuance and delegating the sale of bond series 3 great uh thank you for having me this evening uh we not be voting tonight just information only uh about moving forward with the third sale of the voter approved bond issue which was done several years ago uh so a typical process in school districts you have one election the community approves several million dollars then you do those Bond sales over time as you do construction processes and we've reached the third or Final Phase of that election uh which will be about 22,39 5,000 so the authorizing resolution came from TR and law firm uh that is in your packet and we be voted on at the next meeting and if the board authorizes that transaction uh we're scheduled then to have the actual Bond sale on February 3rd so on February 3rd at about 10:00 we have a meeting with Angel Sharice everyone on the call and that's where we receive bids for the bonds uh that's where Underwriters and Banks uh push their bids and their interest rates and then by state law we have to take the lowest your interest cost or best deal for the school so that would happen on February 3rd and then after that uh we are looking at Bond closing on February 27th uh that's when the funds would hit the account and those monies would then be available to do the improvements uh for anything that you're completing at the school district so that's the timeline we're looking on the third and final phase uh everything's gone well with the uh first two transactions and then that would complete the voter authorization again that was approved previously so everything's on schedule everything's looking good and then I can answer any questions you have and again that would be voted at the next meeting this is just for information only this evening I have any questions or first of any other additional comments from Administration no this is just a third and final phase of the bond questions from members of the board trusty HOA um what what will be the total amount that will have been raised from these three bonds Al togethere of these three rebond sales I should say certainly uh the voter approved 54,4 45,000 at the time so this will be the final phase in there anything else I'm sorry 54,4 45,000 anything else appreciate it yep thank you for having me this even y go to item 7B I assume this is where he was Vol told uh uh we're going to the elementary math curriculum resource pilot this Murphy it's always great to have the support of my colleagues um in this work we can't do it alone uh good evening to our board board president uh our superintendent in our cabinet to our audience members um those that are interested in the business of the district I am Shaya Murphy the director of curriculum here of Oak Park schools and I just have an informational item for today um it is included on the agenda however just wanted to highlight that um we need to engage in a math an elementary math resource pilot uh for this school year to identify a new resource for elementary mathematics um we have had the same resource for a number of years due to so many reasons um first uh Co came and then we adopted an Ela program a reading program and so now it is time to uh jij up our curriculum resources um in relationship to elementary mathematics so we've already done a couple of um leg work items with surveying staff to identify resources that they were interested in piloting and exploring more and we will align those to our district priorities um that we've already identified for this year and so we have a couple of teachers from our four elementary schools um who will be assisting in piloting these materials and giving their feedback in relationship to it so that we can identify resource before the end of this year and when we have to submit uh budget items to our superintendent and for the board um so we'll come back with additional information um once I get those teacher teams together um to Pilot these material materials um for adoption for the 25 26 school year any questions question from members of the board trust Smith yeah I just got one question in regards to the three different applications or these U these these these programs how how would yall measure I mean it's like based like on a rubric or yes yes so there are a ton of tools already available to us through Oakland schools and other uh Partnerships um um that talk about high quality instruction and then we'll think we'll align it to the the vision and the goals that we've already set for the district around our get better now strategies our gradual release of responsibility our uh personalized learning pth all of those things we will take into account as we choose a new resource and and the course usability uh for our staff and for our students that's aligned to our goals you're welcome corporate demog demographics from other districts yes um so we um I can get more information for you but definitely when they we did a survey for our teachers for them to recommend materials that they were interested in either from what their own children are using or what they've um identified in the county or even outside of the county that has been successful with demographics of students that mirror ours right so we want a resource that um is reflective of our student body that has ease of usability for our staff and for our students and will get us the gains and the achievement that we are seeking so we definitely took that um into account as we were thinking about um resources to choose anything else from other members of the board okay very good appreciate it thank you ask [Laughter] fory I'm not fool with y'all we come to item eight Communications uh besides finger snaps or commic for members of the administration for members of the board trusty hay um thank you president Elvin um this is my last board meeting for um at I joined the board in July of 2009 in the beginning of the Obama Administration for those who remember those times um and it's really been a uh an honor to serve on behalf of the community on this board and to serve alongside so many dedicated um dedicated people I want to there's a lot of people I want to thank and I'm not going to thank all of them now I definitely want to thank my family for their support and thank the entire District staff I think um I know uh you know the the entire District staff who work every day so in such a committed way to support our students and to carry out the vision and the mission and the policies that are set by this board um the the dedication of our Administration and of the superintendent that I've had the honor to work with is inspiring um two people I do want to thank individually because I think they're the only two who um who outlasted me here on this this at this table or at these meetings and one is Miss Greer who in such a dedicated way make sure we're prepared for every single board meeting um and takes care of everything behind the scenes and then Mr NY who has been hiding in the back there for 15 15 years and has been serving this District almost his entire life and that that commitment and that dedication is is really something that we um that we all gain from I want to I want to share three things that I learned from my time on the board and I hope it's useful for others that hear this and especially for my colleagues who will be here to carry this vision and this Mission forward and our new board members and I'm so happy that some of our new board members were able to be here I think that's that really speaks to their dedication to this District that they're coming to these meetings to be prepared to hit the ground running when that time comes so three things that I learned one thing that I learned is that the least powerful person in any district is an individual School Board member individual Schoolboard members can't do anything it's only when we join together with three other board members that we have a say in anything that happens in this district and so the least powerful person in any school district is the individual School Board member and the most powerful we can be is when we bring the entire Community together when we're looking at defending our own territory or looking at things through that really narrow lens of what's going to work well for me or you know the people that that I care about that that's the least powerful we can be as a district that's where we see things start to come apart and we've seen that in these years that I've been on the board the most powerful we can be is when we think about what works for the entire School District the students and the community the parents and the taxpayers and everybody that makes Oak Park School District what it is when we think with that wide angle lens when we think big that's when we can be powerful so that's the first the first lesson that I learned the second lesson um the second lesson that I learned in from this position is that um you know my my favorite book growing up and it was a book I had the honor a few times of reading topra School District students in March's reading month um is the book by uh by Dr Seuss urle the turtle it's a story about the king turtle who builds his kingdom by stacking all the other turtles because he knows the he's the king of all he can see so if he can see more he's going to have more power but it's that turtle at the bottom that is carrying the weight of the entire stack that eventually brings down the whole thing there's two ways to look at leadership I think and that's what I learned from that from that story and I continue to carry with me and I've seen it over and over again in this role um there are people who get higher and higher and use that to hold power over others there are people who go higher and higher and they use that to carry responsibility for more they can see and effective leadership lasting leadership happens when we grow our picture of what we are respons responsible for when we take on more responsibility rather than putting that responsibility on the person at the bottom of the tower um in this District our students are the ones who are depending on us for what they need and that's our that's a big responsibility we take and we need to step up and so as I transition now from my role as a board member to my role as a citizen and you know I'll still be watching I'll still be involved trusty elect Taylor asked me for my um Tyler asked me for my phone number because we're going to be talking as we as we carry forward in this District the third thing I wanted to the third I wanted to share the third and maybe the most important lesson that I learned um would is that um we've always done it this way is not a good reason to keep doing things we've always done it this way is not a reason to stop doing it either we need to consider every single decision ask those tough questions come to these meetings prepared and and in a thoughtful way really decide what's going to be best for our students for our community because that's how we grow and that's how we have grown and I hope that that growth that we've seen over that I've been blessed enough to be a witness to from this table that it that we can continue to see that in this District um again I want to thank you for your patience and for all of your support I want to thank my colleagues on the board for stepping up and for those who are coming in it's so much easier to depend on someone else to run for that school board seat or to come here on Monday nights to to make those decisions it's so much easier to stand you know on that side of the room where I hope to be and being here on this side making those decisions taking that responsibility that's the hard thing so thank you for for doing that and thank you to the district for everything that um that I've that I've gained in these 15 and 1 12 [Applause] years trusty Smith yes um actually I didn't know this was your last meeting but um I want to thank you I want to thank you for your service your commitment your due diligence to the community um you and I you actually helped mold me into the board member I am today because you remember from when I started from the beginning we had some rough times which manifested into better times because of the time that we spent and by me watching you as one of our leaders and how you handle governing from your position you you did a great job and I'm I'm proud to have witnessed that and um just want to uh say that not only did I gain a fellow Boardman but I gained a friend so I just want to thank you for all you've done your service to this community and I wish you the best and everything else you do moving forward brother anything else from members of the board uh so I know we do have several departing board members um I know this is your last meeting you're not going to make the one on yeah on the 19 um this is your last one next week next publicly uh because we won't won't be recording that one um so want to thank um pres we trusty ho appreciate appreciate all your your time and your sacrifice and you have been invaluable uh resource for me um is you know I took your your president seat and you have been um tremendously helpful and I so appreciate you for all that you've been willing to do you you made contact with with you when I was actually running for the seat um for the board seat right and uh your advice and and uh I'm going to put it on the record the first my first interaction with Mr Elvin was when he as a community member corrected me on on a on one of our Zoom meetings about how about Robert's Rules of Order and how I was running how I was running the meeting sent me a private chat and my response was do you want to run for so yeah yeah um certainly appreciate appreciate your all your your counsel and your willingness to to bring all of us up to speed at different times and and all the years you've been here have fed into that and so we will miss you tremendously so thank you for all that you poured into this district and its students so I appreciate you for that um trusty Smith once again uh I know this is this we won't be able to do this being recorded so I'll say it now um certainly appreciate you and and the council and the time that you have provided as as well to this district and as many students um you have all me contacted you also uh when uh I was running for the seat and you have been um tremendous asset for for this district for me personally uh so certainly appreciate you and we'll miss you as well um also in her absence want to say um we appreciate the time trusty Davis has provided uh to the school board understanding when you know when we needed somebody she was willing to step up and and we certainly appreciate that um so I know I don't know if she's going to be there on the 19th or not but I know she's not here today so I just wanted to make sure we publicly say thank you to her and her and for
