mayor Cannon is here with us today thank you mayor all right so without further Ado I would now like to introduce a lifelong resident of our town who for the past 12 years has spent them as the mayor of Oldbridge he successfully decided it was time to represent the needs of his constituents at the state level and this January he will be officially sworn in as the New Jersey senator for District [Applause] 12 as they say once a mayor always a mayor and this is my honor and kind of bit of sweet to be the last time I'm introducing you this way but it's the way I always love to introduce you as the man who needs no introduction our mayor Owen Henry senator-elect [Applause] oh [Applause] sorry ah thank you everyone thank you so much uh you know believe it or not when you're elected official you start preparing for your removal the day you get sworn in so believe it or not I really started thinking about this day 12 years ago and at that time I didn't know if going to be 12 days where because there was a big petition to recall the mayor at that time 12 years ago but uh it certainly is Bittersweet to be uh addressing the township the residents of Oldbridge as the former former mayor 121 last night ended my official term as 12 years as the mayor at the helm and I'm going to say a few words but I could possibly stand here for another 12 years and tell you about the experience that we've had had over the past 12 years but anyway that it is afternoon well good afternoon certainly everyone happy New Year we all hope and we all pray we're all consistent that uh May in 2024 may it be a year filled first of all primarily with good health Prosperity opportunity and happiness we should all find happiness in this world and our life that we're given as the invocation said Oldbridge is a great place to experience all those including happiness and despite as we all know life difficulties otherwise known as challenges that we might face because of the unknown nobody knows what tomorrow brings especially in the beginning of a new year as a result of being a New Year we're always apprehensive of we going to write 24 are we going to continue to write 23 I think we all agree that the years go by faster and faster as we get older as the numbers get bigger and I think again we all hope and we all pray for each other that each and every one of us are up to the task of the challenges and the difficulties that we're going to be facing in the days ahead and that we work together and resolving the difficulties and we all work together that we can all move forward each and every one of us we all deal with life on a personal level we all deal with life on a professional level and today as elected officials we get to deal with life challenges on a community level and and that's why we're here today to wear in a new leader a new leader at the helm as the mayor mayor Walker you have had a front row seat over the last 12 years and you have witnessed and have played a crucial role in the transformation of this town which began 12 years ago in a not so nice place this very room but I can tell you it was filled but there were issues that we had to face 12 years ago and we did that with the help of you thank you but that was then today is now and we can all agree I hope that we are are in a much better place than we were 12 years ago a much better community and with tomorrow Debbie comes the opportunity and the responsibility to build upon the accomplishments that we all made over the past 12 years you now you have that responsibility and I think everyone in this room should be proud of what we did accomplish over the last 12 years but we also know that the challenges and the difficulties will continue to present themselves as a mayor you're going to face some challenges some difficulties that might be just bumps in the road and we can smooth them out pretty easily Casey you might come across some hurdles that you're going to have to jump over you're going to face some challenges from Mother Nature where preparation patience and I think the Roper dope works for mother nature let her wreak havoc but as soon as she's done respond in the way with your team that lets her know that we're up to the task and unfortunately mankind will present some unique challenges which we faced and those are the challenges that are going to keep you on your toes those are the challenges that will keep you up at night with those challenges I think teamwork creative thinking luck and a lot of prayers work with those challenges the toughest challenge you're going to face ahead is the dreaded brick wall the issues which cause divisiveness the decisions that impact special interest groups when it goes against someone's agenda somebody's ego is hurt things that say can't be done which they have been said can't be done we've tried it in the past don't work it's not worth it all excuses never a reason and those brick walls Debbie are going to require a strong leader with a great team a leader whose name is on that first brick that needs to come out of that wall in order to weaken it and I'm confident Debbie because of your experience your knowledge and dedication to this town and this community and its residents that you are the right person you are going to be the leader of this town and this town is going to depend on you to keep improving upon what we started 12 years ago the team I leave you with includes some of the brightest most dedicated group of individuals that I've have ever ever had the opportunity to work with it's been a a gift from God the team that we've been able to assemble here in Oldbridge and they are responsible for most of the accomplishments of what we have achieved over the 12 years the township Workforce the supervisors the department heads the professionals are all here to help you and will be there when you need to circle the wagons I ask you please treat them with respect listen to them but make sure they hear you that you have their backs and you will be there for them I'm excited we should all be excited about the future and the good things Debbie and her Administration are going to achieve here and things that are going to happen here in Oldbridge over the next four years ladies and gentlemen it has been an honor a blessing to have served as the mayor your mayor for 12 years and I cannot thank you I'll be eternally indebted for you to you for the opportunity you bestowed upon me 12 years ago and then two additional terms now as I cleaned out my office last week I had had two large drawers in my office filled with cards newspapers pictures well-wishes some not so nice wishes you know when I started at the top and that was just this past month last year December and it took a few hours and I worked my way all the way down through the draw and I got down to January 2012 down at the bottom of the second draw and it certainly was a trip down memory lane unbelievable when I thought about it unbelievable and it was a trip to remember that's for sure I will never forget but most of all it was a trip I'm so thankful to God that I was able to take Debbie your trip starts today start fill in the draw I emptied them now you have two empty drawers you could start filling it because and I'm so blessed that my trip continues as a state senator oh if only my father were able to say his son the senator if anyone knew my father um my two running mates Alex and Robie here I look forward to joining them in [Applause] Trenton how exciting although I do get a week off I don't get sworn in it's first week off in 12 years and and with your support and the support of 12 other towns now that I will be responsible for giving me the opportunity to continue my commitment as a public servant but today I wanted to uh publicly just pledge my unwavering support and guidance if needed to our new mayor Debbie Walker and her [Applause] Administration and most of all I urge everyone to do the same it's lonely as a mayor it really is so I urge everyone to please support Debbie and give her the same trust and support that you have given me I want to wish all our elected officials the best of luck and urge you also to support the mayor and her Administration and my closing words that I've been waiting to say for quite a while now if you have a problem call the mayor thank you all so much thank you God bless you thank [Applause] [Music] [Applause] you [Applause] okay so at this time I would like to invite Kate Hutchinson the Township Clerk to come up to administer been practicing law for 35 years or 38 years in mpal law for a long time um you always learn something new so mayor I look forward to working with you and uh you know and the whole team and I know we'll continue to work and put our best foot uh best foot forward in the new year thank you again for all your support thank you um Township administrative report none at this time thank you wow okay Desai good luck to new administration led by mayor Debby Walker also good luck to past mayor owan Henry to the state senate I have one request and a question to the traffic department and a police department as we know there are lots of construction going around Suter Road on a WTOP Route 9 if you are coming from West Side on suas there is no leftt turn they made a special Jug Handle lapon coming going on Route 9 North but there is no sign saying the no lepon so let me tell you because I use that road I re of the Old Mill Road go out that way and go Route 9 South out of five car I will say three car make a left turn they don't go straight and come even a trailer so I think we should put big sign there no Lefton sign because otherwise you are going to face some accident there as more housing are building and people travel both way so that's my request to the traffic department please make a note because now there is no juger left at Route 9 and Old Mill also so people come Oldbridge Old Mill Road Grand Mary and then they make a LEP turn at the Sumas road so this will be a problem otherwise happy healthy and prosperous New Year of 2024 to all of councilmen council people
