providing opportunities for social emotional and academic Discovery to Foster curiosity courage and character our goal is to prepare our students to become lifelong Learners who are self-directed resilient productive responsible citizens thank you roll call on the rooll Mrs aasta Mr Del Greco may not be joining us Mrs Downey here Mrs noran here Mr nutland here Mrs Walker will be late Mr Walsh here Mr Darian here this Nichols here at this time we'll open to the public for agenda items only okay not seeing any we'll move forward I'm going to jump right to the superintendent report because we have a special presentation this evening good evening before I share the highlight of tonight's meeting which is our students teaching us about new two new curriculum resources I wanted to update the board on some other District news earlier this month all staff participated in a full day of Staff professional development which included um external vendors as well as our own staff facilitating sessions those external vendors included a represent from amplify which we're going to learn a little bit more about today and also a um facilitator from Westburg and mental health on addressing neurodiversity in the classroom um we have another professional development day set up in January and we've taken a lot of feedback from the staff on what other topics would continue to help them grow as professionals and best meet the needs of our students today I participated in the safe routes kickoff program with members of burrow Council and the ell Police Department Easy Ride will be joining with the burrow on a campaign over the next year they'll be providing bike and pedestrian safety programming for students in our community and the campaign will also specifically focus on the intersection of Grant a and idel AV with the goal of observing and developing changes that will enhance the safety for all Road users pedestrians and cyclists included when we talk about cyclists if you walked by Center Street you will notice that our two new bike racks have arrived we have noticed an increase in students bike to school that is something we want to continue to increase so we did place two more bike racks on school property parent teacher conferences began last week and we continue next week and please feel free to join us tomorrow at 2 o'cl on Memorial Field for our Halloween parade so now that all I know that's very exciting and now that that business part is taken care of I'm going to turn it over to Mrs Holly to share about the meat of our superintendent presentation good evening as Miss Boosie has shared we are going to do a spotlight on curriculum some new resources in action tonight we are going to talk about our Hagerty resource that we have we began using in kindergarten last year but we added also to first grade this year and first grade is going to teach you a little bit about that tonight tonight and math we're going to talk about our new resource that we're using in fourth and fifth grade which is amplify Desmos math so we're going to start off with heg and you do have a copy of the slides that have information on them the slides that I use as my anchor to keep myself in the presentation I did not include for you so hegerty is a program that teachers are using in Kinder Garten in first grade it helps students develop phonemic awareness which is how we hear words and how words relate to each other and that is a foundation of learning to read the lessons are 10 minutes each and it's multi-sensory in that there are hand motions that go along with the lessons to help students blend and sound out words the it focuses on eight phonological awareness skills which which include rhyming blending and isolating sounds and it is aligned with national and Statewide standards Miss Brado is going to lead our first grade ambassadors in parts of a hegr lesson today and Board of Ed members we're going to ask that you follow along and do the same thing that Mrs brancato does with our first graders it's not that hard I promise right do you think they can handle it okay do you remember how we stood earlier today okay you can go to the spots we practiced at you can be able to hold the mic and do the you have to have the mic do you want me to hold it for you sure that's funny we didn't practice this way did we okay so we're going to start with our rhyme recognition I just hold it myself it's just are you okay if I don't do something with emotions hold on I didn't think of this did Ivers okay got it can you hear me good okay gotcha okay so we're gonna start with our rhyme I'm gonna say two words and you'll say the words back to me and you'll show me a thumbs up if the words rhyme thumbs down if they don't ready sad madad I don't see your thumbs up boot Pig right one more run Fun Run fun awesome so lots of friends joining us from the board of bed there next we're going to talk think about saying a word you're going to repeat the word and then you're going to isolate the first sound are you ready ready bake good next is Hope cane excellent job all right now we're gonna blend some syllables get your Choppers ready okay so word of Ed members you got some Choppers we're going to chop into syllables the first is napkin napkin napkin good job sandwich sand sandwich good plastic good job okay so now we listened for the first sound in the word and now we're going to listen to the last sound in the word that we hear I'll say the word you repeat the word and then you're going to isolate that last sound okay we're gonna P punch it out remember okay first word is duck duck good job Rope Rope huge H excellent all right let's try another now we're going to segment into syllables so this time we're going to say the whole word and you're going to break it into syllables so we have to get those Choppers ready again everybody got those Choppers all right super super good job you you're G to blend it at the end too this one we're just going to break into syllables okay it is hard I know you said that it's hard you want to blend it at the end right recess recess good job Studio St St oh that was a hard one Pat yourself on the back for that one that was tricky this time we're going to add the final syllables so we can add a syllable to make a new word I'm going to say a part of a word you'll repeat that part and then I'm going to add a syllable to the end and you'll say the new word okay so if I say B add four before good b side good job be low awesome now we're going to delete the final syllables so we're going to take away that final syllable from the word that we just heard I'm going to say a word you repeat the word and then I will delete or take away a syllable from the end and you'll say what's left so we're going to do before before without four good job beside without side good below without low awesome one more let's do our counting the words in a sentence okay so I will say a sentence aloud you'll repeat the sentence then we'll say the sentence one more time together and we'll count the words ready today is Wednesday is Wednesday Today is Wednesday how many words awesome ready for the next one okay what do you play at recess do what do you play at recess how many awesome job I think you did a better job than what you think right so do you think they should come to first grade I think so they should and second grade too move up with you right so were you thinking about he we were talking about the other day do you have some some things some things that you want to share practic again all right come get in line for me you remember who wants to go first Justin thank you for being great you want to You're Gonna Hold the I'm gonna hold the M you're say your name and okay friends come on up here thank you all right is there something about that you love about hegerty and you're going to say your name my name is Justin and I like um changing the letters to diagraphs wow you even improved on what we practiced because you used the word diagraphs excellent job well done you're going to say your name and something you like about he my name is Alysa and I like the hand motions CU it keeps everything interesting my name is McKenna and in my class if my teacher decides who does the best you get the cape and the Cape is whoever gets the Cape is called the hey hero all right how many days well tell us your name and then tell when I give you the microphone tell us your name and how many days a week you do Hager day my name is five weeks five days yes thank you when we were practicing Iden kept telling me there was nothing he he liked about Hagerty so we decided not to share that with you so thank you first grade you can kiss your brains you did a great job you don't want to kiss your brains okay you can give yourselves a pat on the back again good job all right fourth graders are you ready okay so we're going to talk we're going to switch from Ela to math and we're going to talk a little bit about amplifi Desmos math so as you know this year we started using amplifi Desmos math in fourth and fifth grade but it is a math program that spans grades K to Algebra 2 and it's a problem-based learning approach to math it is the main supplemental resource for our curriculum in grades four and five and next year it will be the main supplemental program that we use for all of our math classes it's designed to help students really build a lasting understanding of math by igniting their curiosity and working in their prior knowledge so there's work in amplify that spirals so all of the homework that students are getting is Spiral Review so that way they remember that the math that they learned before doesn't stop it needs to we need to continue working with it as we move throughout our mathematical learning it's student centered which means that it helps students work together they get to do a lot of accountable math talk and they get to use a lot of um explain a lot of their problem solving in because we understand and know that the person who's talking is the person who's learning so if the teacher talks all of the time the students are always processing the learning the lessons combine paper and digital one of the things that we were really impressed about amplify was that they were very strategic going from K through five about how much time students should be using paper and pencil math which is very important to math learning and how much time screen time they should be getting so it's very strategic in each grade how many screen lessons there are and how many paper pencil lessons there are students can work um interactively on their devices and teachers can monitor the students as they're working in real time so as they're doing something on their computer the teacher can check in and see how they're doing it uses data to help us personalize learning and empowers student students by promoting that math talk that I mentioned earlier and it uses a lot of centers and gamework it's really a gamified learning and the kids are going to talk to you a little bit about that when they tell you about what they like about amplify Desmos math what we're going to do now is play one of the paper based Center games so you're going to get a fourth grader to help you and you're going to learn one of the games so Mr Werner and Miss Cummings can help you get set up all right you can follow friends orc remember how to play all right don't beat me too B hey clay clay so you're going to get ready to play cover up Clay can you tell us a little bit about what cover up does what you do you in order to play cover up you need um two two of these blocks and um a couple of these counters and what math does it work on it works on uh multiplication excellent okay good I think we I think we're just about ready for you okay so now I'm GNA write two time 4 I write 1 * 10 and equals and I'm G to take this one and move it to five so then I have to do two * five more counters so let's try it that's right come on you have the right I I don't want cheap and we can still get 10 I so I or do I have to change the color yeah I'm yellow okay so you're GNA write i'mna write so we're competing take that I'll get two * = 10 myuct is 10 question there's um there's three players and there's two oh okay so we're kind of you're helping me and then you can help him too okay so I have to write go ahead's next okay so I have to write that's your move you're allowed to move I'm GNA go again yeah you're now you can either I go I'm gonna for Giggles so three * 10 so it should be the same right you explain to them how they want to get uh up or down across you can start blocking each other gets a little more complicated there's my all right one two two times three 10 that one or the 25 to block you can stack on top too your double stacks oh so these SCH stack on top for a double stack oh okay so we could do oh so if they were next to each other then I can put them yeah you could put 10 time 10 and capture that 100 okay now can this 10 go all the way over here cuz I'm all the way out here yeah you can just like you can't then move right so giant 4 years yeah can I go on top of this one no's I already did three I can't see the board I could see it says two and the five are open one at a time now I got find hard one time five and so do you want to keep or do you want I want to keep the what's that 20 but this is a difficult one to get yeah I'm not letting you get the one one yeah obviously you're not you're not nice no I'm very nice no you're not you're not playing nice all right so four * four take turn five so what can I do no one no one if I had my next turn I got it that's right I was set up yeah did you have fun times more I love paper we need do more she's a good right and this is one of the games that when we actually bring this down to like let's just say kind G or first grade they'll be able to do this as with addition and subtraction so this is one of the games that the students will become very familiar with and with all the basic operations so it's one very familiar routine to them nice you did a great job sweetheart well done you exp yeah thank you my name is cther it's a great name bo well done Catherine and Catherine we did a good job I do four times to we took we took them out thank you okay fourth graders you can clean up and then come line up keep it or you know as M or how did your adults do and M and Miss um Watson so that was kind of a hard game well it was two adult brains against your fourth grade brain did you handle it though I figured you could okay so that is just a little taste of one of the many games that students are learning to really work on their math skills and their math comprehension and they're going to share a little bit um about what they learn what they've loved and learned uh with amplify this year and I promise and even the first graders we did not tell them what to say we asked them what they thought and they came up with the ideas and the vocabulary themselves remember you're going to introduce yourself my name is Cyrus and one thing I like about amplify is that there's a lot of partner work and you can share your thinking and learn with other people hi my name is Brady and I like the computer based lessons because in Go Math it was all paper and it's fun but the digital lessons like the interactive part is fun and an example of one of the games is hamster homes where you have to make like a hamster tube by saying two BLS and how many you need so like for nine I need three three inch tubes and that was a lot of fun but the paper based games are also a lot of fun too so there's a lot of games and they're all a lot of fun my name is Catherine and what I like about amplify is now amplify is make it's like makes homework easier because when when you like do the homework expire you it it takes it takes third grade homework instead of doing the lessons you just did in class for homework takes third grade lessons and and reviews it for you and then it and then if there's fourth grade stuff on it kind of makes it easier because you learn the your your the third grade stuff on the paper is helping you learn the fourth grade stuff so I like about that so so what I like about oh my name is Eden and what I like about amplify is that in go maath you used to do everything independently but now in amplify there's a time where you get to share with other people and that's what I like about amplify done what what my name is clay and what I like about amplify is a way that is equally balanced between paper and computer work and there are a lot of games um I'm Mr Warner and what I like about amplify is I've been going into a lot of the classrooms lately and you know math now is fun for the kids and we're in there and they're talking to one another they're problem solving together they're learning from each other they're learning multiple strategies to solve problems it really expands their thinking and it gets the math classroom looking like almost a reading and writing classroom so the kids are really IC and they're engaged and they're collaborative and they're really bouncing ideas off each other so it's been a really great past two months of the program so I promised the kids that I would give them credit for their work so their names are up on the slide um but you also Board of Ed do you have any questions for any of us Mr Walsh how come we don't turn on your microphone how come we don't have Amplified math in third grade that's a good question so this amplifi math has been um published for the upper grades um a couple of years ago so the middle school and high school programs were already published when we started researching they were in a pilot last year really working on the fourth and fifth grade and they are writing the K through three program now and it will be ready for us for next year so even in the summer they were sending us um our games and our kits as they were writing them and one of the great things about that is that as we see um something needs to be improved they're working on improving it right away so they've been really responsive to us and with our you know looking at our feedback and really working with us on things that need to be improved so we're um one of a handful of New Jersey schools that are using amplify right now in the fourth and fifth grade River Edge is another one of the districts thank you I I just have a comment ladies and gentlemen you did a great job presenting and you did a wonderful job teaching us on how to do it um you know true Mastery of of understanding is when you can explain it to other people so you did a phenomenal job Katherine great job that was our our teacher so um great job everyone we clap for the first group I think everybody desires a round of applause for coming you're very brave for coming to our meeting and speaking in front of everyone so we do thank you for coming all right thank you very much that concludes my report so uh Miss Holly mentioned to me that I forgot to open the meeting with hitting my gavel which was everyone was waiting for so I'm just going to tell you all you are dismissed so you don't have to stay for the rest of our boring meeting so you are dismissed you can stay but we'll take a two-minute recess so you can leave or switch seats great J Budd it's my neighbor e okay moving forward Mr aapeli yes we had a uh meeting with uh Mr Pereira from Lan he is our construction manager for the roof so he came to start looking at where the roofing project is and the items that need to be resolved all now all the small details that need to be cleaned up um and put together that punch list so uh that that project is coming to an end and we had final inspections on the exhaust fans uh everything with that has been resolved now there's just a small punch list that will be completed um so those projects should be finished in a short period of time that concludes my report thank you moving on to minutes we have a review of October 9th any questions please email Mr aell we have approval of September 18th do I have a motion that we approve minutes of September 18th and I'll second it second by Mrs noran any questions call the question on the role Mrs aasta Mrs Downey yes Mrs noran yes Mr nutland yes Mr Walsh yes Mr Darian yes Mrs Nichols yes committee reports buildings and grounds Mr Darian uh yes we've had a we had a a buildings and grounds meeting on the 16th uh we reviewed seems like we're reviewing and reviewing and reviewing the same uh projects but it's nice that some of them are completing um uh basically what we have left uh the big ticket items are mostly completed uh like Mr stelli had mentioned they're just small punch lists but you know primarily they're complete um we do have some some other projects that we're discussing but the the issues with those is that they're not being funded out of our cap Reserve or maintenance reserve and it's coming out of our general fund and there's a lot of sensitivities around that and so you know we kick it around in terms of priority and we kick it around and we kick around in terms of scope and we argue and should we do this should we not do it and then we kick it to finance and uh that subcommittee reviews it so um you know we have just a ton of little projects that um are on our agenda for uh during the winter but uh other than that there's nothing major to speak of and with that I'd like to introduce uh items B2 on the agenda I'm sorry B1 and B2 I'll second any questions call a question on the rooll Mrs aasta Mrs Downey yes Mrs noran yes Mr nutland yes Mr Walsh yes Mr Darian yes Mrs Nickles yes Mrs noran curriculum um I have no report um but thank you very much for that wonderful presentation um about some of the curriculum that we're putting to use in the school um with that I'd like to present C1 I'll second it second by Mr Walsh any questions call the question on the role Mrs aasta Mrs Downey yes Mrs noran yes Mr nutlin yes Mr Walsh yes Mr Darien yes Mrs Nichols yes Mrs aosta finance discusss and building in grounds I would like to um I would like to put forth D1 through d8 I'll second it second by Mr Walsh any questions Mr Daran yeah da uh ma group I know You' told us several times but um the Mac group on d8 what is that again this is application number five that was approved on the 25th by Mr Pereira from Lan uh this is bringing total completion to just under 80% because we had that additional change order the additional roof uh there's still a Balan theage including retainage of $129,500 Mrs Downey yes Mrs noran yes Mr nutland yes Mr Walsh yes Mr Darien yes Mrs Nichols yes delegate report Mr Walsh um I have no report uh but we did check and there was no meeting in October that I missed the next one is December right okay is it virtual or are you going down as far as I know it's me going down okay so I guess we should put expenses on the next one is our next meeting before the December meeting um Personnel Mrs noran you want to take that um I'd like to um make a motion to accept the recommendations of the superintendent on the Personnel committee report F1 I'll second second by Mr Walsh any questions call the question on the role Mrs aasta Mrs Downey yes Mrs noran yes Mr nutland yes Mr Walsh yes Mr Darien yes Mrs Nichols yes policy Mr delgo is not here do we I guess we need to set a meeting at some point is there any policy issues right now public relations Mrs Downey I don't have anything to report open to the public okay older new business Mr nutland hi um I just want to um I was uh fortunate I know some people might said not say that but I was fortunate to uh spend two nights with our fifth graders at uh sharp reservation um we definitely had probably the best weather you can possibly have um and um I I believe that it was a wonderful trip I believe that the teachers did a fabulous job the kids were pretty tuckered out after each day which is a good thing um but uh outdoor education I think is a wonderful thing I think um if you have doubts on whether or not you should take your kid fishing or take your kid biking or take your kid hiking there should be no doubts I think that we could all benefit from being outdoors more and our kids absolutely had a blast um so I would like to acknowledge um you know the teachers the administration who were there who did a phenomenal job organizing it it was safe it was well run it was thought out um and uh you know to the chaperon who also came up and drove uh you know you did a great job too um and uh I enjoyed myself and you know I I hope we continue to do outdoor projects like this any other older new business business um just that um we tried to set up a curriculum meeting and we need to do that going forward so I just want to put that out there I guess we'll do it since Mrs Walker is in here we'll do it through uh text or email I guess okay mrri Pell thank you for having the auditorium painted finished covered the spot it looks better and I actually do have a uh do have a piece of new business do you know Mr iell since we've been going back and forth back and forth on the HVAC units a million times have we looked into an esip at all for them they're 18 years old so they're they're older than our have we looked into maybe an EIP because there's money out there right now I haven't but if you want me to I will I mean we can bring it to b& but I was thinking it might be something worth it because they they come do the audit right they come do an energy a it and technically the savings are supposed to you know carry us through the project what do you think Mr Daren with that yeah there there was some Federal Regulation I can't remember you know that we recently passed and each state was rolling out um uh their version you know of the federal program and I don't know where New Jersey is but I know that you know HVAC and and Equipment upgrades was a big part of of that uh Energy Efficiency program so whether it was an EIP like what we did last time EIP is in New Jersey right now is it EIP from what I looked I was looking I'm pretty sure it's going now but I don't know how long it's going for so I look it they'll do it yeah sooner rather than later I think we should talk about it because it may be better than going the rod gr route possibly yeah so I think we should really look at it yeah I think we should we don't really need to discuss if Mr Rell is willing to look into it no I you can look into and then you know come back to us even if it's a possibility maybe it's not I will um any other old or new business old business go ahead old or new now I have new on on in front of you on your desk is uh is the bag that was handed out at Workshop inside is the classes that were offered to all the board members that went down there and uh I think I put a I put something else that you can hang yourself if you a lanyard yeah I don't know if it's strong enough next meeting I'll use that how was Workshop you both W how was it I I actually I thought it was I thought it was great there were um well we got to see our um the director of um the New Jersey school boards put on a drum set and opened up the um the uh Workshop he marched in uh we got to listen to um John konz he was an awesome awesome speaker um and also listened to Maria from Sesame Street there were but there were a number of other things that were were there as well um I don't know what you went to because we didn't end up catching up with each other but um um are you finished no I I I'll think of some other things plus I have a little swag I'll bring some of it tap me on the shoulder okay uh if you look at the book the classes started later um I haven't been going there for 30 years though but uh the class is used to start used to line up you had to get there in the in the convention center by 9:00 get online and then pick a class that you wanted to attend and then if there was still room for that class after you waited on that line you got to to go to the class and you had to do that for every class right you had to pick up tickets for everything went into um I think it's a little we've come a long way since then but and classes started at 10 10:30 they started later and they ended earlier to 3:30 4:00 uh they used to uh run later than that uh I don't think there was a there wasn't a lot of subjects I will say that to choose from if the when you looked at the book and you looked at the time uh you might have five or six classes to try to choose one uh plus they had training they had training that was available for people Governor governance one two three and four that were available in governance four which is for uh people who have been reelected to uh Board of Education have to take that in their first year that they reelected um that was offered I think on every day that was that was down there so that it made it more convenient for you it used to be off it on the last Thursday always on the last day last class yeah and uh no I had a good time it was uh I I enjoyed the classes that I picked I wish and I complained at the classes that was no handouts there used to be handouts and I used to run around the convention center getting all the handouts from all the classes that I missed and then bring it back to the district run it off and give it out to all the board members but I did I didn't have a chance this year because there were no handouts but I'm in the process of getting the handouts they were all on computer so once I get the link if you're interested I'll hand it out and uh you can look it up you have the workshop book so you can look up the the description of the the course and uh and go from there I enjoyed it there were a number of classes that were on AI that um looked at it from different points of view so was it's kind of interesting to go to the different a couple of the different classes on AI because you could see their approach to it um I'm still mulling it over in my head I took a couple of those yeah and uh yeah we shall see yeah so it was good Mr Dar I think it was worth yeah it was worth it did they have an index of the vendors in the Expos Exposition Hall so that we can look them up that's the thing that was missing yeah there's one on the digital app if you would like me to so you maybe look up what you looking for the specific thing that you're looking for and get all the vendors that I don't like the vendors either because they got there they weren't there the first day Monday they set up late and they left they left at the end of Wednesday yeah they left at the end of Wednesday but they leave early yeah um so when I get a chance to comment on my uh experience and I have been doing this for maybe the last 10 years or more uh I say the vendor should stay there longer because of go to class till 4:00 they're leaving at 4:15 they're they're 5:00 they're out of there yeah because they have parties to go to too so that's the whole thing the parties uh I think the difficulty with the session is it it's easier if there are a number of people who go down so you can split up the different classes that you can go to and then other people can hit the vendors on the vendor floor um it some things conflict with each other while you're down there so uh we just do the best that we can but I will tell you one thing the first I never went in the beginning because I was working and uh I wouldn't take off to go but so let's say for the first 10 years I didn't go but um when I did go you used to have a bingo card and Catherine used to run around the vendors and get all the Bingo cards filled out and the first year I won a $2500 uh machine did a machine and donated it to the school but right because we can't keep any of the things that we get so we we anything that we win we donate it to the the school but it was good so and I have to say that I've been going down there for probably 31 years um and there is still a lot to learn it's not over so I'm looking forward to next year when I can go down there and good tell Mr iell the hotel you want now so you get it any other older new business I won't make any dates for October so I C keep it open any other old or new business I don't date anymore any need for a close session from anyone no so I move to adjourn I'll check all in favor I I judge just hit a home run well he keeps yeah it's about time something
