the ilon magazine this week our annual elections are being held during blocks 2 and five starting on Tuesday and ending on Friday issues being debated are age limits on presidential candidates addicts on organ donor organ donor list should section 230 of the communications decency act be retracted a mandated fourthe history course equal parental adoption rights and banning sex reassignment surgery for youth under 18 students have a CH choice to vote on Monday for candidates from either the snowport party or the Safari party AP exams are being administered May 6th through the 17th the World Language Honor Society induction and Senior Court ceremony is on May 21st at 7 the NS induction ceremony is on Monday May 2nd at 700 p.m. on May 1st there is a military career fair on the patio from 10:30 to 11:00 for any students interested in joining the Armed Forces after graduation next Friday we have our annual cross toown volleyball competition Spike night join a team or come and watch while raising money for the njasc charity hugs for Brady the school that can shakes with the most amount of money will have their school flag FL flown for an entire week at the other school on Friday May 10th there is an nahs art auction after school where artists will have boots set up to sell their work the spring concert is on May 21st at 700 p.m. and for par high on April 8th uh they have the April 18th the World Language honor societies held their inductions for new members and handed out chords to senior members and those who have passed their bilingual biliteracy exams on the 19th we had our spring pep rally celebrating spring sports teams playing games and pieing teachers as a part of the class of 2025 fundraiser The Italian Club had a bot ball tournament on Tuesday April 23rd after school with a prize for the winner after 5 years Our Miss slm show has returned on Friday April 26th at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium to see six individuals compete for the title of Mr or a Miss PHS with amazing entrances acts and answers to a Q&A session with a special MC the tickets are $5 our School logo design contest went through the first round of judging and the final six designs were voted on by students on Tuesday uh prita mati received the national Center for Women and information technology aspirations in Computing award based on her aptitude and aspirations in technology the class of 2026 is donating gently worn used and new shoes to raise funds the lacrosse team is having their green out for mental health awareness game on Saturday at against Dayton at 10:00 a.m. on support and we truly appreciate the efforts made in promoting inclusivity and diversity within our school district thank you lamia April 2024 that's very nice very nice thank you Robinson is there any unfinished business that come before the board no uh there's been a topic that's come up a few times over the last several meetings regarding the Board of Education uh meeting with the township to discuss um pilot programs I am happy to announce that that meeting did occur between three board members the mayor and two councilmen uh yesterday the meeting was cordial uh it lasted about 90 minutes uh and we agreed uh to meet again to discuss items of mutual interest and benefit to the residents of par syy go on to committee reports Mrs kogan buildings and grounds sure buildings and grounds met on April 23rd attendance um was myself via phone Mr beros Miss mayor M Tesco Dr Suter we um discussed the rod grant for the phhs HVAC replacement the projects is being partially funded by a rod Grant and there's a motion on this bulletin to approve a transfer from capital reserve to fund the district portion of the cost of that project the jrw chiller was appr a project was approved by the state the district is currently developing a timeline for to bid the project the Littleton addition is moving along the masonry as well as electrical work is ongoing the district is still waiting for the contractor to provide a letter regarding the delay change orders and the project is currently at a 111 day delay the school capacity report that we asked for is nearing completion and is expected to be done by the end of this month and for General project updates the Troy Hills window replacement punch list has been sent to the vendor for completion by May 1st the gym and Intervale window replacement the PSA will be completing an updated punch list for each of these projects by the end of the week the C partial roof replacement is almost complete we're just waiting for the copper copper coping to to be installed Mount chair Mount Taber chairlift and PHS pays lab Renovations the district's waiting for the legal review of the bid specs once it's completed the district will go out for bid on that project or both of those projects the door placement bid is out um on that project and the opening is May 7th and the district hopes to reward the bid at the may9th board meeting and that was all we discussed any questions see done thank you Allison uh Mr Rea uh I'm met with the p on April 15th uh as the the Le I'm sorry Jack can you use the microphone oh thank you sorry I met with the p at uh on April 15th as a Lea on um the the meeting started with the appointment of the new executive director his name is Tom Bush nascus and so he started he's been off to a quick start with a lot of different items going on uh within the pal itself uh the mayor attended and gave a self-described state of the Town address talked for about 45 minutes on a variety of topics and uh they were among the topics discussed at the board meeting with a variety of of repairs and maintenance going on Within the building and there are a number of different improvements and there will be some fundraising to do additional improvements over the next year thank you thank you questions any questions for Mr Rea seeing none uh Mrs Chappelle Human Resources you're the man thank you uh the HR Labor Relations Committee met on Tuesday uh April 23rd presid were myself Mrs golderer Mrs mayor Mr Ricker and and Dr Sutter again a full agenda uh for our Personnel so thanks again to Mr Ricker for his continued focus and commitment to delivering for them which in turn delivers for our students uh we discussed a number of things including um a number of confidential matters which are all getting the appropriate level of attention and to address them we are looking to formalize a security director role who will oversee all aspects of the districtwide security including and not limited to procedures drills personnel as well as is serving as a liaison to the SRO and police department when necessary um in your materials for tonight were're a number of member renewals for the 2024 2025 school year which we reviewed during that meeting and then lastly uh the job postings for 2024 2025 were again posted uh proactively um and has led to a number of strong candidates which are currently being reviewed um again our early action has allowed us to fill these openings ahead of schedule positioning us well for the next school year any questions thank you any questions being none uh Dr going to be handled through video on the go uh we put forward potential uh future episodes on things like Pilots hibs curriculum development um how to get the schools ready for the first day transport Food Services buildings and grounds potentially concussions anything that the uh public may be interested in that we may have a special perspective on um and we the communications committee invites other committees to propose potential topics that are related to those committees areas of prview we also discussed Community engagement opportunities uh some meetings ago we had NG sba's field representative Charlene Peterson come in and give a professional development uh presentation on board community outreach and we were following up on that and kind of figuring out what might that look like for our board in the near future um some of the goals discussed were the opportunity to communicate with constituencies in the town that we aren't necessarily reaching effectively um and how we might uh facilitate that one idea that we're forwarding is uh you individual members as representatives in these different spaces and figuring out how to reach out go into spaces and meet people where they are rather than ask people to come to us and uh the the committee uh asked I volunteered to uh communicate with Charlene Peterson about whether there were any particular guidelines or uh best practices as individual members communicate with the public as board members um and I have emailed her and I'm waiting to hear back and that is the communications uh report and I also just wanted to uh report out I attended uh mostly As a parent um a a presentation given by the elementary school counselors called parenting the tech World um and I just wanted to commend the school counselors for collaborating on a really informative presentation uh it's so important you know as we particularly in the elementary level we're thinking about like when are our children confronting technology when are they you know entering the internet figuring out what they're doing with their computers what they shouldn't be doing and it was a really interesting and thoughtful uh presentation and discussion and I really appreciated the counselor's leadership and collaboration on that that's it thank you any questions well thank you Dr R um I'll I'll address the podcast a little bit uh in a moment yes I attended the eagle scout um ceremony U Mr baros was also there it was a really nice event um the two gentlemen that were you know honored that night or that day their their accomplishments were amazing they are amazing young men and it was just a wonderful thing to hear and see and they with their families it was really a lovely ceremony and I was wondering if the Girl Scouts have anything similar to that they must have something here's the Gold Award yeah but we never hear about that that's unfortunate maybe we should reach out to see when they do that because if we go to the Eagle Scouts we really should go to the Girl Scouts Jennifer jennif that's that's my report they used to have it at the at Chris St Christopher I can provide the contact okay thank you we have to before we phone Dr uh Sutter Mr varios and Mr Rea and um what we discussed was we the the review of the governance document we also discussed the uh board self- evaluation from last year and um we discussed having presentations at board meetings um we we didn't come up with a we haven't come up with any hards set rules with uh either any one of the subject matters because the the committee Comm members are new and they were reviewing the documents and um at our next meeting we will be uh we we will be addressing them thank you any questions sir Susie yes I was just asking if there were any questions have a couple of topics um super intendent and I discussed a few things um the inclement weather give back days will be the Friday before and the Tuesday after the Memorial Day holiday weekend um we're continuing with our residential development uh project uh initiatives whether it be on the revenue side space uh Communications Etc as Dr right uh mentioned one of the ways that we wanted to enhance community outreach was with a um a podcast or I guess more more apply put a um a YouTube video and we had our in inaugural um recording of that session on Tuesday and i' like to thank Dr Suter and Mrs tadesco for um for participating in that this is the superintendance podcast I I'm sorry just listening oh okay thank so um our first topic was uh School budgets and Robin did a fantastic job uh elaborating on how a budget's built and all of the intricacies that go into that and the complexities and you Dr stter did a great job as well so that will be U posted on our YouTube channel tomorrow it's about 15 minutes long maybe a little bit longer than uh upcoming podcast want to keep a little bit on the shorter shorter side but I was you know thrilled to participate and um I think uh as Dr Wright said we have some topics already uh in the can we'd like to have more suggestions from board members about things they'd like to see we'll have additional board members participate special guests Etc so uh please send to sheal actually as the head of communications um any suggestions you had for uh podcasts and I'm sorry Brian thank you too for for your help you're very patient plaque I believe correct all right so and Michelle is also receiving her new board M certification yes so so we it's going to be it's going to be a fun night for you guys as well as our students who received honorable mentions three silver Awards and one Gold Award as a Gold Award winner BMS Middle Middle School student Nisha Kumari has automatically Advanced to the National level of judging in New York City thank you Mr nandez for being such a talented and devoted teacher and to her Brook law students for their remarkable achievement I'm very excited and proud to announce that Dr Jess broen's proposal to present at the 2024 National Council of teachers of English annual convention was accepted Dr bronen's session is entitled encouraging explorations of identity through creative writing this is a wonderful opportunity for Dr bronen to lend her's expertise to other teachers from around the nation congratulations Dr Brazen and thank you for your consistent hard work and dedication to our students and the department finally more exciting news from the phhs fine arts department please join me in congratulating seista penaga and Sydney beer their artwork was selected to be displayed at the Caster theater at Monclair State University for the Congressional Art competition what a tremendous honor and accomplishment a huge thank you to their dedicated teacher Miss Rachel Kelly for providing this opportunity for her students and encouraging them to participate tonight for your approval we have superintendent bulletin items 1 through 50 however we will be pulling item tonight's secretary's report we have our regular business motions including the approval of the 2425 budget this is the public hearing of the budget if there are any questions please um please ask does anybody have any questions thank you okay thank you uh is there any uh new business I actually have some there was a uh two letters that were sent to patch and to um Pary Focus uh by a forign board member actually former board president and there's a lot to unpack in in that letter uh and I'm not going to address most of it here today um I don't feel it's my role as a board president to do that but I will say that there was a um factual error in um his position on the budget and I'm going to quote uh from that letter uh quote yet the operating budget is $50 million more than when I left the Boe as president in 2021 that is a significant increase and is worth looking into it seems out of control and I suggest the Boe seek more opportunities where savings can occur unquote so that's factually not accurate uh the person in question left the board during the 2021 2022 school year the budget at the time was $170 million uh the budget today stands at $182 million the last three years have been highly inflationary yet the board of education has managed the school budget in an economically sensible way so that the average annual tax levy increase has just been over 2% and I want to uh let the residents know that they can be assured that the independently AIT school district budget is fiscally responsible providing for academic imperatives that benefit the children of parsipany
