anti-bullying coordinator is to present the self assessment for determining grades under the anti-bullying Bill of Rights act as required by the New Jersey Department of Education these scores were presented to and approved by the board of education at the October 17th 2023 meeting the NJ dooe recently approved and released the official scores which have been posted on the district we web page for public review since the end of May this report is based on last year last school year 2022 2023 it is a rubric that is completed by the school anti-bullying specialists in conjunction with the school safety teams and reviewed or appr and approved by the building principles the rubric is used to help assess how well each school is meeting the responsibilities and requirements of the anti-bullying Bill of Rights the schools use the results to focus their efforts and resources to address bullying concerns and to continue to Foster Foster positive School climates in their buildings each board member received the self assessment grades for each of our schools for the October meeting and more most recently for this meeting the grades are out of 78 total points the rubric is very specific with eight core elements with ratings from 1 to three for each indicator with a one representing partially meets requirements a two representing meets all requirements and a three representing exceeds the requirements this is not a passing or a failing score rather it is a self-reflection to determine where there is room for improvement in our programs at each of our schools at this time I will re will review each school's individual scores which are also projected on the screen projected on the screen currently is the school uh report for Aldine School for the 20122 2023 Gordon school and preliminary determination was also used zero time times last year for Rosell Park High School the score was 71 out of 78 points on the rubric the core elements are also outlined and preliminary determination was used zero times for Rosel Park Middle School the number of times I apologize 66 out of 78 points was a self assessment grade the core elements are also outlined and preliminary determin was used zero times and finally for Sherman School the grade was 71 out of 78 again the core elements are outlined and the number of times preliminary determination was used was Zero last year with all of these individual school scores combined the NJ doe has assigned an overall District score of 70 out of 78 points which is at the top in the small little box at the top of will be participating in the njcie program next school year along with the middle school which currently benefits from the njcie grant which is the inclusion Grant which is very exciting thank you and no okay seeing none I'll open up public participation each member of the public may speak a maximum of three minutes state your name for the record hello my name is Zan fonte and I'm a I live here in Rollo Park good evening superintendent go my former board colleague and the community of Roso Park I begin this evening by taking a minute to congratulate our graduates from kindergarten to Senior High what you all have done Despite All Odds is nothing short of inspiring thank you to our administrators students and staff for championing every one of our students accomplishments and for creating safe learning spaces for all our students during pride month and throughout the year safe spaces are essential for young lgbtq plus students students like me who while attending rolls ofar High School found community and chosen family through clubs student council and our incredible Arts Athletics and extracurricular activities it wasn't easy believe me but thanks to programs like the crisis center and advocates for lgbtq plus youth like some that sit here in the audience today I felt safe seen and celebrated for the Youth watching remember remember that the crisis center is always there for you and speaking from experience I can say it's saved my soul from carrying shame and grief countless times over the years all of our students have had lgbtq Plus residen of Rosal Park to look up to Rosal Park elected a father and our first openly gay Board of Education member Scott Nelson in 2010 we've had people like current Board of Education member appointed in 2022 and reelected in 2023 Michael an Reagan a special education teacher mother an out lesbian who has advocated for fairness and a focus on the academic and social emotional issues facing our students they've had former mayor and councilman at large Joseph diorio and thos Shipley a former fifth W councilman husbands serve side by side as advocates for Unity and joy in our community one of rosar Park High School's notable alumni author Michael oelo created an autobiographical novel titled spoiler alert chronicling the love challenges and loss that gay men still face today the film adapted starring uh the film adaptation starred Sally Field Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons and was nominated for a 2022 glad media Award for best film the contributions of the lgbtq plus community in and from RAR Park are undeniable regardless of who we love we've all faced struggles but one thing is true at our core we are a community that thrives because of people of all identities choosing a square mile town to start a family raise children and see them grow into the amazing graduates we celebrate today so I ask the board to focus its energy Less on culture wars and Affairs beyond your scope of expertise I ask you to focus on improving the safety of all our students so they may have a better chance at a quality education thank you thank you Katie mcdermit Rosel Park I'll hold it together for this one um the reason I cried when talking about Mrs kler is because she's so very very special and her contribution to the education of the students she serves is immeasurable all right so one I'm about to say may sound familiar um I'm actually repeating my public participation from last June because it all still pertains uh Friday's last day of school there's a palpable buzz in the air summer break is built into our society our culture it's in songs it's in movies entire TV shows like Phineas and Ferb are based on summer vacation it's a write of Passage it's pure joy try and remember and take a moment how you felt on that last day now try and imagine all that excitement is swirling around you uh there are people talking about trips to the beach time off with family but you know that come next week you're going to be right back at school that is what children attending extended school year face every single June you've probably not thought about it but the effect on them and their families is profound we have discussed a myriad of reasons of why rosol's Park should move extended school year to the end of the summer better academic results better recruitment better Mitigation Of regression and easier transition back into the regular school year extended school year is not meant to be punitive but that is how it ends up feeling to these kids instead of feeling that joy and freedom they want uh they once again feel like Outsiders we need to examine and rectify every little pernicious thing that makes children in our special education system feel other than the rest we've been told a ton of reasons why esy can't be moved to the end of the summer sum but maintenance schedules can be changed funds can be encumbered I'm uh reminded of something Dr Jennifer Spencer EMS taught me at the NJ njcie inclusion conference in 2022 real meaningful change requires a change in mindset we have to have Buy in from all involved I'm asking you to buy in to moving esy to August if we put our heads together we can overcome any obstacle standing in our way last thing while we celebrate juneth tomorrow I also wanted to mention that Saturday March the 25th anniversary of the Olstead decision this ruling affirmed the value of the lies and contributions of people with disabilities it recognize the importance of participation in the community for everyone and Herald to see change in the way our community approaches providing supports to people with disabilities I hope you take a moment to celebrate that day as well thank you thank you sorry Hello Lucy Cito Rosel Park so I just wanted to everybody know my daughter is graduating this year so it was very emotional we went through Sherman Sherman is my school of course I love Sherman um it was an emotional time anybody that knows me knows I don't cry I almost had a tear we went through Sherman um we did the whole Sherman thing it was amazing then my daughter posted how she wants to stay small and she doesn't want to grow up which I want her out cuz she's at that point now um and I have to say she went through Sherman she went to middle school and then she went through high school and I have to say out of all the schools I've never in my life have felt so loved my daughter has felt everybody I my daughter has never looked at color or sex or anything I've taught my children look at their heart not their color not their sexual you cut everybody we believe the same so when people come up here and say it's time to look at everyone it's true but not at their sexuality we don't judge people by their sexuality or their color we we actually look at people's hearts that's how I T taught my children my children know what's right from wrong and it isn't has nothing to do with you know starting fights because you're gay or you're straight no it has to do with how you are as a person and there's lovely people I have to say in every single school that my daughter went to and I have to say Miss Costa has been the best principal I've ever had I love her to death and that's why I'm staying next year thank you thank you Lucy anyone else closing the public participation I'm sorry yes superintendent go would like to say a couple of words couple yes president bamon I wanted to um before we leave just uh thank my administrative team my principals here today and my vice principal and athletic director um a lot of the staff as well but I try to thank the staff as much as I can but I don't thank you enough um I couldn't have done it without you I am very proud of every single one of you and I'm going to really try not to cry but Dr Scully would you please come up so that we could recognize you and your new chapter of your life and we wish you the best and this is your last board meeting with us but you thought you going to get away but no so thank you good and now if I could have the administrators come up I think it would be nice so we could have a last picture with Dr Scully thank you e I left here who have I believe this year turned to school district around um I feel we're headed in a very very very positive direction um she's they're assembling an awesome team of Administrators and teachers and staff um I'm not saying every day has been easy um we've had some ups and downs but we've learned from our Downs and and we've made improvements so I want to congratulate the superintendent and the ba on an excellent and successful year and in and in closing I want to congratulate the class of 2024 whether they're kindergarten first grade second grade high school middle school graduation today congratulations to allo I'm sorry and preschool and preschool thank you and preschool thank you anyone else closing remarks none okay the next scheduled regular board meeting
