donations that the various groups around town have contributed to us and I I know we've said this a lot but I kind of want to raise one idea is that I wonder if we shouldn't read them off they want every month because a lot of these folks really go above and beyond um for what they do both businesses and individuals so I don't know anybody else has any thoughts on that well I think that Jen actually had asked this a while ago now but just it's coming to the table again do we thank the people who give donations in any way do we send them thank you cards do we reach out to them we do send okay hearing none all those in favor of approving the consent agenda signy by saying I I I I'll oppose motion carries we will move on to our reports which one of you is meeing us tonight um hello we have a bit of a longer report tonight but we will try to slide efficiently over at oelc families recently enjoyed a frosty fun family night which was a free event filled with activities including opst courses I spy sensory play story time and many other fun games the school is also preparing for their upcoming preschool information night which is scheduled for tomorrow evening helping to set the environment for kindergarten registration which will take place next Monday the 3D currently students at oakd are finishing up units on Native Americans and are beginning a new unit on Kings and Queens at Pine Meadow a positive connection has been established between the high school sustainability club and students working on the gift capat performance recently Pine Meadow partnered with mesum to host a family night ending with a good turnout and pine meow also launched a new active program called the Sor safety Squad which has already successfully reduced a number of playground injuries by 15% over at Riverview students rotated through PBIS stations during the first week back to school where they discussed what it means to be saber strong in all areas of the building they also hosted a first through fifth grade meth night partnering with Mathnasium where the turnout was phenomenal the had families come and play G math games together earning prizes while also learing Ma trip the RIS student council hosted a successful bake sale during maet and earned over $1,000 finally fourth graders were lucky enough to have Olympic gold medalist John Harrington visit last week and John shared his Incredible Journey as an athlete emphasizing the importance of teamwork playing for each other and always driving to be a good person book on and off the ice field Port Etc he also talked about the dedication and hard work work it took to reach the Olympics and how those values can apply to everything we do the students were so inspired by his words and to top it off John shared his gold medal with students and staff even autographing several times for the students to remember the special moment which made up an unforgettable experience and then we're just going to move right into the middle school who had their spelling be at the beginning of January big shout out to Dylan Eli and ingred who got first second and third respectively um eighth grade registration is happening down at the middle school um they actually I think it's 8th grade family night at the high school right now talking about registration for high school which is pretty exciting the high school music programs also visited the Middle School a couple weeks ago kind of building that relationship and continuing support for ensembles down there in at high school and then winter sports and activities continuing as usual of the Middle School lots of great performances and activities happening down there and then Friday January 31st from 6:00 to 7:30 is the first trivia and Game Night happening at the middle school which is quite exciting if anybody would like to attend over at the high school we wrapped up Winter Wonderland which was the week the week before winter break already um it was a you know fantastic event I think student council did a great job PR the usual and they had the most well attended winter formal in high school history according to the information we were given by Mr redon along with student council they are sending six students to the National Conference in Chicago which is like next week after two weeks Friday to Sunday this okay sounds good um and then winter sports activities are also happening at the high school one act got first place and moved or first place in last week in movie to sectionals um their one act is about Alex's Lemonade Stand which is a the charity for childood cancer and they've raised just around, doll I think from their performances which is incredible the end of the semester happened a couple weeks ago so that was an exciting and little bit of a stressful time but we're moving on to registration for next year which is always fun and I think that's about it you guys have any questions thank thank you we'll move on to our superintendent report well like usual Ben and I work together a little bit today along with Emily to make sure I cover too many of the things because they do such a great job so I'll always ACC like that um our district team is all continue to give you presentations on the referendum had opportunity to be out St and also doing weekly presentations here in commun the principles and our sea president and many of the teacher mentors and leaders did some training on Marzano teacher evaluation tool that happened last week and that was a good opportunity to look at ways that we can work feedback and coaching that we give to our teachers as we go into next year I had an a awesome time last week um in kindergarten classrooms reading with kids practicing routines attending gym class lining up with them doing all the things to make Elementary School fun so that was a good a good time in overage the Community Education and Facilities right now I did meet with Gen Traders and Bruce Thompson last week we are looking at unties to review our fees uh related to the usage of both the outdoor and indoor facilities on our campuses uh so we will be coming to the board for a report on that um probably during the march work session as Bennett and were talking about I did make it to frost the fun night for a little bit along with math night I will say the amazing lemonade Dr performance both principal kler and I um sh a the was an amazing performance by um theater department and I look forward to help competition last item for me is often times we'll get game reports when things have not gone well with our athletes or at activities and this morning I had forwarded to me a game report uh that during a boy swim and uh girls or excuse me swim and dive meet at Briner High School um our SEL athletes exemplified outstanding startel swimmers cheer for brain in swimmers competing alone in the JB 400 relay uh showing remarkable support and Mader game reports usually come to me when things have not gone well at a competition this is unusual and I think it really showsun um quick question maybe for you guys too do we know when the upcoming one act play competitions are they go to sections and then possibly state right correct so they have a regional competition this week is my Thursday I think they're in just Falls okay and then after that they would go down to St they can FL right thank you we can find out okay than any other questions we'll move on and invite Joe up for our district all right good evening not a lot to report on to this uh this month is last couple months we're a little more heavy on finance reports but this one be pretty light um I do have the uh budget actual or budget uh to date um report LinkedIn uh agenda for through December and through December we spent about 37% of the general fund uh compared to just 1239 last year and um this is the time of year really up where our budget is at for this year um in comparison to where we thought we'd be and then casting that forward using some uh projections for what we what we see as re revenue and enrollment and expenditures for next year so um really this is when we start working with Mike and the whole admin team on you know what our our section sizes look like what everything looks like across all our buildings so we'll start that work with the admin team this week really um in preparation for getting next year's budget ready uh we also have a finance and Personnel committee meeting scheduled for I believe it's February 14th that Friday um right early um to uh get you guys up to speed on where kind of we see the current budget and what we see as a forecast for next year what we're thinking we'll need as far as budget adjustments one way or the other of course a lot of that depends on the legislature which is starting to ramp up uh in St Paul um you know everything we're hearing now of course is just a a forecast and a projection so um don't anticipate knowing a lot before we have to set our budget in June this year so we're going to be going off mostly what we know is already in place for funding and not really assuming any additions unless something is um known but again very doubtful that we'll know much of that by May June by the time you be setting our budget so we'll keep you up to speed uh as we go along those happened but um it's kind of where we're at right now question very in depth thanks Joe we will move on to our school board committee report so anything from V District uh yeah we had our organizational meeting earlier this month uh I was reelected as the clerk of that board and I also am continuing on the facilities committee um at our February regular meeting we're going to do I believe afterwards we're going to do a work session with Doug Boer um from Adventure to talk about the facilities uh which is not going how we hoped because the market is just not there for what we wanted to do which was find a single facility that we could renovate and move everything into um so they're going to lay out some other options and see what we're looking at moving forward which um that meeting should be before our February regular meeting so I'll give an update at our next meeting on that you have no idea what those other options look like until that work session happens no right okay y we so Aaron our executive director just kind of gave us the teaser of you know Doug will come in with his team and lay out the options sure we don't know those details yet haven't had any career Tech communication and Technology Community Ed Community Ed um we just kind of reviewed the last catalog in some of the courses so um we talked about continuing in-house Vex for grades four through six in the fall October November December and then potentially adding robotics inhouse for third grade dependent on P Staffing teacher um and having enough staff available for that um talked about partnering for preschool wreck with stock Rapids um one big thing was having more in-person options for adult programming um the reason that there hasn't been is just due to the lack of teachers so if anybody wants to teach a course anybody um and has an interest or a passion in something reach out to us because there is a desire for more in-person adult classes um and then we had a lengthy discussion about how to handle requests that come to J for classes that may have controversial topics um they could be for adult but being that the school sponsors the catalog and the school handles the sign up for these courses we do have a district policy we just have to figure out how does our policy align with requests like that and making sure that we have consistency across the board um so that's a work in progress but we had a long discussion about that um and that was it that was basically the gist well and I guess I just add the we were we're looking at partnering with Summer programming for for preschool summer preschool yes and then um was it one of one of the people of the committee suggested that we have a tech conf tech confidence for seniors which I in potentially in partnership with um senior connection or or using them as a for that yes so yeah otherwise thank you for that update um finance and Personnel like Joe said that you guys have a meeting coming up right yeah um caser has not met school's advocating for fair funding you guys uh we have a meeting on February 7 okay okay and I I'm assuming no negotiations facilities policy or senior connection policy we're meeting February and then so yeah senior connection um I mentioned this last time their big membership dinner and social is this Wednesday 5:00 pm that's where Joe Schmidt is the headline speaker um RSVPs were due last week but you could maybe call an at the community center and see if it can get worked out that uh your number get at gets added they wanted RSVP RSVPs for the caterer so but yeah anybody who's interested don't don't hesitate to call the community center ask for an and hopefully you can get in on Wednesday should be a good event well attended and to the point of the tech um I guess I don't know what to call it but tech classes for seniors that has been discussed multiple times at the senior connection board table so there's there's definitely an appetite there okay was there anything I missed I don't believe um we do have have four of us that did go to the msba leadership conference and um for the sake of timing I think we're just going to wait for that update from all four of us at our work session coming up so yeah otherwise we can move on to our ele action items um Dr rard put in front of us Mino State High School league paper I don't know if everyone had a chance to kind of look that over do you have like I I can certainly just report out that the board had what I would say is an appetite to understand a little bit more about what the school board representative job description was and so this information is now available on the Minnesota State High School Le's website um I just thought I'd pull it down bring it to this board meeting to at least have some general discussion if there's any questions that you wanted me to seek out more information from the State High School league they're on August 1st fiscal year so every year around that time uh we should be designating someone we can do that at a board reorganization meeting which would probably make the most sense or you make a choice to or a decision to do it that time and this is separate and different from the there's another the region the region yes the region rep can I I can give you because I looked it up in the Constitution since then so I can give you a quick rundown of what's what there's actually three that I know of organizations um this is one of them this is the it's under if you're in the Constitution for mshsl it's under Section 208 designated School Representatives so that's what Dr Rivard is describing and what you referred to is the region committees which is under chapter 209 that's what I sit on where I'm just one of two School Board spots in the whole uh region 8A which is 20 some schools strong um and then from there there's only two Representatives picked from each of the region committees that form a part of the representative assembly that's under chapter 210 and those are the folks that actually have the power to make and change bylaws uh determine eligibility that sort of thing those are powers that the uh region committee I said on doesn't have the region committee is more just to administer the section tournaments um and give at times we're asked to give feedback on proposed rule changes that then the representative assembly which is above our pay grade will take into consideration so an example is at our last meeting um here in January it was asked whether in during 10 competitions can coaches Give In match advice because currently they're not allowed to do that they have to wait until the change over between uh sets so and how often are those meetings and how those are quarterly those are quarterly is for my you're talking about my region meetings yeah I don't know how often the representative assembly meets where are those are those virtual or no they're uh the ones that are during the school year are at a hotel in Alexandria and then the one in the summer is actually at s High School and and then now the meetings for this well I don't think there are there are no meetings there's no meetings for the rep the board representative but I had a conversation with some of the Minnesota State High School league um people that were there at the msba meeting and essentially the board representative is De on between the board and works with the superintendent and the ad so there's and the part that got really convoluted is there wasn't a vote for the school board representative but yet we you mean they don't get a vote we don't get a vote okay but I think it's because they're essentially saying since the three people are collaborating the superintendent is the one getting the vote based off of that collaboration when things come up when things come up and which isn't that frequent it's not that frequently no the one thing that I did know today as I was going through their agendas for their executive committe um you saw the information about the feedback that the regions had given to the about tennis so it does make it up there um to their 22 I think it's a 22 member executive committee but posting those minutes monthly I saw a posting of four months worth of minutes but I think we could we could do a better job District administration wise making sure the full board um has information about that at least annually we could be reporting out and having talk about those things as one opportunity for District administration make sure the board has the information we would entertain whatever the board wants Matt could you when you do go to those meetings could we add that as a committee meeting or or at least a report so that I mean it's quarterly but if there is anything of note that that's yeah brought back I gave you the update that's of note I mean the rest of it is really I mean but you've been going for years right right um yeah I've gone since July so I've been to three meetings now um a lot of it being that I'm one of the very few people there who aren't superintendent or an ad or a coach a lot of it's irrelevant to board members because so much of it is just budgeting for the section tournaments and making sure site locations are all worked out and everybody's got the right equipment at each site and all that kind of stuff so yeah the stuff that's relevant for me to give to the board I I can update on any rule changes that they suggest or anything like I did with tennis um yeah a lot of it is just very administrative so okay so yeah I will do that no problem so as far as this rep goes this round oh I will say one thing that was exciting that we got to do is choose the AAA winners from our region um so I don't know if that's been announced to the winners so I'll just say we elected one male and one female athlete from our section they no spoilers nobody from sartel made the Final Cut of three so it wasn't anybody from our school but um I was incredibly impressed by all the resumes we get to look at three resumés uh for girls and three boys and you could have flipped a coin on any of them it was it was really impressive what these kids were up to so that was fun that's something that we'll get to do just you know once a year but okay so for this rep being Jen went to the delegate assembly for msba and this topic of the Minnesota State High School league um rep and just the convoluted um information on who's doing doing what who's supposed to be doing what and then what information gets brought back to the board she's really been digging into that I think I don't know how long you spent at that workshop and uh at the convention a couple weeks ago but being you've been digging into that I guess I will nominate do I need to nominate you I'll nominate you for this board rep for the Minnesota State High School league I don't know you have to nominator but I don't know either being there's not a lot of it's very convoluted and there's not a lot of rules but I'm going for it does anyone have any objections I do we have the motion to do we didn't for our committee appointments so right I don't we just had to say that we were going to have it so is it I guess my question would be do we have to motion that we want to say that we have an associate High School league rep and then yep so we'd have a motion to say that we're going to establish a mate High School Board rep and then we can just say that after that so I need a motion to it is an action a motion to have AO so Chelsea is motioning to have a Min associate High School league rep Matt has seconded any discussion okay so my only well I would just want to clarify um if a vote comes up I mean this from what I understand this is intended to be kind of not just our board's view but it's also a combined vote with the superintendent and AD so that's correct um is there a process we need to put in place where we have a discussion for instance at one of our work sessions about something like that or is this because I don't know if if Jen is designated as our board representative for the voting process do we need to get a chance for everybody to get feedback these issues I'd be more than happy to update on anything yeah my goal is to make the meeting the 22 board their board um rent meeting next week Thursday I had a mine for that information so I think it's next week Thursday morning I think that would be a great idea and I think what the night the most current one was when they added ninth grade to the Minnesota State High School league um primarily so that they can make students are insured just in case of catastrophic injury we had at least three months of notice before we had to take that vote so I don't think it would be hard to include that in a word session if the board chose do so and to go over what was coming up and why that was um an issue that that they wanted to bring our voting power from across the state and then you know of course I talked with the athle yes as the 97% of the other districts across yes there was I was that the one that they were talking about like virtually nobody voted against it yeah has everyone assumed that nth grade yes yeah I got 500 plus yeses so any other discussion okay all those in favor of creating I'm an associate High School leag Bo rep signify by saying I those say n motion carries and we've all agreed that it will be done for this this year that leads to the next question Mike you said it comes up every fiscal year for them they yes they expect that we have elected or they ask that we have elected one at their fiscal year so every fiscal year why it has to be in August is because that's when okay so we need to make sure this gets on our August meetings from now on I'm going to report to them right now to add to the list would it be a good idea maybe to do it in July during one July that would probably make the most sense and I would like clarification from the msba too because they are the ones who suggest doing it at the org meeting it could just be again because this is very convoluted information so I don't know that everybody or anybody has a little great understanding of it but I would just like clarification from them on why they suggest the org meeting if it's really not something that applies until one applies now but technically isn't happening until August of every year with the boards okay I can dig into a little bit more about what other school boards are doing for when they're timing that um I know in the previous School District I was in in July we did do a Minnesota State High School leag report by the athletic director but I honestly don't recall if that was the same time that we also elected our board represent but I can yeah great and then from here on out you or merily will do the connecting because otherwise we don't get added to the okay any other discussion on Mr H okay then we can move on to our artificial intelligence in the schools with all right thank you very much I appreciate the time tonight to come and present uh tonight's topic is artificial intelligence so Ai and I want to give at the top we got four items to talk about this the history of it a quick introduction our ic74 plan will be spending the most time about and then a short demonstration at the end um so the history of generative AI I'm going to talk about that highlighted part we're talking about machine learning so the more we put into something the more we can pull out so generative AI type of artificial intelligence that can create new content such as images text audio and so much more that we're seeing um I'm going to highlight this here quick and say that I believe that this is one of the bigger movements we'll see in education how it affects education in the next 5 years so it's important that we're in front of it and ahead of it um history of it it's been here for a while so we've said Hey sir we've given it input it now knows oh yep you want directions home same with hey Alexa well difference in being if you go back ways Matt Quest I've had static information just printed out now I have real-time data so that's where the machine based learning comes in I know from the drivers ahead of me that there's a backup there's rot ruction there's a car accident that's the real time data that was put into the machine and now fed back to me in like an Apple Maps still um with today's world so we stream a lot of things the recommended for you gets pretty accurate so whether I'm on Spotify or I'm watching Netflix or Hulu the recommended is after I watched so many shows it knows what I like I like I like comedy and I like this actor it's always at the top of my recommended again machine based input it's coming back out AI has many different forms we're going to talk tonight on chat GPT um X has grock both Instagram and Facebook have the meta AI there's many uh China just had theirs today in the news so there's many that are coming many that are here um artificial intelligence again just exploding as it's relatively infant so why am I here tonight and why the big deal in education um chat GPT probably changed the education Spectrum in November of 2022 so we've had the history of the Netflix machine based learning we've had C we've had Apple Maps um chat GPT just a website on your computer you can go to it now any worth the connection um phones have it now integrated into what they have for apps nothing special that you need a software for so machine based learning I can give it data I can give it prompts um I can tell it what I want the best analogy I have is I have a virtual assistant right next to me um at the end we'll say can you plan a 3day vacation in Florida for me we'll see what chat GPT kicks out but the more prompts we give it the better accurate that it is so here's so if I'm a teacher now in education big deal um I ask chat GPT this question down below can you give me an open-ended question provide the information so I'm creating a test I say I want an open-ended question with that content in it within 10 seconds chat GPT spits this out yep here are three questions you can give your students based on the information that you just gave me this is one example in education there's Millions to give um we have a lot of examples that we'll talk about here in a little bit um in education like I said before there's many that coming out so chat GPT and Magic School are probably the top two that you'll currently hear of I say currently I'll be here next year and it'll be a slide much bigger than this um EDU . a and then the um risk teaching as well with that introduction at the top we're going to move into our isd748 plan so we know there's a spectrum those who have never used it those who have used AI intentionally on the bottom down there I'm going to talk tonight about our staff trains that we've done um a procedure document a guiding document for our staff and then what's next for our students for our secondary staff so grades 6 through 12 we use some early outs on October 3r 30 and November 27th we pulled in a professional speaker groovy education came recommended To Us by resource training and also um schools around us St Michael was a big advocate of of William he came to talk to our staff um walking through chat GPT walking through Magic School more than just give a history kind of gave how do I how do I prompt students if I don't want to use AI how do I prompt students if I want to go a much further in depth I think was received well the feedback I got by our staff one of the more powerful presentations I believe that I've seen in technology realm at least in quite some time one item to point out here is there's a year access to the portal that he has too so if you miss any training sessions there's four different sections staff can continue through it um we've had I think it was five staff sign up for the year credit through North Coast State University if they complete everything in that portal um we're also going to use this for our new staff on boarding next year as well and if that goes well we'll just keep extending that portal down the road after that was done we knew we needed a guiding document for our staff and this isn't a a policy or even um extent of a procedure but just a guiding document Miss State Department of Education had one um their recommendation was that you get a guiding principles for the and education in place um very vague but also to the point I would say that if we were to calculate where everybody is in the school district C Minnesota we weren't blazing the trail of being the front runner for AI but we're in that next 10% % of Staff or a district that is saying we need to take this serious we need to get this stuff in place we formulated a group uh committee that had Middle School staff High School staff and students and then the leadership from the middle school high school and the district service center we created the document which I can reference to later but I'm going to point out some highlights of it here was our goal the equal opportunities of being a big one we want to be transparent about about when AI can and should be used one of our biggest Hang-Ups in talking to our students in the committee is we didn't know when teachers we almost felt like we were cheating like can I use it can I not we weren't all on the same page quite yet um looking at students seen some head nods like yeah that's true it's only you're old but we need to be in front of this um and then the at the bottom of keeping privacy at the Forefront we wanted to make sure we concentrate on communication so again when can it be when should it be and then the last one bullet point on there we're going to talk about diagram the zero to Infinity here in a second this is where we landed um this is from uh Creative Commons license so we're free to use it but just that stoplight mentality so I know principal kler at the high school is laminating this for a staff the staff is aware of it so we want that communication to happen when should it be AI free when should be AI assisted and AI enhanced so even at that AI enhanced Mark we might use 80% of what chat GPT spit out the 20% needs to be our work or our factchecking or our insurance that what they spell is correct last one to highlight on here but not last one gu any document but last one on here is just that privacy we continue to strive here at our school district to keep students safe so we certainly comply with Copa and furpa which are up there there's a link in there that blue hyperlink for district approved databases and not every student is 121 databases but students are in a great deal of databases this is on our website so our terms of services for each one and then our privacy policy and that's how it becomes District approved through our websites um these tool names on the left hand side these companies have all taken the pledge that they will not share or sell your data with a third party that's how they get into our our website our current situation we've asked staff to um use one of these two for the end of the school year these are ones that we trained on chat GPT and magic school and then see if we want to pursue purchasing the paid version of them and it allows a few more features on each one if there's a paid version moving forward and then one more from our learning document just the students came up with this they're in the group of themselves um this is how they need to help us they want to communicate with their staff they want to make sure that citation is a big thing so did I use AI yes please put it on your work that you did um and then pledge to fact check make sure it's doesn't have bias in it um language and then protecting privacy as well we said January 20th so was our goal to get this up and running so that we could communicate with staff and say yep please go ahead and use it with students that that language is out there we've met our goal so starting here third quarter secondary students grade 6 through 12 we have that conversation with staff um principal cooler is trying to recommend his staff by next school year that we have this inter syllabus and we have some um language for them to use as well just a quick demo I know tonight's introduction night um if you haven't used it just a quick screen recording of what we have here for chat GPT so I'm just going to pause it I simply just went to chat gp.com and I prompted it with plan a three-day trip to Clearwater Beach Florida and again within seconds it gives me a plan of activities lunch what to do it sunset okay the the part we learned from our training is it's only as good as you are detailed and the second part the more prompts the better so again pretend my assistant sitting right here and I said oh I just thought of something I want to include yeah let's get to the next one okay I want to include so I didn't erase anything include a daily breakfast at awardwinning restaurants and also include daily water activities so it took what I had just revised it it didn't delete everything and now every everyone that I had there had a award-winning restaurant attached to it they had a paddle boarding at night jet skeme was on there so it's quickly adding to what I already told it and spitting it back out Endless Possibilities we learned about it from education sense how can it help in the areas of sped how can it help in the areas of electives how can it help in Daily work how can it help our students so we have a long ways to go um I'm excited to start with this it's also a little nervous at the same time but I think that we're on a good path and that we're ready for it so with that I didn't entertain any questions what is like the general ballpark for price on something like this yeah so I got magic schools priced back relatively quickly and I would say it's pretty comparable to what you would pay for like a Schoo that $10 to2 per student on an annual basis Y is there what's the is there a marketable difference between magic school and chat GPT so they both are the the same in an AI sense that I can put data in the nice part about I think if has to compare the two that magic school has those prompts already for you so I can click on the tile that says okay create a rubric I'm a teacher so create rubric makes sense to me like yep I'm going to make that as my start my template it has a lot of those tiles that are there so it's education Focus where I would say chat GPT I can do those same things but now I need to say create a rubric that includes three columns by two and here's my information and William helped a great deal you just introducing those to our sta yeah yeah I would says and yeah yeah the prompts and keep going on your prompts and then showing the difference I feel like we took a DAT on both of those to kind of articulate it and not that you need to settle that was his information you at least should see the difference in every AI program that's out there for education so when students aren't supposed to be using AI how how do uh teachers keep it and check make sure that they're not using AI yeah great question I think William pointed out too the detection tools for AI are not there I would say yet people advertise that we have detection tools we used to check for plagiarism so did I have an old older siing submit this paper or this report or whatever have you those work well for years and it'll give you a score yeah I believe 70% ACC the time that this was plagiarism in AI I can change it so many times that that's why the detection tools are not there as you saw my prompts from Florida I changed it twice I could change it a third time a fourth time a fifth time I could say write it in a third grade language write it how I used to write my last 10 emails once it gets personalized so it sounds like me wow so saying if I just use a paper sense it's not as easy as detection tools were now if I take that onto a science report test or take that onto a graph test it's getting harder and harder yet so great question I'm not sure we have a solve other than asking them to replicate their work um William did point out in the trending he says if you want something that's AI free here's some tips for you and he had a list of eight 12 that's still in the portal he said you know make it a local environment question that chat GPT you would know the answer to make it something that in the last week we've learned this in class I want you to go off of what we learned in the last week you know something that isn't in the machine sort of say yet that they can't pull out and do it but a tricky tricky topic I'm assuming that that's something that's in production though pretty heavily on getting better detection it it is yeah the one that we use right now is turn it in that's check for plagarism we've used as a district for 15 years um they promote that they have an AI tool um when they've been through it even Williams presentation was you know now their highest or getting is like the 49% like yes it's absolutely plagiarism well 51% chance that it's not so the refining I don't know I don't know where that answer ends because I'm not sure that that you can't just keep getting better at chat gbt as well but I'm excited to see what what that holds remind me who amongst the staff got the training in those two days yeah so as six grad 6 through 12 um our special education was doing training with letters so they did not with 6 through 12 currently but all other teachers then yes okay yeah what's the feedback then from the teachers in those grades I you know I yeah I was talking to Mike today I said I I feel like the resolve was just a positive I don't it's not going away was a message and received well so how do we get in front of it how do we not feel it scary but help our students when they leave this world that are using AI for many great things we have we had student on our team that was using AI in the summer and built his own tool so CH GPT med school built their own tool you guys know what I'm talking about yeah you proba explain it better I so he with people all over with from Hawaii to California and I forget what they're exactly studying and working on but it was amazing how much our students are already using it to do it and I think the staff are just appreciative that we are starting not talk about because we know that other school districts are we know that we have students who come to us from other school districts have already had they're starting this process of trying to learn the appropriate way the guidelines of when we're going to use it and when we're not going to use it so I think staff are just glad to we stting the conversation in a professional way thank you thanks than so then we have our Commissioner of Education review and comment is in our packet so this uh review and comment letter from commissioner Willie jet um is attached to the agenda this is really to meet a statutory obligation we uh the review and comment process for the projects that are on um the ballot to vote on in on February 11th but we had to go through there's a checklist actually in the second page of this letter um we had to go through and put together a lot of documentation describing the district describing the projects that we're proposing the costs Etc um you know what it's addressing what needs they're addressing those types of things the commissioner had 60 days to review that to receive any comments from the public about that or from others within mde um and then to issue a um statement essentially so the commissioner's statement uh was that basic in the Department's analysis and other pertinent information the commissioner provides a positive Rin comment basically uh go ahead to to put it on the ballot and proceed we had to publish that then in our local newspaper so this was published in the news leader in December and then the next requirement is to have it as a discussion item on school board meeting before the February election so um certainly entertain questions you'd have about um the review and comment process or the project in general um but really we're just uh this is checking a checking a box in the checklist of the process to get to to the election date there's no action needed thanks for your work on us thank you so then we are on to our second reading of board policies 522 606 66.1 and 620 is there any discussion I did have a question on um well first of all overall question if we can have like redlined versions of the policies attached just for individuals who aren't in the policy committee um but with 66.1 in comparing it to the msba model one there was a required um section by Minnesota statute last year on the prohibition on retaliation I did not see in this one I wasn't sure if it was covered elsewhere or if we needed to add it so I will bring that up so mspa um again we we are talking about world policy 6061 policy that we're bringing forward uh previous board had we had we had a 606 and then a 66.1 point2 3.4.5 the the plan from our policy committee would be to look at resending our previous1 2.3.4 now we would just have 66.1 related to library materials as we went through this Chelsea did get a hold of me and indicated in her comparison to mba's policy what she did find and I'll get to it is that Roman numeral 7 I just added after my conversation with Chelsea so this would be what would be brought back for the third reading um it's currently in mba's model policy and it would be this evening's look to see if the entire board would like us to add this section to our policy 66.1 well and I think that it was it is statutory it has to be in there was part of the new um laws that were passed in May of last year I believe but we just had I think we had three policies in front of us we had our old we had our um administrative suggestions and then we had the msba and we were trying to like meld them all together and I think we just missed this part of it but yes I it has to be in there because it's just legal compliance so I don't think that we can disagree with it anyways okay so that would be brought back for the third reading thank for for seeing that people on the board noted we did also add this point from your discussion during our first reading about the TI and from experience when if something's ever missed that's statutory statute controls over our district still if it's not in our policy we still are bound to the statute so abely um if that's happened elsewhere and we just haven't noticed it yet it's it's not the worst but it is always very nice to have it in our policy so everybody who reads the policies on notice of what the law says yeah it will generate questions otherwise I feel like at some point it would come up as a question as to why does not have it so thank you for catching that was there anything else okay uh before we adjourn I meant to and forgot um we do have a future board work session on Thursday February 6th with that in mind after talking to msba um they highly suggested that we continue our past practice of not voting during work sessions which is what we have done so just wanted to make sure everyone is aware that um we will not be board voting on our board chair position at work sessions that will remain at our regular board meetings on that note um and I was going to follow up with msba on this too but um as far as the liability parts of the chair you know who speaking to Legal um all of that it's a little bit of a gray area with an acting chair so dependent on what their answer is to I guess my questions on that we may need to look at potentially scheduling another meeting if it comes to something that there's not really a clear answer because there is some defined duties within statute that go to the an elected chair so how does that fall here and we may need to deal with that some of those are more urgent um but I at reach show to Terry moral and I'm just waiting for a response on that so but yes no voting and a work session yep okay so then our next meeting is February 6th here at 6:30 for work session and then our next board meeting is the 24th also here at 6:30 so then I'll just look for a motion to ad motion by Jen second by Emily any discussion hearing none all those signify by saying I I I all the PO say n motion carries and we are adjourned at 7:25
