##VIDEO ID:DP0piBX52pE## as well as our Educators and our teachers and um you would think that in the summertime um all of our leaders and our teachers are taking a break but we are participating in lots of professional development and I will share a little bit of that learning experience and that happens during the summer with you now so here are some of the opportunities that take place during the summer and these are just some of our offerings that we have available to our teachers um these sessions are geared towards and designed to be engaging and interactive and are directly uh related to our curricular initiatives that are prioritized um by the district one uh Dr aderhold mentioned um our administrative Retreat this is one of the highlights of our summer um our administrative Retreat is an opportunity for our administrators to come together um unlike the name it is not exactly a retreat but instead an opportunity for professional learning uh where we come alongside of one another and participate in different um sessions in which we are that are centered around a theme this year's theme from belonging to connection to mattering demonstrates the district's commitment to ensuring that all Educators here feel a sense that they matter better and that their work has a greater purpose and um that they really can contribute to that greater purpose throughout the week sessions varied from topics such as multi-tiered systems of support um Human Resources we had the opportunity to participate in Rucker disproportionality work uh crisis protocols uh dual immersion programming multilingual learner best practices and we even had um guest speakers an Holmes and rajn Gomer um come and talk to us about partnering with Southeast Asian families specifically around the topic of special education and these are just a few of the sessions that were offer throughout the week another huge part of our week is the opportunity to be able to build connections with one another as pictured here in some of the activities that took place probably one of the highlights and um opportunities to build connections because we do recognize that in order to feel that sense of belonging mattering we need to connect with one another um and we had the chance this year to attend the Trent and Thunder game with along with our families and thank you to uh Miss camela for taking all of these beautiful pictures there's actually a really great video and slideshow of all of our families in in one place and here are just a few of those snapshots it was a really beautiful evening and a chance to just get to know one another and our our kids and you know this this um sense of belonging really comes together when we can meet each other's you know families and really feel that connection another extraordinary professional learning experience that happens in our district is the 4day induction process or new teacher orientation uh yesterday we welcomed um 72 new Educators to wwp and this is always an a new and exciting opportunity for us as a district um thank you to our chief Equity officer Sue too and our supervisors of curriculum and instruction Mark Wise and Carl Cooper for putting together this really engaging and inspirational interactive experience and it's really focused in our district vision for student learning um sessions there are so many different amazing sessions but the sessions are geared towards our strategic goals the evaluation process building a strong Community um and classroom culture you know um relationships with students technology integration you name it and you can think think of it lesson planning um and really differentiated to meet the needs of all the different Educators throughout the um our district that we are welcoming our supervisor team is also really busy during the summer providing professional development for our staff um pictured here you can see our DLI professional development this year we will have 630 multilingual Learners in our DLI program spanning across five different schools we will have students at Maurice Hawk Dutch neck woff Village and um our first cohort entering Middle School at Community Middle School and um in this picture you can see 49 staff members participating in professional development and this was a 4-day experience in which um staff members had the opportunity to come together to learn best practices around um the teaching of multi-lingual Learners and now for our curricular projects here are a list of some of our new curricular projects that we had um happy to highlight just a few of them um our AP African American studies uh curricula that was written over the summer um as you know we were awarded as a district the AP africanamerican studies Grant um last year and we will um be offering in two sections one at each High School uh this upcoming year of AP africanamerican study so we're really excited to be able to add this as an addition to our program of studies as well as Dance 3 which is a continuation course um following dance one and dance two this is a really exciting and different type of a course and it integrates um dancing and also technology so students in this course will be able to um show core Elements of Dance also using video editing um tools and combining those two features together so it's combining dance with also technology so it's really um cool and different course for our students to be able to take and then our multi- lingual learner science and social studies uh both the the K2 and the 35 um those are to support um some changes in our K5 um elll support program and um we're really excited about that as well as our programming is Shifting slightly um to reflect a more best practice approach where our multilingual Learners our our elll students will be um provided with push and support um students that are proficient in the language for levels three and four and pull out support for students who are proficient um at levels one and two so the multilingual learner science and social studies are aligned to our standards and will support students that are in the pullout setting so this is another really great opportunity for our students um to receive a different level and different type of support pictured here you can see all of the different consistent parts of each of our curricular documents um on the right hand side um when teams of teachers are coming to together a couple of things happen in or in order for teachers to be selected and participate in the curricular writing um process one of those things is that every teacher who participated this year uh receive training in understanding by Design and also using Equity um Equity as a lens in order to write curricula as well as um we use a consistent template and we use the checklists just to make sure that all of the components are included in all of our curricular documents an additional component that all revised and new curricular documents have started to include our Equity statements and we're really proud of this work because including an equity statement in our curricular documents signals a commitment to foster a more inclusive and culturally responsive curriculum that encourag student engagement and also um diverse perspectives in our curricula and as you can see here are just two examples um of different Equity statements created by teams of teachers that participated in the writing of this these particular curricula so English language arts K5 and then emerging financial markets um and so moving forward all new and revised curricula will include an equity statement as well and this is something that we decided as a curriculum team was really important to us to include and it also shows our commitment to our Equity uh strategic goal the other component that we have agreed as a as a curriculum team to include our curricular story boards and this is a visual representation um in order to make our curricula more accessible to both students and to families it's a communication tool it's a way to represent the curricula in a different way and tell the story of what will be taught um and these are ways to communicate to families and also to our students you know here is here are the learning goals and here's kind of the story of how the curricula will go and as we move forward um with writing any new or revised curricula we will also be including storyboards and um sending those to parents and they're also available as part of any approved new and revised curriculum moving forward as well as a helpful tool as you will see in the next couple of slides we have been really busy updating and revising uh with a ton of revised curricular projects um in total we have um revised 143 documents um we had new English language arts standards that are expected to be implemented September of 2024 and therefore a large Focus this summer was around the new um English language arts standards so all of our English language arts K through 12 has been updated and revised to reflect that in addition we also revised and updated our mathematics courses to reflect the new standards although recently the state has uh granted us another year before implementation we have already revised our St our documents to reflect the new standards um so we spent a lot of time revising and making sure sure that our our curricular documents were in compliance with the new standards so here you can see all the different curricular projects that have been done and now Begins the work of the supervisors to prepare and to think about you know how will teachers have access to all of these new documents um how will they know you know um where all the resources are and so um teachers have access to new documents they're sent out by the supervisor team we also have lots of professional development days coming up both of our inservice days um in September are focused around departments and have opportunities for teachers to meet with uh supervisor teams as well as their uh teacher coaches to have access to all of the changes um we also have professional learning communities at the elementary level we have grade level meetings we have faculty meetings devoted to this so there's plenty of time to talk about implementation of the new curricular um projects that have come into place um and we have lots of conversations during our curriculum and instruction team meetings together as a supervisor team around implementation and what that looks like and how we can ensure that teachers have access to all of the new documents and to the resources that accompany those and here's more of them so I just wanted to say thank you um to the board for supporting all of these changes and all of the hours that it takes and the commitment but really to our supervisor administrative teams for leading the way um our teacher leaders uh we have so many teachers involved in curriculum writing over the summer they're here they devote hours and hours and hours to this work um even hours above the hours that they're paid to do the work they devote in order to make sure that everything is ready to go for our students um and all and you know I just we appreciate their hard work and want them to know that it's seen and that it's valued so thank you thank you Dr G um do we have any questions for Dr G from the board go ahead Dana didn't press the green button thank you for um this presentation um appreciate all the work that everyone does and um proud to be part of this uh district with all the things that we do um I just want had a question on the professional development page um or slide there are some things that um I don't know equity and what are the can you define what that ubd PPD sure is and then what the next one is and um I think that's it I think everything else I I I know I don't know if my my colleagues know but if you could just tell what those things are sure so the first one that you asked about the equity and ubd so those were the two training sessions that teachers who were writing curricula had to go through so the first one was um rating curricula through an equity lens so it took a look at assessment practices um how do we ensure that our resources are inclusive how do we ensure that representation um when we're thinking about um you know the text or the materials that we're using when we're writing curricula so every teacher who participated in writing curricula this year was trained in one session related to equity and then another SE session which was understanding by Design and that's a process um that talks about looking at um the big picture so you know what are our essential questions when we're developing a unit of study what are our objectives um what are the assessments so it takes them through all of the different essential components of curriculum writing um so what's the fnpa I think a do Sue do you remember oh find and Performing Arts yeah so that specific group did their own session yeah do you want to expand on anything the the supervisors had the opportunity to be trained with Mark Wise around the understanding and by Design or by myself around the equity work they came and participated in that professional development and then turn ke it to the members of their team that would be doing the writing because as Dr gold said the the best way to do this work is through the lens of the content so those content area supervisors really to take their teams through it so um Mr Santoro did his own session with find and Performing Arts for Equity yeah sure all right great question Dana and thanks for the clarification and Louisa hi yes thank you for all the work um for those of us who are not on the curriculum committee um when you talked about the modifications to meet the new El standards would you could you characterize those are those mostly changes in form or are there some significant conceptual changes in what we're teaching in the curriculum for English language arts yes sure um I would say that for 612 the changes are primarily in form for K5 there are more significant changes specifically at the K3 level um a lot of the K3 changes are around foundational literacy skills um so looking at incorporating more around phonics pheic awareness vocabulary uh building background knowledge um and so if you notice um our shift recently as a district towards um training our teachers in Orton Gillingham specifically we've started with kindergarten and we're moving towards first grade second grade it's to meet that need because uh that instructional methodology very much closely aligns with the standards and so the standards are are looking at um how do we build students foundational literacy skills and reading specifically a lot about reading just forers public thank you for the board members of the public that when when we're talking about the standards we're talking about standards that are adopted by the State Board of Education as recommended by the Department of Education that then informs curriculum writing across the entire state of New Jersey right so when we're writing curriculum aligned to standards these are Statewide learning standards um and all of K K12 language arts literacy was due this year and up until middle August all of K12 mathematics was required as well in the state board meeting in a August a change was made to postpone mathematics until all the way at the end of next year uh next summer however the work the work was already underway budgeted worked the the staff had done the work so we're adopting and implementing the also there are several new um bills that have recently been adopted related to um literacy specifically which require us as a district to assess our students in Reading um K through three to ensure that we don't have any students um that have any challenges in reading that we are identifying and screening our students and then we have a plan for intervention and support um so that we don't miss any students and we do we have a really strong uh plan and Universal screeners already in place prior to the bill even being adopted but we are probably going to expand on what we were already doing and add in a secondary screener just to make sure sure because we you know research has shown that the earlier you're able to intervene when students have any needs and reading the better the outcome for students and so we already have a universal screening process for K through 8 actually in Reading um but we will provide a secondary screener K through three for any of our students just to ensure that we don't miss any students and that we identify anyone that has um need and we intervene as quickly as possible right thank you Liz thank you for this uh presentation and you've definitely had a very busy summer yes um I you had mentioned that a speaker had talked about connections with like the South Community families with special needs can you expand upon that and if efforts are going to be taken with other groups as well sure that was actually a really positive um I think and very enlightening experience for us as a group um we had the opportunity just to hear you know some perspectives uh from two different speakers who have had lots of experiences working with families specifically around special education and um just giving us strategy as a district for you know um some of the maybe some of the ways in which to approach communication with families um especially when and to consider where some perspectives might be coming from um and that you know how to adjust our thinking as a school district when we're having those conversations around special education early identification um and we were able to ask some very open questions so that was really helpful um you know and I think as a district the more we learn the better we we can serve our students and you know both of the different Educators have been in practice for a very long time and have had a varied experiences and so they shared some of those experiences with us what H have been positive or successful strategies which strategies don't work so well um where some mindsets you know might be um you know where um parents it boils down to parents have their child's best interest at heart and if you can come from a place of you know we're in this together and how can we uh move forward together it's it's a better position to be in and so you know how can we do that and communicate that message so that was where that was sort of what the me the overall message was sure thank you uh sha um some of the training is in Orton Gillingham do all teachers get that training is it K through three and which students receive those that support is it through a screener or is it infused in the class so our goal will be that all teachers K through five will be trained um currently all of our kindergarten teach teachers are trained there are a few that will train in the fall but we have a plan for any classrooms whose teachers have yet to be trained um so all kindergarten students will receive it okay currently all of our special education students or special educators are trained as well um but our goal is for all K5 teachers to be trained so we are working towards that we also have a cohort of first grade teachers who are pilot teachers who agreed to be trained and we have another cohort on the fourth and fifth grade side who also are pilot teachers so we're kind of working at both ends and then trying to meet in the middle and then that's available to any student that to all students we want K through five every general education student and then special ed does theirs a little bit differently um if students are receiving intervention then they and they that's a need for them than they are receiving Orton Gillingham because all of our interventionists are trained thank you sure go ahead L thank you Dr gold I just had a question um for I understand they you know we're building up so more teachers get trained in um or in Gillingham um I was thinking just specifically because of the fourth and fifth graders currently because those are sort of like the covid kid from I have one of them so um from kindergarten to um so mine was as a rising fifth but he was a kindergarten when Co hit um I guess I'm thinking like you know you're building up to fourth and fifth but like right now say a student who you know maybe struggling or may need services or I guess what opportunities are there for that specific specific excuse me cohort because they were kind of hit hard with the you know like early intervention with the when it comes to reading great question so um we we have our Universal screeners in place so let's say a student gets identified based on one of those universal screen ERS that um intervention is necessary then they would have the opportunity to work with one of our interventionists at that level um and all of our interventionists are trained with Orton and they have access to all the resources and they would be in a small group likely in a pullout setting multiple times a week receiving that intervention as long as needed to make progress so we utilize map as our as our Universal screener and then we use a secondary screener um and um we have a different secondary screeners depending on the grade level and it depending on what gets flagged right so if something related to phonics gets flagged we might use one screener if something related to comprehension gets flagged we might use a different secondary screener because that'll tell tell us what type of intervention the student needs but if they need intervention we we have a way to determine it and then they will get whatever intervention is necessary with um one of our interventionists in a small group thank you great questions any other questions all right uh Dr aderhold I just want to follow the board's questions with just a thank you to Dr G for the incredible work that she and her team have done um 143 curriculums and uh a tremendous number of professional developments throughout the summer is no easy feat um so there's just you know normally we don't acknowledge individual administrators in this time but I do think that um circumstances presented themselves this Summer that it's worth mentioning um two really three in particular that went above and beyond um with the transition of Lindsay jablonsky who was our K5 language arts supervisor um went off to become a principle um we were without a supervisor for k5la during the summer and if you start thinking about and looking at the curriculum documents impacted in that area you're talking about your writing curriculums you're talking about your reading curriculums you're talking your pheic awareness um phonics and handwriting you're talking about um your word study um in particular our math supervisor K5 Melissa Pearson as well as our principal over at morrice Hawk Sarah brigh um and our new supervisor that didn't start at that time Kim Haynes jumping in virtually um on while she was working over the summer uh previously you know um previously arranged before she started with us um really Melissa and SAR in particular just did Yan's work um carrying that work forward and I think we just should recognize them publicly because in addition to that Melissa also carried the math K5 um rewrites as well so just a real credit to her and um getting the work done this summer so thank you to Melissa and to Sarah and of course to Barbara and all the work that the curriculum team did so thank you amazing thank you um that takes us to our first opportunity for public comments the board invites thoughts and reactions on agenda items and items of concern from members of our community who are present each participant is asked to give his or her name and address prior to making a statement which will be limited to 3 minutes in accordance with board policy 0167 all statements shall be directed to the bra W in officer this public comment period shall be limited to 60 Minutes um any public comment seeing none um I will close this uh public comment period and uh move on to the committee report so I'd like to ask Dana uh as chair of the administration facilities committee to provide a report okay thank you um the administration and Facilities committee met on August 13th we reviewed two policies for first be responsible for engineering fees however if the project proceeds to completion these fees will be included in the long-term financing with the payments covered by savings and utility costs green Sky submitted the RFP for a power purchase agreement that offers the greatest savings to the district The Proposal locks the rate at 5.95 cents per kilowatt with no inflator for 15 years the two utility providers to the district allowed consideration of several larger solar arrays however jcpnl will not permit new arrays to be constructed at Village and Grover and psng will not allow a new
